GOS MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society is to help Georgia Orthopaedic Surgeons provide quality care and lead rewarding professional lives.
GOS VISION STATEMENT
The Georgia Orthopaedic Society will accomplish our mission statement by:
1. Offering orthopaedic surgeons educational programs on clinical and practice management topics;
2. Conducting advocacy efforts on behalf of orthopaedic surgeons and patients;
3. Providing opportunities to foster personal and professional relations among orthopaedic surgeons; and
4. Promoting the specialty of orthopaedic surgery to the general public.
MISSION STATEMENT OF THE ANNUAL MEETING
The mission of The Georgia Orthopaedic Society is to provide pertinent, quality continuing medical education for practicing orthopaedic surgeons. The annual meeting and other educational meetings of our society strive to do so by affording an opportunity for orthopaedists throughout the state to exchange ideas regarding patient care. This is done through formal and informal discussions relevant to orthopaedic issues and through scientific presentations by orthopaedists with pertinent clinical or research expertise. The result of each program of the Society is to enable orthopaedists to achieve and maintain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide patient care at optimum levels.

WELCOME TO THE 2014 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE GEORGIA ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY
D. Hal Silcox III, M.D is a native Georgian. Hal completed his undergraduate, medical school, orthopaedic residency, and spine surgery fellowship at Emory University. He started his practice at The Emory Clinic in 1992, serving on the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine. In 2001, he joined the Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic where he has been a partner since 2002. Hal now serves as President of Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic which is comprised of 35 orthopaedic surgeons and physiatrist. He continues to participate in clinical research and spine surgery product development. He has been on the board of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society for the past 6 years and has served on the Northside Hospital Orthopaedic Advisory Board. Previously, Hal served as a physician for the Atlanta Olympic Games, a surgeon/consultant for the Atlanta Hawks, a coach for North Atlanta Youth Organization, as well as Boy Scout leader.
His wife of 24 years,Deborah, is an attorney. They have two children, Elizabeth, 20, and Hal IV, 17.
Jim Barber, MD , was born in Augusta, GA and attended Dunwoody High School. He graduated from Georgia Tech in Computer Science, then attended Medical College of Georgia, graduating in 1993. Upon completing orthopaedic residency at Georgia Baptist (Atlanta Medical Center), he began private practice in general orthopaedics in Douglas, GA. He married Douglas native Jessica and they are raising three wonderful girls: Emma (age 11), Amelia (age 8), and Clara (age 4). His family enjoys the beach, sailing, and church.
Jim is the current GOS Secretary/Treasurer, and has served previously as member-at-large and public relations chairman. He is a graduate of the Georgia Physicians Leadership Academy, AAOS Leadership Fellows Program, and Leadership Georgia 2011. He is currently President of Coffee County Medical Society, Vice President of South Georgia Physicians Association, Chairman of Georgia Medical PAC (GAMPAC), chairman of AAOS Social Networking group, and serves on the board of directors of the Medical Association of Georgia (MAG), and Georgia Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Vaccaro graduated Summa Cum Laude
from Boston College in 1983 with a B.S.
in Biology. He received his M.D. degree
from Georgetown University School of Medicine where he
was promoted with “Distinction” He earned membership
in the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society and
graduated with honors in 1987. He completed a year of
Surgical Internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los
Angeles, CA and his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency was
at Thomas Jefferson University where he graduated in 1992.
Dr. Vaccaro completed a Spine Fellowship at the University
of San Diego, CA. He earned a PhD in 2007 in the field of
Spinal Trauma.
Dr. Vaccaro is the Everrett J. and Marion Gordon Professor
of Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor of Neurosurgery at
Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was the recipient of the Leon Wiltse award given
for excellence in leadership and clinical
research for spine care by the North
American Spine Society (NASS) and is the
past President of the American Spinal Injury Association
and current President of the Association for Collaborative
Spine Research
He has over 530 peer reviewed and 195 non-peer reviewed
publications. He has published over 300 book chapters
and is the editor of over 44 textbooks and co-editor of
OKU-Spine I and editor of OKU-8. Dr. Vaccaro is Vice
Chairman of the department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Co-
Director of the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the
Delaware Valley and Co-Director of Spine Surgery and the
Spine Fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital where he instructs current fellows and residents
in the diagnosis and treatment of various spinal problems
and disorders.

JAMES SCOTT, MD
Dr. James W. Scott is a 1968 Cum Laude graduate of the University of Georgia. He received his medical degree in 1972 from the Medical College of Georgia where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He attended Tulane University School of Medicine from 1973 to 1977. Following his post graduate work, he served a six-month residency at UCLA and a six-month residency with Dr. Jim Andrews and Dr. Jack Hughston at the Hughston Orthopedic Clinic.
In 1983, Dr. Scott founded Georgia Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Clinic.
He founded American Surgeons for Central America in 1992, and in 1999 he founded FUNDAORTO Guatemala. He frequently travels to Guatemala and El Salvador to donate his professional services to those countries’ under-served patients.
