The New York Herald of July 2d, 3d, 6th, 7th, 10th, nth and 14th,

1888, gives the names and addresses of men, high in the social and business

community in which they lived, who obtained by fraud during the years 1878to 1888, nearly $71,000,000. About $31,000,000 of this sum was obtained

on raised monetary paper.

No mention is made of any raised sum amounting to less than $2,000.

Professional check raisers are not included in this statement.

The N. Y. Herald makes the following comment : "In every one of

these instances the criminal was either a trusted employee, a confidential

book-keeper or clerk, a trustee, or some one in whose honesty every one

had full and implicitconfidence."
