Career Speaker Series Grandview Heights High School continued its Career Speaker Series on Thursday, Jan. 16th. The Career Speaker Series offers students an opportunity to learn about various careers from listening to presentations from local community members. The speakers share information about their careers so students will have a better understanding of different aspects of the career. The series will continue with speakers giving presentations the third Thursday of each month. Thanks to Michelle Wilson and Jessica Khouzam-Walli from the Grandview Chamber of Commerce for their help in planning this event. The careers represented for January were careers in the music industry, an artist, a civil engineer, and entrepreneurship. Dwight Heckelman has over 20 years in the music industry in which he has worked at major recording labels, as a music writer, and in music educational programs. He is the founder of a Columbus music school, GROOVE U. Local artist, Daric Gill also spoke to students about what it takes to make a living as an artist. The owner of Daric Gill studios, and the creator of the Toehead characters, Daric helped students identify how to turn a passion into a career. David Pritchard and Amanda Engle talked with students about their work around the country working with the group Engineers Without Borders. They shared their stories of helping impoverished towns create better infrastructure and how civil engineering has a direct impact on the lives of others. David also discussed the need for civil engineers and the requirements for getting into this field. Submitted by Mr. Thivener SPRING BREAK 2015 IN SOUTHERN SPAIN: Spanish club will begin to organize a Spain trip for Spanish students during spring break of 2015. COLLEGE INFORMATION: FAFSA FORMS FOR COLLEGE-BOUND SENIORS After January 1, 2014, parents of college-bound seniors can begin to fill out the FAFSA form. This is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Completion of this form is necessary if you request federal or state aid. You may apply online at www.fafsa.gov. You will also need a PIN (Personal Identification Number), which will identify you. STUDENTS AND PARENTS MAY APPLY FOR PIN NUMBERS IN ADVANCE OF FILLING OUT THE FAFSA AND IS ACTUALLY A GOOD IDEA TO DO SO AS IT WILL SPEED UP THE APPLICATION PROCESS. Apply for your PIN today at www.pin.ed.gov. The PIN is your electronic signature. PINs can be used for years to come. However, they expire with non-use after 30 months. If you have other children who are applying for student aid, your PIN can be used to sign all their FAFSA forms. Your students can also use their PINs to electronically sign loan promissory notes and view information about grants and loans received and the US Department of Education records. If you have questions about completing the FAFSA, call 1-800-4-FEDAID (1-800-433-3243).
