VAFA is one of the premier; if, notpremier, "junior" competitions in AustraOver 10,000 registered players,_ over, 5C 0 0players and umpires on the faelc 'Saturday speaks volumes for the qt-rhe competition provided.

One of the most pleasing aspects of

~i.1FA is that our Under 19 competition I

becoming stronger as time goes by. Whenstarted playing, there was only one Unde r1,9 section, with 10 teams . We now have 5sections with 50 teams, and this meansthat many more younger footballers havethe opportunity to continue playing an d

ultimately move on to senior football ,

rather than drifting away from football i nparticular and sport in general . I saw oneof the Under 19 Section 2 Grand Finalslast Saturday, and in atrocious conditions ,each of the teams put on a great exhibition

of football, displaying skills that spectatorsthought impossible in the rain and mud .

The future of the VAFA is very rosy whenwe can produce footballers with theseskills at Under 19 level .

I would like also to take the opportunity t othank publicly our staff and the members

he Executive. We are most fortunate t ohave enthusiastic and hard working staff

potential sponsors . We will have to workdiligently to maintain the high position othe VAFA in the football world, but I haveno doubt that between the clubs and theadministration, it can be done .

To those clubs which have already wonpremierships, congratulations on asuccessful season. Congratulations also toour best and fairest, and our goal kickingmedallists . Well didn't last weekend have everything ? The delugesmade scoring a rarity and final scores close, and althoughthe "footy wasn't pretty" the tenseness and determinationof "there is no tomorrow" made for wonderful contests .We had everything from the Collingwood coack MickMaltlaouse delivering one of his famous fire andbrimstone addresses to the Hampton Rovers reserves teambefore their GF at Sandringham last Saturday, right

through to the drawn game in the B section preliminary final at SportscoverArena . This match resulted in extra time being called upon to determine thewinner (Collegians) in duller than twilight conditions . Mick's address to theRovers (his son plays for the Roves), really sent a buzz through the playersand the crowd outside trying to overhear some of the words of the TopMagpie .

I have been delighted this week to have been able to oversee the creationof a new full-time appointment in the VAFA, that of a Director of UmpireOperations . Brian Goodman, our current umpire advisor, has accepted thisnew role and will commence in the position as soon as possible . Not only willBrian carry out his current duties as adviser, he will also assume many otherroles associated with the recruitment, development and retention of umpiresand working with the existing group of umpires to further develop their skillsand understanding of the game . Brian will commence his new role after ashort break and messages can be left for him by phoning VAFA headquarters .I look forward to observing the success of this appointment as time goes by .

Thanks you to all who have contributed to another successful season ofAmateur football . I acknowledge the wonderful contribution of the Executive, who give up their time to ensure the continued development of the VAFA . Isincerely thank my staff of Brett, Sue, Kate, Matt, Peter, Cliff, TonyNancy for their years of loyalty to myself and dedication to the VAFA .Finally, I thank my wonderful wife Robynfor her overwhelming support and ability toalways be there over the long andinteresting journey .

To Nick (Bourke), Bruce (McTaggart), theExecutive, the new CEO and all the clubs,

all the very best for the future .

The final word. Good luck to all teamstoday. I look forward to calling out thenames of the players to receive their A andB section medallions for one last time .

$T3 .r s '44 years . 44 long years since Uni Blues last wonan A Grade flag . For the Uni players runningaround today, it may as well be 400 years . Theworld was a little different then . Kennedy was inthe White House and the m an who may well be ournext PM had yet to be born . In amateur football ,my Year 12 economics teacher Jock Nelson was thepremier player in the state while long forgottenteams such as Coburg, Commonwealth Bank andState Savings B ank were ri ght in the mix. In thesubsequent years, clubs such as Uni Blacks, OldParadians, De La Salle, Ormond an d Old Xaveriansall built mini VAFA dynasties at various stages. So what happened to the Blues in those 44 years?Well, they were certainly thereabouts. Runners up5 times in A Grade, finalists13 times but no bigCohuna . M any theo ri es abound as to why theycouldn't make it. That they were too transient aclub, with nlayers shooting through as soon asthey con _ J their degrees . That distractionssuch as s cnt exch anges and exams took toogreat a toll. That they were a glorified social clubthat perhaps didn't take their footy as seri ously assome others . "Too m any benders, not enoughdefenders" was a common jibe .If all this is to change today, new coach John K aniswill rightfully get the plaudits for completelyaltering the footballing culture up at MelbourneUni . Amazingly, Kanis ( himself a protegee of JockNelson) came into the role with no coachingexperience and very quickly changed both thegame plan and they way the students approachedtheir football. Gun midfielders were recruited fromthe VFL an d the bush . No longer did star playersinexplicably jet off to Belarus halfway through theseason . The style of game became one of slickhan dball and attack from defence . Guys who wereperennial reserv es players suddenly became key AGraders. Most importan tly, he galvanised a groupof young and enigmatic players and made thembelieve in themselves. If this is the first A Grade game you've seen thisyear, you may not recognise many of these Uniguys but they're worth watching. Ross Young is 21came from nowhere to be one of the premierplayers in the comp . James Scambler an d M ark

Paterson gave upVFL careers to

dominate everyweek. Hugh Nailon,Cam Roydhouse,Damien Guengerich went from kicking the dew offthe grass in the twos to vital senior defenders. Theyare an eclectic mix too; from country boys such asYoung, Paul Butko and captain Quinton Gleeson toex APS players like Tom Wilcox, George DeCrespigny and Ed Clark.Bu t watch out . . . .There are two things in their way. One is history. AGrade Grand Finals have a curious habit ofthrowing up bemusing results . By no means are aminor flag and a second semi final win a guaranteeof ultimate success. In recent years, rememberNOBS in 1991, Collegians in 1996, OldMelburnians in 1999 and St Bernards in 2000 &2003? All dominated those years yet fell at the lasthurdle. The other is a big, hulking presence in the StBernards forcvard line by the name of Dan Jordan .When he's on song, no-one can stop him. In termsof amateur football, it's hard to think of anyonewho hits packs as hard as him or is as proficientat one grab marks . Like any St Bernards footballerworth his salt, he has a bit of mongrel in him. Hehas a few Grand Final demons to exercise (knockedunconscious in 2002, pretty quiet last year) so hi s

battle with old foe James Hayter may well decidethe fortunes of this game . Watch out too, for theiryoung centreman Chris Goullet . A lot of peoplereckon his grandad was the best player to everplay the game . Their nuggetty taggers such asDavid Blunt and Mick Kavanagh will be crucialtoday as well. Expect them to get the big jobs oneither Young, Gleeson or Scambler.Dermott Brereton once said that you can't usenormal logic when it comes to assessing grandfmals . Maybe so Derm, but my heart and head stillsays Uni Blues . They play the most attractivebrand of football, are the most shrewdly coachedside going around, have the best players, play onmost picturesque ground in the comp and have asolid supporter base refreshingly devoid ofratbags . I can't think of any amateur club thatdeserves this more . Uni by 10 points. The most striking thing about this team is the glutof gun youngsters in their teens or early twenties .The future certainly looks bright. It was picked onform, not reputation, hence the omission of highlytalented players such as Paul Corrigan, BrettO'Farrell and Glenn Cox, whose seasons werederailed by injury. Others unlucky to miss outwere Mark Corrigan, Jarred Frazer, larkPaterson, Dean Dobric, Brent Walsh, CharlesTallent and Andrew Lowcock .

St . ernarLs Cu ----- ---- fmal against UniBlues marks the 5C _'g ✓ __ ~_ of St.Bernard's fullforward Dau Josdan. With his big frame and hisbig heart Dan has been one of the main reasons

for the club's consistency over the past seasonsand we all wish Dan the best for today's game andoffer congratulations on his past games andgoalkicking performances . Also In today's grandfinal Lucas " Rooster" Fielding makes it a uniquedouble by competing in his 50th game forSt.Bernard's and his third successive A gradegrand fmal. Since coming from Calder Cannons"Roo" has been an automatic senior selection andhas won Victorian representation as a dashinghalf back . Congratulations Lucas and may today'sgame be as good as your last 49 . Go Bernard's !

Up 2 Section's in two years is an outstandingperformance in anyone's language so to all atCollegians from Pat Hawkins to Wayne Dyer, RodNancarrow, all the Committee, Officials,Supporters and of course the playerscongratulations on a job well done to get the clubback into A Grade where it believes it belongs .To Old Ivanhoe gallant in defeat well done on astellar season I know it's disappointing but lifegoes on and there is always next year.REVIEWA Preliminary Final is always a hard game and thisone was no exception in fact it was nothing shortof an epic, so close that in fact it went into extratime . In an old fashioned slog the courage andcommitment from both sides was worth goingmiles to see .Old Ivanhoe found the conditions frustrating andpossibly by if -- ber of scoring shots had mostof the play, b ci to grind really hard to scoretheir goals whi . the Lions were able to score somequick ones . But one has to adapt to the prevailingconditions and perhaps the Hoers tried to play dryweather football trying to take marks where apunch might have been the more effective option .By the play off period the Hoers were spent whichis to be expected after a hard campaign just to getthis far, while Collegians kept their cool, with theattack on the footy and work at the numerousstoppages outstanding, this effort saw themomentum swing their way when the game was inthe balance . Extra time saw a dashing point fromNick Baxter and a miraculous snap from JamesFry that gave the Lions a handy break, thenfollowed some heavy shut down footy and the gamewas over and the boys from Wesley celebrated theirreturn to A Section .Brock Mooney and Ben Holst did terrific jobs onLuxon and Branigan, Andrew Shinkfield and Nic'Harrison were strong around the footy all day,Andrew Baxter and Jono Dixon were also effectiv eplayers as well, in a very tight knit unit who playfor each other and their club with a rare intensity.Stewie Low played another blinder niiv he missed

so many early games,Rowan t>'eddle andChanz Crowley kepttheir opponents incheck for most of the

lday, Sjourke Price and Scott Curatolo strongaround the packs, Michael Clarke strong acrosshalf back, and Luke Bolzon his normal self in theruck. In the Reserves a Robert Gross inspired St Kevinsreversed the results during the season to defeat theLions and join their Senior compatriots in the oneg ie in September.a . sa . .J.Today brings to fruition what we play the game forthe chance to be part of a premiership side andclub . SKOBS have made a pretty good fist of BGrade this year and head straight back to thepremier section in 2005, can they take somesilverware with them as well as it's first ever BSection Flag, they would be hoping so . Standing intheir path is a Collegians side whose efforts overthe last two seasons is nothing short ofsensational, there is no doubt that the Lionspossess some strong talent and a never say dieattitude with an incredible will to succeed .Dave Murray and Pat Hawkins have been standouts as Coaches this year hence their naming as

Joint Coaches in the B Section Team of the year, Ijust couldn't split you guys . I wish you both welland hope it is a good game .There are no secrets between these two sides theyhave had 3 terrific battles so far this year and soknow each other's games so very very well . StKevins would most certainly have enjoyed theirbreak last week and must have been rubbing theirhands with glee as they watched the Lions slog itout and most have become ecstatic as the gamewent into extra time. And this in the pressure cooker atmosphere of aGrand Final could be just the slight advantageneeded to sway things SKOBS way. So in anabsolute toss up I will go with the fresher legs ofthe lads from Righetti to greet the judge and takethe Cup to the Mercat for a night of celebrations .In the Reserves GF a fine prelude to the main gameshould see an entertaining clash between thefavourites North Old Boys and the St Nevins unit.Having taken the long road to the big dance CoachGross has his charges fully primed and with a fulllist the boys are primed. In a minor upset I put myfaith in the '"LEGEND" and his lads to start the dayon a high for Skevvies.PRESS CORRESPONDENTS .In this my final column for the year again thanksto everyone for their support throughout i' ;season, to Don Dowell terrific input mate, PatHawkins excellent all year, and ion Fogarty andNick Sweeney for some occasional flashes ofbrilliance well done .

In the three season clashes little hadseparated the teams, however in the gamethat mattered most, MHSOB across thepaddock had all the answers. The Unicornplayers were harder and stronger at the balland even when tested, they respondedmagnificently to the challenge and wereworthy recipients of the 2004 HJ StewartCup .

GRAND F

Heavy overnight rain on the eve of the match, marred the magnificent playing surface of th eTrevor Barker oval and the ground wasconsiderably cut up by the Ajax and HamptonReserves encounter. Although the weatherconditions were "coolish" and may havedeterred some supporters from making thetrek out to Sandy, a boisterrous crowd withumbrellas at the ready, were thankful thegame at least would begin without rain or araging typhoon .

Caulfield sporting the white shorts, hadbecome the first team to qualify for B Gradeand they quickly received a taste of thephysicality that is associated with the highergrade, when in the first play of the gameMHSOB bullocked the ball forward andPertzel slotted home the opening major. TheUnicorns Bamert, would kick the quarter'sonly other goal and with MHSOB midfieldersdominating the stoppages and Svirskiswinning the ruck duels, they had leftCaulfield goalless at the first change and withmore than a few headaches for their coachingpanel .

Taylor goaled early into the second term andthe minor premiers appeared well on the wayto becoming pennant winners . However, afterWill goaled to get the Fields on the board andBruhn pulled another back, the Caulfieldintensity had lifted and they were enjoyingwhat would ultimately prove their best period

of the game, reducing thedeficit to fourpoints . Big gamesare when the goodplayers stand up and the Caulfield surgeproved the catalyst for The Highs' JasonBarnett to come to the fore . In an inspiredeight minute patch, he was unluckily denieda low chest mark, took another, touched theheavens when pulling down a mighty graband booted two goals including a terrific snapand had a hand in another goal which seemedto deflate the Fielders players and supporters .MHSOB by 18 at the main interval .

Bamert would again be involved in providingthe first of the third term for Pertzel and withHogan and Campbell, gathering a mountainof possessions and bobbing up with goals toextend the lead, the latter kicking his from offthe ground 35 metres away from thebigsticks, the Fielders hopes of premiershipglory appeared gone . Goals to Pearce andBrett Sinclair gave the Fields some late hope, but again it was Bamert, who after the siren

and in the day's only light rain, kicked trulyfrom 50 and routed any Caulfield hopes toleave the Unicorns commanding 32 pointleaders .

Competition best and fairest Matthew Whitehad worked himself into the game andcomplemented a stellar season by snaggingtwo final quarter majors, including a 55metre running bomb. The Fielders didn't stoptrying, particularly onballers Fallu, Frater,Will and Widjaja but simply did not have theanswers to restrict a well drilled andcommitted side who ran hard and straightthrough the lines, responding to everychallenge and adapting very smartly to thewet surrounds . A day to savour for theUnicorns, eventually running out impressive49 point winners, with Jayden Pertzeladjudged the Michael Ritterman Medallist .

The Rovers made great use of the first quartergale to effectively end the contest against theJackas . After that, the hurricane fell to azephyr and Ajax couldn't pull back theadvantage against a club committed tosalvaging some silverware for the season .Hampton victorious by 52 .

Congratulations to University BlacksSeniors on becoming only the 4thteam in D-D 1 Section since 1932 to gothrough a season undefeated, and twoFlags into the bargain! A fabulousperformance and a fitting tribute toRay Wilson and the entire ensemble atBlacks for all their hard work !The bottom 30cm of my whiteMoleskin trousers were badly stainedwhen I departed from Box Hill CityOval last Saturday evening. I won'tstipulate the colour, but had it beenaround the seat area it would havebeen very embarrassing! At 8 :30 thatmorning the heavy overnight rain hadproved too mueh even for theexcellent drainage system and theoval was surrounded by a moatseveral metres wide . However, thedrains did work because by the timeHead Groundsman, Greg Doyle, removed the central covers (with theassistance of a bevy of Blacks players, thanks chaps!) and the Ressies tookthe field, the water table was mostlybelow ground and the footing for thetwo matches was surprisingly good !Thanks to the on and off field officialsof University Blacks, Banyule, & OldMentonians, your adherence touniforms and proceduralrequirements was exemplary andmade life easier for John Bell, KeithSharkie, & yours truly . Thanks alsoto Andrew Pirchan, General Managerof Box Hill Hawks, for his assistancethroughout the Finals period .

THE GRAND FINALSSENIOR: University Blacks vBanyule

Given the difficult, sloshy conditions, the skill levels displayed in this gameby both teams were remarkable, andit is a real pity that the weather wasso unkind, because BHCO is a superbvenue and Blacks and Bears are filledwith talented footballers . After thisgame, no one could possibly arguethat Blacks weren't the dominantforce in D1 for 2004; whenever theywere under the hammer, which wasfrequently, they ratcheted up a notchto keep the Bears at bay, andanswered every challenge thrown atthem. After opening up a 4 goalsbreak in Q 1 kicking to the ScoreBoard end Blacks defied everyattempt by Banyule to get any closer, and this in spite of BIG DaveWilliams's clear ascendency at thecentre throw ups . Dave Gayferseemed to be everwhere for the Bears,Tom Wise never let up in the packs, and Chris Taylor was also hard at theball all day. Loose ball contests werered hot all day but player disciplinewas exceptionally high, so there werefew "finals flare ups" to marproceedings . While the game was notthe spectacle it could have been on afirm ground, there were manyexamples of seriously clever play, andnone better than Joe Sibilia's"Maradona" goal off the ground whilerunning in the opposite direction!Bryce Shaw capped off a very goodseason by taking out the JohnManton Medal for the shear quality ofhis work for Blacks in and round the

many packs . The Kempton Bros, Matt& Paul, Andy Costello, Sam Price &Robbie Scarlett were all somehowsingled out for praise in a very evenBlacks unit . AND COP THIS, noBlacks player arced up at or backchatted a field umpire during theentire match!!!! Discipline like that isnot only a tribute to the Players andCoach, but if universally applied, would nearly solve overnight thebiggest single problem in the VAFAtoday, UMPIRE NUMBERS!! !

RESERVE: University B lacks v OldMenton ians

"Can the fairy tale finals run of thePanthers continue?" Well it was anice thought but the Blacks madesure it didn't happen! OldMentonians gave every last joule ofeffort, but Blacks had their measurein the difficult conditions to becomevery worthy recipients of the RessiesFlag for 2004!

fiaslleeia-'I'eaaaplest®we got the jump on i " I I lead slightly, theCarey at Central Reserve, Glen Waverley, margin at ful lon Saturday, with Pat Milesi getting a braceof goals inside the first five minutes .Considering the conditions, both the stateof the ground and what was happeningoverhead, this early advantage would provecrucial, as the Bullants managed to addanother major before quarter time, whilstalso keeping the Panthers goalless .The second quarter saw Old Carey decreasethe gap, scoring two goals to one, and bringthe margin to 10 points at half time .Everett in the ruck and Parton on the ballled the way for the Panthers change infortune, while the likes of Chivers andSchneider ensured that the Bullants kepttheir noses in front at the main break . AlsoBulleen-Templestowe were very muchdominant in general play, and the 10 pointlead was probably worth two or three timesas much in this weather, they could notafford to rest on their laurels .And this certainly was the case in whatcould honestly be described, without anyhyperbole for once, as the premiershipquarter. The Bullants maintained theirintensity and physicality, keeping OldCarey scoreless for the third term, whilemanaging to grind out four goals of theirown. Bulleen skipper Chivers continued towreak havoc and provided a sterlingexample to his teammates .The sting had gone out of the game by thefinal quarter, with the Bullants starting theterm with an even six goal advantage . Bothside split four goals between them, but itdid little more than delay the inevitable .By the time the siren sounded, Bulleen-Templestowe had managed to extend their

time being 39points .Greg Chivers capped off a big week, beginning with his runner-up finish in theD2 best and fairest count, by holding aloftthe premiership cup and being awarded theAnthony Fellows medal for best on ground .Bulleen-Templestowe had been the subjectof some skepticism about their credentialsas a premiership contender during theyear, but certainly did the business when itcounted, earning an instant return to D iSection in emphatic style . Socongratulations to the Bullants as a club, and to each of you as individuals, and goodluck, as with all the club involved this year,in 2005 .

premiership drought but also arrested aslump that saw it relegated twice in justfive years .A brief overview of the club's history shouldillustrate just how far it had fallen .The Bullants, who celebrated their 30thanniversary last month, finished third inthe first of its four years in A-grade in1984 . However, since its relegation fromthe top flight in 198 7 , the club experienceda steady decline through the grades . Andwhen it was relegated from D-grade lastseason after winning just four games, theclub plummeted to its lowest ebb since1978 when, in just its fourth season, it wascompeting in E-grade .Despite the weight of history Bullantssupercoach Steve Easton, who can now adda VAFA premiership to the six flags he wonin the Diamond Valley league, was soconfident of victory he told the AmateurFootballer last week his side would win .The "very good feel" in the Bullants roomsbefore the game only enhanced thatconfidence .While many thought the heavy and muddyconditions, the result of an overnightdeluge, would assist the Bullants andhamper the Panthers, Easton wasdisappointed to see the ground in such adeteriorated state ."I just thought psychologically they wouldhave been up because they thrashed us inheavy conditions at their ground (in round1 7 )," he said ."We beat them (in the second-semi final) byseven goals on a perfect day. "Despite the heavy conditions, Easton knewin the third quarter his side would not loseafter skipper and Anthony Fellowsmedallist Greg Chivers, aided by a leg-break Shane Warne would be proud of,kicked a 45-metre goal to put the Bullantsfive goals up.The Bullants started the season with astring of narrow victories against thebottom four clubs and after defeating everyclub in the section finished the season withtwo resounding victories against the minorpremiers ."We gathered momentum as the seasonwent on," Easton said .

As for the future, Easton expected his sidewould continue to improve ."I'd be disappointed if we couldn't be very

successful next year," he said .The same could be said for Old Carey .With stars Andrew Kent, Allister Parton,Travis Bull and Damian Shutie all no olderthan 23 and with their best football aheadof them, the Panthers will get their chanceto atone sooner rather than later .Let's hope the Panthers, who worked sohard to earn promotion this season, do notsuffer the same fate as last season's grandfinalist Peninsula who dropped back tosection D2 after only one season in D-grade .FootnoteCongratulations to La Trobe University ontaking out the reserve-grade premiership .Under the tutelage of Glenn Taylor, theclub also played in an under 19-gradegrand final and was the best performedside outside the top-four.Yours in football,"The Qwill" P- Wue y

The first quarter of the A Section Grand final gavethe impression it would be a great tussle as theOld Xavs and Old M elburnians registered 8scoring shots each in the first quarter. Only theXavs' accurate kicking gave them a 10 pointadvantage at the first break . The Xavs extendedthe lead to 4 goals at half time but then unleashedtheir full power to kick 8 goals to 2 in the thirdterm. It was only 8 goals in the last term by theOM's that gave them some semblance ofrespectability. This win, 22.14 to 13 .17 for theXavs, extended their monopoly of A Section inrecent years and created their record breakingfifth flag in a five year period . Of the manyexcellent players for the Xavs, Bourke (8), Bowen,Cranage, Wood, Stoney and Blood wereconsidered the best . Clearly the two best sns in A Section, OldT:.elburnians and Colle :;lans, faced one anotherin the grand fmal. By half time Old Melburniansheld a 7 goal lead and Collegians had onlymanaged 1 goal . The Wesley boys fought back totrail by less than 4 goals at the final break butMelburnians raced away again in the final quarterand finished 14 .18 to 7 .19. It was hugecelebrations for the winners as they took their firstA Section prize since their "golden run" of threeconsecutive flags in the top section in 1953, 54and 55 .Best for OM's - Jeremy Nicholls (Jock Nelsonmedallist for best player in the grand final), Susa,Webb, O'Brien, Lovett and T Witts. For Collegians,Pollock, Kerr, Palmer, Kenneally, Bennett andHinchen .Old Trinity received a fright in the last term inthe B Section Grand Final . They looked to have itin the bag with a 8 goal lead at three quarter timebut Uni Blues had other ideas and rattled on 6goals to nothing, finished full of running but ranout of time . Trinity held on 16 .7 to 14.11 . For thewinners, Van Der Hoek, Norman, Sutcliffe,Hatfield, Seuling and Alibon were best . Cavalier,

Kirsanovs, Wilson, Edge, Worsley and Furphywere great for the Blues .

It was a great day for the Ormond Club when they"won the double" in A Section with both seniorsand reserves too strong for Collegians . The maingame saw a brief fight back by Collegians butOrmond were too powerful ; final score 17.11 to

9 .11 . Best players - McCooke, Connell (3),Clarkson, Brown, Gilmore, McDonald (Ormond)and Pollock, Hoyle, Wallace, Schmidt, Ingleton,Galbraith (Collegians) .After an even first half in the B Section GrandFinal, De La Salle surged away in the second halfand won, 22 .17 to The 's 10.10 . Best players;Knuppel, Ronchi, Lowe, Mullins, Mannix, Dwyer(DLS) . Fraser Licked 6 while Peter Green finishedwith 5 for De La . For Therry - Bosanko (5),Biddlestone, Quinn, Matton, Castaldi, Reddick .

Old Haileybury won the double in C Section andtheir senior team performed as expected byoverpowering Banyule, 23 .20 to 12 .11 . It hadbeen a great season for Old Haileybury and theirbig guns fired in the biggest game of the season -Bingham, Phillips, Lyell, C Gordon, McKenzie,Seccull and Armstrong . For Banyule; Coulson,Holt, Williams, Gill, Sanders and Ladd .

In A Section, Bo ra S1,ie won their secondsuccessive premiership, at the expense ofOrmond, 13 .14 to 6.19 . De La's rise to power inthe late 70's was continuing into the 80's andtheir record of 5 flags out of a possible 8 was asure sign of their dominance .St Bernards' 20 .13 against Ivanhoe's 17.13earned them the B Section flag, their highestVAFA honour since their entry into the VAFA in1963 .Bulleen Templestowe made it two flags in threeseasons when they again won Junior Section One,15 .14 to Fawkner 8 .3. Their strong juniorperformances were bolstering their senior team'sprospects as they finished third in A Section, theirbest effort to date in the VAFA.Therry's emergence as a strong club in amateurfootball was evident as they won both seniors andreserves in D Section. Their senior team easilyaccounted for Thoffirsto~..>n, 19 .19 to 11 .10 .

De La Salle won only their second ASection flagwith a resounding win over Uni Blues, 17 .15 to12 .10 . De La's Brian Bourke also won the J NWoodrow Medal for the A Section Best & Fairestaward topping off a great year for the club. De Lahad been beaten thrice during the season by theBlues .Kew defeated St Kilda CBC, 22 .10 to 15 .7, to takeout the H J Stewart Premiership Cup in C Section .Wayne Blay, Kew spearhead, took his tally to 73 inthe Grand Final to win the section goalkickingaward . Best players - Toogood, Smith, Blay (5),Jackomos, Fletcher, O'Farrell (Kew) and Kellaway,Jennings, White (4), Curry, Coates, Carroll (StKCBC) .

University Blacks dealt a blow to Ormond's

chances of four successive A Section flags as theyrecorded a 12 .10 to 9 .14 victory . The Blacks heldsway from quarter time and although Ormondnarrowed the gap at the final break, the Blackswere determined to gain the ultimate prize, a greateffort following their runners-up title in B Sectionthe season before.Old Trinity earned the right for promotion to ASection for the first time after defeating MonashBlues in the B Section Grand final, 13 .10 to10 .18 . Phillip Pryor (Collegians) won his secondsuccessive G T Moore Medal for the B Section Best& Fairest while C Moore (. ),ash -Aues) was theleading goalkicker in the grade.

Old Pcradi= :, won its third successive A Sectionpremiership when they narrowly defeated Old

Xaverians, 10 .11 to 9 .13. Paradians had becomevery powerful indeed and appeared well placed tochallenge the mighty teams of Old Scotch andUniversity Blacks of seasons past who had wonfour consecutive A Section flags (Scotch1931,32,33,34 and Blacks 1946/47/48/49) Ofcourse the Blacks had in fact been reigningpremiers for six seasons given that there was nocompetition from 1940 to 1945 due to the SecondWorld War and they had also won the premiershipin 1938 and 1939 .In B Section, University Blacks, 10 .13 defeatedCommonwealth Bank 8 .5 to win their first BSection flag and the right to return to A Sectionafter a brief absence .

~:Id 9.19 to Uni Dlues 9 .14 saw athrilling finale to the A section season and forOM's, that made it two in a row (1953/54) withboth premierships at the Blues expense . M JDavidson from Hampton Rovers won the J NWoodrow Medal for Best & Fairest and J D(Duncan) Anderson (Old Melburnians) had anadditional reason to celebrate as he headed the ASection goalkicking with 75 goals . This was to bethe fifth consecutive season that DuncanAnderson headed the goalkicking list . In1950/51/52/53 he wore the University Bluescolours and in this, the premiership season, hehad returned to his old school connection.

After actioning their right to challenge, OldScotch Collegians won their fourth successive ASection premiership, the first club to achieve thisfeat, when they defeated the University Blacks'team, 16 .10 to 13 .11 . W E(Bill) Pearson finishedthe season with the remarkable tally of 220 goalsand only the A Section Best & Fairest honourappeared to escape the Scotchies when G Weber, from Brighton Tech Old Boys was awarded themedal .

Greetings from down town Bolton, the

home of the might Bolton Wanderers .

Unfortunately work took me away for the

Grand Final and off to see the Bolton and

Manchester United clash in the English

Premier League . Tough day at the office!

Luckily I managed to conscript 'Iron' Mike

Tyson into his debut for the .D3 scribe .

Well 17 : - ° ,a, Chris

Me . -e : la ielgh.

They certainly too, the drop from D2 in

their stride and did a great job rebuilding

the club . Well done! C® 3 .~er, . : :. _ : to

Rupertswood however when the dust

settles, hopefully they can look back on a

great year with some pride . Have no

doubt that the major issue facing

Rupertswood is the need to progress up

the grades, something they have achieve d

with style .Anyway, here are theM iste r Tyson .

o f

With the predicted weather of 10 degrees, rain and hail a tight tough contest is whatI expected to see and that is what we got .

With the Oakleigh crowd comparingRupertswood with Port Adelaide regardingtheir finals' history, I believed that theywere getting a little to ahead ofthemselves . Rupertswood had come toplay. With the Oakleigh crowd targetingWhitehead trying to throw him off hisgame, he soon shut them up by kickingthree goals in ten minutes to get the ballrolling. Wasted opportunities by Oakleighin front of goals proved costly and we sawRupo take a goal lead at qtr time .Rupos backline was under the pump inthe first 15 minutes with skipper Collins

leading the way II Iacross half bac k

and proving a

headache for the usually boiste rous Chris

Moore .The pressure got to Rupo with seniorplayers dropping powder puffs in front ofgoal when the heat was on and thisproved costly as Bromley showed hisclass kicking a team lifting goal justbefore halftime . The momentum hadstarted to swing Oakleigh way just upbefore the half time break .

The talk over a few soft drinks at the mainbreak was that Rupo had no hope and itwas a matter of time before the game wasbusted open .The heat was as on as Oakleigh turned upthe pressure cooker and started to climbover the top of the boys from Sunburykeeping them to 1 point for the quarter.Oakleigh again couldn't convert in frontof goal missing sitters from dead in front ,

the eventual Vic Zanin medallist ChrisHogan couldn't kick over a jam tin from aset shot 20mtrs out and had the balltouched on the line .I wandered over to the Oakleigh huddle atthe last change of ends to find a rathersubdued Chris Moore asking Ash Kitts tomake the cream rise one last time, andthat he did . With Kitts on fire and SimonCammis providing plenty of drive of halfback Oakleigh were home . Yet again theysquandered opportunities in front of goalbut they were $ 1 .01 on the sportsbet asRupo failed to fire across half forward .The last five minutes seeming to provideas much hype as Jana Pitman's kneeinjury but Rupo just couldn't get theirneck in front . The end result was the cupwasn't going to Sunbury and the Oakleig

h boys showed why they finished on top o fthe ladder. Commiserations to

Rupertswood that last hurdle was too

high but with the success of their U/19's

they have a strong future in front of them .

As for Oakleigh let the good times roll

enjoy the moment and let the champagne

First year with the VAFA . Previous stints at SFL and VFL . Has adapted to VAFA football extremely well

and will no doubt be one of the umpires "in the mix" for Sunday's match . Excellent rapport with

players and clubs .

Geoff Caulfield (Blue 17)Former AFL field and boundary umpire, also in his first year with the VAFA . Has brought a

vast amount of experience and has acquitted himself extremely well in season 2004 . Geoff's ability

to communicate effectively and excellent knowledge of the game have made him one of th e

best umpires in 2004 .

Albie Firley (Red 5)Albie has demonstrated in 2004 that there is no substitute for hardwork, positive attitude and the

willingness to give his best . 2004 has seen Albie "blossom" and put himself in line for higherrecognition .

M ichael Sneddon (Yellow 15)This veteran umpire has shown the benefit of consistent performances and a "no-nonsense"

approach, which coupled with his outstanding fitness levels sees him once again in contention forone of the "big 2" appointments.

Finally it's overThe fat lady is preparing to sing "IT' SOOOOVVEEERRR" to finally close the 200 4season, for some umpires it has been a twelvemonth odyssey for others - well, slightly less .However at 5 :00pm on Sunday we can all, as agroup let the hair down (if we have any) and prayit's not going to happen again for another fourmonths .CelebrationsCongratulations to the 2004 senior premiers -MHSOB, University Blacks,Bulleen/Templestowe, Oakleigh and OldWestbourne and of course to the umpires whoofficiated . All the best to the competing clubs thisweekend, and to "our top four" who thoroughlydeserve their appointments .A tale of two Richards

1 . Richard Evans at Sandringham last week didthe noble thing of offering to look after thevaluables bag which had all the seniorumpires' wallets, watches, keys and phones .That was fine until the end of the game andafter the presentations had taken place, whenin the rooms the umpires had not seen thisbag produced or even Richard. The bag wasn'tavailable because it was in Richards's car. Doyou think that is a problem? It is if Richardhas driven back to Elsternwick for the night, after a quick call to Richard he had to do theU-turn and return to Sandy.

2 . Richard Eastwood enjoying the after matchback at the rooms last week, tried to do theright thing and keep under the limit but hedidn't have to worry as Kenny Mc Niece whowears the same jacket took Richard's jacket(with car keys inside) by mistake .Unfortunately Kenny doesn't drive, so thekeys as of Saturday night have not beenreturned and Richard's car was last seenlooking very lonely in the Elsternwick carpark . Poor Richard, this on top of losing hiscasual socks after the game .

BOGWe know that on grand final day it is the job ofthe field umpires to judge the BOG in order for amedal to be presented . Unfortunately Maccafound himself as (in the) BOG prior to the gameat Central Reserve last Saturday . Unfortunately

he needed long stopsin the car park as wellas on the ground .Thanks to Cooky forhis help.Book revie wJust a quick plug for an inspirational book worthchecking out called "The Phoenix Rises" writtenby Mentone Grammar teacher Colin McGill .Colin's battle with adversity and recovery fromtwo medical disasters is truly uplifting. Makesthose niggling little injuries seem trivial . Copiesare available from VAFA headquarters for $20 orcontact David Murray.SociallyRemember to attend the BBQ and Band nightafter the A grade final, let the hair down and gocrazy.Time to say goodbyeAll at the VAFAUA would like to say goodbye andgood luck to the outgoing CEO Phil Stevens as hemoves on to a new stage of his life . Stevo hasalways been a great support to the UmpiresAssociation and umpires in general during histenure. All the best Stevo, we know we'll see youat various VAFA grounds in 2005 and beyond .Thanks for everything .Thank youTo Benny, Jerka, Bob and Shane thanks for yourhard work over the season . Whilst all yourdecisions don't please all of the people all of thetime, it's a tough gig and the umpires appreciatethe time and effort put into it . The support by thelarge team of observers is also worth a mention .Benny and his team couldn't survive without theassistance of these people . To Jason, yes youflogged us at times, but we were fit enough to getthrough our games on the weekend. ThanksJason for your work on the track .To Troupy and Elise for attending to all our littleniggles at training . They could always patch usup and send us on our way. ReviewSenior Grand Final - Old Westlsca raeversus KewOld Westbourne went into the Grand Finalfull of confidence having accounted for theBrowns three times in season 2004, however, with storm clouds looming, it was going to beanyone's match .The first quarter began predictably with Kewgaining the early ascendancy as La Franchiand Mainsbridge took control of their keypositions . The Warriors though, did not readthe script, and after their slow start, began tolift with their key runners in Frankie Pavezand Micky Baulch creating havoc on thewings . With centurion goal kicker JustinHorsburgh being well held by the Browns, theWarriors were forced wide and to kick overhis head . This plan worked well though, andafter some good work from Trav Edwards, theWarriors managed to go into the quarter timebreak 7 points up .A little shell shocked by the Warriorsdetermined play, Kew came out full of fireafter the break, however, they were againbewildered by the Warriors fiercedetermination, and in one of the quarters ofthe season, piled on 6.6 for the quarter to runout to a massive 41 point lead at the majorbreak. The goal spree included a PeterDaicos-like goal by Pavez, where his left footbanana kick was slotted through deep in theleft pocket to the great delight of the 1,000-strong crowd .Westbourne coach Jeff Wilson implored hisplayers to keep attacking the ball in his half

time adc'ress, and it as (:>a)ecte d

that the Kew line up would throw

everything but the ~ -kitchen sink a ttheir younger opponents . However, the cro-was left by what could only be described as"shock and awe" as the young guns withstoodeverything that was presented to them, andwith Hamish Hodgson now dominating themiddle, and Stuart Balloch rising in stature,Westbourne kicked a further four goals to onefor the quarter as Kew all but gave up . Aspectacular leap by Warrior "Jucka"Horsburgh, one of the quarter's highlights, epitomized the Warrior dominance of thegame as the pro-Westbourne crowd waswhipped into a frenzy .In the final quarter, the Warriors tried hard tokick further ahead, but were well held by theBrowns, as Westbourne ran out deservedwinners and D4 premiers by 55 points .The premiership, the first senior flag for theclub, was also the swansong for playingcoach, Jeff Wilson and Warrior veteranDamian Billman after many years of servicefor the club . The win was a fitting tribute tothese great Warriors .

- naving been on the receiving enci of twour Angs during the home and away

season, Old VsTestbourne were not given muchchance to defeat a Kew outfit lined Mth stars .However, Warrior coach Steven "Slim" Leitch, implored his players to be on their game rightfrom the start as their superior fitness wouldassist them overrun an older Kew line uplater in the match .His strategy worked wonders and withWarrior superstar Mark "Millhouse" Aquilinain everything, Kew went into the half timebreak 5 points behind with the work ofJohnston playing a major part in helping hisside keep pace .The second half saw Kew regain theascendancy as Pietersen and Dennis liftedand it appeared as though the Browns wouldrun away with a predictable win . However, once again the Warriors showed why the clubis one that is going places, and with a steelydetermination the likes of Troy Edwards andJarred Mason ensured that the final quar

Completing an was Collegi an s who proved themselves a cut aboveastounding second half of the season, which saw the rest of the competition on the day that reallythe side win fourteen of their last fifteen matches, counts . Had this game been played the day before,De La led at every ch ange on a wint ry afternoon to the result probably wouldn't have differed, but thecomplete one the closest Section One seasons in margin most certainly would . As the scorelinerecent times. bears out, this was anything but a nail-biter asIn soggy conditions that were expected to favour Mark Parrent, new crowd favou ri te Myles Lynch, the underdogs, St Kevins had a lot of the ball in the Adam Fab ri s and John Miles Meda llist Andrewopening term but failed to convert on the board . As Stone ran ramp an t . The Wellers fell behind fromthe crowd continued to bu il d, both sides had the sta rt as key Kions in Ashman , Williams, andplenty of chances to go into the long break with the Elg produced a fine display of physical footy andlead, De La's four s traight giving the favourites a15 point halftime advantage despite having fewer $-chances in front of goal . As the rain continued t

Righetti legend and St i`' °"° 011""Kevins student Sam Ryan slotted a crucial goal to _~give the underdogs a glimmer of hope late in th ethird, before a De La reply gave the minor premiersa 14 point lead heading into the final quart er .Despite having completed a miraculous forty-point Caulfield

Not willing to succumb to the satisfaction o fmerely making the Grand Final, SKOBs pushedon, with most of the final term played on thegrandstand wing. quick ball movement to keep the oppositionscoreless at quarter time . It was more of the samein the second quarter, though Camberwell didmanage to slot a couple of goals through, inresponse to the Lions' four .Collegians half time lead of 57 points was morethan enough, but the Lions were hungry for moreand finished with six times as many scoring shotsas the hapless Wellers . Rigzin, Shanks and Taylorkept on plugging away for Old Camberwell butcould be forgiven for not giving a continental byhalfway through the 3rd quarter as the game waswell and truly shot. All that remained was for theco-captains in Stone and Michael Rose to hold thepremiership cup aloft in front of an adoring Crowd .Section 3Old Carey had the game by the scruff of the neckat halftime on Saturday as an 11 point lead inatrocious conditions meant so much more . Still, the OC were to come to rue their failure to convertin the lst half as they only managed four moreshots for the game, whilst a rejuvenated Paradeturned it on when it really counted . Spinner maysome key positional changes with Peck into theruck and Morrissey to FF, as well as Whyley andHussey swapping from CHB to CHF. After a cruelbroken arm to Giddings, Jason Berthet steppedinto the breach and produced a stellarperformance to win the Peter Harris Medal . TheRaiders increased their pressure and started tocreate several Old Carey errors. At the final change, the complexion of the gamehad changed dramatically as the hunters becamethe hunted . Evans had been closely shaded butwas still producing for Old Carey, with Howgateand Niven in good support . They started to worktheir way back into the game and it was very tightin the final minutes until Azza Serafm producedprobably his most memorable moment in footy .With a block from Peck, Serafin had a clear path tothe ball and collected deep on the boundary line inthe pocket. A quick glance to the top of the squaresaw no joy there, so Serafm turned on a sixpenceand snapped truly from a near impossible angle .The result was enough to take the wind out of theCarey sails . Final margin - Parade by 8 points .Section BlueSt Johns would've looked at the skies on Saturday

and thought their prayers had been answered as

the conditions were tailor made for a mud-wrestle .If ever there was a chance of dismantling the

Demons' machine, this was it. However, the raginghot flag favourites has other ideas and their 1st

quarter effort in kicking a winning score before the

lst break was a testament to their focus andsuperior skill . Continuing on from his great seasonin front of the sticks, Ridgway managed 4 snags ona trying day for forwards, and Brad Meehan endedup with the John Simpson Medal for his BOGefforts .Whilst Bentleigh had dominated the first 3quarters, they still only lead by 23 points at thefinal change . The eternal optimist would've pointedout that St Johns were only 4 kicks behind, butthat was the equivalent of light years on such ashocking day for footy . In the end it matterednought as the Demons registered the lst goal inthe last quarter and romped away to a 50 pointwin . Carmody and Magee were shining lights forthe JOCs who had performed brilliantly to makethe grand final but, as suspected, were not quiteable to match the Bentleigh boys .Many thanks to all my club correspondents for theseason including Ben Carbonaro (Rupertswood),Andy Dalrymple (Whitefriars) and Mark Spinoso(Old Parade), as well as Peter Mitchell (Peninsula)and Shane Regan (Mazenod) . Your input andefforts for the season are much appreciated, andthis column wouldn't have been the same withoutyou . Cheers and good luck to everyone in 2005 .Section RedThe Fitzroy Reds completed a flawless season offootball last weekend, defeating La TrobeUniversity by 37 points in the Red Section GrandFinal . Undefeated in season 2004, Fitzroy led atevery change, defeating the university side for thefourth time this year. Recipient of the Section'sSharpshooter and Best & Fairest Awards duringthe week, Fitzroy's Kane Maghamez was simplyinspirational kicking six goals to take his seasontally to 111 . The grand final victory topped off whathas been an incredible two years for the solidforward, Maghamez bagging 208 goals over thepast 18 months with Fitzroy .After rain played havoc around metropolitanMelbourne on Saturday, the skies fined up forSection Red's Sunday afternoon grand final, favouring the minor premiers . La Trobe had comewithin 8 points of the Reds early in the season ona damp and heavy pitch, and were only going to becontenders if the heavens opened .On a relatively dry oval Fitzroy clearly outclassedtheir opposition, Bombaci, Zika and Greenwood allamongst the best. The Red's Connor Dullard wasawarded the Max Lyon Medal for being best onground, while Ulph, Lambert, Robertson andDavies were named as best for La Trobe .

"Your Coaches' .4ssociation "

.

Umpiring a grand final must surely be one ofthe highlights of an umpire's life . Like thefootballers participating, it requiresdedication and commitment ; an unflinchingself belief; an enduring passion; and asustained fire in the belly .To prepare for a grand final is not easy. Youexperience an array of feelings and emotionsthat are foreign . From the moment youreceive that seemingly elusive appointment,to the playing of the national anthem, toholding the ball aloft to start the game, to thefinal siren sounding, you will be enveloped byimmense feelings of excitement, pride, anticipation and hopefully satisfaction . Iremember all too well the palms of my handsbeing so sweaty driving to my first grandfinal, I could hardly grip the steering wheel .To my mind, the singularly most importantfactor in umpiring grand finals ispreparation . Physical and mentalpreparation. This is what builds confidenceand ensures success . Like any significantchallenge or performance in life, the betterprepared you are the more likely things are togo your way. Luck seems directlyproportionate to preparation . Outstandingperformances in any field often appear to begiven ivit.h consummate ease, yet really theybelie the hours of painstaking preparationendured beforehand .To any grand final aspirant, here are mytips :1 . The obvious ones are: correct diet, right

amount of sleep, good level of fitness andgood people skills .

2 . The less obvious ones are :

a) Simulate match scenarios . I wouldalways go down the park the daybefore and imagine every conceivableskill drill and situation that couldpossibly arise on a football field .Rehearse what an umpire should do.Simulate where to run and what actionto take. Then when somethingexpected or unexpected occurs you will

be well placed to react appropriatelyand make the right decision as thoughyou knew it was about to occur.

b) Know the rules intimately. Your soundknowledge of the rules should bcrefreshed from cover to cover the nighibefore . (The rule book used to adorrmy bedside table throughout th(season!!) .

c) Avoid emotional disturbances whethethey be work related, personal odomestic . Keep distractions tominimum. Have a clear head .

d) Expect the unexpected, e .g . a countbehind the play incident; runner in 4metre area ; umpire not hearing sireetc .

e) Sweat the small stuff. Attention tdetail on seemingly insignificarmatters is the polish that separatcyou from the others . Ensure t1-whistle is soaked so the pea resonateat the right pitch . Make sure the laceon your runners are white, If timinute detail is catered for, the rewill foll ow .Umpire the same way you haveyear. After all that is what got y (here. The only difference will be t1intensity and obviously the stakes, byour running to position, yointerpretation, decision making aiexecution should be no different .

0

g) Guard against peaking too early afeeling as though you have umpirtwo quarters before the game hbegun. Relaxation techniques aexercises are a must.

h) Most of all, enjoy the experience .i) Lastly, look up into the sky and tha

that lucky star because you ne,know when or if it will shine on yagain .

The last column for the year, and the most important as thenaming of the Trainer of the Year is announced . Firstly,

thank you to all the people and clubs who nominated theirtrainers for Trainer of the Month and thus Trainer of theYear.

The winner was very hard to pick with so many goodnominations, but with very good input from Rob Duncan(Club Warehouse), the sponsor of the award, and theVAFA it is with great pleasure that I announce that the

"Trainer of the Year" for 2004 is Stacey Dimitracopoulosfrom the St . Bedes Mentone Tigers Football Club.Stacey won the August/September Trainer of the Month sothis will be a big shock to both her and her club . The awardwill be presented to Stacey at the VAFA's AGM in

December. Not only has Stacey been a superb trainer, buther club (St Bedes Mentone Tigers) has been a goodsupporter of Club Warehouse by ordering their medicalsupplies through the sponsor. This is one of the criteria

considered for the award.Thanl-s very much to Club Warehouse for its sponsorshipof the Trainer of the Year Award.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those clubswho have contacted me to comment on what a great thingthe column is for both trainers and their clubs . It has beena great way of getting to pass on information from both theVAFA Executive, the VAFA Trainers' Association andmedical people e .g. Dr George Janko, SM A

Just because the season is now over, the work put in thisyear by your Trainers' Association will continue through

the off season, so if you have any queries aboutaccreditation or re-accreditation or anything else to do withthe role of trainers in the VAFA please email me and I willdo my best to get back to you with the right information .

Have a great time off and don't forget the email addresschriskl5Cbigpond .co m

Editor's note. Congratulations Chris on producing the
