The American Revolution"The question was never the immediate amount of taxation

that the British were asking of the colonists. The question was whether the British had the right to do it at all.”

Page 10: The American Revolution

The last person said to die in the battles of Lexington and Concord was not a Minuteman or a Redcoat—but a teenage boy. As the British fought their way back from Concord to Boston, they passed through Charlestown, the home of 14-year old Edward Barber. Barber rushed to his window to watch the fighting. By this time, British troops had endured several hit-and-run attacks from colonists. As a result they considered anyone moving in a house to be a possible sniper. A British soldier aimed his musket at the Barber home and killed young Edward with one shot.

Battle of Saratoga

• The surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga turned the tide of the war in favor of the American colonists/rebels.

• Now that Burgoyne's army is defeated, France will help the Americans fight England.

• In comes the French alliance, the French troops, and, what was of far more importance, a French fleet by which Washington was finally able to get control of the sea…which we will look at in more detail tomorrow!

DNA: Read This..then remain quiet.• The difficulties between the colonists and the British Government seemed to

threaten the Indian way of life. The Cherokee wondered what they should do. Should they stay neutral? Was it even possible to stay neutral? Should they side with the British, who promised them weapons? Or should they side with the patriots, who promised them weapons but also kept taking their ancestral lands?

• Colonists on North Carolina’s western frontier wanted to continue expanding westward, and these colonists resented British attempts to keep them out of Cherokee lands. The Cherokee knew that they would be pushed out of the way if the colonists won their war for independence. The Cherokee therefore sided with the British, and in the summer of 1776 they attacked white settlers along the frontier.

• In response, North Carolina colonists attacked Cherokee villages. They burned villages and destroyed crops and food supplies. White settlers and the Cherokee hated each other, and their resentment now turned into barbaric violence. We’ve seen resentment turn to brutality before, and, unfortunately, we’ll see it again.

The Patriot• The Continental-American Army faces off against the British in the

Battle of Cowpens. During the skirmish, after learning from Cornwallis' journal that the General has "no respect for the militia whatsoever," Benjamin and the militia contrive to lure the British into a trap, where Continentals are waiting to charge the British. Even though Benjamin spots Tavington several times on the battlefield, he sticks to his primary duty to the Continentals, who are slowly losing their morale and are retreating, by raising a revolutionary flag up high and rallying them. The American forces push forward, gradually overwhelming the British. Then Benjamin meets Tavington in a vicious duel.
