Who wants coffee? Well Starbucks can

help! Crawfordsville will soon be home

to the world famous franchise- Star-

bucks! Most of Crawfordsville has been

wanting the thriving franchise to arrive

for quite a while. We may already have

one remarkable coffee shop (the Joshua

Cup), but Starbucks has a drive-thru to

offer. Rick Hernandez, a member of the

Chamber of Commerce, shared in an

over the phone interview what he knows

about the new store. He explained that

when we have such a popular franchise

coming into a town that people will start

to recognize our town as a growing city

rather than a small community. If we want to attract young peo-

ple and have young adults want to stay in Crawfordsville, then we

should have these modern places to attract them. If we don’t have

young adults wanting to stay in Crawfordsville, then our city will

soon be going downhill. Also, having more stores, means more job

opportunities. Unfortunately, due to weather, there is no predict-

able date when the store will be finished.

Downtown party night was a big success for the town of Crawfordsville

Indiana! The people of Crawfordville went out on to the town and had a

great time. Thomas Bowling, a downtown party night goer, mentioned “I

just liked walking around and seeing everyone have a good time.” The

weather that night was chilly, but no snow and rain. Overall there was a

great turnout, and lots of people had a great time. The Joshua Cup gave

out $1 hot chocolate, apple cider, and coffee. Other restaurants offered

foods and drinks at regular prices. Stores and shops stayed open later,

and it gave people a chance to walk around and visit with others. Ac-

cording to Olivia Biddle, “I liked walking up and down the street and

looking at all the shops.” Abbie Lain also shared that, “I liked how Joshua

cup was giving out hot chocolate for a dollar.” Most people were very sat-

isfied with the night, and had fun walking around and enjoying the sales.

The most talked about was the Joshua Cup, ad most were impressed with

the amazing sales. The night wasn’t just fun for the town, but gave all the

business owners a chance to flaunt their products/items.

On Thanksgiving Day of 2018, many participants

ready to run gathered at the main head of the Sugar

Creek Trail to compete in the 18th annual Thanks-

giving Day Pie Run. The start was located at 2722

Rock River Ridge Road. Runners ran/walked

through the trail and into surrounding areas of the

trail, such as sub-divisions that are around the area.

The fun, family-centered event included a competi-

tive 5k, 2-mile run/walk, and 200-yard Kiddie Run.

Everyone of all ages was encouraged to participate

and have fun in this family-centered event. There

was no time limit for this fun run and all abilities

were encouraged to come out and get some exer-

cise. Many awards were given out during and after

the race. When finishing the race, random competi-

tors were handed tickets for a free pie and or any

other giveaway the volunteers were handing out

that year from their sponsors. Anyone could receive

the pie they were awarded when they finished. A

stand with many pies was by the registration table

where runners could get their pies. Cash prizes

were also awarded to the top 3 male and female

winners of the 5k, $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd,

and $25 for 3rd.

The Crawfordsville Christmas parade

took place December 2, 2018. It was a

wonderful event that brought out the

members of the community.

Here’s a written interview from Nik-

kia Metsker, a member of the march-

ing band which performed.

Overall, how what the parade?

“Cold, windy, exciting, and the music

the band played was amazing. The

cheerleaders did stunts in the air and

I was astonished by everything. “

What was it like to perform?

“It’s was a rush, and a challenge to

march in time and play and instru-

ment. It was also fun seeing a lot of

the people in the crowd cheering us

on. The band also got candy at the

end which is the best part after

marching. “

Favorite part of the entire parade?

“My favorite part was turning the cor-

ner and seeing my family rooting for

me.”

In conclusion, the Christmas parade

was an event that participants and

viewers in Crawfordsville enjoyed.

On May 5, 2018, NASA launched its Mars InSight Landing. The trip to Mars is going to take about seven

months, and InSight’s path of flight is planned to minimize that travel time. The purpose of this mission is

to give Mars its first ever thorough checkup in 4.5 billion years since the red planet formed. Another thing is

to check if the interior of Mars has changed any, and to take vital signs, and the temperature. This will be

the first ever robotic explore to do an in depth study of Mars’ interior (crust, mantel, core) this can tell us

important questions about the rocky formation of the planet. November 26, 2018 was a monumental day. At

2:52:59 p.m. ET InSight landed on Mars as the first ever probe to do it. The landing used a combination of

technologies collected from past Mars probes. As the probe moved through the thin atmosphere of Mars, it

descended with the heat shield first and used a parachute to slow itself down. Retro rockets were used to

have the probe slowly approach the Elysium Planitia on the Martian surface. The Planitia was chosen as the

landing sight of the probe because it needed a place where it could sit still and stay quiet for the entire

length of the mission.

Crawfordsville Middle School has recently opened up Athenian Central. It is located in the school’s cafeteria. This store can be accessed by all students at Crawfordsville Middle school. At the store you can buy school spirit items, school supplies, and even hygiene items using your Athenian bucks or money. The store is run by the leader-ship team in shifts every day during each lunch shift. Only 5 students can be in the store at one time. The store allows the kids to spend the Athenian bucks without them having to go to waste at the end of the year. It also provides the students with things they need that they may not be able to access. Every Friday the store gives out 10 backpacks filled with food from kids who may not get enough at home. They are free and available to anyone who needs it. There are a number of things that are available at the store. You can buy jerseys, spirit shirts, foam fingers, bracelets, and many others. For school supplies there are erasers, folders, binders, and pencils. The spirit items and the school supplies are for a various number of Athenian bucks or money. It also has shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and others things that are free for students to take. The store has been very successful so far. Many kids enjoy com-ing into the store during their lunch shift to look around and buy things. The store is restocked every month with a new theme and new items. For December there’s also a Christmas theme. This store has added a way for students to use their Athenians buck easily and wisely.

and Emily Tucker were the directors of Crawfordsville

Middle Schools’ musical and they said, “that it turned

out just as nicely as they wanted it to.”

Have you ever heard of a clock that can

talk? Well, in Beauty and the Beast Jr., Cogsworth

(played by Hutton Haas) can! Beauty and the

Beast Jr. was presented on November 9th and 10th

by Crawfordsville Middle School. The stars of the

show were Belle, Devan Johnson, and Beast, An-

drew Jones. When a beast is trapped in a castle,

and only true love can save him, Belle’s dad, Mau-

rice, played by James Murphy, is captured by the

beast and Belle stumbles upon the Beast and falls

in love. “I wanted to try a new character, someone

bad instead of the good guy so I went for the

Beast,” said Andrew Jones in an interview. An-

drew Jones also stated in an interview, that

At Crawfordsville Middle School, we have a community service

group called the A-Team. This group is run by CMS teachers

Shannon Hudson and Laurie Vellner . In A-team, there are 52

seventh and eighth grade students. Every year, A-Team does a

variety of community service projects. One of the major projects

the A-team does is the summer coupon challenge. This chal-

lenges the students to get more involved within the community.

In the summer of 2018, seventh grader Ryan Miller won this

challenge with a total of --- points. The A-Team has baked cook-

ies for fireman and policemen, bought clothes at Walmart for

children in need, made blankets for the people in nursing

homes, cleaned up trash from Sugar Creek, volunteered at the

annual school carnival, having three booths, basketball toss,

football toss, sucker poll and button making. They have also

made Christmas ornaments for the tree at the Lew Wallace

Place out of packing peanuts and walnuts, and walked dogs at

the Animal Welfare League.

Mrs. Haas is the media specialist and 6th grade

A&E language arts and reading teacher. This year

will be her 22nd year teaching.

Q: What is your favorite memory at Crawfordsville

Middle School/Tuttle?

A: Probably the very last year we had in the old

building. We did lots of very special things. The

pep rallies were special and more. I was a student

at Tuttle and then began teaching there, so I grew

up in the old building. It was really hard saying

goodbye, but seeing the new building and how well

designed it was, was exciting.

Q: What was your first impression of Tuttle?

A: It was a community. Everybody cared about stu-

dents. All of the adults cared for one another. I

worked at two different schools before Tuttle and

there was no community. It was a special feeling.

Q: How has Crawfordsville Middle School made an

impact on your life?

A: I think that knowing students come first has

helped me to see the world in a different way. It

helped me help people in any situation.

Q: What’s your favorite part about being a teacher

at Crawfordsville Middle School?

A: Being a teacher is always changing and each day

is new and exciting. I think knowing that my job

isn’t going to be monotonous or boring each day.

Knowing that each day is a new challenge.

Ms. Belt is an eighth grade science teacher here

at CMS. Although she subbed here as a language

arts teacher last year, this is her first year teach-

ing here. Here are some things about her:

Q: How long have you been teaching?

A: This is my 11th year teaching at public schools.

Q: How have you like CMS so far this year?

A: I like the students and, and I enjoy getting to

know them. I also enjoy doing outdoor labs with

them.

Q: What is your favorite part about teaching?

A: I like using the computers and doing labs with

the students.

Q: What has been your favorite memory from

CMS so far?

A: I enjoyed the advisory service project last

year. My advisory did horse therapy.

Q: What are you looking forward to in the next

years here?

A: I am looking forward to working in the com-

munity to bring in more resources.

The very first holiday of December is Hanukkah, and it starts on

December 2 and ends on December 10. It is celebrated by the Jew-

ish people, and it is also known as Chanukah. It is celebrated with a

nightly menorah lighting, special prayers, and yummy foods. The

most famous holiday of this season is Christmas, and it is on De-

cember 25 and is celebrated for the birth of Jesus. It has evolved

into a worldwide religious and secular celebration, incorporating

many pre-Christian and pagan traditions into the festivities. Usual-

ly people have a big feast to celebrate, ad also there is gift giv-

ing. Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated in Britain, Australia, New

Zealand, Canada, and other Commonwealth countries. Boxing day

originated in England in the middle of the nineteenth century un-

der Queen Victoria. It was traditionally a day off for servants and

the day when they received a 'Christmas Box' from their master.

The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give 'Christmas

Boxes' to their families. Last but not least is happy New Year. New

Year Day is celebrated on January 1. It is the very first day of the

Some students may say that late start Wednesday is very important. The late start Wednesday helps you get more sleep, and less

time at school. Some students may disagree about the importance of having a late start Wednesday. Some students believe it

messes up the bus schedule, and is confusing for parents and students to know when school starts and when the tardy bell is.

Let’s look at a different perspective . Let’s look at a teacher’s and administrator’s point of view; they might think late

start Wednesdays are important. Pretend you were a teacher for a moment, and where would you find time to have a meeting?

That’s right, because in the morning, you need to plan things and discuss things with other teachers. But some teachers might

think to themselves that the late start Wednesdays are a pain, they are so confusing, so why don’t we have a meeting after

school? It’s a great point.

If you had meetings after school then you would have to worry about all the after school activities such as after the bell,

sports practices, and games. So some people think it is better off being in the morning.

So what do you think about late starts?
