School Opal Card News Applications for 2018 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) and Term Bus Pass (TBP) travel entitlements are now open.

In coming days students who hold an SSTS entitlement and are changing grade bands i.e. going from year 2 to 3 or year 6 to 7 and changing school, and students whose entitlement was approved under a medical condition, will receive notification by email or post informing them of the pending expiry of their entitlement. TBP holders will also receive notification.

Students enquiring about pending cancellation should be advised to go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails to update details/make application for next year’s entitlement.

Application needs to be made before 31 December 2017 to ensure their entitlement is updated and their current card is not cancelled. If application is made after the expiry of their entitlement (31 December) the system will automatically cancel their card and a new one will need to be issued.

Please note: Students who are changing grade band and are remaining at the same school will not receive notification and do not need to reapply (the system now automatically validates a student’s on-going eligibility if at the same school and going from infants to primary or primary to secondary). Where a student meets the new eligibility the system will automatically update their entitlement and card.

Students in the Opal area applying for a SSTS or TBP entitlement for the first time will receive their card (posted to the nominated address) a week or two before the commencement of 2018 classes. Please let students know new cards for 2018 are not posted in 2017 or during the Christmas / New Year period.

Congratulations to Jiana Saada (4M) who achieved an A for her grade 2 AMEB exam for flute. Well done!

This week students have been learning about Alexander Fleming and the invention of penicillin. Year 2 now understand how penicillin was discovered and why it was such an important discovery for the soldiers in World War II and for us today.

Year 6 History Project

This week, students from Year 6 submitted their history projects. Students were required to choose an historical topic based on a significant event, person or site. Some examples of the topics covered were World Wars 1 & 2, Stonehenge, The Battle of Troy, The Great Fire of London, Easter Island, The Selma to Montgomery March, The French Revolution and The Bodyline Bowling Controversy, to name a few. The creative elements included dioramas, sculptures, websites, board games and movies. The standard of projects across the grade was incredible and students should be very proud of their achievements.

This term Grade 3 began a unit of work on developing our descriptive writing skills. This includes study related to learning how to decode the way visual information is constructed and used to convey information. Many quality texts will be used in this unit of study – such as Anh Do’s The Little Refugee and Jeanie Baker’s Where the Forest Meets the Sea.

We have all been busy preparing our class art projects for the School’s art auction. Class 3C are creating a playful set of animals to be mounted in a grid. We have had to practice our drawing skills, paint very neatly and use new materials to assist us - such as masking fluid. The finished work will be sent to the framers this Friday the 20th. We are sure the bidding will be fierce!

Please be sure to read these instructions (if we do not have the required information, we cannot refund or exchange your item/s). All returned items must be unworn, in saleable condition and with tags still attached.

EXCITING NEWS – No more lost Jumpers, thanks to RagTagdAs of Term 4, all new jumpers purchased are fitted with a ‘RagTag’. No – we cannot track your child… but here is how it works.

1. When you receive your new jumper there will be an orange tag sewn into it, with a unique code and a number to send an SMS to

2. SMS to the number to activate your tag/pair it to your phone

3. If your child loses his or her jumper, and the jumper finds its way back to the lost property stand in Building B (which most jumpers do), the stand will SMS you to let you know the jumper is there

Already have jumpers you wish to tag? Easy done! Simply log onto Flexi Schools and you will see the tags available for just $5 each. Simply sew the tag into your child’s jumper, activate as above and you are all set. Simple as that!

We are in the home stretch of the year, and things are getting busy. The canteen is a handy option to provide healthy, fresh lunch for your children. Fridays are always popular, so we ask you not to be afraid if you haven't volunteered, but to jump in and lend a hand while having some fun doing it. It's a satisfying reward watching the happy faces of the kids when they grab a cold treat on these warm spring days. Term 4 RosterWeek 3 (Oct 23rd- Oct 27th) 1G
