InTroduCTIon
To My Fellow Classmates,
Four years ago, we met each other as nervous, eager to impress, first year medical students. We were introduced to one another during one week of orientation, where initial bonds were formed. Then, we hit the ground running on that first day of phase A. Six weeks later, we celebrated with one another after our first exam, whether we passed it or not. For two years, we were all book worms studying in the library until 6 pm and then in our group classrooms until all hours of the night. We bonded over popcorn and recorded Histology lectures, as well as the nights we could enjoy each other’s company after our stressful exams. We stressed out together, and probably stressed each other out dur-ing step 1 study, and then began our clinicals in year three. Another journey awaited us as we studied for shelf exams, entered the hospital at 4 AM, and left sometimes at 7 PM. All of us have thought about what kind of doctor we each wanted to become, and whether or not we had what it took to enter the residency of our choice.
Over the years, we all volunteered in our communities, attended interest group meetings, traveled on mission trips, or did summer scholar research projects. After four years, we know each other very well. We know where each of us pre-fers to study. We know where each of us enjoy spending our weekends, and with whom we are close. We even know about the struggles of some of our classmates, and not only know about them, but care enough to help each other when needed. This includes special tutoring in hard subjects, sharing notes, or even explaining material to make sure our classmate is not left behind. This means comforting one another during the death of a family member, sharing joy with one another over an engagement or wedding, providing support to those who are parents or expecting parents, as well as helping take care of our pets when one may be out of town. Over the years, we have lost fellow classmates who fell behind. However, we will never forget who was with us initially when we began our med school journey.
Whichever campus you may be a part of, we can all relate to this message, because we are the students of Mercer. Our cities and campus lives may be distinct, but our curriculum and goals stay one in the same. We are all from Georgia, or at least have ties to this great state, and have all experienced community medicine with a doctor in a rural/underserved community, which has influenced each of us differently. We all know what it is like to take 8 hour standardized tests, clinical skills OSKEs, and wait patiently and nervously to open that Match Day letter.
These past four years have been difficult, but they were doable, and WE DID IT! We did it together, with the support of one another, and with determination. As your editor, I hope you enjoy your senior yearbook. I hope the photos con-tained in these pages are memories you will hold for a lifetime. I wish the best for each and every one of you, whether we are close or not. I hope our Alumni Association is strong, and that we can have a 10 year reunion after we are all finished with residency. By that time, we will be real, certified physicians. Can you imagine?
To my Savannah classmates, thank you for making these past four years enjoyable, fun, and unforgettable. I would not have been able to survive without the wonderful comradery we developed and shared with one another over the years. I know in my heart that all of you will be great successes, and I am proud to call you my colleagues.
Good luck to all of you, in residency and beyond.
Love Always,Christina Leigh Huntley NogueraClass of 2014 Asklepiad Editor

Gail ColemanOctober 10, 1969 - February 27, 2014
M.D. Class of 2014 Honoree
No one has been accepted into medical school without communicating with Gail Coleman. Gail served Mercer University SOM for over 14 years with many years serving as the Senior Admissions Specialist helping applicants navigate through the maze of medical school admissions. Every student in every program at the School of Medicine has been touched by Gail’s compassion and concern and they have been the recipient of her many hours of labor on their behalf. There is no more fitting person to which this yearbook should be dedicated than Gail Coleman. Her quiet and gentle spirit will be missed and we are all the better for having known her.

About the Mercer University School of Medicine:Mercer University’s School of Medicine was established in 1982 to educate physicians and health professionals to meet the primary care and health care needs of rural and medically underserved areas of Georgia. Today, more than 60 percent of graduates currently practice in the state of Georgia, and of those, more than 80 percent are practicing in rural or medically underserved areas of Georgia. Mercer medical students benefit from a problem-based medical education program that provides early patient care experiences. Such an academic environment fosters the early development of clinical problem-solving and instills in each student an awareness of the place of the basic medical sciences in medical practice. The School opened a full four-year campus in Savannah in 2008 at Me-morial University Medical Center. In 2012, the School began offering clinical education for third- and fourth-year medical students in Columbus. Following their second year, students participate in core clinical clerkships at the School’s primary teaching hospitals: The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon; Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah; and The Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. The School also offers master’s degrees in family therapy, preclinical sciences and biomedical sciences and a Ph.D. in clinical medical psychology.
For more information, contact the Office of Admissions at [email protected] or 478-301-5425.

In 1985, God gave us a gift, a little 5 pound baby girl. We named her Christina Leigh. She was so special and very smart. She was saying words at 5 months old and has not stopped since that time…
Christina Leigh was blessed with people who loved her, her mother, father, sister, brother, aunts, uncles, and friends. She is still loved by thousands of family and friends because she has a big heart and cares for everyone.
During the years, Christina Leigh loved to read and study. We used to go to the library on Saturday, where she checked out the maximum of 10 books. She had all of them read by Sunday and would ask when we could check out more books.
Christina Leigh is very smart, and we are very proud of her. She is the first medical doctor in our family, and we are blessed that she is our special child.
Congratulations to our beautiful and smart Christina Leigh Huntley Noguera.
We love you baby girl!
Love, Your Mother, Sue, and all of your family
