Ralph Hoffman is one of the pioneers of winter car testing in Arjeplog. He came here for the first time in 1979 (he thinks) and this may be his last season as a car tester.

Ralph Hoffmann came to Arjeplog to test ABS brakes for Opel in 1979. Now he is here for the last time, he thinks.

Ralph Hoffmann is one of the true pioneers of car testing in Arjeplog. When he came here the first time there were only about ten car testers.

“We drove to Arjeplog in an Opel Senator,” he said, remembering back.

They stayed at Kraja and the testers from BOSCH, BMW, Mercedes and Opel used to discuss the novelty called ABS-brakes over a beer in the evenings.

Hoffman got the job for Opel because he had studied brakes and suspensions and had had some ABS lessons at university. He said that he felt he was lucky that he studied the right things.

In the beginning Opel did not have its own garage. He explained that they hired the washing room at the Shell petrol station which was opposite the Silver Museum (where Harrys and Frasses are today). He remembers that they had great help from Lennart Löfgren who ran Shell.

After working for nine years for Opel, Ralph Hoffman got a job for Conti/Teves in Arvidsjaur developing

traction control systems for the first time and he said that the first car with traction control was the BMW 3-series.

Five years later it was time to change jobs again. He was involved in devel-oping Opel racing cars in those days.

In 1997 Herr Hoffmann got a prestigious job for Mitsubishi, which he still holds today. He is responsible for ABS/ESP as well as for research and development.

Next year Ralph Hoffmann turns 62 and will retire. He hopes to have time to play more golf and to improve his handicap, which is 26.

This & That...• Economical sanctions against The Arjeplog Times?

Allmänningen (an association that owns common land) has suggested in a letter to Mayor Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson that the Kommun should ‘react’ to an article in issue nr 5 of The Arjeplog Times. This article concerns the protests against the hydro-electric power plant that Allmäningen wants to build in the Arjeplog River system.

The letter urges the Kommun to ‘react’ because it (among many others) supports The Arjeplog Times financially.

Allmäningen claims that the article is biased, gives ‘bad will’ for Arjeplog and does not favour local businesses.

Many people feel that this letter, which is a public document, is an attempt to seriously infringe on the Swedish law concerning freedom of speech. This issue has now reached regional media.

• A big manifestation against the planned building of the hydro-electric power plant in Arjeplog will be held in the beginning of July this summer.

National celebrities are expected to take part in the manifestation. “We expect hundreds of people to come. We have contacted national TV and other media and they seem very interested in our event”, says Christer Borg, chairman of Älv­räddarna (National Association to Save Rivers).

Ska vi fika? Should we have a snack? Why not? Everyone loves a cozy coffee break with good coffee/tea and something really sweet and tasty to go with it.

The word ‘fika’ is typically Swedish and hard to translate into other languages. You take breaks with tea and coffee in other countries but ‘to have a cup of tea or coffee’ is not quite the same as ‘fika’.

One definition of fika is when you eat something sweet or have a snack and something to drink, while you have a meaningless, or meaningful, conversation with one or more friends, colleagues or family members.

The word ‘fika’ is both a noun and a verb. You can ‘fika’ and what you eat or drink is also ‘fika’. You can have fika at a ‘fik’ or café in town, in the kitchen at home, at work, at school, in the forest, on the lake, in the snow or at the gym.

Despite plenty of choices of coffee, tea and pastries what a real ‘fika’ should always be is a break from what you are doing and a moment of relaxation in good company.

The property where Bittes Café is situated today on the market square is to be totally renovated.

For about two or three years, the fate of the square and the building have been under investigation and various business-es have submitted bids for the property. Now the municipal council have agreed to allow the renovation of the building on the square. Mayor Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson said that this decision is a step towards the development of ‘Guld Klas’ Square in order to turn it into a vibrant place in the centre of Arjeplog for people of all ages. Part of this vision is a large café with outdoor seating and perhaps a stage.

It seems that Nelly’s Café will be renting the property on the square but there are no details right now.

Britt Marie Marklund who runs Bittes Café at the moment is dis-appointed that she will have to close down in the beginning of April. So will the flea market for the children of the world, that is next to the café and open every Friday afternoon.

Locals and car testers alike have often expressed the need for a cosy café in Arjeplog. A public place where you can ‘fika’ is important in a community.

The market square is also known as ‘Guld Klas’ Square and was named after Klas Lestander, a local who won a gold medal at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, USA in the biathlon (a combintion of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting).

Spare time activities: I enjoy working on our cottage by Lake Huron.

I am also restoring an old boat that came with the cottage, a Boston Wheeler from ‘64. I go mountain biking in my spare time.

What is good in Arjeplog?This is my second visit here, the last time was 7 years ago. I am fascinated that the landscape is so similar to that in northern Michigan. So it feels like I know the place.

It is good to be able to get to know my new Haldex colleagues and I also bump into old colleagues here and that is so nice. It is a good place to work, with very few distractions.

What is bad in Arjeplog?I haven’t been here long enough to see anything bad. I am lucky that it isn’t so cold here this week.

What music you enjoy?Alternative music from electronic to jazz. Both my wife and I listen to eclectic music, and it is nice that we can enjoy the same kind of music together.

What is important in life?Family and friends. Personal happi-ness which I think comes from loving what you do in life.

John Barlage, BorgWarner

John Barlage, BorgWarner and Ulf Herlin, formerly Haldex Traction, now BorgWarner, are in a process of integration at the moment.

As recently as February 1, 2011, the traction unit of Haldex was bought by the BorgWarner drivetrain systems group. This in order to add all-wheel drive equipment sales in Europe.

John Barlage, BorgWarner is in Arjeplog this week and explained that this aquisition complements and expands their company and re-establishes their position in Europe, where they have been under-represented.

Haldex Traction is acknowledged by many as a technology leader in its field and has a great strategic fit with BorgWarner. John and Ulf said that they will now be globally strong together and this will bring Haldex vehicle solutions to an even wider group of customers.

Haldex will continue with its two remaining divi-sions and projects.

The State, the regional governments or coun-ties and the municipalities are all responsible

for the citizens of Sweden. Simply put, the county councils are in charge

of health care and some cultural issues. The State is in charge of things such as compensation for parental leave (one year with 80% of the ordinary salary), overall health issues and the basic pension.

The State is also responsible for the major road network, railway network, major airports (not in Arvidsjaur, which is local), university education and State television (SVT 1 and 2) and radio, to name a few.

Each Kommun in Sweden is responsible for local childcare, schools and elderly care as well

as technical services such as local streets and roads, water and sewage and refuse collection.

It goes without saying that it is difficult to oper-ate a Kommun with a small number of residents who must share the costs. It is probably more complicated, the fewer inhabitants you have.

The Kommun receives tax money from each citizen. It is up to the Kommun to provide educa-tion as well as care for the young and for the old using this money.

In order to accomplish our task we must have a sufficient number of citizens to share the costs,

otherwise the burden on each and every one will be too much – as I have written before.

However, we can do a lot in order to grow. We have now identified some key points to work

with, both short term and long term. We have to make the municipality attractive to

live in and to visit, and one issue that is important is culture. People who want to move look at the cultural status of the place they are thinking of moving to. Perhaps more nowadays than before.

Families with children look at the level of educa-tion for their children and our plan is to be best in Sweden!

Home:Arvidsjaur, since 1987. I was born in Moskosel and lived in Älvsbyn.

Occupation: I have worked on and off at Arvidsjaur Airport since 2003 but now I work here full-time.

I am a traffic assistant, my service duties include check-in and ticketing, bagage handling and administration.

My husband runs a business where I do the paperwork and salaries.

Before this, I worked for 20 years at a travel agent.

Favourite food: Alpine char (röding) from the moun-tain lakes.

Dream car: A red super sports car, for example an Audi, with 2 doors for me and my daughter, when we want to go shopping.

Spare­time activities: I do not have so much spare time, we work a lot. I spend time with family and friends, go for walks, snow- mobiling. When I have time, I also like to bake and to cook.

Our daughter Amelia competes in alpine or downhill skiing and we take the time to go with her to the different competitions every second weekend, all around Norrbotten.

What’s good in Arvidsjaur?The airport, of course!We have everything you need here and it is close to everything. It is one and a half hours to the East coast, one and a half hours to Stockholm, and only two and a half hours to the mountains.

There is a lot for children to do here such as slalom, indoor bandy (floorball), swimming. There is a good gym, good schools, and stables.

What’s bad in Arvidsjaur?Nothing, really.

What music do you listen to?All kinds of music but I prefer to watch a film. I also like dancing, so dance music is good.

What’s important in life? To be healthy is important. To be happy with what you do and to be satisfied with your life.

Arvidsjaur Airport was opened 20 years ago and is extremely important for the region, for car testing, events and tourism. And of course for the locals.

The runway is longer than most in the northern interior of Sweden which allows for international charter jet planes.

There have been various airlines flying to Arvidsjaur from Stockholm over the years and now it is NextJet that run these domestic flights.

At the moment there are discus-sions as to which company will

continue after October and everyone is hoping that it will be a company with good service, good prices and planes.

FlyCar has been flying charter flights for car testers between Ger-many and Arvidsjaur for ten years.

Many families of car testers have visited and are visiting the area taking advantage of the special discount FlyCar are giving to celebrate their 10 years of service.

This year Air Berlin also has flights between Germany and Arvidsjaur.

In a residential area in Arjeplog, this house certainly stands out. Magna Powertrain are renting this private home and have put up their banners.

During the winter months Arjeplog is very unlike Arjeplog during the rest of the year. The town more than doubles the number of inhabitants for these few months and there is a definite international character.

Many of the locals rent out their private homes and in the residential areas it is possible to see many unusual cars and other things such as the banners and lights outside this private home. No­one can pass this house without seeing who is staying there now.

Arjeplog, a Very Different Place in Winter

Silvervägen or the Silver Road (Highway 95) is the only Swedish national road in the mountains and runs from the east coast at Skellefteå to Bodø in Norway.

The name refers to the shipments of silver ore and lead ore that went from Nasafjäll to a port on the Gulf of Bothnia.

The Nasa Silver Mine, Nasafjäll, is located on Nasa Mountain on the border between Sweden and Norway and was used for mining silver from 1635 to 1810.

Although it was a commercial fiasco, and never delivered much silver, it was historically important as it contributed to the development of infrastructure in this part of Lapland, most notably the Nasa trail and the town of Arjeplog.

Belgian Soldiers Arrested after Brawl in Arvidsjaur

Four Belgian soldier were arrested after a big fight at Hotel Laponia in Arvidsjaur last Saturday. The professional soldiers aged 52, 42, 31 and 24 years are part of a group doing winter training in Arvidsjaur.

Last Saturday was their day off and they went to Laponia to have some fun. At closing time the trouble started. According to the local paper one of the Belgian soldiers head-butted a local woman. After that they attacked both the hotel security guards and the police.

On Wednesday three of them were still being held in jail awaiting possible prosecution.

It is believed that the soldiers involved in the fighting will have to deal with both Swedish courts as well as Belgian military authorities.

The police are looking for informa-tion from anyone who may have witnessed the brawl in Arvidsjaur.

Last year Dutch soldiers beat up four local men outside Hotel Laponia.

The military authorities in charge of winter activites in Arvidsjaur are going to look into ways of preventing such incidents occurring in the future.

105 km from central Arjeplog, you come to the arctic circle where you find a turn-off to Vuoggatjålme, a resort with cottages, helicopter trips and a new restaurant with an incred-ible view. The food is based on local produce and they are open every day.

The stretch over the border to Norway is sensitive to the strong winds and snow, so if you are planning to drive all the way to Norway, check the sign just outside of Arjeplog that is lit up if the road is closed.
