COLUSA HIGH SCHOOLALUMNI ASSOCIATION
CHS
Every year, the days and weeks go by fast for our alumni com-mittee as we plan to send out this newsletter. Our objective is tocapture the story, theme, trend or moment in time, that bringsback the memories of your days at Colusa HighSchool. The search for a good topic goes onall year long. Lots of memories and activ-ities are out there for us to choosefrom, but sometimes they presentthemselves in a special way.
Over the 17-year history ofthis newsletter, the curricu-lum of Art has not scoredhigh on the list of totaldonations. The quietthree-letter curriculumis defined by a spec-trum of expressions, for personal andpublic enjoyment. For the average Co-lusa High Schoolstudent, art is prob-ably a little intimi-dating. Detail, imagination, lines, features and colors, outline its success.Talented artists canbring all these to-gether, to make a state-ment or a feeling, thatstands the test of time.
Colusa High School hasa new art teacher that hasbeen teaching at our school fora couple of years now. Her nameis Jean Summerville, and she hasmany students from freshman to sen-iors experiencing this expressive curricu-lum. She is following the long teaching tenuresof Mr. Kirkman, Mr. Rose and Mr. Been who wouldbe familiar to many alumni, as they all taught many years of artat Colusa High School.
This year, a couple of months after the alumni donations weredistributed to all the curriculums, a large manila envelope was sent
The “Art" of Becoming a Colusa High Alumto us, stuffed with 62 small cards made of commonly use art paper. They were all cut carefully, but not uniformly, creating many dif-
ferent sized cards, that had brush strokes of various colors, covering the outside of the cards. You could see
that a large painting had been created on apaper, with different colors and strokes of
the brush, that were then carefully cutinto greeting card form. Very cost
effective if you would asksomeone in the accounting
class. This creative designwas only part of the grand
art scheme that was de-veloped in this project.Jean Summerville wasteaching her studentsthe "fine art" of say-ing thank you.
We took the timeto read throughevery card and eachone was a work ofart. Handwrittennotes from all thestudents in her vari-ous levels ofclasses, each took
the time to express afew sentences of
thanks for the smallamount of money that
their curriculum had re-ceived. The money was
buying them the simple toolssuch as paint, brushes, paper
and other materials so they couldexpress their artistic abilities. All of us who attended Colusa High
School exhibited an artistic ability whetherit was in academics, athletics, business, music,
friendships and a variety of other routines of the highschool experience. The students in this class will always rememberparticipating in this small expression of thanks, that they artisticallypainted on our alumni memories. In turn, we need to rememberthem with our donations.

MISSION STATEMENTThe Colusa High School Alumni Association is an organization that helps support the curriculums at the high
school. All Colusa High School graduates are eligible to participate in the Alumni Association. Annual newsletters will en-
courage alumni to donate an amount equal to their year of graduation, such as 1963=$19.63, 1942=$19.42,and so on.Donations received will be accounted for and directed to the area of scholastic interest at Colusa High School,
so designated by the donating Alumni. These donations will be used to enhance the education of current ColusaHigh School students. The success of the Colusa High School Alumni Association is dependent upon the ideas, volunteer work and do-
nations of the Alumni.

Every year we contact over 3500 alumni with this newsletterasking for a small donation of $20. We appreciate all the sup-port we get from our alumni and we see a lot of potential inour numbers. If 3500 alumni send $20 we would generate$70,000 a year for our school. So let your small voice be oneof many that will give back to our school. Thank you for yoursupport!

During the 2002 ColusaHigh School academic year, our alumni committee beganthe work and planning to de-velop this annual newsletter.Throughout all the 17 yearsof reaching out to you, avery talented and commu-nity minded gentleman bythe name of Larry Yeghoian, quietly gave countless hoursof his time and interest to us,developing and supportingour communication withyou.
On Sunday, September 1,2019, in the early morninghours, we lost Larry, as hesuddenly passed away in hishome, here in Colusa. Wewanted to communicate withyou and express our sorrowin losing such a talentedfriend of our community andschool district, as he will behard to replace.
Larry loved to read themany memories that the Co-lusa High School alumniwould send back each yearwith their newsletter dona-tions. Many times he wishedthat his home town highschool would develop anewsletter, where the alumnicould reconnect with eachother, and remember theirtime in school back at home.
During the early years ofthis publication, Larry was
the Colusa Unified SchoolDistrict Superintendent. Hewas a very unique individ-ual, in that he was a great ac-ademic administrator whoguided a very busy programfor many years, yet he al-ways took the time to sup-port our community andencouraged us to rememberour past. Although the mon-ey we generated through do-nations really benefited hisschool district, he was moreimpressed by all of you, whoexpressed a love for Colusaand your school.
His love for our commu-nity was not limited to hiswork for our school district. He was very involved withour local Lions Club. Foryears you would find himearly in the morning servingour community by puttingout American Flags thatwould line the streets of Co-lusa on every holiday andthen respectfully retiredthem in the evenings, by col-lecting and putting themaway. You would see him inhis Lions vest at the begin-ning of our Colusa CountyFair Parade, starting all theentrants on their way downMarket Street to the await-ing crowds of people. An an-nual bike ride that hadhundreds participate over
the years, was managed byLarry and his fellow Lionswho guided bikers on 40 -70 and 100 mile coursesalong the Sacramento Riverand around the Sutter Buttes. All the funds raised were forlocal donation projects andscholarships for students.
Being an educator andadministrator, he guided uswith wisdom and positivecritique concerning articlesand theme content for thisnewsletter. The issue andtheme that gave him themost joy was the "Cuttingthe Square" article that out-lined our town hobby of thepast. He owned a muscle car,and over the years had par-ticipated in many local carshows, so cruising was a fa-vorite topic.
Even though he retiredfrom our school districtseven years ago, he still sup-ported the effort to producethis newsletter. Every year,
Larry and his wife Kandy, asmembers of our alumnicommittee, would fold andprepare more than 3000newsletters before our com-mittee met to stamp andlabel the letters. The weekthat Larry passed away, wewere scheduled to print, foldand mail this issue to you.We took a short pause, tohonor Larry and get this ar-ticle in place, to inform youof our community loss.
While reflecting on thissad event, we could not helpbut wonder, what wouldLarry do in this situation? He would have said, "Whatdo we need to do next?”“Let's get a plan and get towork!” So let's honor his ex-ample and work ethic, thathe so generously shared withall of us.
Thank you Larry!

If you haven’t had achance to stop by and see allthe new changes to the pro-gram, we would encourageyou to do so. It has been quitethe transformation in our de-partment for students andstaff. With these new facili-ties we will be able to providemore opportunities for stu-dents to use their hands togain more technical skills. Thecurrent job market is beggingfor more employees who havevocational and technical train-ing, and our department willbe able to provide those skillsnecessary for skilled employ-
ment. As this school year starts,
we will be celebrating 90years of FFA excellence in ourchapter. Our FFA reporter willbe posting pictures from pastFFA members to our FFAFacebook page. Please taketime to follow us and sendcomments or stories that wecan share with our member-ship. We believe it’s importantfor our new FFA members tounderstand the impact FFA hasmade on so many generationsthroughout the past
Your continued support ofthe Colusa FFA program pro-vides opportunities to manyFFA members who choose tostep up and challenge them-selves. Each year we usealumni funds to help studentsget to activities that improvetheir leadership skills, andbuild on their employmentskills.

45th Year Class Reunion
Dear Classmates,I’m excited to announce that our 45th Year Reunion of the Colusa
High School Class of 1975 is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2020.Please save the date!
I have accepted the role of Organizing Committee Chair. There’s agood story behind that, but I’ll only tease you with it for now and talkmore about it in the months ahead. I plan on sending out regular up-dates as we put together a great event for all of us to enjoy.
The way things are shaping up, we will probably use a venue likeThe Colusa Casino or some other place where we can sit down andenjoy a fun evening program together.
Our Committee goals are to maximize participation and fun whileminimizing the cost of a ticket. I think we’ll achieve both goals and itwill be an event that we will enjoy.
As for maximizing participation, I have my first request for you:Please help us get the word out to our classmates from 1975. Each ofus is likely to know how to contact someone that the Committeedoesn’t have a current address for. Thus, we can use our collective net-works to get this word out through the grapevine. Just have peoplecontact me at the email address or phone number below.
That’s it for now. Let’s get the word out, save that date, and lookforward together to a great event in August 2020! I hope to see all ofyou there.
Sincerely yours,Doug White
Memories – Colusa County Fair ParadeHow many alumni remember the parade at fair time? The Colusa
High School marching band, in full uniform, and floats with all thecolorful napkins tucked in chicken wire?
How many alumni are willing to step up to the challenge of bring-ing those memories alive again?
The 2020 theme for the Colusa County Fair is “Barn in the USA”.The class of ’68 and ’67 challenge the other classes to have a float inthe 2020 parade using the theme “Barn in the USA”.
You may decide to join forces with other classes for one float oryour class may decide to go it alone.
I know this will be a lot of work and someone will have to takethe lead to coordinate for your class. I’m confident there are localalumni who are willing to take on the challenge.
There are no prizes. The win is simple…• We give back to our community• We help to create new memories• We bring laughter and smiles to all• We have fun in the processMore to come over the following months. Feel free to reach out
to Marilyn Acree (530) 619-9317 with any questions.

Electric Car . . . Then and NowBy Stan GoodinClass of 1962
The perfect time to writeabout cars from when we wereteenagers is during Hot AugustNights in Reno, which is rightNOW. In fact, I just saw Markand Robbie Andreotti andWoody and KathyYerxa yesterday atthe event.
During the late50s and early 60syou had to build a hot car–youdidn’t just order one. Thosewere the days of the J. C. Whit-ney and Honest Charley partscatalogues. I knew them well.
Common terminology backthen included twice pipes, threeon the tree, four on the floor, second gear scratch, glasspacks and back rapping. Weused to “cut the square” andhangout at Rick’s and Jenkies.I remember when Rick rolledinto town in his VW bug withchrome reverse wheels!
Everyone had to stop at Pe-terson’s Chevron, Barney’sShell, Hap’s 76 or Wally’s Arcofor gas. It was 31 cents agallon in 1962when Igraduated. We alsospoke of Hed-man headers, AFBs, pin strip-ing, Hurst floor shifters, positraction rear ends, babymoons and tuck and roll uphol-stery.
Did anyone have an enginewith 260, 265, 283, 289, 327,348, 389, 390, 406 or 409 cubicinches? Or did anyone drive anImpala, Vette, GTO, 442, Mus-
tang, Sprint, Camaro, Corvair,Road Runner, Cutlass, Bel Airor El Camino?
I remember putting a 327Corvette engine in my 59’Chevy Impala and seeing whatit would do on our drag strip
on Lurline Avenue. Itonly had Hedmanheaders with no ex-haust system. When I
got back into town nearGraham’s Restaurant, I was
greeted by a CHP officer lean-ing on his car on the right sideof the road and a City PoliceOfficer, Jack Calcagno on theleft side. Jack motioned for meto pull over and said they hadreceived several complaints ofloud noise in the area. He thenasked me who I would ratherdeal with? I explained that wealways preferred to shop lo-cally, so I would deal withhim. He then presented mewith my ticket!
I can also remember dim-mer switches on the floor, armsignals, jockey boxes, rumbleseats, push button gear shifts,
cigarette lighters, ashtrays and street
dances withall the car ra-
dios tuned in tothe same station.
Those were the days youcould work on your own carand if it wouldn’t start youcould push it or pull it and popthe clutch and off you went. Itdidn’t get any better than that.
And, now about electriccars–they are quiet and boringwith zero personality!
The end . . .
Hello Colusa High Alumni! My name is Mary Colligan
and I am starting my 4th year asthe band director at Colusa HighSchool! We’ve had a great yearwith a lot of accomplishments forour students and I can’t wait tosee where we’re going next!
In the fall, we sent three stu-dents to Seattle to participate inthe Western International BandClinic Honor Band. These threestudents got to work with someoutstanding musicians and clini-cians to improve their craft. Wealso had a student accepted intothe prestigious Carnegie HallHonors Performance in NewYork! In the spring, our band par-ticipated in the California MusicEducators Association NorthernSection Band Festival where theyearned a straight superior and gotspecial comments from thejudges remarking on the maturityof the ensemble and their sound. It was a great day for our per-formance! Later that spring, theband participated in Music in theParks and once again earned aSuperior rating and 1st place intheir division!
At the end of last year, wewere able to use funds from yourgracious donations to purchaseformal concert attire for our stu-dents. This was the first time in
four year that the students hadmatching attire since the loss ofour concert attire before I cameinto the position. We have a won-derful updated look that reflectsthe professionalism of our group.Thank you everyone for yoursupport in this as it makes such apositive change for our studentsto feel uniform and be part of theteam that they are!
This year, you will see ourgroups performing at home foot-ball games, throughout the com-munity near the holidays, and at
our local performances in the Co-lusa Community Theater. We willalso be sending a student to par-ticipate in the Pacific Honors En-semble in Australia in September!Thank you everyone for yoursupport and we hope to see you atour performances!
