47th ANNUAL RIVER RECREATION FESTIVAL

SURVIVES POWER OUTAGE AND HIGH TEMP

The 47th

Annual River Recreation Festival is now

history, but it actually made history, as a survi-

vor of widespread power outages and extreme

high temperatures, often in excess of a 100 de-

gree heat index. Both the temperature and the

power outage influenced the attendance, but

the dedicated Committee, vendors, crafters,

amusement rides and entertainers were there,

in the Gallipolis City Park, Tuesday evening

through Saturday night. Lorie Neal, IOM, Execu-

tive Director of this annual Gallia County Cham-

ber of Commerce event, expressed her appreci-

ation to all those who made the Festival possi-

ble. “The weather was not in our favor through-

out the five days”, Neal said, “but everyone made the best of it”.

From the Opening Ceremony on Tuesday evening,

July 3rd

, until the close of the Festival on Saturday

evening, the 7th

, featuring truly outstanding fire-

works, it was a very busy five day event. Amuse-

ment Rides were open, as were the many food ven-

dors on First Avenue, with nearly 50% being local

entities, and crafters in the City Park. A large crowd

watched the Royalty Parade on Tuesday evening,

preceding the Junior Miss and Festival Queen Pag-

eants. This year’s Junior Miss is Riley Sanders,

with 1st

Runner Up McKenzie Siders. The Festival Queen,

who will reign during the coming year, is Josie Vanco,

with Cheyenna Bowers as 1st

Runner Up. To conclude the

evening, Country Roads entertained on the Main Stage.

Wednesday, the 4th

, was a busy day from early morning un-

til late that evening. It all began with the Baby Tot Spar-

kler contest at 9 o’clock, followed by the Lil’ Miss and Mis-

ter Firecracker Contest. The heat did not discourage a

record turnout of children and their families. The Talent

Show was an afternoon feature, followed by the Rotary Mile competition and the

Independence Day Parade, with almost 100 entries coming down Second Ave-

nue. With the theme HOMETOWN PROUD, prizes were

awarded in nine (9) categories. They were:

Best Theme – Gallipolis Junior Women’s Club

Best Religious – Elizabeth Chapel Church

Best Old Car – Larry Marr

Most Original – Pleasant Valley Hospital

Best Decorated – Holzer Health System

Most Patriotic – Gallipolis Developmental Center

Best Youth – Southern Ohio Gymnastics Association

Best Walking – Gallia Academy Cheerleaders

Best Musical – Gallia Academy High School Band

The Annual Live Auction, featuring Auctioneer Josh Bodimer, attracted many

buyers, with a variety of items for bidding including a room & board package to

the University of Rio Grande (valued at over $8,000). Following the auction, to

conclude Wednesday evening, was a Street Dance, with Prime Time Entertain-

ment providing the music.

It was quiet in the Park both Thursday and Friday during the day, with activities

beginning at 5 o’clock both evenings. Four groups appeared on the Main Stage

Thursday evening: Still Water, The Dub V’s, Bekers Brew and, to close the even-

ing “Silent Susan”, featuring Nashville stars Morgan Myles and Matt King. Thurs-

day was Chamber Appreciation Night, with a real special on the Amusement

Rides: buy one wrist band and get the second one free…a real bargain. The food

vendors were kept busy, and people were shopping at the tents in the Park.

Friday evening also began at 5 pm, with amusement rides and vendors open for

business. A highlight was the Second Annual Wiener Dog Race, followed by the

Doggie Fashion Show. Entertaining on the Main Stage throughout the evening

Queen Josie Vanco with the Lil’

Miss & Mr. Firecracker and their

1st Attendants.

was CHROME, a very talented group from Cincinnati.

KIDS DAY on Saturday was another really big day. Even

though the temperature was at a peak, children came

out to enjoy “their day” at the Festival. There were ac-

tivities throughout the day, with a prize given away to a

lucky child every 30 minutes. Through the ongoing ef-

forts of Gwen Doss, Chair, there were over 150 prizes

awarded that day! A special visitor to entertain the

children during the afternoon was Musical Mark, performing near the Kids Tent

and strolling through the Park.

In addition, it was also Gospel Day, with outstanding gospel music performed

on the Main Stage from 1 pm until 6 pm, by Ordinary People,

New Southern Harmony, New City Singers, Rick Towe and

the Singing Shafers. Many braved the hot weather to sit in

their lawn chairs and enjoy the inspiring music.

Featured at 8 o’clock on Saturday evening, as the sun went

down and there were a few breezes off the River to help low-

er the heat, the Ohio Valley Symphony performed on a spe-

cial stage, erected on Court Street, with the Dukes of Dixie-

land as their special guests. Following their great perfor-

mance, the Split the Pot Drawing took place, with Jason

Northup the lucky winner.

To conclude the 47th

Annual River Recreation Festival, a tremendous crowd en-

joyed spectacular fireworks at 10 o’clock, accompanied by the Ohio Valley

Symphony. Throughout the evening the vendors, both in the Park and along

First Avenue, attracted customers.

It was an outstanding Festival, in spite of the heat and

the power outages. Neal wants to thank Amy Weaver,

Festival Chair, and all of the Committee who worked

so hard throughout the year to put together this year’s

Festival; the many sponsors, vendors, crafters and vol-

unteers who gave so much before and during the Festi-

val.

Already, plans are underway for the 48th

Annual River

Recreation Festival in July, 2013.
