Elizabeth Haro February 7, 2012 Period:1 Mr.Meza ‘’Traditional Asmat Essay’’ The Asmat are very interesting because they are traditional, amazing sculptures of people and other kinds of arts, and the Fumeripits made people from trees. The Asmat are traditional because they haven’t change their life style. They still hunt in the forest and sometimes they don’t dress with clothing and other people do. The Asmat are indigenous hunter gatherer culture in the West Papua, Indonesia. Tha Asmat are one of the last hunter gather culture in the world. They are traditional for there piercing on their faces. One of their piercing that i seen that is pretty big is that their tips of their noses. Also they are also know as painting their faces and bodies at wars and ceremonies. The Asmat have amazing sculptures of people and other kinds of arts. Fumeripits created a drum made out of a tree and the lid was made out of lizard skin. He also created sculpture form as man because if he was lonely he wanted company and he created them and would dance along with them while playing his drum. The Asmat have an amazing creation of art because they paint their bodies which is traditional for their culture. Also they have piercing at the faces and bodies, and they like to create new things. The Fumeripits made people from trees. They say that Fumeripits was the first being to exist on earth , and he would created the first men’s ceremonial house called jeu. That Fumeripits would dance at the beach alone , and after awhile he got tired of being alone. So one day he started to chopped down trees, and carving them into human figures and he would place them on the ceremonial house called jeu. Then, he created a drum made out of tree and he craved it and for the lid he used a piece of lizard skin. He began to play the drum and then the sculptures began come alive and they began to start dancing. That how the Fumeripits made people from trees and the first people were the Asmat. The Asmat are traditional and they are the first people and also they Asmat are the last hunter gathers cultures in the world. Thats why the Asmat are very interesting because they are traditional, amazing sculptures of people and other kinds of art, and the Fumeripits made the people from trees.
