Del Rio student writers make views knownBY CHANDLER BASCONCILLO, HAYLEEMCDONNELL, AND JAZMINE RAMEY(Fifth-grade students at Del Rio Elementary)

re budget cuts affectingstudents’ education? Wehave been affected andconcerned by all thebudget cuts. We areespecially worriedabout all the teachers

losing their jobs. Our school hasgotten many new students, butstill has overcrowding in class-rooms. Students’ education is atstake. With so many students in aclass, how are students going toget a proper education?

We have interviewed a fewstudents to see their thoughts onthis subject. Here are theresponses we got in regards tothe budget cuts affecting Del RioElementary School:

Anthony Leonis responded bysaying, “It is horrible because weneed good teachers to help us get

a good education.”Dakota Kass, a fifth-grader in

Mr. King’s class, commentedthat, “It is terribly upsettingbecause some students won’t begetting the education they need.Cuts will also hurt students’chances of getting into a good

college one day.”Jordyn Ellis, a fifth-grader at

Del Rio Elementary School, wasasked whether anybody was get-ting a better education now thanthey did before all the budgetcuts. She responded by saying,“No, because there are less

teachers and materials to teachstudents with.”

We also interviewed a fewteachers at Del Rio to see whattheir thoughts were on the mat-ter. Mrs. Townsend, a first-gradeteacher, was asked how shethought all the budget cuts wouldaffect her students. “I think itwill affect the students evenmore than the teachers. Therewon’t be enough supplies andthere will be too many studentsin one class. They (students)won’t be getting enough atten-tion. We will have to ask for waytoo much from parents.”

Mrs. Dennis, another first-grade teacher at Del Rio, wasalso asked her opinion on thebudget cuts. “It is very sad and itwill be hard for students to getthe education they need if thereare more students in a class-room. Schools are losing a lot ofamazing teachers that need to be

working with kids.”We felt that our campus princi-

pal, Mr. Carlile, should be includ-ed in the topic, so we asked whathis thoughts were on budget cutsaffecting students’ education.“The budget cuts will affect stu-dents’ education, but at whatdegree, we don’t know yet. Lastyear, we had to raise the numberof kindergartners to 30 per class-room.”

Mr. Carlile added, “No matterhow bad it gets, I have faith inour teachers and students. Ourkids deserve the best.”

As it is clear, the students,teachers, and principal areunhappy with the budget cuts.We think our school speaks forall of California when we say weare still working hard on makingthe best with what we have.Through everything, budget cutsincluded, the students are payingthe highest price — their future.

The event is a parent club fundraiser toprovide educational experiences for stu-dents which the Panama Buena VistaUnion School District is unable to provide.There will be a huge car and motorcycleshow, craft fair, student show featuringstudent’s bicycles, scooters, pedal cars,and much more.

Van Horn students will judge the carsand motorcycles to determine the winnersin 21 categories.

There will be fun for the ladies andchildren, plus plenty of good food.

Also, there will be an art/hobby display

put on by the deaf and hard of hearing stu-dents of Kern County.

This event promises to keep everymember of your family entertained.

Ballet Theatre rolling outmagic carpet for ‘Aladdin’BY WYNDI BALDENCommunity contributor

he Bakersfield BalletTheatre, under the direc-tion of Martha Knight, ispreparing for theirupcoming performance

of “Aladdin,” which will be at theCSUB Doré Theatre, Friday, Sat-urday and Sunday, March 27-29.

“Aladdin” is an artistic por-trayal of the classic tale per-formed with outstanding danc-ing, all choreographed byKnight. This exciting perform-ance has been in preparation formore than a year. It includesextravagant hand-made cos-tumes and scenery constructedspecifically for this show, alldesigned by Knight.

Knight has been a balletinstructor and director in Bak-ersfield for more than 50 years. Afew of her other productionsinclude “Sleeping Beauty,”“King of Glory” and “TheNightingale.”

Knight is a perfectionist whenit comes to her shows and shemakes all of her visions come tolife on stage. She trains herdancers to a proficiency to make

them able to perform in her pro-ductions. But not only does sheteach her students to dance, shealso teaches responsibility anddedication.

However, everything aboutKnight’s ballet company and per-formances is a shared effortbetween the dancers, their par-ents and Knight.

Dancers performing in“Aladdin” range from 6 years ofage and up. Some of Knight’sdancers have been with her forjust a few months and others havebeen dancing with her companyfor close to 25 years.

The Bakersfield Ballet The-atre is a family-oriented compa-ny where even dads of dancersparticipate in the show as mer-chants.

Elise Anchordoquy, 19, playsthe part of Aladdin. Whilerehearsing every night and evensome weekends, Elise is alsoattending Bakersfield Collegefull time in preparation for hertransfer to Biola Universitywhere she will major in commu-nication disorders.

Elise says this performancehas “been fun, but a definite

challenge.”Alexandria Lightsey, 19, plays

the princess with whom Aladdinfalls in love. She is also a full-time student at Bakersfield Col-lege, preparing to transfer to CalPoly San Luis Obispo to major inEnglish, with the possibility of

pursuing a law degree.“Even though rehearsals are

tough at times, ballet keeps megoing,” Lightsey said. “It is myescape from school and everydaylife.”
