Dear St.MM's Family,

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

“I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church,

to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-

examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and

self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s

holy word.” (BCP pg. 265—Ash Wednesday

Service).

Nature abhors a vacuum. Have you ever tried to get rid of a bad habit, or sin

pattern? Why does it seem so easy to start a bad habit, yet so difficult to stop

it? We can, of course, blame our fallen nature and the curse of sin. But Jesus

overcame the curse; he defeated sin and death. We have victory in Jesus

Christ. He gives us grace to overcome sin and the curse. After all, He is a

savior!

When we try to change, we tend to focus on the problem and not the

solution. When we focus on the sin or bad habit, it becomes our focus.

Nature abhors a vacuum—if you get rid of a bad habit, but do not replace it

with a good habit or virtue, the old habit or sin pattern will return. So, we

should change our focus to the solution—God! The best way to focus on the

solution is to PRAY, to talk to God.

I often have parishioners share with me that they wished they prayed more

or prayed more effectively. They wish to grow in faith and grow in their

relationship with God. They want to focus on the solution, not the problem.

The desire to pray or pray more is from God. It means He is talking to you.

Do you want to learn how to further the communication? Then join us this

Lent as we focus on prayer using the 40 Days of Prayer Campaign.

The 40 Days of Prayer program will include Sunday sermons by Fr. Jim+,

and our Life Groups will be watching a weekly video presentation, followed

by discussion. The video series features Pastor Rick Warren and has a

workbook to go with it. The workbook has a daily prayer journal to help you

develop your prayer life.

(Continued on page 2)

Page 2 Rector’s Letter

Want to learn how to pray with more confidence and faith than ever before? Want to see more unity

in the church? Do you need freedom and breakthrough from a sin-pattern or bad habit? Are you, or

is someone you know, struggling with a difficult situation or circumstance? Do you or they need a

breakthrough in their life? A breakthrough in their marriage, health, finances, job, or an important

relationship? Breakthroughs always begin with prayer!

Throughout this campaign, you will:

1. Learn to pray for breakthroughs.

2. Develop a daily habit of prayer.

3. See unity increase in your church, home,

workplace…

4. Experience God’s blessings.

5. Grow in faith.

The real work of this program takes place in our Life Groups. They afford the opportunity to focus

on the subject with your brothers and sisters in Christ. They provide a place for worship, fellowship,

discipleship, evangelism, and service. If you look at Jesus’ ministry, he had large group meetings

(with the crowds), and small group meetings (with his followers). Guess which meetings had the

greatest impact on the individuals? We too have our large group meetings (Sunday Services), and

now we have our small group meetings (Life Groups).

If you wish to participate, if you really want to see change in your life, you will need to sign up with

one of the Life Groups. The Life Group Leaders will be taking orders for the book that corresponds

to the videos. You can also start a Life Group—contact me and I will help you set it up.

Think of all those Lents that have come and gone without any real significant impact on your life.

This Lent that changes. Join us as we engage in a season of 40 Days of Prayer.

In Christ,

Fr. Jim+

Campaign includes:

Weekly sermon on Sunday by Fr. Jim+ 40 Days of Prayer Small Group DVD: Includes 6 different 25- to 35-minute video messages for

small group study (Life Groups), Sunday school, or adult education class. It also includes the BONUS lesson, "Why Doesn’t God Always Answer the First Time I Pray?"

40 Days of Prayer Workbook: This all-in-one workbook is the hub of engagement for participants during the campaign! The workbook contains the study guide for each small group lesson, daily prayer prompts throughout the campaign, space for weekly sermon notes, and suggestions for further study.

Optional Resource book ($9.99) Experience God's Power Through Prayer: This follow-up experience to the 40 Days of Prayer campaign serves as an effective tool for participants to continue to grow in the lessons taught throughout the campaign. 40 Days of Prayer

ITINERARY: Oct 22, 2018 - Departure from the USA

Oct 23 - Arrive Israel. We arrive at Ben Gurion Airport, where we will be met by our Israeli guide, who will accompany us during our entire stay in Israel. We immediately transport to Joppa for a walk through the old town before traveling northward to our hotel in Galilee. Our guide will conduct our day’s devotional. We will offer prayers of thanks for safety and the special blessings ahead, as well as prayers for the people of this land. Jaffa was the port city used by King Solomon to import Cedar trees from Lebanon when he built the first Temple in Jerusalem, (II Chronicles 2:15). From here, Jonah would have boarded the ship for his Journey, which ended in a whale’s belly. We will walk around the narrow lanes and visit the house of Simon the Tanner, where St. Peter had his vision. Later we will drive northward to Galilee. Dinner and overnight in Galilee.

Oct 24 - This morning we continue along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea to Caesarea, where Gentiles first heard the Good News from Peter and were baptized. We’ll see a Roman Amphitheatre and aqueduct, and continue through the Jezreel Valley to Megiddo, where archaeologists have unearthed 20 levels of civilization. Megiddo is also known as Biblical Armageddon. We’ll journey on to Mt. Carmel, where Elijah hid from King Ahab and fought the 400 false Baal Prophets. We will stop at the beautiful Druze Villages and have time to check the local market. From here, we will go to Stella Maris, the Carmelite Monastery housing the Prophet Elijah’s cave. Final activity is a visit to the view point overlooking the amazing Bahai Gardens. Dinner and overnight in Galilee.

Oct 25 - Start the day with a visit to Cana, site of the first miracle where our Lord converted water to wine. Continue to Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus, where we visit Nazareth’s Great Basilica of the Annunciation. We will visit Joseph’s work shop and Mary’s well. Also, in Nazareth, we will see the Synagogue Church and the amazing view from Mt. Precipice. Next is a visit to Zippori, (Sepphoris), the home of Mary’s family, where we will see the most fascinating ancient Mosaic floors and meet the Mona Lisa of the Galilee!! We conclude our day with a visit to the Jordan River Baptismal site. Return to our Galilee hotel for dinner and overnight.

Oct 26 - Capernaum, Dan, Caesarea Philippi & Mount of Beatitudes. Following breakfast, we will begin the day with a visit to Magdala, Mary’s home town, to see the new excavations of a Synagogue from Jesus’ era. Next, we will travel to Tel Dan, where we will see the ancient Altar Caesarea Philippi, site of Peter’s Confession. In Capernaum, we will visit the ruins of an ancient synagogue and Peter’s home. Then we travel to the site of the multiplication of loaves and fishes and the Mount of the Beatitudes, overlooking the Sea, where our guide will reenact Jesus’ famous "Sermon on the Mount." A relaxing cruise on the Sea of Galilee with easy viewing of the nearby Golan Heights brings to life the experiences of the fishermen disciples and a conclusion to a wonderful day. Dinner and overnight at the Galilee hotel.

Oct 27 - Beth Shean – Jordan Valley – Dead Sea. We begin the day with a visit to Beit-Shean/Scythopolis, the most magnificent archeological site in Israel, located at the strategic juncture of the Jezreel and Jordan valleys. Like Jericho, it has been almost continuously occupied throughout history. After defeating Saul and his sons on Mt. Gilboa, the Philistines hung their bodies on the walls of Beit-Shean. (1 Sam 31:10-12) Archaeologists have uncovered a huge number of ruins of the Roman/Byzantine Scythopolis. From here we travel along Mt Gilboa to the Gideon Spring. In this biblical site, Gideon chose his best worriers to go and fight the Midianites. As we travel south, we will arrive at Jericho, here we will see the Sycamore Tree, Elisha’s spring, and view Mount Temptation, where Jesus was tried by the Devil for 40 days

Page 4

and nights. Then we travel to visit Qumran Caves, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. We will then go to our Spa hotel, located on the shores of the Dead Sea. Dinner and overnight.

Oct 28 - Our day begins with a cable car ride to the mountain top fortress of Masada. Here our guide will treat us to the history of the famous zealot stand. Afterwards, we will visit Ein Gedi, "Spring of the Goat," an oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea. Because of its warm climate and abundant supply of water, the site developed a reputation for its fragrant plants and date palm groves. This is where David hid from Saul, and where God defeated the enemies of the Israelites by praise and worship led by King Jehoshaphat. (1 Sam 23:29; 24 Song of Songs 1:14). The remainder of the afternoon will be free to relax, float on the Dead Sea waters, or enjoy the thermal indoor pools of our hotel’s spa. Dinner and overnight Dead Sea Hotel.

Oct 29 - This morning we will leave the Dead Sea and drive towards Jerusalem. On the way, we will stop at the Wadi Kelt View point for the amazing view of the St. George Monastery, which was built over the cliffs about 1500 years ago. We will drive by the Inn of the Good Samaritan and arrive at the Mount of Olives view point. From here we will see the entire Old City, Mount Moriah, and the Temple Mount. From the site of the Ascension of Jesus, we will walk downhill along the Palm Sunday road and reach the Garden of Gethsemane. Many have wished to be whisked back in time to get a glimpse of our Lord here, or hear His voice, if only for a moment. While here, walk between the ancient olive trees, read the scriptures of Jesus' prayer and take time for personal reflection. Next, we arrive at Mount Zion and visit the house of Caiaphas, where Jesus was in custody. Then we go to the "Upper Room" where “the disciple whom Jesus loved” laid his head on His breast and later, where Thomas cried; "my Lord & my God." Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Oct 30 - Archaeological project, Bible Times, Garden Tomb. During the morning we take part in an Archaeological project called “Sifting the Temple Mount”. Then, we will enter the Old City through Stephen's Gate and visit the Pool of Bethesda where Jesus cured a cripple. We move on to the Judgment Hall of Pilate, hear of those who conspired against Him, and are reminded of His brutal beating and humiliation. While walking along the Via Dolorosa, we are reminded of His way of suffering and view the Church of the Sepulcher before we arrive at the climax of our tour - the Garden Tomb. Your faith, that blessed hope and communion with Christ, will take on a tremendous new meaning today. Dinner and overnight Jerusalem.

Oct 31 - New City tour. An interesting and educational day of touring awaits us today. In the beginning, we will visit the Children's Exhibit of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. Later, we will visit the scale model of the ancient city of Jerusalem. Our guide will walk us through an accurately detailed smaller version of Biblical times in Jerusalem, as well as the architecture and décor of the Temple. Next, we visit the Shrine of the Book, housing the authentic Dead Sea scrolls. Our next stop will be at the Knesset (Parliament building) to see the Giant Menorah standing across from the impressive building. From here. we will enter the Jewish Quarter in the Old city to the see the ancient Roman Cardo, the Broad Wall, and the Western Wall - the only remnant of the Temple that can be visited nowadays. Later, we will arrive at the Davidson center and the Southern Wall Excavations. This southern side of the Temple was the main entrance for the common folk, whereas the Priests and Levites had their own entrance from the higher, eastern side. Parts of the giant stairs, which led to the Temple Mount from the courtyard, have been unearthed. It is in this courtyard that Jesus likely drove out the vendors and money exchangers who were exploiting the people. It is also likely that this is where Peter stood and preached, and where thousands were saved and baptized. Dinner and overnight Jerusalem.

Nov 1 - Bethlehem, Ein Karem . This morning we will drive over to Bethlehem, where we will visit the site of the Nativity of our Lord. Later, we will reach the area called “the Shepherds Fields”. This where the Shepherds saw the Bethlehem star. From here, we go to the village of Ein Karem, the birth place of John the Baptist, where we will visit the fountain and St. John’s Church. Next is an exciting visit to one of the most beautiful markets in Jerusalem called Machne Yehuda. You will have time to do some last-minute shopping before returning home on the following day. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Nov 2 - Departure transfer to the airport. Our flight homeward brings us home this morning with wonderful memories from the trip of a lifetime and with a greater understanding of the Word of God.

Personal Financial Stewardship

Budgeting for God and the Future

“On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income” (1 Corinthians 16:2).

A budget is a spending plan in which you determine, in advance, how much of your income to allocate to each spending category. The purpose of a budget is to plan your monthly expenditures so that you can make sure you have enough to pay the essential bills, save for the future, etc. The amount of income you allocate to spending categories will be defined by your values and interests.

In developing your budget as a Christian, one of your first tasks will be to examine the priorities that God has directly revealed in his Word. There are four general budget categories that are clearly mandated: giving, saving, living expenses, and debt repayment.

Giving: God’s Word directs us to give him our first and best. In Proverbs 3:9 we read, “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops.” The Apostle Paul wrote, “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income” (1 Corinthians 16:2). Giving demonstrates our gratitude for all of the gifts that God has bestowed upon us.

Saving: In order to prepare for emergencies and to have resources so you can achieve your financial goals, saving is essential. In Proverbs 21:20 God shares this wisdom regarding saving: “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.”

Living expenses: What you allocate for your living expenses should be established with the money that is left after giving and saving. If you have not previously developed a budget, you could be struggling to maintain a reasonable allocation for your lifestyle that you can afford. An important first step is to distinguish between what you need versus what you want. Jesus said, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15).

Debt repayment: In Scripture, God warns us to be cautious about debt. God’s Word discourages borrowing: “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7).

The Bible is clear as to your responsibility to repay money that you borrow.

In order to avoid dependence on others and to set a good example, you should develop a budget. If you wisely include the four essential categories, you will gain control of your money!

Page 11 Devotional Meditation

Scripture Readings:

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35

“Just as the son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

Thoughts…

The basis for cheerful giving comes from the love that we receive from God. “For God so loved the world that he gave . . .” (John 3:16). God loved and continues to love. His nature is both loving and giving. Because of his love for us, he promises to supply all of our needs. Paul said, “He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).

With the love and grace that we receive from our heavenly Father, we are changed from self-centered to God-centered people. With God in control of our lives, we can begin to trust and depend on him. Filled with God’s love, we will love and give cheerfully. Christ’s nature will be seen in our giving to others.

Jesus provided the model of giving one’s self to others. He “. . . did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Christ willingly and cheerfully accepted this humble position to give and serve others. Jesus said, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:14-15).

As his stewards, we are called to give cheerfully to the needs of others. In giving to the needy, we are reminded of the words in Matthew 25:40, “. . . I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these bothers of mine, you did for me.”

Discussion Thoughts:

1. What allowed the Macedonians in 2 Corinthians 8:1-5 to give so generously and cheerfully?

2. Explain the attitude of trust in relation to cheerful giving.

3. What may you have to forego when you give generously and cheerfully?

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, we pray for a giving spirit. Lord,

enable us to give our time, talents, and treasures cheerfully. Amen. www.parishpublishing.org
