My photos are sometimes not the most flattering but will help buyers bidding online. The herd enjoys a clean health status on Johnes, BVD and Lepto; no homebred animal has ever indicated IBR but Lot 1 cow has shown exposure; we think this is due to a non-marked vaccine as none of her calves or any other animal has ever shown and she is an excellent do-er. In any case animals are vaccinated for IBR immunity at weaning and boosted annually. Dehorning is usually done late summer as some “polled” animals develop scurs- we dehorned in August so marks may still show. The herd has been developed to create deep and wide maternal cows living on forage, with good milk and nice temperament. None of the cows get hard feed and weaned calves only get enough to maintain growth in their first winter; on organic feed was too dear for hungry cows! Therefore the heifers you see only got good silage and an oat based handful in their first winter, with calves creep fed for 3 weeks in November to make weaning easier. Bulls and surplus heifers have in recent years been sold to commercial herds at 2 years old, allowing them to grow naturally. The herd was started from bought in heifers and we have been very judicious in what is kept. The dispersal of the herd is due to being unable to find a full time unit, and as several small leases come to an end the hard decision has been made to return to full time employment off the land and hopefully allow these animals to be taken on by farmers with time and care to realise their potential. THE “SPARTAN” HERD DISPERSAL SALE

Johnes BVD & Lepto Free, IBR vaccinated, in SAC Health Scheme. P’D results announced prior to sale.

MONDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2020

We find ourselves in strange times and due to viewing restrictions as the vendor I have provided an honest and

full catalogue; as the sale will be dispersal conditions it is hoped the prospective buyer finds help in this guide. My

photos are sometimes not the most flattering but will help buyers bidding online. The herd enjoys a clean health

status on Johnes, BVD and Lepto; no homebred animal has ever indicated IBR but Lot 1 cow has shown

exposure; we think this is due to a non-marked vaccine as none of her calves or any other animal has ever shown

and she is an excellent do-er. In any case animals are vaccinated for IBR immunity at weaning and boosted

annually. Dehorning is usually done late summer as some “polled” animals develop scurs- we dehorned in August

so marks may still show.

The herd has been developed to create deep and wide maternal cows living on forage, with good milk and nice

temperament. None of the cows get hard feed and weaned calves only get enough to maintain growth in their first

winter; on organic feed was too dear for hungry cows! Therefore the heifers you see only got good silage and an

oat based handful in their first winter, with calves creep fed for 3 weeks in November to make weaning easier.

Bulls and surplus heifers have in recent years been sold to commercial herds at 2 years old, allowing them to

grow naturally. The herd was started from bought in heifers and we have been very judicious in what is kept. The

dispersal of the herd is due to being unable to find a full time unit, and as several small leases come to an end

the hard decision has been made to return to full time employment off the land and hopefully allow these animals

to be taken on by farmers with time and care to realise their potential.

register the animals in their name please advise the mart at purchase and the vendor shall pay for transfer.

UK528372 100143 Herdbook No: 673802457

Great figures and my sweetest family founder, mother of Sister twins Jane and Jean and Spartan Logan. Calves are light

from this family and pop out and grow; this bull calf is starting to stretch and will be a long bull with good maternal

characteristics. Back teats are smaller but work.

Lot 4 SPARTAN GEORGIA (H) 7 YEARS SIRE: UK500538 300260 (563801798) Triumph of Skaillhouse

Georgia is lengthy and lovely natured, but has a turned foot so carriage is awkward. Kept for a reason and her

strawberry roan sprightly young bull calf has great potential.

A great example of the length and capacity Exuberant left on the herd. Front two teats were dry from 2019 with no sign of

infection; doing a very correct long heifer well on two quarters, as she did year prior.

Lot 8 SPARTAN LANCASTER JESSIE (H) 5 YEARS SIRE: UK540307 700359 (513804148) Glenisla Exuberant

Lot 8A Calf Not Reg UK528372 600148 SIRE:UK587047 700004 (623800373) Housebyres Jethro Tull

A backwards bull calf twin didn’t make it so this heifer calf isn’t registered. Mother is another super broad and quiet

Exuberant cow from a great milky line and the calf for a little twin has fairly caught up.

The first of the Sister twins, great teat placement and spit out calves which turn out well (always selected to breed). Sweet.

The second Sister twin, she also has effortless calves that grow into keepers. One teat dried off, otherwise a lovely cow.

Fearn Elsie Floss was a very stylish cow; her daughter carries docility, femininity and milk. She isn’t the fullest fleshed but

puts everything into the calf; this calf is a showy heifer with everything going for it.

One of my favourite Exuberant daughters. She has a few lumps on a back leg that come on when she is in milk but never

caused discomfort last year or this. A super stretchy big bull calf.

A broad strong dark roan cow from a large milky dam with a very sweet heifer at foot. I perhaps named the calf wrongly; a

small one with a cheeky face at birth her summer growth and genes say she will be a powerful lady. An impressive unit.

Herdbook No: 583800376 Lost twins during stress of TB testing. Bred best bull calf in herd competition and has a

sweet heifer in the yearling pen. Older lady, not great feet and on a diet just now. They are an easy fleshing family and this

cow milks so well, just a great mother that doesn’t disappoint.

Herdbook No: 633802604 As above, lost twins in reaction to tuberculin test injection. This is an immense cow that has

given two good calves already. The pen tending stockman John Dick said “buy the one with the ripped lug, she’ll make

some cow”; she has. A kindly favourite, brought inside to keep weight off & should be well in calf but will be PD on day.

Herdbook No: 633803830 Calved a tremendous roan bull but a silly accident through no fault of her own meant the calf is

hand reared. Blind in one teat due to an infection drying off. Her first calf as a heifer is in the In Calf Heifer pen; not the

biggest cow but a line with great conformation and she deserves another chance.

The Spartan herd managed to secure Jethro in a private purchase from Andrew and Lisa Hall’s small herd. I much admired

his mother and her super old breeding that clicked with the admired Alvie Blue Eyed Boy with his Canadian bloodlines.

Jethro is a testament to the breeder, a placid lad but plenty of energy for cows. Never gets more than a mineral yet stays in

condition. After getting the length I needed from Glenisla Exuberant and homebred Hidalgo, Jethro has injected super

fleshing to the calves and for a wide bull his calves are easily born and quick to suck. I cannot speak highly enough of this

gentleman.

Young Heifers Free of the Bull.

No description required; their breeding and dams/ sire are here in the herd to see.

They have been at clean grass all summer with no feed. Everyone has a temperament allowing handling in the

field. This is what the Spartan herd was aiming for; maternal deep and wide females for easy care cows.

This eight are the best of the heifers born; a uniform bunch that would normally be going to bull now.
