The Big Game A Character Sketch by Erich Weiss After a long day of construction work and a great dinner, James Weiss headed down into the mancave to watch the game. It was a big game too, against Michigan and Michigan State for the Big 10 championship. It was the most important thing in the world right now, as far as James was concerned. Nothing else mattered except Michigan creaming State. He walked down the stairs and through the hallway made of bricks and lined with washers, dryers, various school supplies, old projects and other such things. He eventually reached the main room of the basement, which was a bit spacious. In one corner was his son’s PS3, PS2, and the recentlyrevived VCR that James begrudgedly set up again. In other corner was the Wii, various board games and VHS tapes that haven’t been used in this house in years (Erich’s been taking them to Zachary’s), despite the fact that his son said “he’d get around to it.” Also in the room on one side between the PS3 and Wii, was the “family” (a.k.a. Karen’s) computer, along with various papers and CDs. On the other side was the reason James came down here in the first place, the main TV. The one used to watch satellite whenever the upstairs TV is occupied or when Karen wants peace and quiet. As he walked to the chair facing the TV, he noticed that his son, Erich was sitting on the opposite couch working on what appeared to be math homework. He was constantly moving back and forth between his textbook filled with papers and his laptop, seemingly working very intensely; however, he had a feeling he was also doing something else on that laptop. “Just coming down to watch the game, son”, said James. Erich immediately put on his headphones and continue to work as James sat down, grabbed the remote and turned on the TV. Conveniently, it was already on ESPN. He caught it just in time as the game was about to start. This is it! Michigan was going to whoop State, James knew it. Halfway into the game, things weren't looking good. At all. Michigan State was beating Michigan 27 to 3. It was insane. Impossible. The only way he could believe it was because his eyes were glued to the screen. His bushy eyebrows were in a permanent scowl. His short, grey hair was about to get even greyer and Erich wouldn’t stop laughing in front of his laptop. Must be one of his Youtube things again. Whatever, doesn’t matter. Things can’t get any worse. It’s the end of the final period. Things have somehow went from bad to worse. James could not stop cussing at the TV in a seemingly endless fit of rage. Erich would not stop laughing. James was at his wit’s end as the buzzer started counting down. His teeth started gnawing as a Michigan player starting dribbling the opposing hoop. Unfortunately, a man from State stole the ball and shot a 3pointer from all the way across the court just before the buzzer blared. James’s jaw fell open in utter shock and horror. The final score: Michigan 3, State 100. Completely devastated, James slouched back up to the stairs into the living room, where his lovely wife Karen was sitting on the couch, watching Castle like usual. As he sat
