1. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This study reflects on the conceptualisation of transformable structures that storage and display of art nowadays, which employs versatile spatial supports. The main aim is to explore spatial and climatic advantages of such systems by dealing with environmental factors, fabrication, spatial flexibility and adaptation.

The key design principles of this workshop are:1) Spatial Flexibility (transformability within framework) 2) Programmatic Adaptability (non-tight fit spaces and polyvalence)3) Climatic Design (daylighting; and low-passive energy techniques) 4) Material and Construction (available/local materials, recyclable materials, and possibility of deconstruction)

The aim of The Art Box’s brief is to design a compact and polyvalent pavilion, which contains 3 main spaces: a main temporary gallery room; a bookshop and a café with public toilets. All the servant rooms and circulation should not exceed 15% of the overall area. The minimum area is 150M2 and it cannot exceed 400M2.

2. WORKSHOP TIMETABLE

WEEK 0: RESEARCH AND INITIAL IDEA2ND – 6TH OF MAY 2011

This first phase is a survey of exemplary design precedents. It is an introductory week (week zero) where students will investigate individually one case study and bring all material for the initial week in Tianjin. The first phase is a survey of exemplary design precedents such as: The MASP in Sao Paulo by Lina Bobardi; the Museum of Brazilian Sculpture by Pablo Mendes da Rocha in Sao Paulo; the Kuntshallen in Rotterdam or the Fondazione Prada in Milan by OMA; the MUSAC in Leon by Mansilla y Tuñon architects; the New Campus of the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou by Wang Shu (Amateur Architecture Studio); Museum of the Moving Image by Future SystemsTianjin Art Gallery By KSP Engel & Zimmermann Architekten; and the Liuyeyuan Museum for Buddhist Sculpture in Xinmin by Jiakum architects, among others. We also want to pay strong attention to the art exhibitions for Art Biennale in Venice or the Serpentine Gallery in London (summer pavilions). During this week, students will also develop the initial ideas and drafts, taking into account climatic and passive design principles. Students will also have the basic training of different design tools and techniques such as CAD, Adobe CS pack and climate design tools such as Ecotect, etc.

Representational and analytical digital tools will be applied into the design of each pavilion. A draft model will be fabricated at scale 1:50.

WEEK 3: WORKSHOP ON CLIMATIC DESIGN (PASSIVE SIMULATIONS) AND FINAL REVIEW 23RD -27TH OF MAY 2011 Venue: WSA, Cardiff University

23rd-26th of May: Workshop (full day)

During the final week (week 3) students will refine their design according to advanced climate simulation and by developing the construction details, and then edit it for the final review. We provide tutorial and studio support half day. The presentation will be two A1 posters; a physical model at 1:50 (constructed in WSA) and a visual presentation (Model of a constructive detail is optional).

WEEK 4: STUDY TRIP IN THE UK BY TIANJIN’S DELEGATIONFROM SUN 29TH OF MAY ONWARDS (TBC)

CHAPTER 1: HISTORY

In 1404 Ming dynasty, town of Tianjin was built. The city was planned by the traditional style.There was a cross road in the rectangular city town with a drum tower on the cross center,gateways in each side.

1.1 The Earliest StageIn 1860 Tianjin was occupied by invading force from British and France. Tianjin was openedas treaty port. In the same year, British, France and America built up concessions to the southoutside the old town.

1.2 The Second StageIn 1894 after the war, Germany and Japan also built up their concessions in Tianjin. Germanconcession was to the south of American, in the west bank of the Haihe river.

1.3 The Third StageDuring 1900~1902, Russia, Austria, Italy and Belgium took over concessions in Tianjin.Russian concession was in the east bank of Haihe river. It was 364.9 hectares. Belgiumconcession was to the south of Russian concession.

CHAPTER 2: SPACE & BUILDINGS

2.1 Blocks Scale of HumanityThe scale of the blocks: the scale of the large street is 8~10meters, while the one of the smalllane is 2.5~5meters. This scale of block and area is pedestrian-friendly.

2.3 Buildings along the StreetThe buildings along the street are almost single houses or united apartments about 3~4 storiesand 10~15 meters in height. There are small yards in front of the buildings which reduce thepressure of the buildings to the street. Buildings along the street have various styles to makerich vision of the street.

2.4 Commercial BuildingsThe retails on the ground floor of the buildings form a vivid atmosphere along the street. Theretails are mostly not developed by the government but operated by residents themselves orrented out. So the layout is flexible and the buildings have multi-purpose. Furthermore, thecommunity is so small that the residents can use the retails expediently.

2.5 Office BuildingsThe office buildings lain separately along the street do not serve the community. Peopleworking here drive from other parts of the city. So they bring the community parking problemand destroy the landscape of the street. This kind of offices cannot provide jobs for thecommunity as well.

2.6 Typical Dwelling SpaceStreet and lane (Li Nong: a form of fish bone)

It has a better security in the residential space. The privateness and atmosphere of life here isgood. There are a good number of old people who live in this kind of community space. Thereare few vehicles in the lane, so it is good for outdoor activities of the resident.

Encircled Space (Quadrangle)As the intermediate state, the surround form of space has better privateness and security ,providing a nice place for recreation and entertainment for the old and children. Bettersurrounded, it has a nice atmosphere of everyday life.

2.7 SummaryPrivate Level and Accessibility

Private level and accessibility are two contradictory factors in the community. But the laneform of space and the surround form of space solve the problems well.

RecognizabilityBecause of the variety of form, style and space organization, the community has betterrecognizability and is rich in vision.

Energy of the CommunityLane form of space: better accessibility and smaller scale of space, the interior space of lane isshort of energy and the sense of security.

CHAPTER 3: Analysis of the Area 1

3.1 Functional Kinds

Dwelling Buildings Cover 52.4% of Total AreaIncluding independent villa, social apartment, and hodgepodge houses (many families live inthe same apartment, poor living standard). The richness-poverty gap in the community islarge. The living standard in the apartments and hodgepodge is so low that it is only 18 sqmper household. There is no central heating in the apartment; kitchen and rest room are sharedby two or three families. The residents build small kitchens and rooms for storing coal in thecourtyard which result in the fragmentation and mass of the outdoor space. We are astonishedthat the buildings have so beautiful view from surface with poor vision and living qualityinside. That‘s the problem we should care. The ratio of old man there is very high, that’s aproblem also.

Offices Buildings Cover 38.5% of Total AreaThe offices are rented by companies outside the community, which can not provide jobs to theresidents but bring the problems of parking and destroy the landscape.

Commercial buildings cover 9.1% of total area.The commercial service has 3 levels by their qualities. The high and middle levels are locatedin a historical building called Ga Da Lou (an Italian styled building with some decoration onthe wall), with top grade service and high expense consumption, locating in the west end ofarea 1. The cheap ones are spread around the ground floor of the buildings along the street.Restaurant is the only kind of commercial service in the community, which needs shoppingand entertainment space as well.
