AVID Secondary

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by

preparing all students for college

readiness and success in a global society.

Schoolwide AVID

AVID is schoolwide when a strong AVID implementation transforms a school’s

LEADERSHIP,

SYSTEMS,

INSTRUCTION,

and CULTURE,

ensuring college readiness for all students in the AVID elective and improved academic performance for all students based on increased opportunities.

What Matters in Student Learning?

Pascarella and Terenzini (2011):

• Encounters with challenging ideas and people

• Active engagement with those challenges

• Supportive environments

• Meaningful, real-world activities

• Relational, interpersonal activities

• Opportunities for reflection and analysis

More of What We Know…

Students continue to move through secondary

education deficient in reading and writing.

• Students are placed in remedial coursework based on

entrance exams. Proficient – SAT: 550 on Critical

Reading; SAT Writing: 680; ACT Writing: 24; AP

Language and Literature exams: 3 or more.

Research tells us that students are college-prepared,

but not college-ready.

AVID is the Great Equalizer.

AVID closes the achievement

gap for all students
