THE BANE AND THE BLESSED
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday this week. I share with you the words of Pope Francis which he gave to us in his
remarkable Apostolic Exhortation The Joy of the Gospel.
I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or
at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one
should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by
the Lord.” The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we
come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms. Now is the time to say to Jesus: “Lord,
I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways I have shunned your love, yet here I am once more into
your redeeming embrace.” How good it feels to come back to him whenever we are lost! Let me say this once
more: God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy. Christ, who told us to
forgive one another “seventy times seven” has given us his example: he has forgiven us seventy times
seven. Time and time again he bears us on his shoulders. No one can strip us of the dignity bestowed upon
us by this boundless and unfailing love. With a tenderness which never disappoints, but is always capable of
restoring our joy, he makes it possible for us to lift up our heads and to start anew. Let us not flee from the
resurrection of Jesus, let us never give up, come what will. May nothing inspire more than his life, which
impels us onwards!
Jesus is reaching out to us always, but in a special way these forty days of Lent. Let us pray for ourselves and one
another that we will know a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ.
The Lord be with you.

ASH WEDNESDAY PRAYER
Our Liturgical Season of Lent begins Ash Wednesday, February 26
th
. The Knights of Columbus
would once again like to ask our parishioners to join them in the “40 Days of Giving” for Lent to
assist our Food Pantry Guests. This program is designed for the opportunity to take a small
sacrifice and turn it into a big difference in the lives of others.
The theme of the program is “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”. We are asking during the Season
of Lent that you put aside each day during the 40 days of Lent one Hygiene Product (a bar of hand soap, bottle
of dish soap, tube of tooth paste, tooth brush, toilet tissue, laundry detergent, deodorant, sanitary wipes, shaving
cream, razors, cleaning supplies). If you and your family would prefer to donate money (equivalent to a hygiene
product or even $1.00 a day) instead, we, in turn, would use that money to purchase the needed hygiene products.
The items can be returned to the gathering place weekly or at the end of Lent.
This is a fantastic opportunity for all to help us prepare for Easter by cleaning up our heart, mind, and soul during
our Lenten Journey while we help our sisters and brothers in Christ. Anyone interested in assisting with the program
should contact Joe LaMere at 526-2467 or at [email protected].
Losing someone close to us demands the greatest inner
strength and requires the help and wisdom of
companion grief travelers. There is much we can learn
from others who are on similar journeys. All are
welcome to join our next gathering of Good Mourning
Ministry on Monday, March 2
nd
at 1:00 pm in the guest
room at church. New resources available to any
parishioner include the following books: Don’t Take My
Grief Away From Me by Doug Manning and A Grace
Disguised: How the Soul Grows through Loss by Jerry
Sittser. See Carol or Sr. Bridget if you wish to borrow
any of these or other books we have on the grieving
process.
Merciful God,
you called us forth from the dust of the earth;
you claimed us for Christ in the waters of Baptism.
Look upon us as we enter these Forty Days
bearing the mark of ashes,
and bless our journey through the desert of Lent
to the font of rebirth.
May our fasting be hunger for justice;
our alms, a making of peace;
our prayer, the chant of humble and grateful hearts.
All that we do and pray is in the name of Jesus,
for in his Cross you proclaim you love
forever and ever.
Amen.

How conflicts can be solved.
1. Cool off first – think before acting.
2. Gather information: identify key issues without
making accusations (use of “I” statements) a. Focus on
what the issues are, not who did what b. Do not accuse,
find fault, call names c. The person states his or her
position and how the disagreement has affected them
d. Other person listens attentively and respectfully
without interruption
3. The person who was listening repeats or describes
as best he or she can the other's position to the listener's
satisfaction ("Seek first to understand, then to be
understood")
4. Both try to view the issue from other points of view.
5. Both brain storm to find godly ways to correct the
disagreement.
6. Each person volunteers what he or she can do to
resolve the conflict or solve the problem a. Receive the
sacrament of reconciliation b. Ask for forgiveness from
the person.
7. An agreement that is acceptable is reached and
agreed to; a. Progress is monitored to ensure that the
disagreement is truly solved b. Progress rewarded or
celebrated.

Laudato Si “On Care for Our Common Home” was
written by Pope Francis in 2015. We, here at
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, have not put this
encyclical on the shelf but rather continue to advocate
for and remember that the Pope’s letter requests that
all of us tackle the deteriorating relationship between
people and nature on both a personal and a
communal level.
We can achieve a closer relationship with God and
all of Creation through fasting and prayer during this
Lenten Season. Over the next few weeks we will
break open the below paragraph from the Encyclical
and offer suggestions on how to put care for our
common home into practice!
Paragraph 222. Christian spirituality proposes an
alternative understanding of the quality of life, and
encourages a prophetic and contemplative lifestyle, one
capable of deep enjoyment free of the obsession with
consumption. We need to take up an ancient lesson,
found in different religious traditions and also in the
Bible. It is the conviction that “less is more”. A constant
flood of new consumer goods can baffle the heart and
prevent us from cherishing each thing and each moment.
To be serenely present to each reality, however small it
may be, opens us to much greater horizons of
understanding and personal fulfilment. Christian
spirituality proposes a growth marked by moderation
and the capacity to be happy with little. It is a return to
that simplicity which allows us to stop and appreciate
the small things, to be grateful for the opportunities
which life affords us, to be spiritually detached from
what we possess, and not to succumb to sadness for
what we lack. This implies avoiding the dynamic of
dominion and the mere accumulation of pleasures.
RICE BOWLS
We are called
Join our faith community—
and more than 14,000
Catholic communities across
the United States—in a life-
changing Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up
your family’s CRS Rice Bowl from the gathering place
starting on Ash Wednesday. When you donate to
CRS Rice Bowl, even a small offering has the
potential to feed many. Jesus fed thousands with a
few loaves of bread and two fish. Let us follow his
example, committing our 40-day Lenten journey to
meeting the needs of our global human family.
