Paying Attention• Readtochildrenandaskquestionssotheylearntolisten.
• Playgamesandsingsongstohelpchildrenlearntofollowdirections(Putyourhandonyourhead,touchyournose,steponthepaper,etc.).
Getting Ready to Read• Readtochildreneveryday.
• Showchildrenhowtousetheirfingerstofollowwordsacrossapagefromlefttorightandtoptobottom.
• Lookatpicturesandaskthechildtotellwhatishappeninginthestory.
• Playwordgameswithchildren,suchasmakingupsillywordsthatrhymeorpickingoutthebeginningsoundsinwords,like“d”in“dog.”
• Talkaboutlettersbynameandsound.
• Printthechild’snameandsaytheletters.
• Playagamewiththechildrentothinkofalltheoppositestheyknow(big-little,over-under,tall-short,etc.).
• Letchildrenplaywithpencils,crayons,markers,andpaper(Remember,scribblingisafirststepinlearningtowrite).
• Givechildrenchildsafetyscissorsandoldmagazinestocutoutpictures.Cuttingbuildshandmuscles,whichareneededforwriting.
ManyadultsthinkchildrenshouldbeabletosaytheirABC’s,countto20,andknowtheircolorsandshapesbeforetheystartschool.Ifyoutalkwithakindergartenteacher,youmayhearaverydifferentanswer.
Kindergartenteacherssaythatwhatchildrenneedmostarethesocialandemotionalskillstobeginschool.Thesearethingslikebeingabletotaketurns,tocontrolthemselves,toworkinagroup,tomakefriends,totalkwithteachers
andotherchildren.Sadtosay,studiesshowthatmanychildrenstartschoolwithouttheseskills.

Getting Ready for Math• Countfingersandtoes,thedaysintheweek,blocksinthetruck,etc.
• Givechildrenthechancetousemath(Putaplateonthetableforeachchild,putablockineachholeinthebox,makesureeachchildhasapieceofpaper).
• Havechildrenlineupplasticlidsorbuttonsfrombiggesttosmallest.
Help children with the skills they need to start school.
Colors and Shapes• Pointoutsimpleshapeslikesquare,circle,andtriangle.Havethechildrenhelpyoufindtheseshapesaroundyourhome.
• Drawsillypicturesmadefromcircles,squares,andtriangles.
• Playthe“ISpy”game.Say,“Ispysomethinggreen.”Thechildrenneedtoguesswhatitis.
• Givethechildrenoldmagazines.Askthemtocutoutpicturesthatareredandpastethemonpaper.Thenfindgreenpictures,blue,etc.
• Setoutaboxofbuttonsforthechildrentosortbycolor.Putalltheredbuttonsinadish,alltheblueinanother,etc.
• Makesimplepatternsandpointthemouttochildren,suchasagreenbutton,aredbutton,green,red,etc.
Self Help Skills• Teachthechildrentousebuttonsandzipperstodressthemselves.
• Helpchildrenlearntousethebathroomandwashtheirhandswithoutneedingadulthelp.
