Divine Current ECKANKAR in Wisconsin Quarterly Newsletter and Calendar of Public Events

the April / May / June 2018

Volume 22, Issue 2

When I was in my twenties a friend my own age had

cancer. He went to a children's hospital because most peo-

ple with his disease did not make it to adulthood. I was

deeply affected by visiting a ward full of sick children who

were trying to make the best of things among the tubes,

balloons, and stuffed animals. I prayed, "Please God, help

them."

That night I became very ill with flu-like symptoms. The

sleepless nights that followed gave Holy Spirit an opportu-

nity to speak to me, not in words, but with a deeper sense

of surrender and understanding of life's meaning and pur-

pose.

I realized my prayer was telling God what to do. I had

forgotten to recognize God's care and love for Its creation

and that God already knows what is best for each Soul.

Each of us is on a divine journey home to God with

many classrooms of experiences and successive grades of

unfoldment. Experiences are less about right and wrong,

good and bad. Soul learns by cause and effect through its

own experiences and purifies itself through many lifetimes

of spiritual growth.

True prayer becomes the art of listening to the voice of

God. We can listen for the voice of God through a prayer

of appreciation and recognition of the presence of God. A

simple way to do this is to open our hearts and sing HU,

(pronounced like the word hue) a song of love to God.

This story is not so much about illness, but about sur-

render. By learning how to pray a non-directed prayer, I

make a conscious connection with God. Within that rela-

tionship I can learn about my spiritual lessons and responsi-

bilities. This divine education of Soul is the divine blessing

that teaches me to be in agreement with the ways of God's

love. And to remember that even when I have a hard time

with the lessons of love, God still loves me. Continues on back page

Sri Harold Klemp, the spiritual leader of Eckankar talks

about true prayer in the book, The Drumbeat of Time. "True

prayer lets things be. It shows trust that God has done

things right. It says, "God you are doing a good job. Every-

thing is ok." Harold goes on to say, "I would like to leave

you with the blessing we usually use in ECK. It doesn't tell

God to do anything. It doesn't tell you to be or to do any-

thing differently. But it is simply accepting things as they are

according to the will and the love of God, and that is: ‘May

the blessings be.’"

Chuck Carmody is a member of the Eckankar clergy and a

resident of Door County.

Letting God Speak

e know that when we make a clear, direct connection

with the Holy Spirit, we will understand how It works in

our life without even asking. It doesn’t matter whether you

pray or not, to God or anyone else—life brings you what

you need, anyway.

The difference is, when you sing HU and sit silently in

contemplation, you are letting God speak to you, to show

you why certain things are going on in your life. In other

words, you gain a greater understanding of the ways of the

Holy Spirit.

—Harold Klemp, The Sound of Soul, p. 44

“… A word to help open your heart to God’s love is HU. It

is an ancient, sacred name for God.

Sing it with love as you look and listen within.”

—Harold Klemp, The Sound of Soul, pp. 72-73
