The Bay School of San Francisco school profile 2016-2017
CAMPUS AND FACILITIES
Founded in 2004, The Bay School of San Francisco is an independent, coeducational college preparatory high school in the Presidio, the nation’s largest urban national park. More than 350 students in grades 9 through 12 attend classes in our beautifully renovated, national historic landmark building. The 62,000-square-foot campus at 35 Keyes Avenue features 30 classrooms, three state-of-the-art science laboratories, a 3,000-square-foot library, an art studio, a media lab and a spacious student commons and dining room.
Our Bengier Project Center, established in 2011, boasts dedicated facilities for engineering, design and robotics, as well as additional fine arts studio space for sculpture and printmaking. The Bengier Project Center also serves as the home of Bay’s distinctive Senior Signature Projects program.
OUR MISSION
At Bay, we balance challenging academics and innovative thinking with a mindful approach to learning and life. Our goal is to see students unlock their individual and collective potential so they begin to realize their roles in a dynamic world.
STUDENT BODY
At Bay we believe that a broad range of perspectives and experiences play a crucial role in achieving our educational mission, thus we intentionally recruit students and teachers from diverse cultural, racial, economic and geographic backgrounds. Students of color represent approximately 30 percent of the student body. Bay students come from more than 90 middle schools—77 percent from independent schools, 20 percent from public schools and 3 percent from parochial schools.
ADMISSION
The Bay School seeks enthusiastic students with varied backgrounds, interests and talents who are committed to a challenging college preparatory program. Bay students are intellectually curious, motivated and global thinkers who contribute to a kind, welcoming community.
TUITION ASSISTANCE
To offer the opportunity of a Bay education to motivated and qualified students regardless of their economic circumstances, the school provides tuition assistance to 30 percent of the student body.
CURRICULUM
Emphasizing depth of content, The Bay School curriculum heralds problem solving, promotes critical thinking and encourages students to connect academic study with their extracurricular lives. Our 9th- and 10th-grade courses build a broad foundation of basic skills, focusing on the relationships among traditional academic disciplines. Students’ interests and talents increasingly drive the academic program in 11th and 12th grade.

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS
• The academic year consists of three trimesters, each 12 weeks long. Students take four courses each term. Each class meets four times per week for 80 minutes per meeting. A two-trimester class at Bay contains more instruction time than that offered in a year-long course in most semester-based curricula.
• Computing technology is an integral part of the academic experience at Bay. As part of our one-to-one laptop program, Bay issues a laptop to every student and teacher, supported by a wireless campus network. Teachers utilize technology as a tool to enhance classroom instruction.
• The 9th- and 10th-grade Humanities sequence examines global issues and cultural concerns through the lenses of history, literature, social science, religion and ethics.
• In 11th and 12th grades, students choose from more than 70 elective courses such as Biological Psychology, Climate Change, Electronic Music Studio, Ethics, Myth in Ancient Greece and Rome, and Video Production.
• The Bay School offers courses in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese language programs through Level 5, as well as Advanced Topics in Mandarin for more experienced students.
• 12th graders in the Senior Signature Project program pursue an area of academic or personal interest in depth. This course is a requirement for graduation and entails a minimum of 65 hours of field work for which students earn full academic credit. This course emphasizes depth of study and mastery in a field of the student’s choice. For this course, students act as their own project managers while collaborating with mentors who are experts in their field.
ETHICS, SPIRITUALITY AND MINDFULNESS AT BAY
A focus on ethics and mindfulness permeates life at Bay. Daily, at Morning Meeting, the Bay community gathers to share diverse experiences and perspectives. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that meditation helps reduce stress, improve focus and increase our sense of compassion, thus Morning Meeting at Bay includes a few minutes of silence during which students and teachers center themselves and notice their own emotional and physical states.
ATHLETICS
The Bay School offers a large, varied and competitive athletics program. As members of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), Bay Counties League and Central Division (BCL-Central), 23 different Bay girls, boys and coed teams compete in 10 different sports against independent, parochial and public high schools throughout the Bay Area. Bay’s physical activities program offers group exercise (e.g. cycling, Pilates), high-performance crossfit training, martial arts, strength training and rock climbing after school three times a week.
Recognizing the importance of physical activity to overall well-being, Bay requires students to take part in a sport or activity, either at Bay or outside of school, in the fall and spring trimesters.
