The beautiful Mediterranean and Iberian regions of the world can be thanked for producing the natural material, cork. Cork comes from the Cork Oak trees which can live up to 300 years in these areas. Its characteristics of being fire-retardant, buoyant and impermeable make it well suited for many uses.

Thousands of years ago, the Ancient Romans and Greeks used it to make sandals and fishing net floats. Later, it was also used to insulate homes and as a soft flooring cover. The most common use is wine bottle stoppers, which is quite convenient given the growing region’s close proximity to famed European wine producing countries. Perhaps Mother Nature was a bit of a wine drinker herself!

There is hardly a more beautiful and natural material than cork, yet it is one we have all probably taken for granted most of our lives. Cork is the phellem layer of the bark of the Cork Oak tree. It is extremely lightweight due to its honeycomb structure full of empty cells, which is also what allows it to float. This is also what gives it flexibility and certain softness with a suede-like feel.

Cork is generally used in its natural state of a light brown or sandy beige color. It can take on natural oils and stain to achieve richness while still retaining its intrinsic charm. Like all great works of art, cork doesn’t happen overnight. To that point, the first harvest of cork does not happen until the tree is at least 20 years old and is only harvested every nine years. Specialized workers, known as extractors, carefully remove the cork and lay it to dry in the elements for months before it is ready for use. Harvesting the cork actually keeps the tree alive!

The harvesting of the bark causes no permanent harm to the tree. Therefore, the trees remain to protect the landscape from erosion and create a place of refuge for animals; many of which are on the verge of extinction, including the Iberian lynx. All of this makes cork very sustainable, 100% eco-friendly and provides us with a functional, decorative material.
