Greetings from the shelter! By: Christin Klimek, LAHS Director

Recently, I came across a file that contained copies of The Barker from years past; one

from October of 2004 caught my eye. I had started the story with the following quote:

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always

reach my destination”.

In the article, I went on to talk about how fitting it was for the Lakes Area Humane

Society as the Board of Directors and myself had recently met for a strategic planning

session. During the session, we reviewed the organization’s operating policies and the

key processes. We examined the areas where we needed to “adjust our sails” to con-

tinue to serve our community, to build capacity and financial sustainability while accom-

plishing the mission of this organization.

10 years later, this quote is still very fitting. In 2014, we celebrate the huge success of

our low cost spay and neuter programs, which have greatly reduced the number of un-

wanted and abandoned animals in our community. With the reduction of incoming ani-

mals and growing animals transfer program, we are able direct more focus towards as-

sisting and finding placement for more animals with special medical and behavioral

needs. At the same time, we are faced with the challenge of less revenue generated

from impounding services and more expenses associated with these animals’ special

needs. The destination of our organization has to be fine-tuned and the course set to

allow LAHS to continue to grow and serve the animals of our community.

Our Board of Directors has accepted the challenge to be the “navigators” thru these

sometimes murky waters. Their dedication and commitment to LAHS is priceless, but

they need the help of the community, business and most importantly, you as LAHS sup-

porters. Each of you have something valuable to offer, whether it is volunteering to

become one of our navigators on our board, serve on a committee, assisting with fund-

raising, offering financial support or lending hands-on support such as facilities and

grounds maintenance. I could go on and on, the opportunities are endless. Please take

the time to consider how you can be a part of the future and direction of the LAHS.

For additional information please give us a call at the shelter at 320-759-2260.

Letters From Home…

Here is a picture of our new addition, Wadsworth (Guinea

Pig) with Pooh (Cat)!

I adopted Pooh 5 and a half years ago from LAHS and he

has been a wonderful addition to our family since then. He

has taken a liking to Wadsworth and he enjoys cuddling

and grooming him! Wadsworth has adjusted so well, he is

not afraid of our other cat, our dog, my son or my step

son. He is a very social but quiet guy! I never hear him

make a peep, even when being handled. He is just the

sweetest! Thank you so much for the opportunity to add

him to our family!

~Adopted by the Smith Family

I've been with my new family for

about a month now and I think they

like me. We go for a walk most

days, I have a nice bed to sleep in

and I stay quiet all night. I know they

really love that I don't beg for food

at the table. We play games with my

dog toys and when I get tired of that I'm a wonderful lap dog. ~ Barney

~Adopted by the Tschetter Family

This is our new adopted cat Cartwright. She is with

another adopted Lakes Area Humane Society cat,

Abbigayle ,who we adopted about three years ago. Cartwright and Abbigayle get along so well. Our adoption

process was so easy and your facility is nice to visit and

staff are great to deal with. Thank you.!

Hi! We adopted Louie this past summer

and he is doing really well! We love him,

and all his quirks (remember that he walks

himself? still does it!). Here is a photo showing him relaxing at the lake shortly

after he became part of our family. Since

then, we've learned that he is a great run-

ning buddy, he likes all other dogs, he is

slightly afraid of cats, and he likes white

wine (so we have to be very careful where

we set down a glass of it so he doesn't get

it!!). Thanks LAHS!

Drystad Family

“Boots” and her new best new best friend. She

seems very happy and is very patient with him.

More Letters From Home…

Hello! Here are some pictures of Briscoe in his new forever home. We just love him so much. He has such a

wonderful personality and is so loving. We were worried about how he would adjust to 2 dogs and 4 kids, but

came to find out he is in kitty bliss. He has about 15 favorite sleeping spots and loves to cuddle and play with

everyone, including the dogs. He has even caught a few mice. Thank you so much for doing what you do!

~”Briscoe “ Adopted by the Justice Family

Frank. settled in his new forever home!

Couldn't be happier with him! He's such a

sweet big guy, he loves his German Shepherd

sister and little Maltese brother! We can't get

enough of this slobbery angel!

This is “Merna”, who I adopted in August. As you

can see, she was very cooperative on Halloween,

take the picture so I can get these silly things off!"

She is very spoiled and is a great pet!

Pet Health….

Secondhand Smoke Can Harm Pets

A silent killer could be harming cherished pets. It is secondhand smoke and it

has been linked to several deadly health problems in animals, according to a

growing body of veterinary researchers. Nearly 30 percent of pets live with a

smoker, according to the ASPCA.

The following could happen to your pets:

Toxins in secondhand smoke can cause lung and nasal cancer in dogs and cause malignant

lymphoma or oral cancer in cats. Birds that sit on a smoker’s hand could contact dermatitis from the nicotine that remains, which

may cause them to pull out their feathers. Birds may also develop eye and respiratory problems. Nicotine is highly toxic to animals if ingested. A dog that accidentally eats tobacco could become

weak, have trouble breathing – or die. A lethal dose of nicotine in dogs can be about 20 to 100

mg. Cigarettes have 10-30 mg of the chemical and cigars can contain 15 to 40 mg. Just two

cigarette butts, if eaten by a puppy, can cause death in a relatively short period of time. Breathing problems such as asthma could develop. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction to

secondhand smoke include scratching, biting and chewing skin.

Animal lovers who need extra motivation to quit smoking should consider their pet’s health as well as

their own!
