When Michael Shollyasked me to writ e

i the editorial for th elast edition of theAmateur Footballerfor 2006, t was

indeed grateful for the opportunity todo so, as it gives me the chance to record myappreciation to the VAFA community for thefaith it placed in me for allowing me to be itsPresident for the last 3 years .

When I was approached in 1994 to become amember of the VAFA Executive, I had had aninvolvement with amateur football since 1964 asa player and then as an umpire (when the legsgave up) . Becoming Chairman and thenPresident of such a large and well respectedorganization was the furthest thought from mymind . I was happy to give something back to abody that had given me much enjoyment, andwhich had allowed me to remain involved wellbeyond my use-by date . To have actuallybecome Chairman and then President wasindeed a great honor, particularly when youconsider the achievements and record of thosewho have gone before me .

In recent times, Australian football has beenunder challenge, from other sports from withoutand from within in the way the game issometimes played, particularly at AFL level .Financial pressures are placed on leagueadministrations and upon clubs, and itbecomes, in many instances, a matter of sheersurvival . I am most gratified that the VAFA is notmerely just holding its own, but continues to

become stronger as the years go by. There is nodoubt that this is due to the hard work of allinvolved with the VAFA, at all levels - Executive,VAFA staff, club administrators, volunteers, supporters and last but not least, the playersand the umpires . It is a partnership of all theseelements, with a common goal of providing andplaying good and enjoyable football, that makesthe VAFA the predominant football association,at least in Victoria . The VAFA will continue tothrive while we have people at all levels of theorganization who are prepared to give selflesslyof their time and energy .

The standard of football at all levels in the VAFAcontinues to impress all those who see it . Thiswas evidenced in the various Grand Finals thatwere played last weekend and congratulationsto the winners . I had the privilege to witnessone of the best ever games of amateur footballat Sandringham between St Bedes/Mentone andAjax - a game worthy of an A Grade final .

Amateur football is in great shape if we can havegames like this played before enthusiastic andappreciative crowds .

I have now been President for 3 years, and Ithink that, generally, is long enough for anybodyto be in that position . I wish to record mythanks to all involved with the VAFA for theirfriendship and assistance . In particular, I wouldlike to record my appreciation to the VAFA staffwhose efforts anddedication tendsometimes to gounnoticed .

The air-ship sailed above Elsternwick Park, the Royalair-force entertained us with aerial party tricks an dthe masters of September football, Old Xaverians ,put on a show last Sunday.I sat on the far wing with football writer Paul Daffey.Football legend Tom Hafey was sitting on the grassnot too far away from us . Given that Xav's coachBarry Richardson kicked five for Tommy inRichmond's 1974 VFL premiership win, I presumedhe was in the Xavs' corner. Football bonds are strongand last a long time and I kept thinking Tommy wasnot a bad bloke to have on your side .The day was warm, so was the atmosphere and thefooty was hot.As I walked passed the goals I bumped into an oldteam-mate of mine . We also have a bond .We had played in premierships together in clubfootball and he went on to play in multiplepremierships during Xavs reign in the 90's .When we spoke I briefly thought about that timewhen I played with a handful Xavier boys .The team was coached by a Xavs man as well and hedidn't like losing . As a consequence, we didn't lose .In fact, we never lost . The closest anyone got to uswas ten goals and that was in a grand final .Eventually we were banned from the league .It was back then when I started to understand theethos of Xavier football and what made Xavier footypeople tick. They are close, they form tight, strongbonds, they strive for excellence and they play towin .They would flatten us in school footy because myschool team did not create those bonds, did not havethat ethos .And over the past 11 years the Old Xaverians havebeen busy flattening everyone in the VAFA .As Xav's play for their 10th A-section flag thisweekend since 1995, Old Haileybury plays for its firstin A-section .Their stories are contrasting but the coach of theBloods, Peter Nicholson, has an extraordinaryfootball record and it seems to me he also has thatdrive, like the Xavier people .

0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

There is an energy abouthis Haileybury team thatI like and it is an energythat wins flags . An dNicholson knows how t owin flags. He did it with St . Bernard's and he did it inthe VFL as well .Sunday's game will be a cracker and the B-sectiongrand final should also be a beauty . The two bestteams from B-section will play each other for thirdtime in four weeks . Don't miss it .Old Brighton is yet to beat the Lions this year butthey led at three-quarter time in their last encounterand they know if they play four quarters of their bestfootball they can force the upset .So it comes down to this .Because of the absence of AFL over the pastfortnight, local football has moved into the spotlightand the VAFA has stepped up to the plate and servedup some rip-snorting games .Last weekend, quite simply, was stunning and it allstarted with a thrilling C-section grand final withSt .Bedes Mentone Tigers storming home from eightgoals down to steal a one-point win against Ajax .In D3 reserve there was also a one-point thriller inthe grand final between Kew and Monash Gryphons. In other grand finals, Old Carey won convincingly inD1, Oakleigh won D2, South Melbourne Districtswon D3 after losing the second semi and thePowerhouse won D4 .Premierships are time to savour. You will rememberyour team-mates and coaches for the rest of yourlife . The bonds you form with these people lastforever. Enjoy it .

Deep

They have a list brimming with big names . A 300 game+AFL player (Loewe) regarded as one of the best marksin the history of the game . A five-time SANFLpremiership player (Hopwood), twice best on ground ina grand final and captain of his state side . A VAFA statecaptain and highly regarded former Geelong midfielder(Corrigan) . His best mate (Steinfort), himself anaccomplished player at Geelong and Collingwood withextensive AFL finals experience . Three stars from theVFL (Trollope, Ford & Brewer) who have collectedswags of flags and individual honours . A Woodrowmedallist (Jenke), an All Australian Under 23 player(Chisholm), best and fairest winners (Langford-Jones,Corrigan), you name it.

But nt ' _

They have Mark Seccull, a 38 year old (!) in sensationalnick who could well prove a match-up nightmare for hisopponents . A player who will undoubtedly be the storyof the day if Haileybury are to get up . A player who camethrough the school, played in California (as you do) andreturned to Amateur footy at the age of 35 looking as fitas an 18 year old .

But no A S

They probably have the strongest school feeder systemin the country, whose recent alumni, like Chisholm andMohammad, have slotted into senior football withaplomb . Several years ago, the school decided (much asmy old school Caulfield did with athletics a few decadesearlier) that footy was going to be their thing . Theysnared Stewart Loewe as coach and enticed some of thebest talent in the State to the Keysborough . Three flagsin as many years was the result .

But still, n i

They boast one of the largest supporter bases in theAmateurs, have an innovative membership program, sponsors galore and a recruiting network that is secondto none . There is no doubt that their supporters will bein the majority today. There's even talk of busloads ofthem making the trip from the Badlands to the 'Wick .

Big bus, but no -

They have a coach woo polarises opinion like no otherVAFA figure ( with apologies to Scott Mallard!) . A man

who snared two flags atBox Hill, another at EastBurwood in the EFL,two more at Springvalein the VFL, led StBernards to their firstpennant in almost twodecades and took the Badlanders to successive minorpremierships. An intense man, not averse to sledgingopposition stars and umpires . Indeed, sometimes Ireckon that if I were an umpire, I'd leap the fence anddeck Nicko! His coaching record aside, Nicholson has aremarkable report with his chargers ; he is very much aplayers' coach . You'll never hear a bad word about himfrom anyone at Springvale, Bernards or Haileybury .

But alas, no A Section fla g

The other mob, however, aren't light on for A Sectionflags . Tim Ockleshaw, one of the best VAFA footballersof recent times, has six of them . Indeed, if you count hisschool, Under 19 and even BARFL flags, you run out offingers . Of the others, Simon Lethlean (5), Scott Mallard(3), Tim Fleming (2), Andrew Bowen (2), Sam Johnston(2), Andrew Oswald (2), Ted Woodruff (2) and JamesScanlon (2) have all won multiple A Grade pennants .

Only Chris Santalucia, Ben Hackett . Matt Handley andMark Graham are yet to break their VAFA ducks .

Xaverians go into this game in familiar territory ; animprobable Preliminary final win, injury clouds, lots ofdoubt, an imposing opposition . Last Sunday, theylooked to be in big trouble, until Barry Richardson madean inspired three-quarter-time speech that made MikeMcArthur-Allen look like Jeff Fenech . Or WarwickCapper. Today he needs to take his conjuring skills tonew levels . Does he use Lynch, who pretty much wonem the game last week up forward, down back on

Stewart Loewe like he did in the 2nd Semi? How doeshe offset the likely loss of Adam Chatfield, who carvedup last year's OF, as well as the doubts hanging over TimFleming and Nathan Bingham? Does he trust Hackettand Woodruff with the jobs on the Haileybury tallforwards? Or does he pull a smoky and pluck one of thebeanpoles from the reserves? Conversely, does he optfor John Pasceri, the pocket rocket fringe player (albeita very good one!) who was squeezed out at the eleventhhour last year? Like many who've been watching themfor years, nothing would surprise me any more aboutOld Xavs . A win today would be no more of a turn-upthan their flag in 2000, when St Bernards were hot totrot, in '96, when they turned at the clubhouse in therelegation zone, or last year, when they ground themuch touted Uni Blues into the turf . Suffice to say, ifthey get=up today, they will usurp Vermont (EFL) as themost successful local footy side in the state .

It's hard to imagine anything topping what we saw atSandringham last Saturday and at Sportscover (and, forthat matter, at Preston) on Sunday. But this gamepromises so much . I'll tip Haileybury by 5 points, for allthe reasons mentioned earlier, for their superior heightand for the prevailing feeling around amateur circles thatthis is their year.

But like anyone who flirts with VAFA history and goesagainst Xaverians, I do so with considerabletrepidation . . .

Congratulations to Michael Dickerson, Peter Gadsden,Greg McLaughlin and all the players and officials onyour win on Saturday and the promotion back to AGrade that goes with it . A great way to bounce backinto form after the disappointments of the previousfortnight, to set up a huge Grand Final . Also to SeanFlaherty, Darren Handley, Lord Farquar and all at OEGcommiserations .

REVIEWPRELIMINARY FINA LThe last sign off for 2006 and what a way to go withthe Bombers nosediving in spectacular fashion toprove the Jekyll and Hyde tag is perhaps well earnt. The Bombers started brilliantly and had three goals onthe board before the Tonners woke up and it tooksome brilliant work from little Tommy Jakobi and anastonishing goal from Adam Pirrie to get them back inthe game . The game ebbed and flowed in the first half, with neither side being able to break clear first oneruckman then the other one took control, as both sidesran hard, hit targets and kicked some good goals .The game broke open in no uncertain terms after thebreak with Old Brighton taking total control booting 17goals to 6 to set their return to A section up indramatic fashion . It all started in the ruck from TobyEwart and Andrew Morley, and then John Perrett, ChrisTolj, Cal Buckley, and Blair Mason cut the Bombers tobits . David Dawes took over and was everywhere inthis second term as the Bombers just dropped off .Scott Ginnavin and the Edges led the defence as theboys returned to the rooms with plenty of confidenceand a feeling that the job was only half done .Old Essendon despite the disappointment had a prettygood year and made plenty of progress blooding somefine young players . Jordan Leask was again their best, well supported by Velardo, Flaherty and Clifton . OEGnow have 6 months to return and go again .

PREVIEWGRAND FINAI.A fitting result will see the two best sides of the yearplay off in the game of the year. With promotionsecured for their clubs today is player's day . Enjoy itand don't get too stressed after all in the end it is justanother game of football .Collegians will have enjoyed the break and watched theother two slug it out and go into the game full of spiri t

10

and back in good touchand have the bigadvantage of beatingthe Tonners fairlyeasily in their last twoencounters, but this counts for nothing today as it isthe team who gets rid of the nerves and becomesfocussed earlier who will win .I have admired both sides' performances throughoutthe year and find it really hard to pick between themon such a big day but you must favour Collegians whohave beaten their opponents 3 times in 20 weeks butthe law of averages certainly could favour OldBrighton . Will go with Collegians just . Good luck to all .

PRESS CORRESPONDENT SA special thanks to Chris Pollock, Andy Mullett andJohn Newbold for your detailed reports through theyear it is much appreciated and has made my jobmuch easier. Enjoy your summer.

Never, in the field of VAFA footy, have so manypeople flocked to such a brilliant game of footy, played by so few . This, ladies and gentlemen, was a match which truly befi tted the word Grandand, as the showpiece teams of C section, StBedes Mentone Tigers and the AJAX AFC are tobe commended for the manner in which theyfought out the flag .

Two weeks ago, 6 points separated the sideswhen everyone stopped for breath, exhausted, with nothing left to give . Whilst it was a classic2nd semi, and many considered it the upset ofthe entire VAFA season, but few could havepredicted the manner in which the return battlewould be fought . To the victors go the spoils, andit was good to see the Tigers' reserves side andU19s also taking the flags in their respectivecompetitions . However, AJAX AFC should beextremely proud of the way they played theirfinals series, they certainly exceeded everyone'sexpectations bar their own, and will look to nextseason in B grade with much confidence .

Now to the game of the year . . . . . .

This match commenced and concluded inbaffling circumstances with James Tyquin sentoff before the first bounce, leaving the Tigersplaying the vital first 15 minutes with only 17players . To their credit, the Tigers were level withthe Jackas when the extra man returned, at 3goals apiece . As you would expect, the pace andintensity around the ground was enormous, andthe men in white certainly had their hands fullfrom the start! !

Some undisciplined play by the Tigers giftedAJAX some opportunities to establish a lead andthe straight kicking of Aarom Bloom and YaronRappaport saw a 22 lead at the first change .

AJAX continued on their merry way in the 2ndterm, with Rittermann, Lewski and Israelsohndominant around the packs and out-running theiropponents to most contests . Elliot Janover was

16

outstanding andNick Gold's ball usewas superb, as theJackas owned th ecorridor and pushed --_--_ --____:their lead out to 8goals with 10 minutes before half time . Not manysides in the VAFA would be a chance to recoverfrom such a deficit on the biggest day of the year, but primarily through Nick Corda and AndrewHayes, the Tigers kicked the last 4 goals of theterm . With an unfo rt unate hammy strain reducingthe Jackas key defensive options, the Tigers hadgood reason for optimism, and hit the shedstrailing by 22 points again .

The third term was a stunner, with the first coupleof goals going to the Tigers, and the marginreduced to "legs 11" . Luke Terrill's marking andconversion up forward sparked his team-matesand Sam Anstey, Michael (Rittermann Medallist)Wintle and Tim McColl were the engine roomoperators who started to fire . The Jackas were onthe back foot by now and had to stem the tide ,

lest they be blown away. When the Tigers hit thefront, the crowd went mad, but the Jackassupporters (all 2,000+ of them) willed their teamback into the lead at the final change . AJAX by 5points .

If the 3rd term was tidy, the final one was a belteras both sides threw everything they could at eachother. Nick Gold twisted a knee and was carriedoff which robbed the Jackas of some inspiration .The Tigers could smell a premiership and, withLuke Beveridge and Steve Zakic holding firmdown back, the cards looked like falling their way.The Tigers started to really throw their bodiesaround, taking a few Jackas boys in the process .Goals to Collins and Corda were answered byRappaport, However, the Tigers drew level afterPaul Groves stayed on "terra firma" whilsteveryone else leapt into the sky and the balllanded in his lap for the leveller. The minutesticked into seconds and the Tigers surged forwardto register the most important point of theirseason . After that, the Tigers defence were able tohang onto the pill for long enough to run down theclock .

When the final siren sounded, many Tigers fansjumped the fence even though play hadn'tstopped . Fortunately, this wasn't a repeat of theLaunceston AFL debacle, and the sight of the Ajaxplayer collapsing to his knees with the ball in handwill be indelibly imprinted on my mind for a longtime to come .

: . I CGDD S

As expected, the strongest C reserve outfit youwould ever see took the chocolates in the curtain-raiser, with the OC putting up a game effort, butbeing outclassed comfortably by a talented Tigerunit .

As the dust settled from Saturday's game it wasnoted by a number of people how well the matchand the day was conducted by the VAFA and bothclubs asked that I acknowledge the fantasticassistance that they received from Tommy Brainand his helpers . They also would like to pass ontheir thanks to the people from Sandy and inparticular the clubhouse manager who could nothave been more helpful . It was a fantastic day allaround .

Now we only have to wait another 7 months for itall to start again!

In sunny wet _~A;,r with no notable breeze tospeak of, conditions were perfect at PrestonCity Oval for both Old Carey and Rupertswoodto display their optimum level of skill andtalent . Rupo opened by scoring the first goal ofthe day, at the Cramer Street end . Despite this,Carey started the stronger, opening up a twogoal break before Rupo hit back with the lasttwo goals of the term, to trail at the openingbreak by only two points . Rupertswood skipperDave Collins had left the field early in the gamewith what looked like a rib or chest injury, buthis team-mate looked to be coping OK withouthim .In a low-scoring second quarter, the Panthersscored three of the four goals in total, to take ahandy, but by no means g -breaking lead of17 points into half time . I' ;° am here on inthat the minor premie7 _- '._ '< ;ri to take controlof the match, with Steve C_Ilins finding the ballwherever he went and the combination ofLaurence Basell and Peter Unkles controllingthe ball in the ruck contests . An amusing sideline was theappearance of a male streaker. Fun for theladies, I'm sure, but disappointing for the lads .Stephen Collins capped off a remarkable game, and indeed a remarkable fortnight, kicking sixgoals and being awarded the J X MantonMedal for best afield, going nicely with his L .S .Pepper Medal and his premiership medal . For Rupo, Matt Quigley continuedhis goal-den run with another four goals, whileboth Phillips boys were amongst their bestplayers .In the early game, Old Mentonians upset theapplecart, turning over the previouslyundefeated Old Geelong combination by 30points . The Panthers had come from the firstsemi-final to achieve this, so to take the flagagainst a team that had a'goose-egg' in theloss column is particularly impressive . SEASOIn summary, the season panned out by and largeto my expectations, with perhaps the notableexceptions being Yarra Valley's surprise charge tothe finals (after I had expected them to struggle),and Prahran's brush with relegation (when Ithought they would've challenged for promotion) .Old Carey predictably were seen by many to beflag favourites pre-season, and duly delivered .They had several of the best players in thesection, and while some may feel they wereunder-represented in the Team of the Yearselection, perhaps that should be looked at as areflection of their overall team balance - a goodspread of players, without having to rely on justone or two standouts . Could be a finalscontender, especially given the experience inhigher grades of the likes of Al Parton and SteveCollins .Rupertswood didn't surprise me by reachingfinals, but certainly did when they reached theGrand Final . A skilful, running team, they alsohave a multi-pronged attack which makes lifedifficult for opposition defences . More unchartedterritory next year in C Section, but if this seasonis any indication, they will be more than a handfulfor quite a few teams .Old Geelong, Yarra Valley Old Boys, and BulleenTemplestowe all finished on 12-6, the former twofilling third and fourth positions in the post-finalsladder, while the Bullants' misfortune has beenwell documented . All three can be considered tobe challengers in 2007 .Old Mentonians and Therry Penola had theirmoments during 2006, but were unable to sustaintheir best form consistently over 18 rounds . A bitof retooling may see them pushing for finals nextyear, but their chances may depend on thoseabove them .Prahran's second half form was encouraging afterbeing winless through the first nine rounds, so itwill be interesting to see which Prahran we seemore of in 2007 - they could shape as a wildcard .St. Leo's Emmaus and Banyule drop down to D2next season . The Animals were probably a tadunlucky, but in the end couldn't get the necessaryresults . They may challenge for finals and/orpromotion next year, especially if they keep theirbest players . Banyule have suffered a couple of

relegations in recent seasons, and may well haveconsolidation as their aim in 2007 . However, apiece of savvy recruiting could see them givingfinals a shake, particularly if they can recapturethe form they showed in bits and pieces earlier inthe season .

Thanks to everyone who had submitted anymatch reports, milestone information, etc . duringthe 2006 season . In particular, I would like toacknowledge the following for their regularcontributions during the season : Duncan Palmerand Chris Angus ; Alexander Southey ; Steve Grey;Rick Pearce and Simon Fuller; AndrewMcCormack ; Tony Crotty ; and Rob Young and CliffPeel . Some of you will be in different sectionsnext year, so keep up your good work for myfellow scribes in those sections . As for me, I'llcontinue working on my bon mots, puns, badinage, Bermanisms, etc . . . .maybe evenappearing at the Belgian Beer Cafe performing afew Jacques Brel chansons !Enjoy your off season and your pre-season (well, maybe not the pre-season . . . .), and hopefully I'llsee you in 2007 .

OAKLEIGH REIGN SUPREMEOakleigh jumped out of the blocks against Peninsula and led b y31 points at the first change . Danny Zula was giving his on-bailer sfirst use of the ball in the ruck and Jon Rutter, Mick Harold an dDavid Counihan were getting the ball to their forwards quickly .Peninsula were second in for the ball and were really struggling toget it past their half forward line. The second term was much the same with the Krushers piling onseven goals to two to take a 59 point lead into the main break . TheGrand Final was already over. Rutter was too quick for hisopponents on ball and Trevor Bromley was floating around theground doing as he liked .Another seven goal third term saw the Oakleigh supporters startto celebrate. An 83 point three quarter time lead, promotion to D1next season and a premiership .Peninsula got some respectability back into the scoreline in thelast term booting six goals to three, but as we all know in GrandFinals, it doesn't matter if you win by one point or one hundredpoints . In the end it was 66 points.Oakleigh had a host of good players . Trevor Bromley was awardedthe A .R Fellows medal, but I am sure he won't mind me sayingthat it could have been awarded to anyone of about six or sevenplayers .Jon Rutter, Ashley Kitts, David Counihan and Shane Collins all hadgreat games for the Krushers, and it truly was a great team effort .

For Peninsula, ShaunPayze was held goalless(first time for a while),whilst Cade Bannister andTim Madder tried hard . Stillfor Peninsula, it hasn't been a wasted season with promotionto D1, and more challenges to come in 2007 .

RESSIES REPOR TThe folk down at La Trobe were all over the $2 .70 that was onoffer for them to beat Salesian last Sunday and full credit tothem . They proved me wrong and defeated Salesian by 24points .Due to a bad hangover l didn't make it down in time to watchthe ressies but according to all reports, the boys fromBundoora had too much leg speed for Salesian and fullydeserved their win .Interesting to note that while La Trobe reserves won the GrandFinal, their club was relegated from D2 to 03 . What price doesa club pay for winning a flag? Is short term success moreimportant than the long term future of a club? These are someinteresting points we can ponder during the summer.I have enjoyed the 2006 footy season, and am already lookingforward to 2007 .

Vale GusThe St Bernard's amateurfootball family records thepassing of Life Member andone of its greatest sons . 'Gus'Mitchell died suddenly after anillness on Saturday 16th ofSeptember 2006. A shortexamination of his amateurcareer reveals that he played100 senior games, won a bestand fairest award, served a yea ras captain and began coaching in 1968 when he tookthe U/19's to a pennant. He moved on to coach thesenior team from 1970-79 . This stint saw the clubachieve its first 'A' grade premiership in 1975 . In 1976he became coach of the Victorian AmateurRepresentative Team .

He followed these achievements by working for 2 yearsunder Kevin Sheedy as a forward scout and then 3years at Fitzroy as Chairman of Selectors under RobertShaw. Understandably his wealth and knowledge cannever be replaced .Above all else 'Gus' was about family . He was atvarious times a dutiful son, a loving husband to Paula,a devoted father to Sophie, Nicholas, Jane and Sarahand most recently a doting grandfather to a growinglist of grandchildren . He also served our community asChairman of the School Board and in a number ofother roles .Above all, Gus was a confidante and a friend to all whoknew him . He will always remain in our memories forhis achievements and in our hearts for his friendship .Our sympathies to Paula and his entire family. Hislegacy will never fade .

® Amateur Football Still aDraft Pathway

With all pundits tipping that this year's AFL Draft isgoing to be one of the best ever, Amateur Footballersaccording to some insiders have been high onpotential recruiters' lists . Some of the names thrownup as potential draftees this year include Brett Collins(St Bedes/Mentone Tigers), Stefan Martin (OldHaileybury), Tom Chisholm (Old Haileybury), MatthewHandley (Old Xaverians) and Dominic Dunne(Mazenod) . Brett Collins, who was a key player for St

Bedes/Mentone Tigers' exciting 1 point win in the Csection Grand Final last weekend, has been invited toplay for Victoria against the Allies in the AFL Draftmatch at MC Labour Park next week . Brett is one ofthe few players outside the TAC Cup to be selected toplay. He will also attend the Victorian draft camp laterin the year. It is great to see recruiters keeping theireye on VAFA talent and I know a number of clubs hadrepresentatives at all VAFA representative matchesthis year . Amateur Football is and always will be afantastic pathway for those with ambitions of playingfootball at the highest level they can, whether that berepresenting Victoria as an Amateur or being draftedto an AFL club . With that also is the fact that you don'tnecessarily have to play A Section to get noticed, asBrett and Dominic can attest to .

® l a .- o --_kend at Bulleen .3~ _ _- 3towe

There has been a roller-coaster of emotions atBulleen-Templestowe over the last couple of weeks .Firstly, their seniors were knocked out of finalscontention in spectacular fashion in Round 18 byRupertswood and their Reserves lost their last twomatches to miss out on the finals . Since thatdisappointment, the club has had nothing butpositive results . Their U19 side finished third on theladder and won their way through to a Grand Finalshowdown with Fitzroy Reds . After being 66 pointsdown at three-quarter time, it looked as though moredisappointment was coming the way of the boys fromTed Ajani Reserve . Then in a remarkable turn ofevents, Bulleen-Temp kicked 10 goals 8 points toFitzroy's solitary point to win the match by thatmargin . But just when the celebrations were able togo into full swing, VAFA Duty Officer and AssociationVice President John Bell announced that there was adiscrepancy with the scores and the result was to beforwarded to the VAFA Executive for a ruling . Afterlengthy meetings and a review of the match video,Bulleen-Templestowe were awarded the match, muchto the delight of a very nervous coach in HarryHarisiou . Along with their premiership win, Bulleen-Templestowe were also announced as winners of theFootball Victoria "Community Club of the Week"draw, winning $1000 from TRU Energy. The Chequewill be awarded to them at a luncheon held on VFLGrand Final day . Congratulations to Bulleen-Templestowe, you can now enjoy some well earned"R & R" .

A Section Grand Finalists Old Haileybury and OldXaverians are chalk and cheese when it comes to ASection GF experience of their respective players . OldXaverians boast a combined total of around 40 ASection GF matches, whilst Old Haileybury has none .Tim Ockleshaw (Old Xavs) will be competing in his 8thA Section decider and should Old Xaverians win he willequal John Bowen's club record of 7 premiershipmedallions . Simon Lethlean (Old Xavs) will be takingpart in his 7th A Section decider after playing in theReserves flag in 2003 . There are only five players for OldXavs who have not taken part in an A Section GFalthough for Old Haileybury, Heath Hopwood plays in his7th straight GF after playing in 6 straight for CentralDistricts in the SANFL. Amazingly, Heath has neverplayed in a Preliminary Final, winning through on alloccasions courtesy of 2nd Semi-Final victories . OldHaileybury Coach, Peter Nicholson, will be coaching his8th GF in 9 years, with last year's 2 point loss to OldXavs in the Preliminary Final spoiling his record .

- Barest of MarginsOne point victories in Grand Finals always evoke muchemotion from both players and spectators as the linebetween winning and losing is at its smallest . It ishowever rare to have one in a year, but this year (andthere is still 4 matches left) we have had 3 . Two of thesematches received much publicity this week, with the CSection decider between St Bedes(Mentone Tigers andAjax attracting a crowd of around 5000 people . Theatmosphere all day was electric and the noise of thecrowd at the end of the game almost drowned out thesiren . Only one umpire heard the siren sound, but hewas quick enough to alert his counterpart and the gamewas quickly brought to an end . Much has been said andwritten about the U19 (Red) GF between Bulleen-Templestowe and Fitzroy Reds already, but their 10goals 8 points in the last quarter has Ian Munroscouring the history books this week to see if this is thegreatest last quarter comeback in VAFA history. Theforgotten game is the D3 Reserve GF between Kew andMonash Gryphons . With only minutes remaining,Monash Gryphons were leading by 2 goals but Kewmanaged to take control kicking 2 goals 1 behind in thefinal 2 minutes to snatch victory by a point . Fantastic tohave so many close games in perfect conditions lastweekend and by all reports they were played in front ofmassive crowds .

® T'_L 1`11as 'ET-a UeEG' uas

Being the last FTLOTG for this season, it's timely to

look back on some of happenings around the VAFA

this year. The standard of football across all grades

continues to get better and better and you only have

to look at any of the grand finals played this weekend

or last to realise we have the strongest local football

competition in Australia . The VAFA has gone through

some major changes off the field this year, with

changes to the permit guidelines, the continued

development of registration and game management

software and recent staff changes . All the clubs have

been magnificent in their uptake of new technologies

and progressive thinking which has contributed to the

smooth running of the Association this year . On thefield, a highlight has been the performance of the

promoted clubs . Running through them, Old Ivanhoe

and De La Salle remained in A Section, both narrowly

missing finals places . The same applies to Beaumaris

and University Blacks with Beaumaris staying in B

Section for the first time. Ormond made the finals in

C Section and Fitzroy Reds finished a game and a half

out of the finals race . In D1, Rupertswood finished

runners-up for the second year running and have

progressed another grade to C section, whilst Old

Geelong just missed out on the double jump losing

the Preliminary Final to Rupertswood . In D2,Werribee and St Johns both managed to stay up

finishing 6th and 7th respectively and in D3,

Elsternwick narrowly missed the double jump after

losing the Preliminary Final and St Mary's become the

only promoted club to be relegated, finishing 9th and

returning to D4 for next season .

The scene was set for a great A Section Grand finalfollowing the preliminary final when wining St Kevins 'coach, the redoubtable Mike McArthur-Allen ,announced "I hope Marcellin hear this; tell them we'recoming"! The response from Marcellin's coach, Simo n

e ®

Dalrymple, was equally profound ; "That's terrific, we'reprepared"! And prepared they were as the Eaglesslammed on 7 goals in the first quarter to SKOBS' 1 goal .Marcellin continued to play well in the second term, to thelesser scoring end, and their 2 goals were invaluable asSKOBS kicked poorly for a meager reward of 3 .6 and athalf time Marcellin were looking the more coordinatedoutfit . After the main break the boys from St Kevinspicked up the pace but could not hold the Marcellin on ballbrigade and Leigh McMillan was a damaging player forthe Eagles in the forward half. St Kevins needed to kick atleast 7 in the last but were again inaccurate in front ofgoals and Marcellin won their first A Section flag ; theirprevious best being third place in 1990 . Best players -Leigh McMillan (Jock Nelson Medallist), Cox, Browne,Frisina, - Dineen (4), Sampimom (Marcellin) andO'Keefe, Kavanagh, Callery, Garvey, Ben Dollman,O'Shea (St Kevins) . In the B Section Grand Final, Old Ivanhoe were introuble at half time and De La Salle held a 4 goaladvantage . In a brilliant third term, Ivanhoe's on-ballersand forwards ran amok to the tune of 8 .5 and similarly, inthe final term, ran rings around De La who could onlyscore 2 .4 after half time . The Old Xaverians won

their third A SectionPremiership, and their

second consecutive flag ,

when they held out th efast finishing Collegians ; final score 8 .10 to 8 .5 .

Collegians had a very good first quarter in the windy,

swirling weather and kicked an important goal into thestrong wind at the Glenhuntly Road end . Xavs looked to

have wasted their opportunities with only 3 .4 . Theconditions did not allow the pure football skills of two

very good teams to come to the fore but it was gritty,

determined stuff all day . Best players - Holmes,Bowen, Brushfield, Donati, Hawkins, McLellan(Xavs) and Galbraith, Bennett, Jefferson, Kenneally,Parkin, Smith (Collegians) . Martin Jackson andPeter Gersch were Field Umpires .

In B Section, Old Trinity won the Grand Final against

Old Paradians 14 .13 to 9 .9 . Trinity had all the answersto Paradians' attempts throughout the season . Paradians

only lost 4 games all season and each time to Old

Trinity . It was a triumph for Trinity's captain/coach,Simon Dalrymple, who led his charges very well on-

field . Best players - Van Der Hoek, Beard, Sealing,

Cumming, Sealey, Dalrymple (Old Trinity) andCanavan, Dallas, Mulligan, Boyd, S Swindon,Harford (Paradians) . Dale McCann coached

Paradians .

Collegians were seeking to break a 25 year

drought in the A Section Grand Final . They were 3

games clear on top after round 18 but North OldBoys upset them in the second semi-final .

Collegians regained their form in the second half

of their preliminary final win against De La Salle,Then in the Grand Final, after a fairly even first

half, it was Collegians' straight kicking thatenabled them to stay within striking distance of

the busy North Old Boys' team, NOBS held a 6

point advantage, 5 .6 to 5 .0 at half time . The thirdquarter saw the Collegians machine really kick in

and in a remarkable run of straight kicking, theyraced to 14 goals before they scored a behind with

North kicking 3 late goals to keep them in with a

34 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

Page 37: The Amateur Footballer, Week 22, 2006

chance, 14 .1 to 8 .12 . Despite the usual committed

effort from North, Collegians continued to displaytheir excellent skills and finished comfortably in

front 21 .6 to 11 .15 . It has been an outstanding

season for the Bruce Ferguson led Collegians .

Best players - Hoyle ( 3), Tregear, Williams, IanHerman (5), Richard Herman (5), Irvine(Collegians) and Turnbull, Cahill, Brown,

Walters, Weir, Griffen (NOBS) .

The B Section Grand Final was an excellent game,

despite the very strong wind . Old Paradianskicked with the advantage and made every use by

scoring 7 .3 to Old Xaverians' solitary goal . The

Xavs almost led at half time but went in only I

point down, 7 .4 to 6 .9 . Parade could have made

more use of the wind in the third term but werestill confident at the final break with a 12 .8 to 6 .11

lead . It looked as though Parade were in trouble

when Xavs kicked three quick goals in the lastquarter but Parade steadied, and led by their

brilliant skipper, Dominic Spillane, worked hard

enough to first stem the flow and score a critical

goal into the wind to run out winners, 13 .10 to

11 .12 . It had been a magnificent season for Old

Paradians with premierships in seniors, reservesand U19's and a much awaited return to A Section .

Best players - S .Exton, Spillane, Wood, Powick(4), M Considine, Skerritt (Old Paradians) and PCurtain, Bourke, Greetham, O'Brien (5),Summers, S Curtain (Old Xavs) .

North Old Boys won the `L A Adamson' Cup inthe A Section Grand final against St Bernards Old

Collegians after taking the lead in the second

quarter and never relinquishing it before the final

score of 18 .18 to 11 .11 . The J V Deane Cup for B

Section was won by Marcellin Old Collegians

who trailed Caulfield Grammarians by two and ahalf goals at half time but completely took over in

the third and held their lead, running out winners

10 .15 to 7 .5 . Old Melburnians defeated Old

Haileyburians 12 .22 to 8 .15 and gained the H J

Stewart Cup for C Section . OM's first quarter was

exceptional, 6 .11 to 0 .1 and only some errant shots

for goal stopped the game being completely over by

the first break . Old Xaverians were on the marchby winning D Section, and the E F Atkins Cup,

with a polished display against AJAX 20 .17 to

15 .7 . La Trobe Blacks won their first VAFA Flag in

E Section and took home the P A Matthews Cup .

They held control from half time and werecomfortable in the finish, 12 .8 to 4 .10 . West

Brunswick were kings of F Section, winning the

premiership and the J B Cordner Cup very easilyagainst Beverley Hills 19 .16 to 4 .8 . Junior Section

1 saw North Old Boys power away from MonashUniversity in their quest for the J S McCann Cup

and ran out well deserved winners 16 .4 to 6 .12 .

Thomastown, in a thrilling game against St

Bernards, won the Junior Section 2 Grand Final

and the F H Coldrey Cup, 7 .16 to 7 .15 .

After finishing in fourth position at the completionof the home and away games, Old Paradiansexperienced narrow wins (6 and 5 points

Congratulations to South Melbourne, who after aseason filled with many triumphs, and also manydramas, played out a sensational Grand Final to takehome the D3 Premiership . Well done also to Bentleig hfor putting up such a brave fight .Congratulations also to Kew who took out theReserves flag, and to Monash Gryphons whocontributed to a great entree to the main course tofollow .

Senior Grand Final Review -South Melbourne vs Bentleig hIt was a great day weather-wise at the CheltenhamReserve, for what would be a memorable final . Withthe thoughts of South having beaten Bentleigh in the2000 Grand Final fresh in Demon's memory, the teamwas looking to assume the ascendancy early in thematch .Kicking with a slight breeze, it was the Demonmidfielders who did just that and took the earlyinitiative as Frank Dimmatina lead from the front . HisDemon forwards duly converted the hard work in thecentre and Bentleigh had jumped to a handy five-goallead at the first change before South knew what had hitthem .However, it was not panic-stations in the Swan huddleat quarter-time as Gerard Harrington calmed hischargers down with the view to get their side back inthe match .As the siren sounded, Simon Glendenning was lookingstrong at fullback, keeping D3 Centurion Sharp down, and the tide began to turn . South's Billy McGee alsobegan to lift in the Blood forward-line and themomentum noticeably swung the way of the Bloods .However; as predicted in my review last week, it was inthe engine-room where the match would be won orlost, and with the likes of Cheevers and Aquilinagetting on top and Paul Dimmatina being well held bySteve McDougall the two sides were neck and neck atthe major break .The third quarter was a riveting affair with both sidesgoing goal for goal as Bentleigh threatened to blow theBloods away. However, it was Andy Hannan at CHF wholead from the front to ensure that his side kept in touchwith the Demons and set up a thrilling final stanza .And it was in the final quarter where the cream rose tothe top . South's back six remained calm under theimmense pressure and while their teammates in thecentre ran their legs into cramp the Bloods blew thegame apart to take out a deserved victory.

36

Deservingly, it was SteveAquilina who took out theVB Zanin medal, and evenmore appropriate wa smatch-breaker And yHannan who held the cup aloft to cap off what was abrilliant personal effort .

Reserves Grand Final Review -Kew vs Monash Gryphon sAs had been the theme for the entire D3 Reservesfinals, this was a match played at cracking pace andwas described as one of the more remarkable finals .And just like their previous encounters this season, there was the barest of margins between the two sides .Ultimately though it was Kew who deservingly finishedwith their noses in front. The result a product of Kewutilising the ball more effectively in their forward linewhile at the other end, Monash were a lot morewasteful .For the Gryphons, Wal Pocock was unstoppable upforward however, like his teammates, his accuracy wasthe problem with 5-6 . Hetherington, Still and JasonHarrak also played well for the Gryphons .Meanwhile, the premiers were well served by MatthewMacheda, Jamie Bell and Ben Carman .

(This week's report by Glenn Carle)

by Ed Sill

House had Cooperpresenting well andproving a real thornin the side for the Lboys fro mHawthorn . The game, sitting so precariously, wastipped in Powerhouse's favour in the last sevenminutes of the quarter. Hawthorn had snuck acouple of goals in a row to get five points in front, before Powerhouse kicked the next four goals, with the last to Edwards after the siren, to take a20 point lead into the last quarter .

Peter Tyson and Rob Sirosi couldn't have aske dfor a better day on Saturday. Following thedifficult conditions of the week before, the scen ewas beautifully set for the battle of D4 under anearly cloudless sky with only a slight breeze . Itwould be a true contest of who was the best teamon the day.

The first quarter was a story of two halves . AfterPowerhouse kicked the first major, Hawthorn hada prolonged period of pressure on thePowerhouse backline and with some moreaccurate kicking could have found themselveswith a handy lead . But their wastefulness upforward was to be matched by the House later inthe quarter and at the first break it wasPowerhouse by 7 points .

The second quarter was more of a see-saw affair, with each side having moments of brilliance, matched with some really tough in close action .Nerves were still a factor at this stage as anumber of players fumbled and droppeduncontested marks . The backlines continued tobe on top as both side struggled in front of goals .Either side could have gone into the major breaka couple of goals up, but as it was, there was onlyone point the difference in favour of the Houseand the game looked as though it could go eitherway . Aitken had been getting plenty of the balland Dawso nwas on top in the ruck, but Verbene, fortunate tobe allowed back on the ground in the secondquarter after missing the interchange gate infront of the fill-in scribe, was providing a realtoughness around the ball that had the Hawksworried .

The third quarter was again a tight struggle .Powerhouse started to assert their strength in thecentre whilst the Hawks were totally devoid ofoptions across half forward . Conversely, the

The atmosphere at the final change was quitestrange, but would bear itself out . ThePowerhouse huddle sounded as though they hadthe game won, whilst the noises coming from theHawks were more of optimism than belief . CoachTyson implored his players to run, run, run if theywere to win the game and if they were to gethome, they needed to kick the first couple of

goals in the last . The House, meanwhile, neededonly to hold firm . But they did far more than that .Kicking the first goal of the last quarter, theirbody language became that of winners andHawthorn's heads dropped . The contests thathad been there for the first three quartersdropped away as Powerhouse did as theypleased . From numerous banana kicks to a greatgoal in front of their own crowd, they made surethat the D4 trophy was going back toPowerhouse emphatically by piling on 7 .6 in thelast . Edwards added to his tally for the yearfinishing with 6 after sharing the honours withAvery for 3 quarters, whilst Cooper was awardedthe A.K. White medal for his fine efforts acrosshalf forward for the House .

So the moral of the story is, as we probablyalready knew, that finals are a whole new kettle offish . Having finished third, Powerhouse beat allsides in the top 4 to take home the premiership, whilst the sides with the better formlines goinginto the finals, all faltered at some stage of thejourney . Congratulations to all players, officialsand those associated with the Powerhouseseniors for their premiership victory and all thebest to both them and Hawthorn in D3 next year .

ReservesIt was a big day (and I'm sure night) forPowerhouse, with their seconds also takinghome the cup . They set up the match by burstingout of the blocks and kicking eight goals to two inthe first quarter and were rarely troubled fromthere . Whilst Eltham tried rally a number of times

throughout the game, the House seemed to havejust enough answers to keep the Turtles at bay,and went on to win by 21 points, with Eltham leftto rue the one that maybe got away.

And so we wrap up the 2006 season . There havebeen some great games and some greatindividual performances . Congratulations againto those that took home individual and teamhonours and I wish you all the best as you startto think about hitting the track for your first pre-season hit out which, realistically, isn't all that faraway. Until next year. . .

UNDER 19 (1 )Twelve goals booted in the first quarter set the scene fora fast paced, action packed stanza . Great footy to watch, the highlight for me being quick ball movement and cleverball use by both teams .The Second quarter was tight, De La kicking three to theXavs five . The likes of Will Fenton for De La, and StephenDoyle from Xavs were standing at a height, ensuring amatch to remember. De La by less than a goal at themajor break - some tired legs pushing on .The premiership quarter saw De La just edge out Xavsand run into the last break with a handy six point lead .What a tight quarter, Sam Nethersole, Ryan Semmel andJames Crow brilliant for De La, while Dom Quin, JamesGlenn and Thomas Grigg were solid for Xavs .The final stanza came and then went in a flash . A powerfulDe La triumphant by 30 points . The victory scenes wereamazing and boiled over into the rooms with gusto .Impressed with the game and the team performance byDe La . Very consistent throughout the year boys, welldone! Congratulation to all the coaching staff and supportstaff also, an amazing job and it takes a lot of time andeffort to get so far.

Best on groun dThe T.A. Johnson Medalist was awarded to none otherthan Greg Hesse from De Ia . Good on ya kid . A fine effortall day and just reward for a consistent season . Goodstuff !

M ad M onda yNo doubt some fine form displayed by De La, with OldXavs tipped to be drowning the sorrows .

The final lockThree locks in a row. Its time for a single double lock! . Geton Eremein this weekend and follow it through the spring .Also, double click on Sydney-Adelaide this weekend .

GoodbyeThanks to anyone who helped out this year. It has been anabsolute pleasure . The U19 program run by the VAFA ismagnificent. Such a strong league, the future looks verybright . Good luck to De La, hope you had a good week .Good luck to Uni Blacks reserves today! See you all nexttime around and have a good spring carnival! Happypunting !

UNDER 19 (2)Old Camberwell are PREMIERS, finishing fourth and

belting the top 3 sides, inas many weeks . StephanClarke and his boys havebeen a revelation, despite - -me tipping against the mmost weeks .Camberwell's first quarter set the scene as theydominated in what was a scrappy opening . Both sideshad opportunities, but while Carey squandered them, theWellers used it . Andrew Clarke and Poynton were earlystandouts . The second continued in the same vogue asClarke and Jenkins ran hard out of the guts deliveringswiftly to Hillier and Shanks . The Backs steadied the shipwith Mulligan, Dickson and Nichols preventing Bull andRossidis, allowing only 1 goal .The Premiership quarter saw the Wellers bang on 6 goals,'opening with a Jenkins bomb out of the middle . ForwardsPillay, Tolson, Hillier and Shanks lead, creating constantCarey headaches, winning the ball across half forwardand moving it quickly, creating space in the arc .In a desperate attempt to salvage something, Carey'sButch Palmer made 3 bold moves in the last. Parkerforward (who had starred earlier in the year), big MarshallBull into the middle and Rossidis into the ruck and for awhile, they were able to change the flow, with Parkerkicking 2 . But the Wellers continued their run withJenkins, Wright and Peasnell playing a tagging roll . Hillierended up with 7 with Clarke, Wright, and Bonyhadyplaying stellar games . But in everyone's eyes PeterJenkins was the most influential ball-winner on theground with a stunning BOG performance, winning theJohn Myles Medal . McQueen, Hodges, Elliot andMcCready-Brown were the sole standouts in a Carey sidethat lacked their early season form .Special thanks to Mark Spinoso (Parade), Stephan Clarke(Camberwell), Duncan Palmer (Carey), Joe Lyttleton(Brighton) and Patrick Mitchell (Whitefriars) for all yourinput this year. bernecich@netspace .net.a u

St . Bedes's M entone Tigers capped off their stellar seasonwith premiership glory last Saturday at Central Reserveagainst a gallant Ormond . The Tigers pinched an earlybreak and by qua rter time had a handy 17 point leadthanks to Mitch Bodinnar looking dangerous as usual .The second term was more of the same with the Tigers'Dean Francis getting busy and Alex Falkiner in everything.A 28 point half time lead to St. Bede's Mentone looked likea large task for Ormond but to their credit they never gav e

in . After their giant killing antics of recent weeks the teambattled hard with Aaron Holman playing well as he haddone all season and Christian Woodford showing he is abig game player after playing one of his best games . WithSBMT leading by 31 points at the last break it looked likeit may be all over, but again Ormond refused to give in .Dean Francis put in a stellar performance throughout theday and with the help of Chris Richards and DanielGraham, SBMT just had too much class . A tied finalquarter saw SBMT take premiership glory and scenes ofjubilation followed . Bodinnar finished with 4 majors forthe winners while Ormond's Orry Lack and vice-captainLuke Duthie finished with 2 apiece .Congratulations to SBMT and coach Owen Lalor for a

thoroughly deserved win and a great season, but Ormondhad a real crack and were worthy foes on the day. Thanks to all those who have contributed to this columnthroughout the season and I wish all teams and playersbest of luck next year.

UNDER 19 (BLUE )Old Mentonians have fulfilled a fairytale season with anunbelievable Grand Final win in front of a huge crowdunder lights at Sportscover Arena . The first VAFA under19 game played at night was a crowd pleaser as peoplerolled in from everywhere to watch the best two teams inSection Blue . The game was played at a frenetic pace asboth teams fed off the crowd noise and the energygenerated from playing in a Grand Final . The ball wasmoving from either sides of the ground with skillfulpassages of play from both teams, with early signsindicating that goals would be rarer than hen's teeth . Onlythree points separated the two teams in Old Mentonians'favour at the first break, with goals drying up in thesecond quarter. Skipper Jacob Moon stopped manyattacks as the loose man in defence, while Adam Weekeswas awesome at full back for Mazenod, even underduress from the away crowd . Mazenod could onlymanage a single behind in the second quarter as OldMentonians took a 12 point lead at the main break . Thethird quarter opened up as forwards got more chancesand both Bogar for Mazenod and Goulding for OldMentonians getting busy. It still remained a 10 point leadin Old Mentonians' favour heading into the last break withthe game a chance to go either way . Jesse Prowse wasawesome in his attack on the ball for Old Mentonians inthe last quarter but they couldn't pinch that all importantbreak to put Mazenod away . Nicholas Lewton tried toinspire the Mazenod boys for one last effort, however, agoal at the 29 minute mark to Old Mentonians put thegame beyond doubt. A 17 point victory and wild scenesfollowed as the faithful celebrated with the players, withinspirational skipper Jacob Moon taking the medal for hisbest on ground performance . All in all a great night forunder 19 football in front of a large, raucous crowd at thehome of the VAFA.Congratulations to Old Mentonians and Mazenod, withboth teams deserving the plaudits for fine seasons .Thanks to all those who contributed throughout theseason including Paul Lourey, Shane Regan, MarkFairbanks and Cameron McGregor just to name a few .Good luck to all for season 2007.

UNDER 19 (RED)RED ended in utter confusion Sunday afternoon in aseason that has given us so much . But I have never seensuch a fairy tale ending, ever in sport .For it was Fitzroy who dominated a Bullant side, wholooked intimidated for 3 quarters . Fitzroy were stronger, faster and harder. The first half saw a scrappy contest, butironically, a frenetic Reds backline got them 8 goals up b y

half time with Olarenshaw, Alasso and Wills forming animpenetrable force . Ligris, Donato and Bombaci wereeverywhere and forwards were converting, while BulleenTemp squandered in front of the sticks . After the break,Bulleen-Temp produced a mini fight-back, but continuedto miss shots on goal . Pete Voglis and Mark Coulstonwere the sole glimmers of hope, but unawares toeveryone, the whole side would kick in after the finalbreak. At three quarter time the Bullants were 11 goalsdown and I was ready for an afternoon siesta. But as theBulleen-Temp huddle broke I noticed that they had beenshaken by Coach Harisou's speech . EVERYTHING hadchanged and Fitzroy had stopped . Tonelli and Illingworthwere strong targets forward, especially when the latterbelted a 70 metre boomer. Ruckman Waters, got it downto the likes of Rametta, Pete & Dave Voglis', Coulston andMarc Carfi up forward . With 45 of the 66 point deficiteaten up, I still wouldn't believe it, but when Dan Tonelliput one home to make the difference 6 points, Presto n

City Oval erupted in a sea of Blue and Gold . With less thana minute to go, Steve Millar bombed the ball into the goalsquare, the whistle blew, a free kick to Pete Voglis, myBOG . Bullants by a point . In the dying seconds, hearts hadstopped, jaws dropped and spectators watched indisbelief . The siren went and a sound that will remain inmy ears for years to come bellowed . They had come backfrom 66 points to win by a point . But as all the tears andsmiles were shared, a horrible confusion spread as anofficial claimed a discrepancy with the score cards . Justas the Reds had conceded defeat and the Bullantsrejoiced, a great big bloody spanner had been thrown intothe works. We'd have to wait a day .On Monday afternoon the news came in . BULLANTS arepremiers . The players knew it, the fans knew it, Fitzroyknew it. Tom Waters could now accept his deserved MaxLyon medal for BOG .Special thanks to Andrew Fabris (Bulleen-Temp) andFrank Vanderhurk (Rupertswood) for all their help thisyear. bernecich@netspace .net.a u
