Coniston Water is set within a steep U-shaped valley in Cumbria, and is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Lake District. Our Coniston bath refl ects its namesake with a natural curved profi le and

steep sides, and like all C.P. Hart’s collection of contemporary freestanding baths, is designed and manufactured in England. The composite material is light but immensely strong, so the bath walls can be slim and sculpted. It also retains heat far more effectively than enamelled cast iron or steel,

Based in Bremen, Knief & Co is a small, family-owned manufacturer of stoneware and ceramics with a reputation for bold design and innovation. After developing their own solid surface material for baths and sanitaryware they commissioned award-winning British designer Peter Jamieson to take advantage of its unique properties and create a set of contemporary bathroom collections.

BATH with ClassThe Edwardian elegance of a traditional English bathroom has never been more desirable, in the UK or abroad. Whether it is a renewed appreciation of craftsmanship, or the ‘Downton Abbey’ effect, at C.P. Hart we have always specialised in the best of traditional design. As our Principle Showroom Designer, Daniel Cook, explains, there is more choice than many people realise; “Typically customers start with a cast iron bath, such as our Winchester or Roll Top. These are both fine choices, but bear in mind that these baths are heavy, and you need to be sure that they can be safely manoeuvred into place and the floor is strong enough to support them. Alternatively,

there are manufacturers that use advanced materials technology to realise traditional freestanding designs. C.P. Hart’s London bath is a fantastic example, English-made in a light and durable composite that naturally retains heat. Designed to complement our London sanitaryware, it’s the best of both worlds.”

Note that these high-tech materials are completely different from the low cost acrylic copies that are often sold online, with their tendency to discolour and split. The Aurelius (pictured above) and Magnus, for example, are modern interpretations of 19th century baths that reflected the Victorian obsession

with classical architecture. Again, a solid composite material is an almost indestructible replacement for the fragile fireclay original.

Cook offers a final piece of advice: “If you can, see the bath you like in a showroom and get in. Kick off your shoes – you can keep your clothes on! – and step into it. See if it fits you. Is it wide or long enough? Will it be comfortable for a long soak? Our flagship showroom at Waterloo has over 40 baths to test out, and I strongly recommend a visit.”

After you’ve chosen your bath you may be surprised at the range of brassware available to complement it. The market is led by German brands Axor, Dornbracht and Hansgrohe. Axor are renowned for their collaborations with leading designers such as Philippe Starck and Jean-Marie Massaud. These collections make a statement of their own, and suit baths with simple profiles. Architects often recommend Dornbracht. They trust in the brand’s exceptional manufacturing quality. Consider the slim and unobtrusive Dornbracht Lulu, or the distinctive curve of Dornbracht Mem which follows the natural arc of flowing water. Both are included in our Autumn Event.

For Italian flair, look to Gessi’s sophisticated and sensual brassware collections. From Gessi’s iSpa, inspired by Steve Job’s crowning achievement, to Cono, an essay in uncomplicated elegance. Both would work with any contemporary freestanding bath. C.P. Hart Senior Buyer Angela Cheung has this advice for choosing brassware, “Remember that the

brassware has to complement your basin and your freestanding bath. An angular design works well with a square or rectangular basin, and suits the more sculptural baths. I often match a bath with a natural, organic shape to furniture with a round countertop basin and brassware with softer, curved lines. Also consider whether you need a hand-held shower, as not all bath mixers include this option”

A traditional bathroom with a cast iron freestanding bath should have classic brassware, such as C.P. Hart’s Leonardo or Axor’s Montreux.
