The Summer Soirée is just around the corner! We are enthusiastically planning an evening packed full of fun and surprises. It is sure to kick off the summer social season in grand fashion. Our French Carnival themed event will include high flying live entertainment, carnival games to play, delicious dinner and dancing to the sounds of H.Y.P.E.

Proceeds from the Summer Soirée will benefit the NorthShore Orthopaedic Institute and specifically the research of Dr. Jason Koh.

This important work will allow physicians to better treat musculoskeletal injuries by examining the use of new materials and growth factors for cartilage, ligament and bone. Further development will help harness the body’s own healing potential, leading to improved patient outcomes and a platform for expanded research.

Please mark your calendars and join us Saturday, June 11 at The Geraghty. You won’t want to miss this exciting night!

President’s LetterI am sitting in front of my office window looking at a bright blue sky, trees budding and flowers peeking through the ground. Oh, how I hope Mother Nature is not going to play an April Fool’s joke. Spring may just be around the corner. Fingers crossed.

As we look forward to Spring, we look forward to our Spring

Meeting! I would like to invite all of you to attend the Wednesday, May 11 breakfast meeting being held at Indian Hill Club, sponsored by Past President Barbara Balsley. We will be celebrating the 80th Anniversary of The Auxiliary, as well as honoring past Gala Chairs. The featured speaker will be J.P. Gallagher, Chief Operating Officer of NorthShore University HealthSystem. We hope you can join us for this special day.

In June, get ready for Summer Soirée: La fête du Carnaval!! Co-Chairs Buggie O’Grady and Nancy Semerdjian have been hard at work planning an evening of fun, fabulous entertainment and food. Did I mention fun?? This year’s Soirée will be held at The Geraghty, a new exciting event space, and will support Jason Koh, MD’s “Regenerative Medicine to Restore an Active Life.” At the NorthShore Orthopaedic Institute, physicians are already using regenerative medicine techniques such as tissue transplantation, cell therapy and growth factors to help patients live active and pain-free lives.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars now for the American Craft Exposition (ACE), which will once again be held at the beautiful Chicago Botanic Garden. ACE Co-Chairs Debbie Kerr and Dana Turban are busy planning for another fabulous Show. The Benefit Preview Party will be held on Thursday, September 22. The Show will run from Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25. Proceeds will benefit NorthShore’s innovative pharmacogenomics program, where researchers are analyzing and predicting how patients react to medications based on their genetic variants ensuring that patients get the right medication in the right dose the first time.

We will be celebrating 80 years of our history at the May 11 Spring Meeting and I am looking forward to another 80 years of contributions yet to be made. I want to take this opportunity to personally thank you for all you do. We are indeed an amazing group of women.

ACE 2016 – Another Beautiful Show in the Garden!ACE Co-Chairs Debbie Kerr and Dana Turban are eager to share with you details about the upcoming 32nd annual American Craft Exposition to be held at the Chicago Botanic Garden this September. Energized by the move to the Garden and success of last year’s show, Debbie and Dana are working with their committee chairs to make ACE 2016 truly unique and a very successful fundraiser.

The Show will continue to feature the best-of-the-best American artisans in 13 different categories, including the ever-popular Emerging Artist category. ACE 2016 will run September 23-25 with the Benefit Preview Party on Thursday evening, September 22. The weather last year was spectacular and show attendees and artists alike enjoyed the gorgeous backdrop of the Garden while shopping for one-of-a-kind craft. Many artists were so inspired by the Garden that they have created new pieces of work incorporating the Garden’s beautiful features. We are sure some of these pieces will be prominently displayed during ACE 2016!

A lot was learned after our first year at the Garden and Debbie and Dana will be making a few changes to ACE 2016 that will make the Show a better experience for all. The Show will be a bit smaller and will have a better layout. You will notice better signage and healthier food options in the Show concession stands.

Another exciting change is the recipient of funds raised. Funding from ACE will support NorthShore’s innovative pharmacogenomics study. Researchers will analyze and predict how patients react to medications based on genetic variants. This information can be used to customize medical treatments, minimizing the side effects and adverse reactions to drugs for patients.

We are extremely grateful to our ACE 2016 sponsors: Keystone Capital, Inc., Clyde Smith McGregor and LeAnn Pedersen Pope, Eckenhoff Saunders Architects, Jamerson & Bauwens Electrical Contractors, Inc., Metaphrasis Language & Cultural Solutions, Whitehall of Deerfield and Aramark.

Please mark the ACE dates in your calendar and share them with your friends. The Show will be beautiful and you won’t want to miss the opportunity to see old friends and meet exciting new artists. We look forward to seeing you in September for the 32nd Annual American Craft Exposition at the Chicago Botanic Garden!

Auxiliary Volunteer ActivitiesThe Auxiliary once again hosted Diapers in December, a diaper drive to benefit NorthShore’s Perinatal Family Support Center. The need is great and never ending, and diapers of all sizes were appreciated. The Auxiliary donated over 15,000 diapers this year! The Perinatal Family Support Center is so very appreciative of The Auxiliary’s efforts.

This year, The Auxiliary is offering three $5,000 college scholarships to high school seniors in our core service area who plans to pursue an education in the field of nursing. Auxiliary members find this scholarship is continuously a well-directed effort to support our community. The deadline for applications will be May 1, so stay tuned to see who The Auxiliary will award the scholarship to this year.

The Angel CampaignThe Angel Campaign has kicked off for 2016! Angel signers came together on January 19 and 20 to stuff, sign and seal almost 2,000 letters. The letters were mailed in early February, with a second round of letters being sent in May. The return envelopes are arriving in the office and we are excited to begin tallying this year’s contributions. Stay tuned for the total amount raised from this annual campaign, which has already surpassed $80,000 thanks to your efforts.

Thank you, again, to all Auxiliary members who participated in Angel Campaign! Everyone enjoyed talking, writing their Angel notes and dining on a delicious lunch provided by Angel Co-Chairs Melissa David and Laura Koh. Special thanks to Melissa David for graciously hosting the group!

Save The Dates:

Membership UpdatesThis year we are working on growing our Board by at least six new members. We are already off to a great start, having welcomed three new members to date. We have been the fortunate recipient of many referrals and inquiries drawing from our engaged members and our community-at-large. The Membership committee has been hosting coffee meetings with interested prospects who approach the Board due to their friendship and/or knowledge of our group of talented women.

In mid-December, Auxiliary Board Member Claudine Gerbel hosted a holiday party for current and potential members. The evening was filled with wine, hors d’oeuvres and mingling with fellow Auxiliary members!

In March, The Auxiliary hosted our first Lunch & Learn session at NorthShore Evanston Hospital. Our speaker, Debbie Kirkorsky, VP Medical Group, enlightened our attendees by describing the many features of NorthShore’s own app, NorthShore Connect. A Mediterranean-inspired lunch immediately followed, catered by Evanston Hospital, and tied in nicely with our Board meeting’s featured speaker, who shared tips on healthy eating to promote brain health. Watch for details on our next Lunch & Learn to be held in November.

Please feel free to contact a member of the Membership Committee if you have friends or business associates who might enjoy joining this wonderful group!
