Spitting mad! Photographer lucky to be alive after deadly cobra squirts lethal venom at him after taking exception to his camera A photographer is lucky to be alive after a deadly cobra took offence to his camera - and started squirting lethal poison at him. Riaan Nysschens was at a safari lodge in South Africa when he managed to

picture the snake spitting deadly venom through the air - even though the liquid could have easily killed him. The photographic guide grabbed his camera after spotting one of the country's most dangerous creatures, the Mozambique Spitting Cobra, at the property. The snake was caught hiding in the Mafigeni Safari Lodge - but

Mr Nysschens managed to move it to safety before capturing these amazing shots. He said: 'Our lodge is completely open with no doors and small snakes will often come through the lodge.

In Uganda, a white German aid worker becomes an unlikely local pop star Student Deena Herr, 22, has recently become a very unlikely superstar in the African nation of Uganda. Above,

her East African radio chart-topper, “Mumulete,” sung pretty much flawlessly in one of Uganda's native languages, the Bantu dialect known as Luganda. After graduating college, she tells Der Spiegel, she worked for a year in an aid center for street children in Rwanda, then traveled all over East Africa. She ended up in Kampala, a city she says she “fell in love with instantly.” One evening in a local Kampala bar, a friend who knew she had a good voice suggested she play

something on the guitar and sing. She did. One thing led to another, and soon she had a local manager, a video in which she sings a ballad in a local language, and is celebrated on the radio and in local culture as a pop star.

Measles Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo Kills 400 More than 23,000 people, mostly children, have been infected with measles in the Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than 400 have died, according to United Nations agencies and Doctors Without Borders. In one village of 500, more than 30 children under age 5 died within two months — a third of all the children in that age group. “Their little graves are still visible in the cemetery,” said Augustin Ngoyi, the response coordinator for Doctors Without Borders. New Ebola death reported in Sierra Leone district that went nearly 6 months with no infections FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) — Sierra Leone on Monday announced a new Ebola death in a northern district that had gone nearly six months without reporting any infections. The announcement marked another setback in ending Ebola transmission in Sierra Leone, which has totaled nearly 4,000 Ebola deaths during the worst outbreak ever recorded.

In August, Sierra Leone's last known Ebola patient was released from a hospital after recovering, a milestone that allowed the West African nation to begin a 42-day countdown toward being declared free of Ebola transmission. But less than a week later, officials confirmed that a 67-year-old woman had died of Ebola in the northern Kambia district. The latest fatality is a 16-year-old who died on Sunday in Bombali district, about 150 miles northeast of the capital, Freetown, according to a statement from the National Ebola Response Center issued Monday.

Multiple African Countries Swaziland, Zim are Africa’s most unfree Johannebsurg - Satisfaction with democracy remains elusive, as just 51 percent of citizens surveyed in 28 African countries believed their country was a full democracy, or one with just a few problems, an Afrobarometer survey shows. Angola Worried About Intl. Terrorism in Africa Luanda, Sep 14 (Prensa Latina) The expansion of international terrorism, which got to the African continent in countries like Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad, is a matter of concern to Angola, said Minister of Defense Joao Lourenzo. "For this reason, with the support of the international community, including Italy, Angola will organize next month an international conference on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea," announced Lourenzo in the official talks in the wake of a visit by his Italian counterpart Roberta Pinotti. He recalled that since the independence proclaimed on November 11, 1975, his country went through a situation of conflict until 2002, and now is devoted to consolidate democrascy and economic and social development.

It’s Been Two Months Since Burundi’s Election and People Keep Getting Assassinated It's a dangerous time to be a powerful person in Burundi. On Friday, unidentified gunmen clothed in military fatigues shot and killed at least four people while attempting to assassinate the army's chief of staff on the streets of the capital Bujumbura. Assassins killed an opposition party spokesman in the capital on Monday, and a high-ranking military officer was gunned down in August. …."The concern and the risk of mass atrocity crimes is still high in Burundi and these politically motivated assassinations do nothing more than push the country to the brink," Evan Cinq-Mars, a research analyst at Global Center for the Responsibility to Protect, told VICE News in August. "These things can trigger events that can quickly spiral out of control." The target of Friday's shooting was General Prime Niyongabo, but he survived the attack and is said to be back at work. Three soldiers and a civilian died in the shootout, while two of the assailants were also reportedly killed, the military said during a press conference. Four bodies found in Burundi’s Bujumbura At least 150 people have been killed in Burundi amid ongoing political turbulence that began in April BUJUMBURA, Burundi – Four bodies were found Monday morning in the northern part of Burundian capital Bujumbura, according to a local police official. Deputy police spokesman Stone Nkurikiye told Anadolu Agency that four bodies, which remain unidentified, were found in northern Bujumbura’s Kiyange district. Nkurikiye said the circumstances and motives for the killings were still unknown, adding that an investigation had since been launched with the aim of dentifying the victims and apprehending the culprits. Cameroon officials encourage self-defense groups to respond to Boko Haram attacks in north YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) — Officials in Cameroon's north on Monday praised a local self-defense group for confronting Boko Haram militants during a suicide bombing attack over the weekend, a move they said greatly reduced fatalities. Others in the region should follow suit in the face of a seemingly constant onslaught of attacks from the Nigeria-based extremists, said Far North Region Governor Midjiyawa Bakari. "We are calling on the population to constitute themselves in vigilante groups and be each other's keeper as Boko Haram lives its last days," Bakari said. Northern Cameroon borders Nigeria and has been targeted repeatedly by Boko Haram, including seven attacks in the past five days. On Sunday, suicide bombers hit the town of Kolofata, killing nine civilians and wounding at least 18. But they were prevented from causing further bloodshed when members of a self-defense group in the town blocked them from heading to the market, said Ahmidou Fouman, one of the group's members. "We detected three strange teenage boys and a girl dressed like a Muslim in our town. They pretended to be fetching water from a stream and when some members of our group went to search them, the girl detonated a bomb killing some of us," Fouman said.

Coalition partners warn Congo's Kabila not to cling to power KINSHASA (Reuters) - Leading parties in Democratic Republic of Congo's ruling coalition told President Joseph Kabila on Monday that actions by his allies had given the impression that he intends to violate the constitution by hanging onto power beyond 2016.

Page 5: The ASEA Daily News & Resources please have …...2015/09/15  · her East African radio chart-topper, Mumulete, _ sung pretty much flawlessly in one of Uganda's native languages,

In a letter to Kabila, seen by Reuters, the heads of the so-called G7 parties demanded immediate steps to ensure that the presidential election, scheduled for November 2016, is held on time. If held successfully, the vote would mark the country's first peaceful transition of power. The letter stated that violating the constitution's two-term limit risked destabilizing the vast Central African country where regional wars between 1996 and 2003 killed millions, most from hunger and disease. Opposition parties plan to demonstrate in the capital, Kinshasa, on Tuesday to demand that Kabila, in power since his father's assassination in 2001, step down next year as required by the constitution.

Kenyan albino attack as Tanzania elections approach Nairobi (AFP) - Attackers in Kenya tried to hack off body parts from a man with albinism to sell for witchcraft, reports said Monday, rising fears of cross-border attacks from neighbouring Tanzania. "Three people stormed my house and demanded money," 56-year old Enock Jamenya, from Kenya's western Vihiga district, told the Daily Nation newspaper. "When I told them I had no money, they asked for ear or hand to sell in Tanzania." The attackers sliced his ear, arm, neck and fingers, the newspaper reported, but then were apparently disturbed and fled, leaving Jamenya wounded and unconscious. "One of his sons came in the morning to check on him, he found him lying in a pool of blood," his brother Nixon Muhole told The Standard newspaper. In neighbouring Tanzania, some politicians have been accused of buying albino body parts for witchcraft and lucky charms.

Mozambique opposition boycotts peace talks Maputo (AFP) - Mozambique's main opposition party Renamo on Monday boycotted peace talks with the ruling Frelimo for the second time, raising tensions further in the southern African nation where sporadic clashes between the army and rebel gunmen have resumed. "As long as we do not have clear indications that the government is ready to accept our proposals, discussions are useless," Renamo MP Eduardo Namburete told AFP on Monday.

Al Shabab beheads three youths in Somalia Reports coming from Yiblan, a small town between Somalia’s Lower Shabelle and Hiiran region indicate that the militant group Al Shabab beheaded three youths it accused of being members of the Somali National Army. The armed group, while justifying the execution, said the three young men had caused misery in the area by raping and robbing the locals while serving the army. The locals, however disputed that claim, saying that the beheaded youths were herders. “We know them (the three youths). They were not what they were accused of. They were herders in the area,” a community leader who sought anonymity, said. Since the group sprung up in mid 2007, Al Shabab has been accused of carrying out execution that attracted international uproar.

DA calls on Ramaphosa for answers on Eskom-Gupta deals CAPE TOWN - Media reports on Sunday confirm that parastatal Eskom bent over backwards to ensure that the politically-connected Gupta family were awarded a coal deal worth R4 billion, the Democratic Alliance said. It was incumbent on Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, as head of government’s “war room” on the energy crisis, to provide a full and detailed explanation as to how this occurred under his watch, whether he was informed about the deal, and what role he played in ensuring it was rubber stamped, DA spokeswoman Natasha Mazzone said in a statement. She intended to write to Ramaphosa to ask questions in this regard. “Gupta-owned company – Tegeta Exploration and Resources – astonishingly landed a R4 billion deal to supply Majuba power station in Mpumalanga with coal for the next 10 years, despite having been rejected since 2011 due to their poor standard of coal,” Mazzone said. The company was awarded the deal on its fifth attempt, after failing a coal quality test four times at a cost of R100,000 per test to Eskom. After the deal was concluded, four senior employees were controversially suspended after they questioned the quality of the Gupta coal, she said. Third term for Zuma shot down in flames The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has put a spoke in the party succession wheel with its suggestion that President Jacob Zuma should serve a third term as ANC leader. Just as the jostling within the ANC to replace Zuma at the next conference in December 2017 got hotter, the ANCYL boldly stated that the incumbent should remain at the helm of the party. Even if the ANC wins the next election in 2019, the constitution does not allow Zuma to serve a third term as SA president. New ANCYL president Collen Maine said youth league members were “consistent in that they were in favour of Zuma serving a third term” as ANC president. He made his remarks in an exclusive interview with The Citizen in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, on Thursday night. Yesterday, ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza poured cold water on the third term suggestion. “The ANC has never had such a discussion,” said Khoza. Uganda: Defence Forces Suspend Officers as Somalia Deaths Reach 19 The Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) has suspended four commanders at the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) military base that was attacked on September 1 by al-Shabaab fighters. The suspension, pending a military trial, was ordered by President Museveni; in a radio message to the chief of defence forces (CDF) and all units, as Museveni wondered how al-Shabaab could breach UPDF defences. Army Spokesman Paddy Ankunda confirmed the development on Saturday, telling The Observer: "They were suspended so investigations could start."

Zimbabwe: I Will Push On With Mugabe Indigenisation Drive Says Nephew Zimbabwe's new indigenisation minister has vowed to push on with President Robert Mugabe's controversial programme for black empowerment, state media reported Saturday. Patrick Zhuwao, who is Mugabe's nephew, told the official Herald newspaper: "As you are aware, this ZANU-PF government was elected on a mandate of indigenisation, empowerment and employment creation. "So I believe that it will be my responsibility to ensure that we continue with that programme of indigenisation as articulated by His Excellency [Mugabe]", Zhuwao said. The well-known businessman and farmer said he would "pick up" where his predecessor left off, a reference to Christopher Mushohwe who was named information minister in Friday's cabinet reshuffle. Mushohwe recently signalled a slight softening on indigenisation, which requires all large white and foreign-owned businesses to cede a 51% stake to local black businessmen. Critics and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change believe the policy is scaring off desperately-needed foreign investment, and some in the ruling party share that view.

The US Diplomatic Mission to South Africa has issued a warning that extremists may target American interests in South Africa. According to the embassy's website, they don't know when or where the terrorists are supposed to strike, but their targets may include ' U.S. Government facilities and other facilities identifiable with US business interests.' The embassy is calling on Americans to 'Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.' The US State Department does not appear to have issued a travel warning targeting South Africa at this time. According to the US State Department, "Anti-US violence is not common in South Africa, but the Department of State remains concerned about the continued worldwide threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas."

Burundi's government survived a coup attempt this week that saw fierce fighting between rival army factions. It was the culmination of weeks of violent street protests against the president's bid to seek a third term in the poor east African country. In a statement, the US state department said Burundi was faced a "deteriorating security situation". It said it had ordered all non-emergency US government personnel and dependents of American staff to leave Burundi on Thursday.
