Having the oppo rt unity to write the editorial for theAmateur Footballer this weekend gives me the opportunity

to do a something of update about the VAFA in 2006 .

As I go about my day to day activities, I am asked

constantly "how are the Amateurs going? "

I almost invariably reply that, in my opinion, the VAFAcontinues to go from strength to strength . This is shownnot only by the standard of football through all the grades- as good, if not better than it has ever been . It is alsoshown by the fact that our Under 19 competition growsstronger and more popular, and by the fact that our ClubXVIiI is the envy of other leagues, in that it provides theopportunity to many "part time" footballers to continue topasticipate . In 2006, we have seen clubs which have beenpromoted making the most of their opportunities in highergrades, and in recent weeks, we have also seen clubs at thelower end of the ladder recording good wins to givethemselves the chance to avoid relegation . Undoubtedly,we have to develop to remain strong, but it seems to methat our principal task is to maintain the attributes that the

VAFA presently has - providing excellent football at alllevels for all who want to play, in an atmosphere thatencourages participation both on and off the field, andproviding the opportunity for all players to fulfill theirpotential as footballers .

We complete this year's representatiye football thisweekend with our Under 23 game against South Australia .

While the results in 2006 have not been as good as wemight have hoped, the strength of representative footballcontinues to grow. The WAAFL Under 23 team defeated usquite soundly in June, and although that result, if taken inisolation, is somewhat disappointing - we play to win - thatis a much better result than the extremely one sided resultthat occurred some years ago at Subiaco when WA failed ._score a goal (and which led to the development of theUnder 23 competition), and which in turn led to t ,opportunity for an All-Australian side to tour Ireland at t' eend of 2005 - another venture that the Australian AmateurFootball Council intends to continue. Similarly, the fact that

our Under 19 side was beaten by an AFLO Under 21 side in!trought breaking conditions in Brisbane was, in some

ways, secondary to thefact that we now have theopportunity to establish anongoing relationship withthe AFLQ, and to provid eour Under 19 players wit hstrong representative football each year . Our only successwas in the game against the Southern Football League, under master coach George Voyage, and then we only justscraped in .

We are committed to continuing representative football, asit provides our players, and in particular our Under 19 andUnder 23 players with the opportunity to play at the highestlevel possible with in the Amateurs, to showcase theirtalents and to go back to their clubs as better players .

Enough of the boasting about the VAFA - but then again, why shouldn't we? Good luck to all our C-D4 clubs who areplaying today, in games that will almost invariably impacton final or relegation (or in many instances, both - thebeauty of the system), and good luck to each of the teamsand the players playing for their state at Sportscover Arena .May the better side win, although it is clear that football, and i i ' u ir amateur football, will be the winner .

A training camp at Jan Juc last weekend has ma cplayers strong in their resolve to play for each otherand their state .

Injuries to some key players have forced achanges to the side, lessons will have been lesome height and marking power is sure :a side that will be keen to turn the small v tag they arenow wearing back into a Big V .

; Make no mistake however, the Bob Cross led SA willnot make things easy for the home side . Consideringthey are young and still c doping and don't have thesame physical size as . ieir' counterparts, they willbe encouraging their player run and use their skills,vi,iich should mean a free running open style ofto 3-1 from both sides well suited to the vast

Ordinarily it's the premiership quarter which sees winning sidesmaking their moves . However on the weekend, it seemed mostwaited until the final change to click into gear. Is this a case of mid-season fitness fading for some sides? All and sundry agreed that Parkdale were too good for The OC onthe day. After winning the toss and kicking with the wind in the 1stquarter the Wellers lead by 12 points at the first break . From thenon it was all Parkdale as they won the following 3 terms by 5, 4 and8 goals respectively. For Old Camberwell, Mark Jury and SteveHarrison were hard workers all day, whilst Ben Craven wasswitched from the backline to provide a focal point with 3 goals . TheVultures feasted in the final ter mNorth Old Boys/St Pats College belted out the song and drank thebar dry after a crucial win at Gillon Oval . It was a hard fought victorywhich was built on the back for 4 goals from Brandt Fleming andthe continued form of Glenn Maxton and their two Had Team of theYear boys in Heath Maplestone and Scott Sleep . After several goodreserves performances, Lachlan Batt shone in his return to theRovers senior side, and was ably assisted by Sam Parkinson andGerrard Woods.A huge crowd flocked to Tgedand to watch STBMT put OldParadians to the sword, Brenton Schwarze debuted for the homeside (supported by his AFL-playing brothers in Troy and Ben), andhis team-mates didn't disappoint, racking up a 116 point win .Midway through the second term, Parade were only a goal adrift, but sparked into action when Luke Wintle left the ground and wenton a rampage thereafter. Anthony Scafidi put in a stellarperformance with 37 touches, shaded only for BOG honour by PaulWintle who ruck-roved tirelessly all day. On a dark day for thevisitors, Brett Dintinosante justified his return to the seniors with 3goals, and Adam Curran put in another outstanding performance .Monash are well and truly in their mid-season slump after AshRussell's 8 goals for Ormond sent them packing by 40 points . TheMenders again started brilliantly with Mick Miller and SimonKelleher dominating . In the second and third terms, Monashchipped away to within striking distance, thanks again to AaronWilliams in the ruck, Michael Davidson off half-back and TheFreak', switching into the middle to generate a bit of run, finishingwith 4 goals for the game . Still, once they were threatened, Ormondsettled and kicked away to assert their superiority.Outrageous scenes at Brunswick Street where AJAX refused to givein when all seemed lost and pinched a miraculous victory from thejaws of defeat (I've been waiting all season to throw that one in) .With 3 players off for the game in the first quarter, another off tohospital, and looking atfielding 16 fit players for the second had, theJackas seemed out of calculations . The Reds had a slight breezeadvantage going into the last and, only trailing by 4 points, wereprimed to finish off the better. With minutes remaining, DamienRitchie had bagged 3 and Tim Davis was back to his best as theReds surged to a 22 point lead. Then it all went pear-shaped .. .. .. .From out of nowhere, AJAX turned the tables and took total control .Jason Israelshon and Elliot Janover proceeded to launch attac k

14

after attack and, whilstAaron Bloom's ne i bootswere proving troublesome,Anthony Rosen snapped amiracle goal but theproverbial dagger throughthe Redders heart wasdelivered by debutant Warren Sevel . In a Boys Own Annual display,Sevel marked strongly and calmly slotted a Stephen Kemahan-esque mongrel from 30 m out to snatch the lead, and the all-important 4 points. Ouch!!! !TipsIt'll be a desperate Rovers unit hosting a Monash side which isslipping out of calculations. Can the Students arrest their (negative)development? Methinks not - Hampton Rovers by 21 points .Parade will need to bolster their ranks with some inclusions ifthey're to knock off the ever-improving NOBSPC . If they can't pullthis one off, they'll be 2 games and % adrift . Massive stakes here, and I think the ghosts of Garvey will howl as Parade win a nailbiterby 5 points.Parkdale on the up, Reds on the down, but smarting from lastweek's shattering loss . Can the Reds steady? I think they prefer thewhite shorts and should salute over the Vultures by 2 goals .Ormond should have the midfield advantage and superiorfirepowerto overcome the OC at the GBO by 25 points .Finally, the Match of the Season (thus far) looms large on Sundayas an MAX unit, which is continuing to overcome injuries andsilence the doubters, faces their biggest test against the Tigers . TheTop Two, at HQ, is bound to be watched by a massive home crowd .Will it be enough??? . .. .. . Nah, they'll be game, but the Tigers willshow everyone in C section just how good they really are, and finishup 34 point winners .IV ;oosRovers, NOBSPC, Wellers, Fitzroy and STBM T

M Dnash Blues congratu? "zilTin' '-ron'ii :Ogames today inthe turquoise and silver. Tinx is a terrific ball player who loves itwhen the going is at its toughest and he can burrow in andcreate havoc . Well done Tinx on thi> great achievement and mayyou grace the Frearson Oval i many more games.Congratulations to Paul le on his 100th Senior gamefor Si Bedes/M entOne Tiyc, : last Saturday. Rat's return to theTigers coincided with the improved Tiger fortunes in 2006 . TheTigers' 2004 Club Best & Fair( t winner, Rafs ability andcourageous style has endeared him to his fans at Mentone.Joining him this Sunday for their Senior games are Rat'slittle brother ifliDhaelt__ .,' . : and ___ :'Head' K insella.Mouse, like a 'frangipani in the sun' has earnt a number of VAFARepresentative jumpers, as well as the Tigers Best and FairestAward in 2002 & 2005 . Kinna's journey towards 100 seniorgames with the Tigers has been longer but just as eventful . Headplayed with the Tigers from 1992-1998 when his journey leftBrindisi Street for interstate, overseas and higher VAFA gradesbefore returning in 2006 . A quiet, unassuming type on field andoff, Kinna's experience and leadership qualities have shonethrough as he strives to drive the Tigers forward this season .Well done to all three terrific 100 game players from all thesupporters at Brindisi Street.Chris Hosking and Sam Butcher played their 100th games lastweek for NUBSPC against Hampton Rovers. Hosk arrived in2001 from Stawell, establishing his spot in the seniors andbecoming known as the best full back in B-grade (some said theVAFA) . Since moving to CHB, he has controlled games with hismarking and set ups. Not content as one of the competition'sbest defenders, Hosk tried up forward last year, and dominated ."If only we had a Hosk at each end" was a common cry . Now inhis fourth year as VC, Hosk has had another stellar season, asacknowledged by State selectors . He has been one of our bestthis decade and is also one of the most popular blokes at theclub . Well done to the Kildare Kid . Sam Butcher also arrived in2001 (via Newman College), becoming a vital team memberduring the famous Juggernaught era . His dodging and weavingruns through the midfield were a joy to watch, and he quicklybecame the coaches pet of Herald Sun journalist MarkRobinson, Robbo was so moved my his midfield maestro thatwhen asked who his favourite player was he whispered in hishusky voice, 'definitely Butch" . Sam broke through to become aregular senior player as a tagger, and whilst unpopular withsome high profile B & C grade midfielders, he has beeninvaluable for the team . Sam's work off field is something tobehold, as the driving force behind the new improved COBswebsite. Congrats on the century, Sam .

knows that does not equate to getting the four points .Oakleigh did enough to knock off Williamstown athome, but will need to play better today in what loomsas a danger match for the Krushers, Peter Holdencontinued his good form against Willy, and he willappreciate the large surrounds of the La Trobe ground .I have a suspicion that La Trobe will be ready 'for thismatch . Ludeman is due for a big match and I think LaTrobe can cause an upset, especially if Bromley andMcKenzie's influence can be limited . La Trobe by 8points .

Peninsula OB $1,33 v Werribee AFC $3 .1 0Peninsula senior coach Mark Glenn's masterstrokemove of star forward Shaun Payze to full back in thesecond half last Saturday worked wonders, but I thinkhe might be back and roaming around the forward linetoday. Peninsula made hard work of ivanhoeAssumption for three quarters before a dominant ninegoal to one last quarter gave them an easy win . JamesCoghlan played well in the boggy conditions as did JoshDavis and Eiv Bowen . Werribee had a heartbreakingloss against Glen Eire and will fancy their chances of anupset against the top side today, having already beatenthem earlier in the year. Not sure where Dean Whittenwas last Saturday, but if Werribee are a chance, theywill need him playing as the Lee's cannot do it allthemselves . The most interesting aspect of today forthe boys from Werribee might be if they can make itback to the Racecourse Hotel in Werribee before thecover charge starts at 10 :00 pm . Peninsula to getrevenge on Werribee and win by 38 points .

The half time score . 8 .8 to7 .8 in Glen Eira's favour was due mainly to anexcellent first half by Richie Gilmore . one of the mostconsistent performers in this section . An overall

Major supporter sorganisers with is event are our own T-Supervisor and his wi` ~Rob and Kerryn have had .irst hand experience ithe Neonatal Unit at the RCH when their dauylittiElise was born in March last year . Unfortunately itwas not to be a happy ending as little Elise lost herbattle with a serious spinal injury after only 17 daysof life . The Elise Sneddon Foundation has been setup in her memory. The Family Fun day is seeking notonly a big crowd, but as many sponsors as possibleto assist with the fundraising and success of the day .There are various levels of sponsorship packagesavailable, so if you as part of the VAFA family have afew bucks to chip in, contact Rob on 0423 022 312or email elisefoundation@optusnet .com .a uA worthy cause !

Y i~i the rep game o ntr, :s week we have no : .and B Section games which allc,rs tha seniorsquad of umpires to filter down through thelower sections . This is a good opportunity forboth clubs and umpires to get used to eachother, if teams are looking at finals aspirationsthey can take the time to get to know eachother, look for the way teams play a certainstyle, and teams, the way umpires allow thegame to progress . All this will enhance future( nes and avo confusion come finals .

you get home?" "When I go out" wa s'rai i's reply . "So you will be home early!" was

A bit of nasty luck for Phil Callil running in agame with Max Wittman at Toorak Park lastweek . As the coin toss was about to take placeon the ground, Max's son and his mate weremucking around with a grid-iron ball nearby . Asone of the lads let fly with a place kick Phil justhappened to turn around and from about ametre away copped one fair and square in th e

. . . well you can guess, are your eyeswatering? Phil went down in a screaming heapyelling blue murder at the culprit . Was that hisumpiring partner Max suggesting that heshould stop rubbing them and just count them?He recovered in time to umpire the game . Wehope that Phil has enough kids in his familynow, as any future prospects in that area maybe compromised .

The Hawkies record a good win again :-~ an injurydepleted Power House whilst Box Hill P!orth return toform with a thumping win over North Brunswick . A twogame gap has opened up between 5th and 6th andwhilst still plenty of games to be won, the likes of Syndaland Albert Park might have to win all 7 from here tomake the finals !

Revie w

With over 20 players unavailable, Power House were upagainst it as they met an in form and injury freeHawthorn . The House couldn't get into the game with SAvery doing the job on Edwards . Lauletta starred upforward for the Hawks with 7 whilst Hill and Hasler werethe best for the House in a game they will quickly putbehind them .

Clinker of a game when Eltham travelled to Albert Park .The Turtles managed to hold sway for most of the daybefore a defiant Falcons outfit stole the lead late only forit to be snatched again by the Turtles! Great game!Blagrove led from the front with 5 goals whilst Galvinwas again in great form . Ryan and McIndoe were thestandouts for the Falcons .

Morale boosting win for Eley Park as they accounted forRichmond by 6 goals . The Sharks' form had droppedaway in recent weeks however nothing like a good into get the spirits firing . Broadbear and Creswell were theSharks' stars best whilst Nuske continued his fine formwith 6 goals for Richmond . Once again, the 13 goal tallywas a positive for Richmond .

Box Hill North recorded a big win over North Brunswickwith the size of the defeat the main surprise . Marcakisstarred for BHN who were also well served by thereturning Penny who slotted 6 goals . The grand veteranBoudoloh was the best for North .

Finally, Bulleen contined their march for the four as theyaccounted for Syndal Tally he . Good start for the Sinnershowever they were gradually overhauled by the hometeam . Classic 8 point game! Fradkin was great upforward with seven gaols whilst Kellett also starred forthe victors . Bingham Was again amongst the best forSyndal .

Pr e

Match of the day sees Eltham host Box Hill North. A bitof a scare for the Turtles last week, however good side s

42

i those

rcue-stances . Gr, :return to form for BH Nhowever bumping intoEitham at this point isnot the preferre doption . Riscalla and Galvin are the eni! nes for thesesides however the Turtles forward line is awesome andshould get them the points .

Power House travel to North Brunswick looking to makeamends for a rare lapse last week . One ordinary day canbe consigned to the waste bin, particularly when theform prior had been incredibly consistent . On the otherhand, North served up their first shocker for the seasonas unavailability's hit the squad . It has been a seasonthat has never quite kicked for the Brunswick boys andalas hard to see it happening this week, House for me .

Hawthorn host Syndal and will be trying to avoid the bigmatch hangover from last week . The Hawks season hasbeen building and with a low injury count, pressure atthe selection table has been immense . Syndal have beenpretty good all year without ever being able to get a bigrun on. . .a ks for mine .

Bulleen host Eley Park in a game that a win willstrengthen their spot in the four. The return of a coupleof stars won't hurt their case either. Great to see theSharks fire up for a win last week as the season wasthreatening to get out of control . Hard to make it two ina row form here though, Bulleen for mine .

Finally, Albert Park host Richmond . The Falcons almostpulled of the unthinkable as they led late against Eltham .It is a long haul for them to make finals form herehowever it is certainly not out of the question. They willwin this week .

u,, . - wig just. They held on by 4-points againstMHSOB with Dylan Moore in everything and Skipper Damien Cerantonioleading from the front. SBMT took control of their game against LaTrobe Uni kicking 8-goals to I in the second half after only leading by 3points at half-time, with the Swayn boys featuring in the best players .Ajax held off a determined Emmaus for only their second victory, bothagainst Emmaus, while Richard Keane's 8 goal haul saw Ormond defeatBentleigh .

PreviewOnly seven games to go and already the top four looks set in place . Ajax, after coming off only their second win, they may find Old Ivanhoe atough task, especially with Old Ivanhoe coming off such a fantasticvictory of the ladder leaders. The likes of Frost and Fridman should seeBentleigh take the points at home against MHSOB, while Ormondshould have no trouble against Emmaus, despite Emmaus's JeremyChun and Simon Mills gallant performances the week before . SBMTnow eyeball Oakleigh on the top of the ladder, with only percentage nowseparating the two, and this battle for top place should be intriguingover the final rounds . The SBniT juggernaught will roll on against OldEssendon this weekend as will a slightly wounded Oakleigh against LaTroba, so for the time being they will remain where they are .Please send match info/social events to al_vafa@hotmail .com

UNDER 19 18MReviewNo upsets and large margins was the order of the day in Section Blue asthe chasm between the top four and the rest grew ever larger, Mazenodventured out to the lovely surrounds of Hampton and the game was overat the first break . Mazenod would have been determined to make a goodstart to the game following some poor starts of late and they came outlike men possessed scoring 8 goals in the first quarter with some goodrunning football . The well oiled machine that is Mazenod decided to callit a day with 28 goals to their name . They had 12 goal scorers led byBoger who kicked 8 and Klavins with 5, and in an excellent team effortthey were ably led by Johnson, Stanley, and Smith . Old kientoniansasserted their authority early in their game against Parkdale with somestrong tackling and superior use of the footy through the corridor.Mitchell, Thompson and Fairbanks dominated across half back and shutthe Vultures completely out of the game while Speers and Prowse werelively up forward despite being outnumbered. Old Mentonian on-bailersled by Campbell, Moon and Wilton continually put the ball forward aswell as nullifying their opponents and this team effort saw them to 55point win . Both De La and Old Haileyburians had easy wins overOakleigh and Monash respectively .

PreviewGame of the round billing sees a top four clash between De La and OldMentonians taking place at Darling Park . Only percentage separates thetwo teams in what should be a high-class affair, however, with the likesof Gill and Kovarik in top form and the fact that it is being played at DeLa, they should take the points in a close game . Old Haileyburianscurrently look invincible and with players like Criticos, Johnson,Dolman, and Wright backing up every week they are an extremely goodunit. They always have an even spread of goal kickers and rarely rely onthe one individual to win, a sure sign of a good team and Hampton willbe their next victim this week . Mazenod will have little trouble withOakleigh at home, while Powerhouse/South Mornington should givethemselves every chance of beating Monash at home and I believe theywill notch up their first win amidst chaotic scenes as they celebrate theirfirst'non-bye'four points. Parkdate have a week off .Please send match info/social events to al_vafa@hotmail .com

19'"EDIRupo get back on the winners list, as New sink lower at the home of theAshes. The Woodsmen held the lead at every change, running out 19point victors, Jared Pretty dabbed five for the winners, with Travis Smithreceiving the 'Best On' honours. Kew's only shining light was NathanMonaco, up forward kicking 7 . Aquinas hosted the Bullants, who aredesperately trying to hold fourth spot . The lead was held by both sidesat different stages, but Aquinians walked off smiling . Chris Williamskicked 2 in the low scoring affair . Dan Tonelli (3) and Rowan Matz werestandouts for the Bullants . Ligris booted 6 more as the Reds bouncedback from last week's loss, beating a very competitive Lions side -within 8 points at the final break. Therry have been up and down all year, but should be happy to be sitting just outside the 4 on percentage . Aninaccurate Westbourne took their 4th win of the season against the OldSaints in what could have been more than a 46 point belting, AnthonyWhyte kicked 5 for the Westies, while Chris Ford booted a bag of 7 forthe Old Saints . With 7 rounds to play, it's time for all sides to startinghitting their straps for that final straight. The Old Saints host a revivedRupo, but I think the home side will take home the goodies this week . Alandslide as Aquinas belt New in an obliteration . The Reds host theBullants who will be competitive but won't have enough come the last .The Reds by 17 points, where the forwards from either side will steal theshow. Finally the Xavs host the Westies and I'm picking that it'll be awaste of costly petrol for Westbourne, with the Xavs taking control . 5goals Therry put the feet up and sit on the couch .bernecich@netspace .net .au

With four rounds to play, the shape of the top four teamsin each section is becoming clearer. It would seem thereare three safely ensconced sides in Section 1 andSection 2 . In Section 3 the top two sides seem safe .My Round 11 success rate was 80% .

ReviewSection 1Old Xaverians built their lead over St Bede's IMentoneTigers by more each quarter, before winning by theHeinz margin . . .57 points . For the Xaverians, SamSheedy was active up forward .At half time, top side Prahran led defending premiers StKevin's by 11 points . The second half saw Prahranassert superiority as they built their lead to 38 points bygame's end . For Prahran, Dave Butterworth controlledthe forward line, David Green was a good defender andJustin Geri was a creative on ball player . For St Kevin'sgood players included : "The Duck", a .k .a. Paul Hal . 'n,whose four last quarter goals lifted the spirit of his sideas well as Ray. Short and Dominic Dunn .Old Scotch maintained fourth place through their 51point victory over Old Xaverians 2 .Second placed De La Salle returned to the winning listwith a 41 point win over Mazenod .Old Melburnians now lie fifth and could move higherfollowing their 17 point win over the University Blues .Only inaccuracy prevented a bigger win by the O .M .s .

Section 2Whitefriars recorded a meritorious 30 point win over StBernard's who slipped to sixth as a result . St Bernard'sled narrowly at half time and at the final change thescores were level . Their greater desire for the ball sawWhitefriars edge ahead in the last quarter to take thepoints . For the winners : Clint. Collins, Sam . Ward andPeter O'Brien (5 goals) were best . Best for St Bernard'swere : Gray, Catterall, Briganti and Yoshi .Mt Lilydale continued on their winning way with a 72point victory over Collegians .University Blacks moved back into the four through their52 point win over Old Brighton .Second placed Fitzroy Reds defeated last placedMarcellin by 69 points .Leaders Monash Blues continued on their high scoringand winning way with a 169 point win over TherryPenola .

Emmaus / St Leo's Iremain in the final'srace through their 13point win over Old Scotch .Despite their inaccuracy, Old Trinity was able to inflict a31 point defeat on North Old Boys/ St Patricks .Old Essendon set up their big victory over La TrobeUniversity with six unanswered goals in the openingquarter. Dean Podger, the best afield with nine goals ,kicked all six . Only in the third quarter did the Studentsquell the Section leaders as Old Essendon went away towin by 109 points . Other good players for the winnersincluded : John Hughes, Hugh Lovell and John Knox .Straight kickir^ Beaumaris defeated th- inaccurate Old

*Geelong by 55 points i, . Como Park .

"-" results weren't received . Any discrepancies may be due to non-submission of results by clubs .

56 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

Caulfield Grammarians, who lost to Fitzroy Reds by 33points, can blame inaccuracy for much of their deficit .

Tr litional rivals De La Salle and Old Xaverians meetc, ; = .'averley Oval with the double chance as thespoils of victory . Although Old Xaverians don't seemto be enjoying the dominance of season's past , theyeasily accounted for Be la Salle in Round 3 . Today Iselect them to win again .Old Melburnians should continue on their winningway at the expense of St Bede's /Mentone Tigers, who will not have any extra players available to them .Leaders Prahran should defer Old Xaverians 2. ThePrahran stalwarts seem to he rle to find extra skillwhen under pressure and worth they have asure avenue to goal .Fourth placed Old Scotch journey to play UniversityBlues on the University Oval . The Blues, who won inRound 3 by 19 points have slipped since thenwhereas Old Scotch have improved . Today, I selectOld Scotch to win .St Kevin's should again defeat Mazenod, who wentdown by 43 points in Round 3 .

Section 2Collegians should be strong enough to defeat OldBrighton on the Harry Trott Oval .Monash Blues should be able to defeat the enigmaticSt Bernard's at the University. St Bernard's are myhoodoo side, when I select them they seem to fail . . .and win when I least expect them to be successful .Today they could field Reserve players to top up theirflagging fortunes .Today Marcellin should win their first game for theseason . They can field a full complement of playerswhereas it will be more of the same for theiropponents, Therry Penola .Unless University Blacks field a lot of B Reserveplayers, I can't see them defeating Fitzroy Reds inthe Club XV1 11 version of the "Rouge at Noire Cup" .The Reds do need the win to retain second place justas the Blacks need it to hold fourth . A titanic struggleshould ensue but I favour the Reds to win .Way out east, a potential final will be staged when MtLilydale venture to the plains of Donvale to playWhitefriars, who will be strengthened by playersfrom B Reserve . Mt Li!ydale, who have not lost sinceRound 4 must be due for a lapse (many leadingteams fail around this time of the season!)Whitefriars need victory more to insure they canfinish fourth . They are my selection .

Section 3Old Essendon should win well at home against OldGeelong .North Old Boys/ St Patrick's should score a rare victoryat home by defeating La Trobe University who won bytwo points in Round 3 . Of late North have displayed thebetter form .Old Trinity may take time to settle on the small groundagainst Old Scotch (either Camberwell or St JamesPark!) . however their greater depth of talent should seeTrinity emerge victorious and so hold third place .The winner of the Caulfield Grammarians and Emmaus/St Leo's game will hold fourth place tonight. Caulfield, despite inaccuracy triumphed in Round 4 by seventeenpoints . Caulfield may be stronger today but I still haveconcerns over their match fitness and kicking ability .That said, E .S .L. were none too impressive when I sawthem go down to Fitzroy Reds in Round 4 . At home, Ifavour Caulfield Grammarians .Fitzroy Reds should be able to again defeat Beaumaris, whose form is hard to follow .
