Headmistresss News We have been very active in the closing days of term. Our Nativity play, Christmas Counts, was hugely enjoyable for the participants and audience alike. I was very impressed with how well our youngest children learned their lines and with how well they all sang. Thank you very much to all the children for their wonderful performance and thank you to all the Pre-Prep staff and Dr Harrison who prepared them so well. Equally as enjoyable were the Christingle and Carol Services on Monday. I was impressed with the quality of the readings and the outstanding singing. Well done to the children for practising hard and performing with pride; I am also very grateful to the staff for their input, in particular Dr Harrison, Mrs Robertson and Miss White. Yesterday's trip to the pantomime was great fun for all. The children behaved well, cheered, screamed and sang heartily and were super ambassadors for the School. Thank you to Mr Langley, Mrs Morse, Mrs Robertson and Miss White for their efficient organisation of this whole School excursion. Well done to Year 3 for delivering all the Christmas cards around School over the last week; 3,238 cards were sent this year! The End of Term Gathering this morning provided us with the opportunity to summarise what has been a very active and successful term. Looking back the children have achieved an awful lot in what seems such a short time! This afternoon there is much excitement as after our wonderful Christmas lunch, the Pre-Prep are looking forward to their Christmas party whilst the Year 6 pupils will be heading off to Charles Dickens Lodge in the town to entertain the elderly residents with carols and readings. I hope you all have a lovely relaxing break and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Boarders News The final weekend of boarding of the Michaelmas term was very festive. On Saturday Miss Strachan joined us to make some Christmas cards and bake some yummy cupcakes. Sunday was the much anticipated ‘Old Courts Christmas Day’.

We all stayed in our pyjamas until lunchtime. After having bacon and sausage rolls for breakfast it was time to open some presents. Mrs Robson then demonstrated how to make gingerbread houses which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. There was just time for a family game of Pictionary before lunch. The Christmas traditions continued with an afternoon

walk and a Christmas film followed by Secret Santa! After changing back into School uniform, we joined up with the rest of the boarding community, as well as many boarding parents, for the wonderful Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in the Chapel. Our youngest boarder, Freddie Whitaker, did a fantastic job of reading the first lesson. Next it was into Christmas jumpers for the boarders’ Christmas dinner which ended in rousing choruses of ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. Mr Robson

I like to move it! This term Year 2 have been strengthening their knowledge of how to correctly move and use their bodies in a game situation. This has been achieved with the help of some animals such as Colin and Cuthbert the Crabs, Skippy the Kangaroo, Barney the Bear to name but a few!

It has been a pleasure watching them applying all that they have learnt into games such as Bench Ball, Octopuses/Seaweed and Shark Attack.

Mince Py(thagoras) Anyone? Inspired by 6A’s Christ-maths Assembly – some of Year 4 wanted to know about Pythagoras’ Theory that was mentioned in the assembly. Mr Wicling, needing no further encouragement, took the children on a journey of discovery using their models of Stonehenge and pyramids.

What followed can only be described as a mathematical marvel – we had children working out the heights of their models using Pythagoras’ method. It was a joy to watch, and I certainly feel we all learnt something from the experience.

Shining stars! Year 3 enjoyed adding the finishing touches to the stick stars they had all made in Forest School this term. Some beautiful creations and not too many prickled fingers!

Recycle, recycle, recycle! As part of our new Art topic next term, I am looking for a few resources. I would be grateful for any empty, clean tin cans (eg. beans/soup cans, not drinks cans!) and plastic carrier bags (not bags for life). Also any old clothes which I can cut up would be great (t-shirts, jeans, shirts etc. No knitted items or things that will come apart when cut up!). Mrs Small

Celebrating Christmas in Chapel The children in Year 6 took the lead in two impressive Carol Services on Monday, with all children singing, some in Harmony Choir, and others reading or taking the collection. For twelve of the children in Year 6, this year’s Carol Service marked the seventh and final contribution to the Prep School Christmas celebrations in Chapel. Some of them were proud to be chosen to lead Father Darren into Chapel at the beginning of the service, bearing the large silver cross and two candles. Others took their collection duties seriously and everyone in the year group played their part magnificently. Moments like these are a source of genuine pride as we see our oldest Prep School children, some of whom we have known for many years, getting ready to move onwards and upwards through their Prep School journey. Well done to all.

When Santa got stuck up the chimney! It has been such a fun week in Year 1. We have completed lots of Christmas activities including decorating Christmas tress ornaments, making reindeer Christmas cards and getting covered in glitter making mini Father Christmas decorations. The children also loved coming up with creative suggestions as to how to help Father Christmas if he were to get stuck in a chimney.

Ho ho ho! Twenty very excited Reception children set off on their first trip away from School to see Santa Claus in his magical grotto at Raby Castle on Monday. We were delighted to discover that all of our boys and girls had made the ‘nice list’ this year! We sang songs with Santa before receiving our personalised presents and returning to School. It was a wonderful day that the children will treasure.

Marvellous Movie Nights! School Council would like to say a huge thank you to the 150 children who came to watch films on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The turnout was overwhelming and we all hope that you enjoyed the film, popcorn and hot chocolate. The Council would like to thank Mr Baker in the kitchens, Mrs Small and all the other teachers who helped to look after the children in the Atkinson Hall.

Merry Christmas from the App of the Week Fairy, Miss White!

This week a choice of websites and apps, that might prove to be of great interest to all children in the Prep School! https://santatracker.google.com/village.html allows you to track Santa across the skies as he makes his way around the world on 24th December. Until then you can play games and explore the North Pole.

http://www.noradsanta.org/ is the official Santa tracker from the North American Aerospace

Defence Command. Games and tracking facilities, Voted best Santa Tracker. Where is Santa Lite - Santa Tracker An app you can use to find out Santa’s estimated arrival time in your town or village, with a countdown timer. Millions of Santa tracking stations are set up and they will diligently report and update on Santa's every move during Christmas Eve. A complete trail of Santa's journey can be accurately traced and you won't want to miss that!

Time to party! Year 5 were set a challenge on Tuesday: to plan a Christmas party for twenty five 5-7 year olds with a budget of £150. They had to make sure they had three hours of entertainment, along with food and drinks for each child, and a party bag to take home. They had great fun and presented their information to the rest of the year group ready for us to vote for the ‘best’ party.
