For the first time in many years the Department of Philosophy was fully staffed. The vacant temporary lectureship was filled at senior tutor's level by Mr. Ross Poole who came to us from the University of Sydney. We were assisted in our teaching by Dr. Robert Brown from the Institute, who supervised one of our honours students in a special course of philosophical logic, and by Messrs. Graham Kerrison, Robert Nola, Reginald Naulty, John Kleinig and by Miss Elizabeth Reid who acted as part-time tutors. Professor Quentin Gibson was absent throughout the year on study leave.
Teaching:
The department offered six units for the pass degree together with two full units and six half units for the honours degree. Philosophy of Mathematics, intended specifically for the combined honours degree in Pure Mathematics and Philosophy was taught for the first time. One candidate for the degree of M.A. was supervised by the department.

During the year we had visits from Professors R.M. Hare from the University of Oxford, Max Black from Cornell University, and from Mr. William Weinstein from Balliol College Oxford. Series of seminars were arranged by the Department of Philosophy in the Research School of Social Sciences for each of these visitors. This department participated fully. The subject of Professor Hare's seminars was the theory of speech acts and of Mr. Weinstein's the concert of liberty. Professor Black conducted seminars on a variety o topics.
Other Activities:
The Annual Conference of the Australasian Association of Philosophy was held in Canberra this year. The organizing secretary was Mr. K. Lycos. Professor Herbst was elected President for the ensuing year. Dr. Schlesinger and Mr. Bostock contributed papers to the Conference.
