Summer's Almost Here, Anchors!

I

hope you had a productive and wonderful school year. I’m sure you’re excited

about the fun of summer approaching. Please allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Jennifer Whitehead, and I am the new Anchor Specialist at Pilot

International Headquarters. I live on a small piece of farmland and enjoy garden-

ing and love animals. I have been happily married for 13 years and have three

children, 11 year-old twins and a 7 year-old. I can’t wait to learn more about you!

I am so excited to be a part of such an amazing group of young people who are

not just sitting around talking, but taking action in their communities. You are

amazing!

A

s the excitement of summer approaches, we are busy preparing for

this year’s Second Annual 2014 Anchor Leadership Summit – JUST FOR

ANCHORS! We hope you can join us for this wonderful experience in Chi-

cago, with guest speaker Jacqueline Cornaby, education and leadership seminars,

fun hands-on service projects, the presentation of 2014 Anchor Awards, Cultural

Exchange, and More! This is a great opportunity for our anchors to spend time

with each other as well as Pilot Clubs from around the globe.

B

ecause we at PIHQ believe this leadership summit, held in conjunction with the PI Conference, is an enriching and

enlightening experience for our bright young anchors, we ask that each club

consider sponsoring at least one anchor, covering their registration fee in or-

der to help them attend this year’s Conference. This is an wonderful opportunity

to help lead and encourage these amazing young people. For more information

about the 2014 Anchor Leadership Summit or for any Anchor questions or con-

cerns, please contact us at [email protected], or email me directly at jennifer@

Anchors are Amazing People!

Anchors give of themselves each and every day and joyfully answer the call to serve, whenever or wherever it comes. In all four corners of the globe, Anchors are hard at work not only doing the good deeds of Anchor Clubs but also lead-

ing outstanding individual lives.

Anchors are Unique Individuals! Each member brings his or her own set of skills and experiences and offers their special talents to the benefit of their club and their community at large. Without a doubt, Anchor club members are out there right now making outstanding and lasting contributions, leading lives of distinction that deserve recognition. Every Anchor is special. And every one of you is vital to our organization.

We want to share their stories!

Outstanding Anchors from around the globe will be honored in quarterly in upcoming editions of The Pilot Log or online monthly on the Pilot International Website. What makes a member “Outstanding?” That is for YOU to decide! Do you have a special member in your club who leads the kind of life you believe would inspire others? Does that person contribute to his or her society outside of the club in a way you feel is especially important? Do you have a member in your club with a unique talent or someone who has made a name for themselves in a singular and positive way outside of their work with Anchor? Then tell us!

To nominate a club member as an Outstanding Anchor, write to us and tell us in 500 words or less why you think your nominee should be honored. To submit your entry (with photographs of your nominee if possible), please visit the I’m An Anchor > Outstanding Anchor page on the Pilot International Website or email Alison Coons, Director of Communications and Editor of the Pilot Log, at [email protected]. If you do not have access to email, please mail your story to Alison Coons at Pilot International Headquarters, 102 Preston Court, Macon, GA 31210 or send via fax to (478) 477-6978. Submis-sions will be reviewed and selections made by the Pilot International Executive Committee. We want to hear from you!

Alexandra Trisan was installed as char-

ter president of the Anchor Club of

St. Joseph Academy. On May 6, 2014,

chartering ceremonies were conduct-

ed at the school by Rene Naughton, a

past governor of the Florida District

of Pilot International and a past presi-

dent of the Pilot Club of St. Augustine, sponsoring organization of the SJA club. Seventeen young women and

men signed the charter during the ceremony. Other officers include Cynthia Hund, vice president; Cornelia

Wielgus, secretary; Kunfang Li, treasurer; and Hannah Pierle, chaplain. Jeri Williar is sponsor. Also attending

the ceremony was Sister Suzan Foster, assistant SJA principal. She was joined by parents of the charter mem-

bers and Pilot Club members Kay Burtin, current president; Sara Hetherington, Anne Heymen, past presidents;

and Lucille Barnhill, board member. Among the first service projects the new St. Joseph Academy Anchors

will be assisting with is the Memorial Weekend Pilot project where American flags are placed in front of the

Lightner Building to honor individuals who have served in our armed forces. Names of the honorees are placed

on flags which will be displayed from May 24 until early May 27. All branches of the service will be included.

Congratulations, St. Joseph Academy Anchors! We are proud of YOU!

The Cultural Exchange is an exciting event held

each year during the Anchor Leadership Summit.

Anchors look forward to the Cultural Exchange

where they are able to share different things about

their District and also learn about the other Dis-

tricts being represented.

Similar to a Science Fair, Anchors are encouraged

to bring a presentation board and items from their

District to share with everyone else. In the past

we have had such items as food, drinks, candy,

fruit, toys, sea shells, beach sand, music, pictures,

dances, clothing and souvenirs of all kinds from ev-

ery district represented. Some displays are elabo-

rate with many things to see and some are not - it

can be whatever the Anchor wants to share.

Each Anchor is given about 10 minutes to share

what they have brought and what information

they may want to explain. We have had history

lessons, food facts, learned about the fun spots

to visit, tasted all kinds of food, watched special

dances, learned about famous (or not so famous)

people and seen different clothing attire - all to

explain the many Districts. After the speeches

are complete, everyone is free to walk around and

look at the displays up close and ask questions.

Many times the Anchors will bring enough items

to share with the other Anchors, so everyone gets

a treat from the different areas to take home.

Anchors, now is the time to make your plans for

what you want to share. What is most special to

you about your District? What places do you feel

are the most fun to visit and why? What items

can you bring with you to share and give away?

Make your display as big or small as you want, just

make sure you have room in your suitcase! The

Cultural Exchange will be open to all Pilots and

Navigators again this year, so we hope to have

many join us for this exciting Annual Event hosted

by the International Anchors.
