appeared much grander than Schonbrunn, much less gloomy than the Hofburg. But as we drew closer, I noticed that though the palace was imposing, it was not well kept-the fountains weren’t playing; statues lay broken; the grounds were littered with trash.” (77)Middle: “The Petite Trianon was beautiful but not to me. The furnishings, though sumptuous, were definitely not to my taste. Huge paintings in the grand dining room depicted scenes of fishing, hunting, and harvesting grains and grapes, and all them featured a great many nude bosoms and buttocks. They might have suited Madame Du Berry, and probably Grandfather King as well, but they didn’t suit me. They would have to go. And I imagined gardens in the English style, charmingly wild and uncultivated, very free and romantic, not the rigidly geometric gardens that now surrounded the chateau”(193)End: “A hamlet , an entire rustic village,’ I explained. ‘Everything must be simple, like a real peasant village.’ I wanted a special place for my and my children to get away from the castle life. I wanted cows and sheep and a little garden in which I would get our food.”(244)

To show this book was a true historical fiction I wanted to put places that are in history that Marie Antoinette visited. These places also are big proof of fiction.

Attribute: Historical Beginning : “I awoke on a cold winter mourning at the beginning of 1769 to discover not my beloved Bradeis but a woman I scarcely knew sitting in the governess’s chair near the porcelain stove.”(11) Middle: “In the early months of 1777 we prepared to receive a important visitor: my brother Emperor Joseph the 2nd.” (207) End: “August 2,1793 , was a night of suffocating heat. At two ‘o’ clock in the mourning as we tossed restlessly in our beds, four officers arrived-a different group this time.” (395)

Explain: To help explain how this was historical I decided to focus on the exact times in this book. There are a lot of them and help a reader understand what event is happening a what time in Marie Antoinette’s life.

Marie-Antoinette, queen of France, was dead.” (405)

EvaluationThis story is a historical fiction because it is based on the life and death of Marie Antoinette. This story has details on the small facts of her life like time, dates, and places. The research used to create this story was very helpful in making it a great story. Even though Klein used a little imagination to help a reader get a idea of what Marie was thinking throughout the book, it still was made out of hard core facts. Sadly, the story of Marie Antoinette is a doomed one. Everyone knows in the end she lost the hopes of the French people and also her head. Her struggles though and her attempts to not allow Rules Of Etiquette rule her life make it interesting to read. Her main struggle for the beginning was having children. The middle was her spending. And at the end was trying to keep the French Third Estate happy and protecting her family and hopefully escaping her castle prison life. Even like I said Marie’s story is from the beginning a doomed one it’s her attempts to have herself stand out make a reader forget her tragic end.
