2.14Significant Activities and contributions made by IQAC
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell organised following programmes during the academic year
Academic Evaluation of the Departments: The Academic Evaluation of both UG and PG departments of the college was done
between end of March and beginning of April 2017. Each department presented their performances in the year along with the
student feedback about teaching as well as overall performance of the department. A few suggestions were given to these
departments for further improvement.
NAAC-IQAC prepared and submitted The Week Hansa Ranking of best colleges in India and St Aloysius College has been
ranked 23 among the Best Science Colleges in India in 2017. It also participated in the NIRF Ranking conducted by MHRD,
Govt. of India and our college has been ranked 44 among the best Colleges in India.
It has also submitted the proposal to India Today ranking for the Best Colleges in India.
FDP: In the beginning of the year a week long orientation programme was organised for the newly recruited staff members
from May 29 to June 3, 2017. There was FDP Programme for all the staff on June 02 & 03, 2017. Another FDP was
organised on November 17 & 18, 2017 separately for junior and senior staff members.
To bring an awareness among the faculty both at teaching and nonteaching level the college organized workshop on
Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) and Protection of Children from Sexual Harassment (POCSO) on June 15, 2017.
IQAC drafted the proposal for Deemed to be University Status of the college which was sent to Jesuit General at Rome and the
same was approved. It prepared an enlarged proposal of the same proposal with annexures to be submitted to MHRD through
proper channel.
To create an awareness among the students and the staff members about the constitution of India, „Constitution Week‟ was
organized from January 22, to 25, 2018. Various programmes like workshop for student council members, competitions for
students and guest talks for staff members were arranged.
A seminar on “Secularism, Nationalism and Communal Politics” was organised on October 07, 2017.
Meetings:
Faculty Meetings: convened the meetings of Arts, Science, Commerce, BBM and BCA Faculty to plan for the year in the
beginning of the year.
Staff Council Meetings: Arranged two staff council meetings for both PG and UG Councils.
Meetings of Various Committees: Meetings of special committees like library committee, admission committee, examination
reform committee, malpractice committee, grievance cell, Mentors, class guides and other meetings were held during the year.
IQAC Meeting: The meeting of the IQAC along with external experts was held on August 28, 2017 and on February 26, 2018.
The suggestions of these meetings are taken up for further improvement.
Communication:
o Weekly Programmes: The IQAC prepared the programmes of the upcoming week in the college and circulated to every staff
member through email and whatsapp group.
o Daily Programmes: Days Programmes are prepared and circulated through email.
o C C TV: Important notices, circulars and daily events, photographs as well as news and documentaries prepared by the
students are displayed in the college through CCTV by IQAC.
Documentation: In order to document the activities as well as to record them, IQAC publishes monthly newsletterin the name
of SAC IQAC BULLETIN.
Research: In coordination with the Research Centre of the college, it sent information related to various funding agencies,
research opportunities, workshops, training and summer camps to staff and students. It also gave information related to
Orientation and Refresher Courses as well as short term courses offered by different academic staff colleges in the country.
Coordinators for Research studies have been actively involved in promoting Research among the staff and students by
circulating information of various funding agencies as well as evaluating of the Research activity in the college.
Feedback: The feedback of the following stakeholders was taken and the analysis of the feedback was done. Based on these
feedback IQAC gave suggestions to concerned authorities. Student Feedback on teaching methodology was taken at the end of
the semester. Each department took the feedback from the students at the end of the academic year. Feedback from the parents
was taken during PTS meetings Teachers‟ feedback was taken at the end of the academic year

1. Teaching
Learning
Faculty meetings were held in the beginning of the year and discussed the teaching
learning methodology to be adopted. At the end of the academic year evaluation
meeting of the faculty was held.
Workshop on Teaching methodology was held during the year.
More guest lecture were organized all most in every department.
Mobile envisioned learning was initiated in a few PG Departments.
2. Research
NineStaff members have obtained Ph.D during the year 2017-18
New Research Policy: The MJES has enacted and implemented a Research Policy with
effect from October 2017 to promote the research ambience, create and sustain a
research culture, motivate staff and students to engage in research activities and to
provide a broad framework to guide scholarly research.
New Research Room: A separate research room with necessary infrastructural
facilities has been set up for the research scholars in the first floor of Administrative
block.
New Research Centres: PG Departments of Chemistry and English have been
recognized as the Research Centres for Ph.D programme by Mangalore University.
Department of Science & Technology has sanctioned a DST –FIST five year project (–
Fund for Improvement of S & T Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational
Institutions) to our college on 2nd March 2012 with a total cost of Rs. 45,50,000/-
(Rupees Forty Five Lakh and Fifty Thousand only). The project has completed and
submitted project completion report to Department of Science andTechnology on 8th
July 2017.
This year we have applied for DST –FIST (Level -0) - 5 year project- Total Budget -
1,11,50,000/- FIST – Advisory Board has identified our college for support in Level-0
category with a total cost of 95 Lakh. As per their requirement the quotations have
been finalized and prioritized equipment‟s are uploaded.
Biotechnology Skill Enhancement Program (BiSEP): The Department of PG
Biotechnology is identified by the Govt. of Karnataka for the Biotechnology Skill
Enhancement Program (BiSEP). The program is for the next 5 years. A financial aid of
Rs 10 Lakh per year and a student fee of Rs 50,000 per student, for 20students per year
for the duration of 5 years (Total amount will be equal to 100 Lakh) is sanctioned.
Minor/Major Research Projects:
The College is having 8 ongoing Minor research projects which were sanctioned in
2015-16. Annual reports of these projects have been submitted and the final report
along with UC will be submitted by May 2018. We have completed 28 minor research
projects in 2017-18 and submitted final report along with UC to UGC.
Under the VGST scheme of KFIST Level (2).Prof. Ruban S. has been awarded Rs. 40
lakh (for 2 years) for the project entitled “Setting up BigData Lab andusing analytics to
identify and manage high risk and high cost patients in nearby hospitals” in November
2017
Dr Asha Abraham has completed a BRNS Major Research project entitled
“Adrenergic receptor subtype functional correlation in the brain and pancreas of high
fat simple carbohydrate fed C57BL/6J mice: Implications in metabolic syndrome”
(Amount Sanctioned Rs. 29,11,060/-) in May 2017.
All the minor research projects sanctionedduring earlier years have been completed
and necessary reports have been submitted to the sanctioning authorities.

6 Faculty members applied for grants under various schemes of Karnataka-Fund for
Infrastructure Strengthening in Science and Technology in Higher Education
Institutions (K-FIST).
Large number of students applied for Science Academy‟s Summer Research
Fellowship (SRF); the results are awaited.
One Research Laboratory is named „Prof. C. N. R. Rao – Instrumentation Lab‟,
commemorating the visit of Prof. C.N.R. Rao, Bharat Ratna Awardee. Environmental
Concerns
The students of DDU Kaushal Kendra, St. Aloysius College Mangalore celebrated The
Vanamahotsava programme on 14thJuly 2017.
Centre for Social Concern organized Door to Door intervention to create awareness on
Solid Waste Management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and egregaion) in Baikampady,
Panamboor, Kulai, Kunjathabail, Dongerekeri, KasbaBengre, ThotaBengre, Bunder,
Central Market and Jalligudda from November 2017 till date.
Department of Botany organized „Vanamahothsava‟ through seed balls on 28-7-2017
at 2:45pm in Botany Lab. As a reparation to this event, on 14-7-2017 the members of
the Bioscience association prepared seed balls of four different kinds of plants namely
Calophylluminophyllum (Honne), Coixlacryma-jobi (Chinese pearl barley),
Adenantherapavonia (Chenne Kai) and Indigoferatinctoria (Indigo).
Department of MCA, M. Sc (ST), M. Sc (BI) and PGDCA organized
„SwachhthaPakwada‟ – A Govt. of India initiative was held at AIMIT in the first week
of September 2017.
NCC Army Wing conducted Beach cleaning program on the 16th of September in
order to mark the International Coastal Cleanup Day. Campus Cleaning Drive
&SwacchBharath Program was conducted by the coy on 23th September 2017. The
cadets from the college also took part in a sanitation awareness drive conducted by the
18 KAR BN NCC at the Wenlock Hospital, Hampankatta
NSS Volunteer of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) planted pepper creepers in front
of the Arrupe block on the occasion of Vanamahothsava.
NSS units of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) in association with Red Cross unit of
Government First Grade College, Balmata had organized vanamahothsava and campus
cleaning program on 9 July, 2017 at Government First Grade College, Balmata,
Mangaluru.
NSS Volunteers cleaned the garden and its surroundings. Bushes were cut into neat
shapes and few plantshave been planted in the garden. Drainage is made throughout
the campus surroundings to clear therain water and the ground is levelled by filling the
pits in the groundwith mud. The college surroundingsalso have been cleaned by the
volunteers.
NSS Units of St Aloysius College(Autonomous) had under taken a water conservation
project for Shambhaviriver in Sankalakariya village near Kinnigoli. Under the
guidance of villagers. Volunteers laid barriers of wooden planks to the Shambhavi
river dam. Wooden planks are assigned in such a way that the soil erosion will be
prevented, so that water is stored in the dam. Collected water will be used for
agriculture, cattle dairy, and paddy harvesting and drinking in the surrounding villages.
The Program was organized on Sunday, 3 December, 2017.
NSS Units of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) is one of the member teams of
SwachaMangaluruAbhiyan headed by ShriRamkrisha Mission, Mangaluru. Staff and
the students of the college participated in two cleaning programs and two awareness
program under swachaMangaluruAbhiyaan in the current academic year. In the
awareness program students visited the houses and the shops and created awareness
among the citizens about cleanliness by requesting them to keep their surrounding
places clean. In the Cleanliness program students participated in the cleaning program
in the public places.

Improvement in
Placement
In preparation to Campus recruitment, the Final Year students were imparted Soft
Skills as a platform to learn and display employability skills with the following topics
that could help them to feel job ready as they start appearing for interviews: Self
Awareness, Self Esteem, Positive Attitude, Communication Skills, Time Management,
Platform Roles, Self-introduction, telephone Etiquette, Presentation Skills, Confidence
Building, Curriculum Vitae, Negotiation Skills, Group Discussion, FAQ‟s Interview,
Mock Interview, Public Speaking and Aptitude Test.
A workshop to improve students‟ performance in job interviews was organised by the
Student Council on 09/8/17 in Eric Mathias Hall at 1:40pm for the 3rd year degree
students who had registered for campus placement interviews.
Career Guidance: Pre placement training for the final year MCA and MSc Software
Technology, Bio students was held from 2nd to 4th August 2017 from 9.00 am to 5.00
pm

2.12How does IQAC Contribute/Monitor/Evaluate the Teaching & Learning processes:
In the beginning of the year it convenes the faculty wise meetings for the planning of the year‟s
programme.
It convenes separate meetings of Vice principals, Deans and various other committees in the
College regularly.
IQAC organizes staff training for all and Staff Orientation Programmes for the beginners in the
beginning of each Semester.
It also deputes the staff to attend refresher/ short term courses organized by the Academic Staff
Colleges under UGC.
It keeps track with the research activities of the staff members. It encourages them to apply for
Major, minor research programmes, present papers in national seminars and publish their research
articles in reputed journals.
The IQAC has also taken up issues related to Gender sensitivity as well environmental concerns
and proposed necessary suggestions in this regard.
It arranges meeting of all its members twice a year to take stock of the quality improvement in the
college.
Besides, it takes feedback from the parents, students and the staff of the college on academic as
well as administrative matters.
At the end of the academic year it conducts the review meetings of all the departments, the
suggestions of these meetings are placed before the Staff Council for further action.

3.Research, Consultancy and Extension 3.1 Initiatives of the IQAC in Sensitizing/Promoting Research Climate in the institution
The College Publishes 4 Research Journals which give opportunity to both the staff and the students to publish their
research work.
The theses of research scholars of the College are made available in the College library.
Seed money provided for those pursuing Minor Research Projects.
Laboratory fees waived for the staff pursuing Ph.D.
Student Research is funded at PG level. They are also advised to apply for funding the projects to various national
bodies.
UG Science students are asked to take up at least one Research Project as a part of their curriculum.
Invited eminent Scholars and Scientists to the Campus to motivate students and staff on Research.
Coordinator for Research studies has been actively involved in promoting Research among the staff and students by
circulating information of various funding agencies as well as evaluating of the Research activity in the college.
New Research Policy: The MJES has enacted and implemented a Research Policy with effect from October
2017 to promote the research ambience, create and sustain a research culture, motivate staff and students to
engage in research activities and to provide a broad framework to guide scholarly research.
New Research Room: A separate research room with necessary infrastructural facilities has been set up for the
research scholars in the first floor of Administrative block.
New Research Centres: PG Departments of Chemistry and English have been recognized as the Research
Centres for Ph.D programme by Mangalore University.
New schemes obtained:
Department of Science & Technology has sanctioned a DST –FIST five year project (– Fund for Improvement
of S & T Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions) to our college on 2nd March 2012
with a total cost of Rs. 45,50,000/- (Rupees Forty Five Lakh and Fifty Thousand only). The project has
completed and submitted project completion report to Dept. of Science and Technology on 8th July 2017. This year we have applied for DST –FIST (Level -0) - 5 year project- Total Budget -1,11,50,000/- FIST –
Advisory Board has identified our college for support in Level-0 category with a total cost of 95 Lakh. As per
their requirement the quotations have been finalized and prioritized equipments are uploaded
Biotechnology Skill Enhancement Program (BiSEP): The Department of PG Biotechnology is identified by the
Govt. of Karnataka for the Biotechnology Skill Enhancement Program (BiSEP). The program is for the next 5
years. A financial aid of Rs 10 Lakh per year and a student fee of Rs 50,000 per student, for 20 students per
year for the duration of 5 years (Total amount will be equal to 100 Lakh) is sanctioned.
Minor/Major Research Projects:
The College is having 8 ongoing Minor research projects which were sanctioned in 2015-16. Annual reports of
these projects have been submitted and the final report along with UC will be submitted by May 2018. We
have completed 28 minor research projects in 2017-18 and submitted final report along with UC to UGC.
Under the VGST scheme of KFIST Level (2).Prof. Ruban S. has been awarded Rs. 40 lakh (for 2 years) for the
project entitled “Setting up Big Data Lab and using analytics to identify and manage high risk and high cost
patients in nearby hospitals” in November 2017
Dr Asha Abraham has completed a BRNS Major Research project entitled “Adrenergic receptor subtype
functional correlation in the brain and pancreas of high fat simple carbohydrate fed C57BL/6J mice:
Implications in metabolic syndrome” (Amount Sanctioned Rs. 29,11,060/-) in May 2017.
All the minor research projects sanctioned during earlier years have been completed and necessary reports have
been submitted to the sanctioning authorities.
10 faculty members from Science Departments identified by the Research coordinators attended Research
Based Pedagogical Tools (RBPT) training organized by the Dept. of Science and technology, Govt. of India
across India. 6 Faculty members applied for grants under various schemes of Karnataka-Fund for Infrastructure
Strengthening in Science and Technology in Higher Education Institutions (K-FIST).
Large number of students applied for Science Academy‟s Summer Research Fellowship (SRF); the results are
awaited.
One Research Laboratory is named „Prof. C. N. R. Rao – Instrumentation Lab‟, commemorating the visit of
Prof. C.N.R. Rao, Bharat Ratna Awardee.

Each UG student has to spend 40 hours of active engagement in social service during the first two
years of Bachelors Programme guided by their Mentors. Social Service for this programme would
mean getting involved in the societal issues and concerns like protecting environment; waste
Management; campaigns on health issues, substance abuse/ addiction, child rights, women‟s
rights; accompanying the specially abled persons, elderly and terminally ill; school and
Anganwadi programmes; awareness programmes and so on.
All the PG departments have Rural Exposure Programme in the First year. Various Departments
and Associations visit Old Age Homes, Tribal Camps, Orphanages, Aloysian Boys Home, St
Josephs‟ Old Age Home and remote villages of the District.
Centre for Social Concern has organizes social awareness programmes/camps on prevention of
Maleria, Solid Waste Management, „role of parents in dealing with adolescents in the rural
/backward areas.
Community Radio Sarang 107.8 FM broadcasts various programmes like VruttiSamtrupti,
ShubhaMangala, Monthly phone in programme, The regular programmes in four local languages
– Konkani, Tulu, Kannada, and Biary.
Sahodaya Organised the Cultural Fest for the Special Children on December 17, 2017. Overnight
camps at Christa Sevaki Ashram Karkala, Manasa Rehabilitation centre for the Mentally
Challenged.
On July 31, 2017 Feed the hunger programme conducted by AICUF members to beggars,
children, homelesspeople living in the streets of Mangalore.

The evaluation schedules of both internal and end semester examinations is informed to the students in
the beginning of the year through College Handbook. Timely reminders are given from time to time
through notices and public announcements.
Academic calendar is strictly adhered to. Students know in the beginning of the year itself- teaching
programmes, internal examinations, end semester examinations, Extra Curricular & Co-curricular
activities, the last working day- revision holidays, etc. It will help them to plan their studies accordingly.
It is mandatory to hold the BOS meeting in each academic year thus giving an opportunity to review the
academic content, pattern of question paper, examination system and panel of examiners.
Examination Manual has been prepared detailing examination system and all issues associated with it.

New Research Policy: The MJES has enacted and implemented a Research Policy with effect from
October 2017 to promote the research ambience, create and sustain a research culture, motivate staff
and students to engage in research activities and to provide a broad framework to guide scholarly

New Research Room: A separate research room with necessary infrastructural facilities has been set up
for the research scholars in the first floor of Administrative block.
New Research Centres: PG Departments of Chemistry and English have been recognized as the
Research Centres for Ph.D programme by Mangalore University.
Minor/Major Research Projects:
The College is having 8 ongoing Minor research projects which were sanctioned in 2015-16. Annual
reports of these projects have been submitted and the final report along with UC will be submitted by
May 2018. We have completed 28 minor research projects in 2017-18 and submitted final report along
with UC to UGC.
Under the VGST scheme of KFIST Level (2).Prof. Ruban S. has been awarded Rs. 40 lakh (for 2 years)
for the project entitled “Setting up Big Data Lab and using analytics to identify and manage high risk
and high cost patients in nearby hospitals” in November 2017
Dr Asha Abraham has completed a BRNS Major Research project entitled “Adrenergic receptor
subtype functional correlation in the brain and pancreas of high fat simple carbohydrate fed C57BL/6J
mice: Implications in metabolic syndrome” (Amount Sanctioned Rs. 29,11,060/-) in May 2017.
All the minor research projects sanctioned during earlier years have been completed and necessary
reports have been submitted to the sanctioning authorities.

Examination reforms committees have been set up as regular bodies in each academic

5 Illustrious Alumni/ae of the Institution was felicitated On March 17 2018, Eminent
Aloysian Award Ceremony is scheduled.
After the admission student, along with parents/ guardian meet the Vice Principal and the
Dean of the respective faculty to get input about the Course and the regulations of the
institution.
There is constant interaction between faculty students and parents through PTS meetings.
Regular Parent- Teacher meetings are held to update the academic, co-curricular and extra-
curricular performance and the academic progress is informed to the parents after every

Training programme is conducting when the new software is introducing in the college.
Motivation/Orientation Programme to all the Administrative staff was held on 7 July, 2017. To bring awareness among the staff, the college organized workshop on Prevention of Sexual
Harassment (POSH) and Protection of Children from Sexual Harassment (POCSO) on June 15,
2017.
Financial assistance is given to the staff through cooperative society to buy or to build a new

Department of Botany organized „Vanamahothsava‟ programme through seed balls on 28-7-2017
at 2:45pm in Botany Lab. As a preparation to this event, on 14-7-2017 the members of the
Bioscience association prepared seed balls of four different kinds of plants namely

Counselling Centre: Counselling services are provided by trained counselors.
Students with personal and academic issues those who are distracted, suffer abuse,
indulged in substance abuse and lack of goal and orientation in life are counseled. If
required they are sent to professional counselors.
Sahaaya: In order to create a sense of „social responsibility‟ among students, the college
has embarked on an innovative awareness programme called SAHAAYA to the Under
Graduate students, thereby aims at fulfilling the mission of the college of „Preparing men
and women for and with others‟. This programme demonstrates the crux of Jesuit
Education which follows the pedagogy of learning; Context- Experience-Reflection-
Action- Evaluation. Each student has to spend 40 hours of active engagement in social
service during the first two years of Bachelors Programme guided by their Mentors.
Social Service for this programme would mean getting involved in the societal issues and
concerns like protecting environment; waste Management; campaigns on health issues,
substance abuse/ addiction, child rights, women‟s rights; accompanying the specially
abled persons, elderly and terminally ill; school and Anganwadi programmes; awareness
programmes and so on.
The entire College is involved in clean green campus programme.
The Students and the staff are exposed to modern scientific methods of renewable energy
sources through various programmes, workshops and national seminars.
SARANG the community radio station of the college brings out programmes for the public
on awareness.
Gas fired Incinerators is used to dispose medical waste.
Solar Panels have been installed to generate electricity to computer labs and Solar plants
have installed in Boys home and hostels to minimize energy consumption.
College maintains a micro forest area called ALVANA with all its natural fauna and flora.

Vemiculturing and Vermicomposting hands on training is imparted to institutions, teachers,
farmers, general public to popularize green technology in and around Mangalore.
The students of Botany conducted Eco Exhibition during the fests also they were taken to

There is also Medicinal plants conservation undertaken by Botany Department.
Students have been given projects on Digital Herbaria – Flora of Campus and Dakshina
