From the Publisher

2011 is now well underway and I hope it’s going to be a good one for us all.One of my best Christmas gifts was a telescope from my partner

Matthew. Sadly, as I go to print we have only had one or two clear nights where we havebeen able to get out in the garden and see anything other than clouds! The telescope wasgiven to me as a result of the Astronomy course that I started last September. My interestin the universe started on my first visit to the London Planetarium in Marylebone Road ona school field trip when I was eight years old and it has fascinated me ever since. Thesedays the London Planetarium is based at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich which holdsmany public events throughout the year. As well as planetarium shows there is also anopportunity to gaze at the moon, planets and stars through their telescope, the largest ofits kind in the UK and the seventh largest in the world. If you are interested in visiting theobservatory and planetarium in Greenwich, why not go on to their website,www.nmm.ac.uk, it’s full of interesting facts and you can buy tickets online to theirevents. There are also many astronomical societies dotted around the UK, some of ournearest are Farnham, Guildford, Croydon, Orpington and East Sussex (Bexhill).

I was delighted to be invited by Denbies, once again, to judge their annual Bacchus Awardbut at the time of going to print, the winner is yet to be officially announced, so I shall letyou know more in the next edition.

Abba tribute band ‘Thank you for the music’ is appearing at the Leatherhead Theatre onThursday 24th February and I have a pair of tickets togive away, see page 14 for more details.

Andy Newbold is running a competition to find thecutest baby in the district, all the info and entry rulescan be found on page 50.

I received a really nice email from a local resident,Anna Semple, who asked whether she could give us an‘inside view’ of the National Children’s Orchestra and Ithink she has done a really good job of explaining howthe Orchestra works and what’s involved behind thescenes. Anna’s piece is on page 88 and I am sure itwill inspire musical youngsters to join.

Flip Cargill, who organises walks around the MoleValley (see the regular events on what the what’s onpage) has very kindly sent in a two piece article about‘Winter Wellness’ and part one can be found on page36, and it makes for an interest reading.

February is obviously the month for all the ‘loved up’amongst us to buy cards/flowers/meals for our lovedones, so best we crack on. Does that sound toocynical? Have a ’love’ly month.

Tatty bye.

Now that the snow seems to have gone, twothings have struck me driving around theAshtead area recently. The weather has takena heavy toll on our roads, creating more anddeeper potholes than ever, and the drains inmany places around the Village are once againstruggling to handle even modest rainfall.

These problems are not new. Unlike theunusually heavy and prolonged snowfall wehave experienced in the last year or two, weknow that it is going to rain and we know thatwithout adequate maintenance our roads anddrains will deteriorate.

Close to where I live there are two spotswhere the drains simply do not work andponds form every time it rains, causing ahazard for pedestrians and road users. Thereare at least two other parts of the Villagewith similar problems or worse. These have allbeen reported to Surrey County Council uponnumerous occasions over a protracted period.Action has been lamentably slow andineffective.

“Disgraceful!” “Somebody should dosomething about it!” “Why do we payCouncil Tax?” are understandable reactionsin my opinion.

So what can be done? In the short term theanswer seems to be “not much”. SurreyCounty Council has primary responsibility forthese services, although some drainage issuesare complicated by responsibility being sharedwith Thames Water. Similar problems arewidespread throughout Surrey, the budgetallocated to Highways has been woefullyinadequate for many years and is now beingcut yet again.

Surrey operates a system of recordingproblems (euphemistically referred to as “wetspots”) and prioritizing their resolution.Action is therefore dependent upon problemsbeing reported, analysed, allocated a priorityand funds being available. As a result of lackof funds many known problems have been

listed but no action taken or planned. Noweven fewer of the identified priority tasks canbe tackled as a result of further budget cuts.

Individual County Councillors can help toensure that cases are identified and givenappropriate priority and they have modestfunds to deploy at their individual discretion. An example of how this can work effectivelyis the remedial work completed in Overdale.Overall however individual Councillors havelimited power to act.

It seems to me that for many years therehas been a major hidden problem which isneither widely understood nor subject topublic scrutiny at either national or locallevel. Unless this changes, we must expectfurther steady deterioration for theforeseeable future, whatever the politiciansmay say.

Could Surrey have deployed its resourcesmore effectively in the past? I think so but weare where we are and that is not thefundamental issue. The time for effectivecorrective action cannot be now, given thepoor state of public finances. Perhaps this ishowever the ideal time for a fundamental re-think of the quality of infrastructure weexpect in the future and what we areprepared to pay.

In the meantime, as an Association we willcontinue to report problems and monitorplanned actions. If you have a “wet spot”near to where you live, please let us know.

Unfortunately I do not expect the ponds whichfrequently appear near to my home todisappear any time soon. Looking on thebright side however, perhaps they worktogether with the numerous potholes as aninexpensive “traffic calming measure”. I amalso looking forward to the arrival of ducks!

About fifteen years ago I was shown roundSeeability. This tour included the paddedrooms where the most desperate inmateswere housed. These poor souls were totallyblind and deaf, so that communication withthem was almost impossible. They wereintelligent souls but totally imprisoned withintheir own bodies. But what shocked me mostof all was that their care was entirely paid forby charity. So why could the NHS not coverthe care costs? Indeed how far should wetake the idea of voluntary giving as againststate funding?

Living in a typical residential road, I haveusually cleared the snow outside my frontfence – not this year as I was in Australiawhen the snow fell! Together with mynextdoor neighbour we take it in turns to cutthe grass verge. But many people considerthat they pay the Council to maintain theroads, and verge cutting is theirresponsibility.

So what is the Big Society? Is it just a schemeto use unpaid volunteers instead of councilemployees for community services? Or is it anopportunity for us to come to together for theimprovement of our neighbourhood?

The Residents’ Associations are about to meetwith MVDC officers to discuss how we mightwork together in the delivery of servicesunder the expanded authority of the Council.

In some respects this is an extension of someof the Council’s services such as Dial-a-Ridewhich uses volunteer drivers. But perhaps weshould think of it as working together to helpour neighbours improve the environment inwhich we live.

Following the ‘Health Checks’ which involveda small number of volunteers, theLeatherhead Area Partnership Ltd. wasestablished to turn ideas into reality. As alimited company this organisation was able toaccess funds which were not available toCouncils. Without listing the successes andproblems of the company, it is still there as avehicle for the betterment of the Town andits environs. There is therefore anopportunity to realise community schemes inwhich our local residents can participate withlocal businesses, under the authority of thecouncil (whose powers are to be enhanced byCentral Government) to make our Town abetter place to live and to do business.

It follows that the Residents’ Associationsshould have a full role to play in representingand co-ordinating the wishes of those who livein and around the Town. By working togetherwe can do more for those who need a helpinghand.

A Tale of Three DeerThis time of year, with the nights drawing in, is always a busy timefor the staff and volunteers at Wildlife Aid. But one night a fewweeks ago the Leatherhead-based animal charity was under evenmore pressure than usual, as, within the space of a few hours, therewere three separate incidents involving deer - all road trafficaccidents - that required the Wildlife Aid rescue and rehabilitationservice.

Wildlife Aid founder Simon Cowell MBEhopes that people driving home in the late afternoon and earlyevening will keep an eye open for wildlife and will takeparticular care not to kill or injure any wild animals on theroad. "Surrey's roads can be death-traps for animals and peoplealike, and I would hope that motorists will take extra care whendriving at dusk, when visibility is not good. It's not just theanimals' lives that are at risk but people too, as a collision witha large animal such as a deer can sometimes cause a very majoraccident. Please, please keep within the speed limits on ruralroads, and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife coming onto theroad."

If you are unlucky and are involved in a roadaccident involving a wild animal, please call theWildlife Aid emergency helpline on 09061 800 132.

It’s the new idea- the Big Society - communities being empowered to influence policyand practice, local decision making, running their own show.

Surrey Hills Onward Learning is an independent charity providing adult educationservices in Leatherhead and Dorking. In the spirit of the times, we are seeking to findout what local residents would like us to offer.

We hear what our thousand current learners are telling us, but we would also like tohear from other local people who might be interested in joining a class if the subject, time, place, and price are right.

We are now starting to plan our programme for next year. Among courses we havebeen asked to include are more GCSEs, a wider range of modern foreign languages, andmore of our very popular gardening and history courses.

But please let us know if there is something you would like us toarrange. We do aim to meet local demand. The rule is thatwhen ten or twelve are gathered together we do grant theirrequest.

For further information on our classes, please phone01372 363708, collect a brochure from the LetherheadInstitute or local libraries, or visit our websitewww.surreyhillsonwardlearning.org.uk

The Youth Centre continues to be busy thoughthankfully it is less hectic over the wintermonths. We have our regular sessions running inthe centre and in local schools plus support forindividual young people. We have recently had quite a large group ofyoung people get to 18 years old, and althoughwe miss having people around (we build a verystrong bond with people over the years) – we dohave to let them go and encourage them to findother things to do. Everyone that moves onknows that if they ever really need us we arestill here for them, and many do pop in fromtime to time to keep in touch. Some haveshowed an interest in helping us by becomingvolunteers.

We are currently planning for the next year, wehave the full Duke of Edinburgh’s Awardreturning to the Centre led by Gary Nash (ACCTWorker), and we have already secured fundingfor the Karting and part funding for the SummerAdventure Week which are both very popularopportunities.

The next twelve months will be interesting asSurrey County Council is changing the way itruns its Youth Centres which are likely tobecome more locally managed. The devil is inthe detail which we have not yet seen, but I amconfident that we have considerable support inthe community from young people, parents,Councillor Chris Townsend, Ashtead ChurchesCommunity Trust, Ashtead Rotary and theResidents’ Association to name but a few, andbetween us I think we can make sure that thecentre will continue to thrive, maintain theconsistency we have delivered over the yearsand remain a reliable service that challenges, nurtures, and develops the potential ofAshtead’s young people.

What members think aboutlife at the Youth Centre“My name is Louise Hickmott, I am 16 years oldand I have been coming to the Youth Centre forabout a year.

I was very lucky to be one of the group whotook part in the Teaching Trip to India this

summer which I thought was an amazingexperience of many highs and a few lows. The highs included meeting and working withthe local children in their school and in anorphanage. Children have much in commonwherever you go, but what really struck us washow they make so much out of so little. Anotherfun memory was on one of our few days offwhere we found a karaoke place and let offsteam by singing terrible tunes late into thenight.

The lows included many of us getting pretty illat some point – the legendary “delhi belly” andsheer exhaustion, I also had a brief visit to thelocal hospital after slipping over and bruisingmy back.

Something that has really stuck with me wasthe inequality between men and women there,it became clear that in some places men wereseen as more important. This was particularlythe case when we visited a women’s shelter andtalked with the ladies that run it. Theyexplained that many of the women who endedup there had been assaulted and then notbelieved and outcast by their families andcommunities, they had to stay at the shelter tohave their babies and were then helped tomake a living and look after their children.

In our country you have a pretty good chance ofjustice, the people we spoke to have very littlechance of any justice at all.”

Ruth had been suspicious for a couple of weeks. The signs were all too evident. Theimprovement in personal hygiene and lingeringaroma of aftershave gave him away. The coverttext messages and rising blushes were conclusiveproof. Should she confront him, subtly questionhim or ignore the signs completely? She hadnever experienced this before. Her friendsadvised her to ignore it. This wouldn't be thefirst time and her interference would only causeembarrassment. He would tell her if he wantedto. She should simply let it run its course and bethere to pick up the pieces when it was all over.

The battle with her curiosity was overwhelmingand it was a battle Ruth knew she would lose. Her first born child had a girlfriend. How couldshe not say something?Ruth discovered the name by accident. She wasin Ben's room and decided to 'dust' his desk. Itwas a perfectly justifiable act as there was adefinite film of grime over the surface. As sheflicked the duster around, she happened to flickover a pad of paper. One word was written inthe corner. 'Elizabeth'. This was her first clue.

Her next objective was easy. In September, theschool sent contact details for the year group.Ruth went through the names, narrowing downher search to 'Elizabeths', 'Beths', 'Lizzies' and'Libbys'. There were six on the list.

Her next objective would take guile andstrategy. She would cross examine any possiblewitnesses. Daniel and Sarah might have seensomething but she had to tread carefully as anyfalse move could prove disastrous. When Benwas out at football training, she idly droppedhints into the conversation but her younger twochildren just gave her a bored look when shementioned Valentine's Day and ignored hersubtle references to 'special friends'. Daniel'sonly response was to put his finger down histhroat and pretend to throw up.

She would have to take direct action. Shewaited until Ben was on his own and casuallymentioned that she would be going into Epsomat the weekend to buy a Valentine card for Sam.Did Ben want to come with her to do someshopping? The response was negative. She had a passing acquaintance with threemothers of 'Elizabeths' on the contact list andrang each one for a 'chat'. She subtly tried toascertain the level of friendship between herson and their daughters but all she gained fromthe conversations were three dates in her diaryto 'get together for coffee'. She didn't know theremaining three mothers on the list and couldn't

invent even a flimsy excuse to call. At least hershortlist was down to three.

On Valentine's Day, Ruth and Sam exchangedcards as usual. When the post arrived there wasa red envelope, addressed to Ben. Ruth wasovercome with excitement. She took it up to hisroom and leaned the card against his computer. He couldn't miss it there. This Elizabeth girl wasdefinitely keen on him. She desperately hopedhe had reciprocated. She couldn't bear thethought of a heartbroken girl waiting for a cardfrom her insensitive son. She had a suddenflashback to herself as a thirteen year old, clinging to the misguided hope that theValentine card from Harry Field had simply beendelayed in the post.

That evening, she didn't say a word. Ben wentto his room and came down for tea as usual.Nothing was said. No acknowledgement wasmade.Ruth couldn't bear it any longer and followedhim up to his room. "Was the card fromElizabeth?" She asked casually.

He was genuinely taken aback. "Elizabeth?Who's Elizabeth?"

"Darling, it's alright. I do know... Mothers havea sixth sense about these things..."

"What planet are you on Mum? Who the hell isElizabeth?"

"Elizabeth is your girlfriend isn't she? It's fine.I'm very happy for you. Was it a nice card?""Mum, my girlfriend is called Becky. Becky sentme a Valentine. Before you ask, I sent her onetoo and yes, we have kissed and yes, I like her!Can we shut up about it now!"

"Of course, darling, I'm sorry. I didn't want toinvade your privacy."

"Who the hell is Elizabeth?" He asked again.

"I saw it on your notepad. I wasn't snooping, Ipromise..."

Ben looked at the pad on his desk and burst outlaughing. "That's classic, Mum... Those are myEnglish notes. We're doing 'Pride and Prejudice'.Did you really think I was going out withElizabeth Bennett?!"

Resident Imprisoned for Unpaid Council TaxIn December at Redhill Magistrates’ Court Mr David Bark of Chart Lane in Dorking was foundguilty of the offence of failing to pay council tax and additional costs totalling £2,518.09 to MoleValley District Council (MVDC).

In accordance with the relevant legislation, MVDC sent Mr Bark bills, reminders, final notices, summonses and an attachment of earnings order, the failure of which resulted in visits from thebailiff. In addition to these formal notices and actions Mr Bark received numerous other lettersand went to the Council offices on a number of occasions to speak with officers to discuss thematter.

As Mr Bark still refused to pay his council tax, as a last resort MVDC issued a committal summonsfor him to attend court. As he ignored this, a warrant of arrest was issued. Mr Bark appearedbefore District Judge Hine and was found guilty of “wilful refusal” to pay the money he owed. The judge sentenced him to 28 days in prison.

Councillor Ben Tatham, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Assets, said: “Mole Valley DistrictCouncil only takes committal action such as this as a last resort. If council tax is not paid, we willtake all available steps to recover the money due. Unpaid council tax ultimately results in higherbills for all those who do pay; therefore the Council will always make every effort to ensure thatoutstanding debts are paid in full.

“The Council is committed to providing the bestservice possible to residents. In cases such asthis, where our ability to fulfil this commitmentis compromised, we will always take action.”

Since my last episode in ‘The Local’ four and ahalf years have passed in my story. I have justmade my exit from a test trip as an InstrumentRepairer in a Dakota aircraft in the RAF atCawnpore in India. A message was waiting forme that I was detailed for demobilisation underClass B. This was early release for those mosturgently needed back in civvy street. The greatmajority of servicemen were desperatelyimpatient to get back home.

The plumbing world was astonishingly changing, with the introduction of copper and plastic fordomestic water pipes. As a consequence impetuswas given to the installation of central heating inordinary homes. Initially the idea of hot waterpipes had been used for churches and publichalls and then a few large houses in the later yearsof the 19th and early 20th centuries. Then in ashort period of time after the Second WorldWar there was a sudden awareness of theopportunity of central heating in the homes of alarge proportion of home owners. The smallbore system was one of the vital innovations inhome heating which enables a smaller amount ofwater to do the job more quickly by beingpumped around the system.

There was lively competition for the choice offuel to fire the boiler at the heart of the system -coal, gas or oil. Potterton had been making castiron boilers for gas for many years for gravity

systems; coal-fired boilers werealso in general use for largesystems; oil was newer tocentral heating but eager tobe involved. Lots ofassociated accessories wereneeded such as pumps, thermostats, radiators, programmers and valves. The

boiler manufacturers were runningtraining courses on installations and calculations. The British Coal Utilisation ResearchAssociation - BCURA - had offices inLeatherhead, and the Coal Utilisation Council -

CUC - were helpful with information. The CUChad a list of accredited installers who were given alapel badge.

In the days after the war, back with the familyfirm, I was looking for the way forward. My daysas an Instrument Repairer in the RAF had taughtme a few useful things about hydraulics, waterpressure, water temperature and electricity andthese thoughts led me to considering theopportunities in the field of central heating.

At that time when Linden House was demolishedand the site was awaiting the development ofLinden Court, a trade fair was held on the vacantsite and one of the stalls was run by BCURA withone of the earliest displays of small bore heating. These two factors, alongside information whichwas becoming available at that time to anyoneinterested spurred me on to have a go in thisinteresting and challenging field. I went onseveral courses which were helpful andinformative, provided by companies such asPotterton (gas) and Watts. I went to Lydney inGloucester where Watts were based and hadarranged a course. They made a range of boilerswhich were fired by anthracite grainsautomatically fed from a hopper in the top of theboiler. In the 1950s our Company wereconverting a large property in Ashtead into fiveflats and we installed a replacement boiler Wattsinto the existing gravity system with somemodifications to serve the five flats.

And so it came to pass that Meredith became theHeating Engineer. There is no space for the restof the story. I did have the satisfaction ofinstalling one of the earliest small bore systems inAshtead and installations fired by gas, oil andcoal. It was an interestingand satisfying occupationand still left me time to fit inthe occasional decoratingjob which I have alwaysenjoyed doing. What next?Meredith Retirement?Who knows...

Polesden painting gets priestly approval

If you thought snow at the endof November was unusual, imagine seeing it fall in Rome inAugust! Apparently that’s whathappened in the year 358, whena snowfall covered the EsquilinoHill in Rome, and what is moreit fell in the shape of a church! That church became the Basilicaof Santa Maria Maggiore, one of

the four main papal basilicas, and one of the city’s major tourist attractions.

The scene, of falling snow in the shape of a church, was captured in a painting now ondisplay at Polesden Lacey. It is thought to be by one of the leading painters of theUmbrian school, Pietro Perugino (c.1450-1523), whose most famous pupil was Raphael.Mrs Greville, owner of Polesden Lacey from 1907 until her death in 1942, was a shrewdand committed art collector and her collection contains many other important workswhich can be viewed when the house is open (Nov – Feb as part of guided weekendtours only).

One Polesden Lacey volunteer, Mr Christopher Bishop, recently contacted theArchpriest of the Basilica informing him of the painting’s location and inviting him tocome and view it.

Club House & Shop c: 1960s

The Course was originally laid out in 1903, at which date the Club was known asthe Surrey Golf Club. The Club House was a conspicuous landmark whenapproached from the south as the main road forks to Esher on the left and toKingston on the right. In 1938 the course underwent considerable alterations.

Before the Second World War the club had a claim to fame asbeing the home course of Alf Perry born 1904. He worked as aclub professional, and won the 1935 Open Championship atMuirfield. He retired from his post at Leatherhead in 1972,and died two years later. Perry was a member of the GreatBritain Ryder Cup team in 1933, 1935 and 1937.

During the Second World War a small part of the course hadtemporarily to be given up when on the 6th September 1940 abomb wrought havoc on the 18th Green and Club House. With the building of the M25 the old club house had to be

demolished and a new one built further in on the course. To this day its ancientoak trees line the fairways whilst the greens which are well guarded and subtlycontoured are regarded as being amongst the best in Surrey.

I can,.. I will.., I have!

Have you ever stopped to think..?

If you were given the opportunity to write your own life story, would itreflect the life you are living?

If not …

What actions could you take that would create a positive change in yourprofessional or personal life? Would you consider....

• changing your job/career?• doing more exercise/losing weight?• becoming more focused and driven?• having more ‘you’ time?• spending more time with loved ones?• anything else...?

Imagine how you would feel after achieving this positive change...Life Coaching works with people who have decided to be the author oftheir own life story. People who have decided to move out of theshadow of ‘if onlys’ and ‘I would if I could’ and into an arena of ‘I can’, ‘Iwill’ and ‘I have’.

Life Coaching will open your eyes wider, make your mind clearer andinstall a belief that will lead you to live the life you have always wanted.

If you always do what you have always done, you willalways get what you have always got.

Mole Valley District Council and SurreyCounty Council have embarked on a series ofambitious projects to further improve localservices available for local people.

As part of the wider Surrey StrategicPartnership, these projects will test howboth councils can best work together withfewer resources, reduce duplication of effortand most importantly deliver services thatlocal people in Mole Valley want and need. Itis intended that what is learnt from theseprojects can be not only be used in MoleValley but will provide positive examples tobe applied elsewhere in Surrey.

There are several projects underway, withsome focussing on services and othersconcentrating on the way the two councilswork together. These projects are:

• looking at how best to use the propertythat both councils own and manage forthe benefit of local people

• looking at how services for young peopleare provided. There are two projects, one focussing on how youth services areprovided and how we can best work withthe voluntary sector to ensure our youngpeople can find the services they need. The second has a focus on how bothcouncils could work better with schoolsto jointly plan for additional servicesthat our schools could provide.

• trying to co-ordinate highway works andstreet cleaning so there is minimaldisruption for all residents and visitors toour area

• looking at how we can co-ordinatefunding received as part of planningapplications to ensure it is spent in themost useful and effective way

• aiming to ensure that the Mole ValleyCommunity Partnership is as effective aspossible in bringing together work fromboth councils for the benefit of MoleValley.

Clare Curran who is a Councillor for MoleValley District Council and for Surrey CountyCouncil, and Chairman of the county

council’s local committee, said: “This is achallenging series of projects but it is rightand proper that as councillors we ensurethat your Council Tax is spent in the mosteffective way. If we can do that by ensuringlocal needs are met and can be better metby both councils pooling resources and effort– this is the right approach for us to take”.

Both councils are keen to hear fromresidents, businesses and organisations inMole Valley how we can further improveeffective delivery of services across thepublic sector – contact us [email protected].

CC rocuses, like Hamlet’s sorrows, come notas single spies, but in battalions. And

stealthy battalions at that. One day, there isno sign of them, while the next they havepopped up everywhere. Anyone who walksacross a public park daily to get to work andsuddenly, one morning, comes across averitable carpet of plump Dutch crocuses, purple and yellow, will know what I mean.

That jack-in-the-box character is onlypart of the fascination that crocuses have tooffer us. For me, their appeal lies as much inthe way they open their petals out when thesun warms them as in their colours. It may bea no-nonsense bio-chemical reaction tosunlight, but it is still reminds me of the way Ifeel like stretching my arms out to enjoy theFebruary sunshine, so it always makes mesmile.

Nor is that all, for the styles (that is,stigmas and stalks inside the flowers) exhibitan intriguing variety of form, depending onthe kind of crocus it is. I really enjoy goinground the garden on a sunny day, peering intocrocus flowers to observe the branching ofthe golden or red styles. In fact, this is oneway that botanists identify different species. The styles of the well-known spring-floweringCrocus chrysanthus, for example, are orange-red and divided into three, while those ofCrocus sieberi are fringed. The styles ofCrocus imperati are so divided that they looklike masses of fine orange threads.

The styles of the autumn-flowering Crocus sativus -believe it or not - provide theculinary spice and yellow dyethat we know as saffron. Itseems remarkable now thatsaffron was oncecommercially grown andharvested in this country;indeed, it was so importantto the prosperity of one partof Essex that there is a townnamed after it – SaffronWalden. It would be nice tothink that such a benign

industry could be resurrected, especiallysince saffron is the most expensive spice youcan buy, but the summers would have to get abit hotter and winters appreciably colderbefore it was viable again. And I rather doubtyou could get people to pick the flowers. Itwould be back-breaking work, which wewould not appreciate; after all, it takes100,000 flowers to make just a kilo of driedculinary saffron and the harvest has to bedone very quickly. Crocus sativus is grown forprofit in central Spain, Iran, Greece andKashmir and has been cultivated for morethan 3,000 years. As well as its culinary use,it is a textile dye and also in the past was alsoused in medicine. Indeed, there is somerecent evidence that it has anti-cancerproperties.

What really tickles me about the crocus isthat it is one of the few plants which cancorrect my shortcomings as a gardener. It hasthe capacity to draw itself down to the rightplace in the soil, using what are called‘contractile’ roots. So even if I get theplanting depth wrong, the crocus ends up inthe right place in the end. Indeed, I reallydon’t see how further evolution could possiblyimprove on the crocus. Except perhaps tomake the bulbs taste unpleasant to mice andsquirrels. Yes, and make the flowers moreweatherproof in February, provided it did notdetract from their unique beauty.

MOLE VALLEY POLICE COLUMN

Every year, we receive reports relating tothieves targeting cars left unattended andparked in beauty spots, of which there aremany across Mole Valley. Police carry outregular patrols at beauty spots and, whenever possible, we speak to vehicleowners and advise them about not leavingany items of valuein their cars. When we do notget to speak withthe vehicle ownerbut can seevaluables clearlyon view, we takethe vehicle detailsand write to theowner to advisethem of ourconcerns. In asingle weekendrecently, officersrecorded detailsof nearly 50vehicles which had been left with valuablesclearly on display and, in some cases; thecars were not even locked!

Normally, this problem tends to occurthroughout the summer months but recentlywe have seen vehicles being targeted overthe winter and into this year. Smalleritems, such as handbags and purses arebeing taken and you can imagine theinconvenience and distress this type of theftcan cause.

A thief can gain entry to a vehicle veryquickly and they know the most commonlyused places where people leave items ofvalue within the vehicle. These include theglove compartment, under the driver’s orpassengers’ seat or on the rear foot well ofvehicles and, of course, in the boot.

The more rural parts of our county can alsopresent easy opportunities to would bethieves, particularly if vehicles are parked inmore remote locations where they cannoteasily be seen by their owners or passers by.

We would always advise people to take any

items of value with them when leaving theircar unattended. Also, before your journeyit is worth considering if you actually needall the items that you normally keep in yourcar (laptop, camera, expensive tools etc). It’s worth considering leaving the glovecompartment open and the boot shelf

removed, to showclearly thatnothing of value isin the car. Thismay well helpprevent yourvehicle from beingtargeted.

When choosing aparking space, tryto park in the mostopenly visiblelocation and nottucked away out ofeasy view. It isthese locations

that will enable a thief to try car doors oreven break in with less chance of being seenwhilst doing so.

A locked vehicle may not prevent it beingtargeted but an opportunist thief willnormally pick a vehicle that is unlocked andwhen items of value are on view. Pleasedon’t make it easy for thieves.

Mole Valley Police - Local Staff MovesI would like to let you know that there will be some staff moves within the Mole Valley SaferNeighbourhood Team in the New Year. Continuity is very important and the officers movinghave all been in their posts for several years. I have to balance continuity with individualofficers wishes to develop either by taking on the challenges of a new area or towardspromotion. I feel it is important to explain that these moves are not management led but aretaking place in order that I can retain all three officers who are, in my view excellent NSOs andassests to Mole Valley whilst satisfying some of their needs in relation to career development.

PC 2188 Chris Lewis will be moving to the Leatherhead town to work alongside PC 2056Gaynor Grout.

PC 2175 Jason Woods will be moving to cover the Goodwyns, Chartdowns and North Holmwoodarea.

PC 3239 Fran Davey will be moving to Ashtead

There will be handover periods, the officers are already attending adhoc key meetings on theirnew areas and Fran will work alongside Jason and then Jason alongside Chris for one month.

It is anticipated that the moves will be completed by March 2011.

My life changed with an audition in 2007 atAshtead Memorial Hall (until recently therehearsal venue for the South-easterliesregional orchestra) for the NationalChildren’s Orchestra (NCO). Then I wasnine and the viola was a hobby, now I amthirteen and the viola is the centre ofmuch of my life.

The NCO was founded by Vivienne Price, who went to school at Roseberry, in 1978.It gives children aged 7-13 the chance tocreate breathtaking music at residentialcourses and at optional regionalrehearsals. Due to its enormous size, theNCO is split into five age-bandedorchestras: the Training (7-10), Under 11and Under 12 orchestras meet for an eight-day summer course, ending with a concertfor family and friends; and the Under 13and Main orchestras meet for two nine-daycourses in spring and summer, finishingwith a public concert at fantastic venueslike Birmingham Symphony Hall and theBrighton Dome; as well as a non-residential course in London with a publicwinter concert normally held at SouthbankCentre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.

I consider myself a conventional teenager –I like to go out with friends, go on thecomputer and watch TV, but ever sincegaining a place in Training Orchestra, theNCO has formed part of my life that Icould not live without. I have made some

of my best friends, had some of themost memorabletimes and playedsome of thegreatest music.I’m ecstatic to bepart of the 2011Main orchestra.

The NCO has givenme, along withhundreds of otherchildren, unforgettableopportunities. Last year I was chosen toplay as part of the NCO’s Sinfonietta at theFoundling Museum, London; and just lastDecember I played at the Big Give CharityBall, helping raise £40,000 for NCO whichwas then doubled!

At thirteen, this is my last year with theNCO. I hope through writing this, I haveshown how wonderful the organisation isand what it offers to each and every childwho successfully auditions and even thosewho are unsuccessful, and how theorchestra is a priceless and precious partof our lives and deserves to be well-knownall over the country.

Waste not, want not; Haste makes waste; Wilful waste brings woeful want; Thewaste of plenty is the resource of scarcity. Are these quotes familiar? They havebeen around for ages but they are beginning to take on a new meaning as weget to grips with using the worlds resources in a more sustainable manner. Welive in a finite world of finite resources and there are a lot of us (6 billion andlive in a finite world of finite resources and there are a lot of us (6 billion andrising…) so we need to do a bit if global budgeting of life’s necessities - thingslike water, food, energy, minerals. Share around what there is on the planet and

not waste what we’ve got. It’s as easy as ABC really – the new 3 Rs - reduce, reuseand recycle.

Reduce This is the greenest option - just cut down a bit on buying stuff. Do you need toreplace the car/fridge/carpet/mobile NOW? What would happen if you postponed it for afew weeks or months? Or didn’t replace it till it stopped working? I’ve noticed that the buzzof having something new is very temporary but the cost to the global budget lasts a lotlonger…How about sharing tools and household items rather than buying your own – doesevery household need it’s own hedge-trimmer/step ladder/wood-chipper/ DIY gizmo? Couldyou set up a Tool Pool?

Reuse is less green than reducing but is recycling’s greener sibling –re-using means using something in it’s current form without breakingit down into raw materials and starting again; for example, sendingclothes to a charity shop, buying clothes at ditto; sending your oldmobile to be used in the Third World (eg Mazuma Mobile aim to reuseover 95% of the mobile phones received in various developingmarkets where the cost of new mobile phones is sometimesunaffordable. http://www.mazumamobile.com/ …other mobile re-users are available) A staggering 66% of used ink cartridges and inktoners end up swelling the contents of UK landfills, that’s 15 milliontoner and 35 million inkjet cartridges, or 28,000 tonnes of yearlypollution - what a waste! Get them refilled!! Be inventive – use askate board as a planter trolley, use egg boxes as seed trays, userechargeable batteries… And lastly,

Recycling Think about buying things that have easily recycled components – milk in glassbottles from the milkman, maybe; or join a campaign for less useless packaging…If you douse non-rechargeable batteries, make sure they are recycled. The EU Batteries Directiveaims to reduce the impact on the environment of the manufacture, distribution, use, disposal and recovery of batteries - it sets portable battery collection targets of 25% by2012 rising to 45% by September 2016. (Good for the EU, not all their directives are crazy!!)With a little imagination, improving your grasp of the 3 Rs is as easy as ABC…let’s do ittogether!

To a Mountain in TibetColin Thubron £16.99

A new book of travel writing fromthe author of “Shadow of the SilkRoad”. Mount Kailas is the mostsacred of the world’s mountains –holy to one fifth of humanity.Isolated beyond the centralHimalayas, it is claimed by mythto be the source of the universecreated from cosmic waters andthe mind of Brahma. For centuriesthe mountain has been rituallycircled by Hindu and Buddhist

pilgrims.Colin Thubron joins them, after anarduous trek from Nepal, through the high passesof Tibet, to the magical lakes beneath the slopesof Kailas itself. He talks to secluded villagers andto monks in their decaying monasteries; he tellsthe stories of exiles and of eccentric explorersfrom the West. Yet there is another dimension inthis book. Colin Thubron recently witnessed thedeath of the last of his family. He is on apilgrimage of his own. His trek around the greatmountain wakens an inner landscape of solitude, love and grief, restoring precious fragments of hisown origins.

Trapped in an impossible, maybe unwinnable game, can they avoid thewhispers and watchful eyes of those who will sayor do anything to save themselves? The Betrayal isa powerful and touching novel of ordinary peoplein the grip of a terrible and sinister regime, and amoving portrait of a love that will not beextinguished.
