Academic detailing is a form of continuing medical education in which a health professional, usually a pharmacist, meets with physicians one-on-one to discuss drug therapy topics. The BC Provincial Academic Detailing (PAD) service provides objective, balanced, evidence- informed information on the best prescribing practices. Each session generally lasts 15-30 minutes, and the pharmacist visits two to three times per year, discussing a different topic at each visit. Osteoporosis: Focus on Bisphosphonates During the academic detailing session, you will have an opportunity to discuss: 1. Fracture risk assessment tools: FRAX vs. CAROC, advantages and limitations. 2. The evidence for benefits and risks associated with the various bisphosphonates. 3. The optimal duration of bisphosphonate therapy. 4. The role of bisphosphonates in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, men, and the very elderly. 5. How to optimize bisphosphonate therapy.
