Washington Crossing the Delaware

Painted by Emanuel Leutze, 1851

• During the night of December 25, 1776, U.S. General George Washington led his troops across the ice-swollen Delaware about 9 miles north of Trenton. To add to the difficulties, a significant number of Washington's force marched through the snow without shoes!

• The next morning they attacked to the south, taking the Hessian garrison by surprise and over-running the town. After fierce fighting, and the loss of their commander, the Hessians surrendered at Trenton.

• The news of the American victory spread rapidly through the colonies reinvigorating the failing spirit of the Revolution.

Warm Up:

• PICTURE 1 PICTURE 2

• What problems are shown facing the soldiers camped at Valley Forge? What other problems might they have faced that are not shown? How do you think the British army's experience in Philadelphia compared with the Americans' experience? For picture 2, compare the style of dress of the congressmen and the soldiers, and brainstorm what Washington might have been saying to the congressmen.

Washington’s Headaches

Only 1/3 of the colonists were in favor of a war for independence [the other third were Loyalists, and the final third were neutral].

State/colony loyalties.

Congress couldn’t tax to raise money for the Continental Army.

Poor training [until the arrival of Baron von Steuben.

Video: “Valley Forge” (50 M.)

Chronicles the American

Continental Army's stay at

valley forge, Pennsylvania,

during the harsh winter of

1777–1778, and reveals how

George Washington's

strategic dealings with

Congress and Friedrich

Wilhelm von Steuben's

intensive training camp for the

soldiers changed the course

of the American Revolution.

An archaeological study at the

site of the Battle of Monmouth

illustrates how key

improvements in American

combat tactics shifted the

war's favor from the British to

the American army.

Pay attention!!! Your assignment follows!

Britain thought that there were more Loyalists in the South.

Southern resources were more valuable/worth preserving.

The British win a number of small victories, but cannot pacify the countryside [similar to U. S. failures in Vietnam!]
