    Since the Cuban Revolution of 1959, Fidel Castro hadgrown increasingly antagonistic towards the United Statesand their interests. On the other hand, the CIA was authorised by the

    Eisenhower and Kennedy to come up with ways to removethe Cuban prime minister with attempts such as poisoninghim. The CIA had anticommunism groups inside Cuba whoactively supported them, and a radio station beamedslanted news at the island from Florida. The CIA even contacted the mafia about workingtogether to assassinate Castro. However, nothing worked

    Meanwhile, thousands of Cubans were fleeing theisland, legally at first, then clandestinely. TheseCubans were mostly upper and middle class who hadlost properties and investments when the communistgovernment took over.Most of the exiles settled in Miami, where they seethed with hatred for Castro and his regime.

    It didnt take the CIA long to decide to make use of these Cubans and give them the chance to overthrowCastro.

He was an administrator of the Marshall Plan inGermany and eventually became head of the Economic Cooperation Administration. He worked closely with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) which had helped to organize guerrilla fighting, sabotage and espionage duringthe war. Joseph Scheider (Sidney Gottlieb)-Born in 1918. He worked as a member of the

    Technical Services Staff (TSS) and eventually became head of the ChemicalDivision.

    Events that took place: When word spread in the Cuban exile community of an attempt to re-take the island, hundreds volunteered. Many of the volunteers are formerprofessional soldiers under Batista. The force was laterknown as the Brigade 2506.On Apr. 17, 1961, the group of Cuban exiles invadesCuba at the Baha de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) on the

    south coast of Cuba in an attempt to trigger an anti-Castro rebellion in Cuba and overthrow theCommunist regime of Fidel Castro.

    However, they were easily defeated by the Cuban army,and by April 20, most were either killed or captured.The poorly planned invasion subjected PresidentKennedy to severe criticism at home.Cuban exile leader Jos Mir Cardona, president of theU.S.-based National Revolutionary Council, blamedthe failure of the Bay of Pigs due to the inability of theUS and exile forces to eliminate Cuba's air force, butperhaps more crucial was the fact that the uprising,the exiles hoped and needed to spark, did nothappened.
