As we prepare to celebrate Columbus’s 200th birthday, we are looking forward to another century of achievements for our great city. GCAC is beginning a new era as well—one focused on leading the way to stability and growth for arts and culture in Central Ohio.

GCAC is focused on providing the knowledge, advocacy and collaboration that will

enable artists and arts organizations to flourish even more in the future. As the city’s

champion for the arts, GCAC is dedicated to the values of accountability, sustainability,

diversity, creativity, excellence and innovation. And as a steward of the public trust,

GCAC is committed to investing resources in the arts to provide a positive economic

impact for our community and to make our city an exciting place to live, work and visit.

2011 was a year of significant accomplishments. Just a few of the highlights:

• Total grants were up 14.1 percent, with awards to more than 80 arts organizations

and nearly 50 artists. We successfully launched new grant programs, including

professional development and supply grants for artists, as well as a fellowship

program for media artists.

• GCAC also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Columbus Arts Festival and the

launch of 13 new festival initiatives. These new programs will continue with our return

to the Riverfront and the new Scioto Mile in 2012.

• With the support of leadership from the city’s public and private sectors and its arts

and culture community, GCAC is leading the effort to develop a sustainable funding

plan for arts and culture in the coming year.

• Throughout 2011 GCAC worked with a cross-section of community members to plan

the celebrations for 200Columbus, our city’s bicentennial. We are excited about this

yearlong celebration that, among many components, will highlight the richness and

depth of the city’s arts and culture.

We want to thank Mayor Michael B. Coleman, the Columbus City Council, the Franklin

County Commissioners, and all of the businesses and individuals who recognize the

importance of arts and culture to both our quality of life and our economic prosperity.

Together we are creating a vibrant Columbus for today and tomorrow.

PROMOTING ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE AND SUSTAINABILITYFebruary 2012 will bring the Columbus Bicentennial,

and GCAC will play a major role in the celebration. The

past 15 months have seen planning and collaboration

for 200Columbus, an effort that will boost community

pride and promote the image of Columbus as a great

place to live, work and visit.

During 2011, GCAC took a leadership role in identifying

funding solutions that will sustain the arts community—

both short-term and long-term. Along with the City of

Columbus, Franklin County, arts organizations, and

leaders from the private and public sector, we are

working to create an environment where the arts and

cultural community can contribute to our quality of life

for a long time to come.

In 2011, the Greater Columbus Arts Council was once

again presented the Ohio Association of Nonprofit

Organizations coveted Standards of Excellence Award,

which the agency has maintained since 2008.

BUILDING AUDIENCES AND CONNECTING THEM WITH ARTISTS

ColumbusArts.com, a service of GCAC, is a guide to all

cultural events and arts organizations in Central Ohio.

It’s also a hub for more than 500 artists in five disciplines—

visual, music, dance, theatre and literature—which makes

it one of only a few free multidisciplinary directories

in the country. With more than 30,000 site visits each

month, ColumbusArts.com is a vital resource that

strengthens awareness, encourages attendance and

fosters participation in the arts.

GCAC further builds audiences for the arts through

cooperative marketing partnerships. We partner with

CD102.5 through biweekly radio interviews where we

share current arts events and happenings; with the

Columbus Arts Marketing Association; with Columbus

Underground, which hosts our biweekly column

that features an inside look at the Columbus art scene;

with Columbus Young Professionals Club, whose

membership reaches over 12,000 young professionals;

and with WOSU Public Media, which broadcasts

ArtZine to nearly 1.5 million viewers annually.

KNOWLEDGE

To support the governance, leadership, technology

and professional development needs of not-for-profit

arts organizations, BOOST (Broadening Organizations’

Overall Skills and Technology) awards grants to help

these groups build their capacity. Recipients make a

long-term commitment to improve and develop the

skills that not only strengthen their organizations,

but also contribute to the cultural vitality of the

greater community.

13|14

The Columbus community depends on the

contributions of individual artists to the creative

landscape, and GCAC supports these artists through

artist fellowships, international residency and exchange

programs, and professional development assistance

and supply grants. These funding programs enable

artists to refine and broaden their skills while continuing

to create engaging, innovative work. And through a

partnership with the Columbus Bar Association, we

offer pro bono legal assistance for Franklin County

artists and small arts organizations.

Together, these resources continue to make Columbus

and Franklin County a welcoming home for artists to

create their work and bring it to the public, as well as

an attractive location for residents who seek a rich

cultural life.

KNOWLEDGE

INFORMING NEW AUDIENCES ABOUT THE VALUE OF THE ARTSEach month, GCAC’s newsletter Front Row Center

showcases the incredible and exciting diversity of arts

and cultural programming in the city. By covering local

and national arts issues, featuring profiles of area

creative professionals and previewing upcoming events,

the publication gives readers an in-depth look at Central

Ohio’s creative economy. As the public face of our arts

and culture community, Front Row Center delivers our

story to arts constituents throughout the year.

KNOWLEDGE

OPPArt (Opportunities for Artists) sponsors events that

help individual artists connect with one another. The

series includes professional development workshops,

roundtable discussions and social events where artists

learn together, further their work and continue to grow

as artists.

Through our annual public forum, we interact with the

community to share knowledge and resources, as well

as our accomplishments, our plans and the important

work we’re doing on behalf of the arts.

“This year GCAC’s support enabled

us to create a brochure about our

organization, to get our first audit

and to plan handicap accessibility for

our gallery, which is a big step for us.”

set GCAC apart from other arts-

FOSTERING LINES OF COMMUNICATION ABOUT THE ARTSThrough cooperative marketing partnerships, monthly

newsletters, media outreach, and website and Facebook

campaigns, we are constantly promoting artists and arts

organizations. And with our network of nearly 10,000

Facebook fans and Twitter followers, we continue the

conversation about the arts every day.

cultural institutions. The Festival drew an

inquisitive and new audience for the area.”

CLEVE RICKSECKER, DISCOVERY SPECIAL IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

To continue to maintain the vibrancy of the arts in

Central Ohio, we are actively bringing together entities

from a broad cross-section of the community to share

resources, expertise and perspectives.

When distributing grants to artists and arts organizations,

we have a process of annual meetings with recipients to

provide useful feedback on administrative– and project-

based questions from grantees.

With the support of the

Columbus Federation of Settlements, the Art in the House initiative and TRANSIT ARTS enables children to interact with

the arts during out-of-school hours.

Artist fellowships are made available via partnerships with the

The National Endowment for the Arts is making the Public Art

2012 program possible.

A panel discussion called A Way Forward: Arts and

Economic Development, which featured Les Wexner,

Mayor Coleman, Doug Kridler and NEA Chair Rocco

Landesman, was the result of a partnership with the

Columbus Foundation and the Columbus Partnership.

It brought together civic, business and philanthropic

leaders for a provocative conversation on the value of

the creative sector in building attractive and competitive

cities. The tremendous turnout was a true testament to

the passion of our city’s creative sector for making the

arts a priority as we plan for the future of Columbus.

COLLABORATION

SHARING ART WITH THE COMMUNITY THAT MAKES IT POSSIBLEEvery summer, GCAC is proud to bring the Columbus

Arts Festival to the city, a three-day celebration

that pairs the finest artists and craftspeople with

entertainment, performances and food from the area’s

finest restaurants. The Arts Festival is one of Columbus’s

signature experiences, attracting more than 350,000

attendees each year to experience the work of 240

local, national and international artists. The success

of our flagship event is due in no small part to the

generous support of local business and corporate

sponsors—making the festival completely privately

supported—as well as the efforts of nearly 400

volunteers. And 2012 celebrates the Arts Festival’s

exciting return to the Riverfront.

Our Community Arts Partnership Awards recognize

outstanding contributions to the arts by Columbus

businesses and individuals, and this year’s ceremony

saw more than 350 business leaders, artists, arts

patrons and arts organizations in attendance.

Each year, the Raymond J. Hanley Award, presented

by the Columbus Arts Endowment, grants $10,000

to an artist who has demonstrated a high level of

achievement while working at least five years in the

arts in any discipline. In October, the award’s third

presentation honored Gerald Charles, artistic director

of BalletMet Columbus.
