Mexican League Soccer Enters Final Stretch With three weeks left of regular season play, the strong contenders for the Liguilla playoffs are becom- ing increasingly obvious. Although Club America had its 28 game win streak three weeks ago, the Aguilas are nonetheless still in first place and have already quali- fied for postseason play. Following Club America in the overall standings and in first place of group three is Cruz Azul. Cruz Azul shutout Veracruz 1-0 last week and appears to be on track as the season end nears. Dear Friends Hispanic Heritage Month is behind us, but our enthusiasm towards this community never fades. As the only true Hispanic network Azteca America commemorates our Hispanic heritage every day: you could simply turn on your TV set in any of the 39 cities with AzA cover- age to attest. Common paths to the televisionbusiness include the sales and/ormarketing side or the productionside. However, it’s not so oftenthat a general manager comescomplete with his own top-ratedlocal weekday program.

This is the case of Orlando Rosalesand his wife Mayela Rosales. Witha month of Orlando as generalmanager of the station, the coupleis entering into a partnershipagreement with station ownerGaston Castens and the futureappears bright. Originally fromVenezuela, where Orlando was acomputer engineer and Mayelathe creative director for a DDBadvertising agency affiliate, thetwo had all the tools they neededto succeed in the business.

Their weekday show, D’Latinos isthe top show in southwesternFlorida and currently aires on bothAzteca America in the evening at5 pm and on UPN in the morn-ings.

“Our next step will be local news.But in the meantime, we already

have a very strong local presence,”said Orlando.

Although the program has been onthe air for over three years in Ft.Myers, it has been a weekday pro-gram since the beginning of theyear and an hour-long program fora month now.

Without Hispanic books in Ft.Myers, Orlando says that one of thebarometers he uses is numbers of

clients, adding that his show, whichis now in Azteca America, hasestablished clients that the competi-tion can’t touch.

To boost cross-promotion efforts,Orlando also publishes a monthlymagazine that recently dedicated anissue to Azteca America and hasseveral promotions running withweekly magazines and local radio.

Although Ft. Myers is still lackingcable coverage from the localComcast and Time Warner opera-tors, he is optimistic that an agree-ment can be reached in comingmonths.

The first two finishes of eachgroup and the next best twoteams advance to the liguilla.

Jaguares de Chiapas were thecause of America’s downfall with a4-3 win during week 12, then theysteam rolled 5-1 over Pumas andthis week they tied 1-1 withAtlante’s potros. They now holdthe third place in group 2 with 19points and position themselves asa dark horse contender if theycontinue with the upsets.

The Tiburones Rojos of Veracruzfollowed Jaguares’ example andbeat America the following week2-1 in the Azteca Stadium for thefirst time in 35 years. Neverthelesswith a defeat this week they arenow a distant fourth in group two,there is little hope of the squadmaking it to the liguilla.

Santos, Tecos and MonarcasMorelia are technically still in con-tention with 17, 18 and 17 pointsrespectively. However, each of thethree teams would have to bealmost flawless during the finalweeks to make it into postseasonplay.

Amateur soccer was at its best onOct. 22, when the champions of theCopa Tecate amateur tournamentdefeated the Monarcas Moreliafeeder team 1-0. The Copa Tecatesquad, Alta Vista, from El Paso Texas,scored its first goal during the first

half of the match and managed tokeep the Monarcas squad scorelessfor the rest of the game.

Following the match, members ofthe Alta Vista squad were theguests of honor of a MonarcasMorelia professional game againstSantos. The Tecate champs werepresented on the field by the gameannouncer before the start of thematch. And their presenceappeared to bring good luck to theMorelia pros, given that they wereable to overcome a five-game dryspell as they beat Santos 1-0.

Names & FacesJorge Jaidar • VicePresidentof Operations and now alsoGM of KAZA

in Los Angeles

Jorge will be overseeing opera-tions of our flagship station KAZAin Los Angeles in addition to hisresponsibilities as COO of thenetwork.

The synergies between the net-work operations and KAZA arestrong, given that Los Angeles isthe largest Hispanic market in thecountry. And with KAZA’s newly-

inaugurated digital studio, thestation has production capacityfor its local programs as well asUS-based network productions,such as the recently-launchedCalles al Desnudo (see p. xxx).

Jorge joined TV Azteca in 1997 inthe finance department as direc-tor of information, where hecompiled data for Azteca’s CFO.Following an innovative rate-cardpricing strategy, he moved tosales, where he was director ofstrategy and planning.
