THE APPLICATION OF NURSINGINFORMATICS IN THE NURSING

PROCESS>Group 8Evidence Based Support-e.g. online analysis through statistics,

data translation & patient profiling-promotes optimal operations, efficiency &

    consistency during the implementation

phase>Electronic Communication-basis of measuring optimal operations,

excellence, and safety & well being ofpatients

Assessment-involves collecting vital data & fundamentalinformation necessary for the next process

-should be extracted correctly-vital data: demographic/basic data, currenthealth status, medication irregularities, medical conditions, patients healthproblems

-relevant data: drug orders, lab results, xrayresults, etc.

-data could be gathered by: Physicalassessment, Interviewing, observing &using the basic senses

    Nursing Informatics in Assessment>Computer-enhanced Automated

Nursing Assessment-can mitigate (lessen) potential problems

by integrating it into the statisticalinformation system

Diagnosis-involves proper comprehension of patientscondition and responses

-complex process and uses aspects ofintelligence, critical thinking & deeperthoughts of understanding

-provide basis for selection of nursinginterventions to achieve outcomes for whichthe nurse is accountable

Nursing Informatics in Diagnosis>Integration of Health Information

    System-offers sharing of techniques, success

processes, medication performance, good tactics & simple medicationapproach

-can provide predictive values, whichfacilitates diagnosis and decisionprocess

    Planning-main ingredients & components: setting

priorities, predicting expected outcome &establishing time tables-sets the stage for writing nursing actions byestablishing nursing pathways to streamlinethe activity, response & directions

Nursing Informatics in Planning>Computer Simulation-can predict results & test if the expected

results match with the available data-prepares time table and, optimal schedule

    and efficient strategies.

Implementation-action phase in the nursing process-details specific actions and activities thenurse need to execute based on plans

*Documentation is essential on this partof the process since it will provide details& record of the actual execution as wellas the nursing behavior towardsachieving the expected outcome.

    Nursing Informatics inImplementation

    >Computer Simulation-enhances decision making of the nurse-searching for options and solutions that is

readily fit for a patients condition ismade possible for the nurse

Evaluation-assessing the patients condition afterimplementation of nursing actions

    Nursing Informatics in Evaluation>Computers

-processing large amounts of data-help identify outcomes based onproblems & needs

    -estimate time frame for reachingoutcome

-record & store observations, patientresponses & own evaluation statements.

Documentation-focus: health assessments, clients careplans, medication, administration records, nursing notes and discharge plan

Nursing Informatics in Documentation>Computerized Documentation-advantages: legible notes, time & date

included in all entries, and initials of the person making the entries, fastercharting

    >Standard Nursing Care Plans-can be stored in the computer to help in

    determining individualized client careplan

BENEFITS OF NURSING INFORMATICS TOPRACTICE APPLICATION

Nursing informatics-Nursing Information System (NIS)-computer systems that manage clinical datafrom a variety of healthcare environments-made available in a timely and orderlyfashion to aid nurses in improving care-key features/ benefits:

    >Patient Charting-storage of information, data translationvia statistical information system

    >Clinical Data Integration-sharing of information from one

department to another>Decision Support-provide prompts and reminders-guides to disease linkages between signs

and symptoms & online access tomedical resources are made available

    >Better Care Planning-time spent on care planning reduced, &

quality of record is improved-complete care plans, assessments &

    evaluations

MINIMUM NURSING COMPETENCIES-minimum set of nursing competencies innursing informatics to be able to use thenursing information system efficiently whilebeing able to attend to the client at thesame time

Computer peripheral devices such asCD ROMs, DVDs, Flash Disk, Etc.

    Understand how the computeroperates

Computer applications to enter clientdata (demographic, vital signs, physiological data)

Simple database applications to enterand retrieve data and information

Accesses, enters and retrieves datarelated to the client care via availablehospital or nursing informationsystems

Email systems to communicate withother health care professionals

    Effective use ofspreadsheet with datapresentation

Applies technology support to provideevidence-based practice

Database application to enter andretrieve data and information

Understand the ethical standardsrelated to data security, confidentialityand clients right to privacy

    Manipulates and enhances nursingdata sets

    Understands fundamental conceptsand statistics
