The Australian Woodturning Exhibition

In this my last report as President of the Whitehorse Woodturners, I welcome you to the 2015 Australian Woodturning Exhibition. I confidently expect the standard of workmanship and the innovations in design will continue to be of the high standard we have come to expect from previous years.

I must first thank all the members of Whitehorse Woodturners over the past seven years, and especially those during the last 12 months, for their hard work and dedication to the presentation of this exhibition. We also appreciate the assistance and support given by members of Koonung, Manningham Woodcraft, and Waverley clubs who have so willingly given their time in preparing and manning this year’s exhibition.

To our generous Sponsors, who have continued to support us in these difficult times, I extend our grateful thanks, and request that members, visitors, and especially prize winners, support their businesses, mentioning our appreciation. For your information the Sponsors are listed at the end of this catalogue.

The committee also wishes to thank the Judges for giving their time and expertise in conducting the arduous process of comparing the various pieces to ascertain the category winners.

We send our appreciation of the efforts of Daryle Broadhurst and Peter Oppenheim who resigned from the committee during the past year.

We must also extend a special thanks to Stuart and Dianne and their team for organising the magnificent display of the exhibits. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

To all our exhibitors, we thank you for entering, for without you there would not be an exhibition. We hope you have gained something from entering, either as a place winner or by the recognition of the fine quality of your work as it is displayed in this fine setting.

The committee congratulates the entrants whose pieces gained the ultimate recognition of their work by gaining a prize or award.

At this time we are also pleased to announce the launch of our new website www.awtex.com.au. We would like to take this opportunity to make a special thank you to Swinburne University, and in particular Kim Nguyen, Caroline Hartanto and Gemma Bouwmeester, who have worked tirelessly on developing this site. We wish them well in their future careers.

Finally, I want to pass on my best wishes to the continuing committee members and my hopes that the exhibition continues to flourish.

Please enjoy the exhibition.

Ray Dennis President, Whitehorse Woodturners

Committee: Saadi El-Behiesi, Soren Grejsen, Donal Kelman, Rachelle Leaver, Bill David, Stuart Watson.

JUDGES

Our thanks are extended to the judges once again for performing what is a difficult task. The committee has appointed two teams of judges, one team judging the Open and Intermediate Sections and the other the Novice and Student sections.

Judging the Open & Intermediate

Ted Anderson Ted served an apprenticeship as a vehicle builder. He studied part time to learn draughting skills, then worked in a drawing office where he learnt about line and form. He discovered woodturning through a friend. Ted was self-taught with the help of more experienced wood turners. He found a liking for segmented work and discovered the colours of Australian timbers were suitable for that type of work. Ted has written several articles about laminated works, which have been published here and overseas. He has also judged several wood turning and woodworking shows. Ted has sold much of his work to serious collectors and through galleries. His awards include the Australian Wood Design, Orbost in 1994-2001, Australian Woodturning Exhibition in 1996-2000 and the Winterfest award in 2001.

Chris Bennett Chris has been a wood turner for more than 30 years and is the owner of Pop’s Shed – a Woodturning and carving specialist supplies business based in Chirnside Park, Victoria.

Chris has been teaching Wood Turning for the last 6 years and continues to have a passion for beautiful timber and collecting and producing wood art.

Chris was a Partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers for many years and was a specialist in Technology consulting. He was also the CEO of SAP Australia for a number of years.

Bob Kirkland For as long as he can remember Bob has had an interest in woodcraft and in his late teens, built his first lathe from plans in Popular Mechanics. A family friend, who was a retired cabinetmaker, gave him some homemade tools and what information he could about turning.

Turning took a back seat for some time as Bob concentrated on marriage, raising a family, and work. When he retired from the Country Fire Authority he acquired a modern lathe (early seventies style) and new tools and he started turning full time.

Bob taught woodturning for Adult Education for twenty plus years. He has judged at many exhibitions over the years and is a former councillor on the Crafts Council of Victoria and Life Member of the Warragul Woodworkers Club.

JUDGES

Judging the Novice & Student

John McBrinn John began working with wood as an apprentice carpenter and joiner in Northern Ireland at the age of 15. He worked as a carpenter in the building trade in Northern Ireland until he immigrated with hisfamily to Australia in 1970. He worked as a sub contractor carpenter in the building trade. He took up wood turning when he retired in 2006.

Peter Oppenheim As a graduate in horticulture and economics, Peter has a background and an interest in trees. His interest in wood turning began in 1973 when he watched olive wood being turned. After seeing a gnarled old log turn into a glistening candlestick his interest was fired. However, he was only able to devote himself to woodturning when he retired in 2010. Since then Peter has developed an interest in ornamental turning. He is particularly interested in the style of turning that was popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th century which features different forms of spheres and Chinese Balls in conjunction with ornamental lathe or rose engine turnings. Peter has exhibited and been successful at various Exhibitions, he is a member of the Peninsula Woodturning Guild, the American Association of Woodturners and the Society of Ornamental Turners.

Cliff Walsh Before retiring, Cliff was a patternmaker, school teacher and a registered builder. Needing a hobby, woodturning seemed to be a natural choice. After successes in both Victoria and interstate Exhibitions, he decided to specialise in segmented woodturning. Cliff introduced the “open segmenting” technique to Australia after seeing it demonstrated at a Symposium in USA.

Cliff has had judging experience, having been a judge at the Lilydale Show twice, the Knox Woodworkers annual Exhibition several times and twice at the Australian Woodturning Exhibition both Novice and Open.

His work has been published in: 500 Bowls (Lark Books), Woodturning magazine, and the Australian Woodworker. He regularly teaches beginners at the Forest Hill Woodturners club. He is or has been a member of the Victorian Woodworkers Association, Central Woodturners, Bellarine Woodworkers, Yarra Turners and the American Association of Woodturners.
