help you learn different tips and tricks to spell well. It will run 1 day per week (2 hours per day) for 6 weeks. Available countywide.

Write Right - This accredited course will help you to

write better. You will learn how to:

Improve your handwriting It will run 2 days per week (2 hours per day) for 8 weeks. Available countywide. You can gain a FETAC Level 2 certificate and can choose to go on to complete a full Major Award at FETAC level 2 as a follow on option.

Basic Maths – This short accredited course will help

you understand everyday maths. It will take the fear out of using maths and give you the confidence to use it in your day-to-day activities. It will run 2 days per week (2 hours per day) for 8 weeks. Available countywide You can gain a FETAC Level 2 certificate and can choose to go on to complete a full Major Award at FETAC level 2 as a follow on option.

Money Matters - Learn how to budget your house-

hold bills and save money. This non-accredited course will run 1 day per week (2 hours per day) for 10 weeks.

Back to Basics – If you feel that you missed out

when at school and would like to brush up on your writing, reading, and every day maths skills, then this accredited course is for you. It will help you build your skills and improve your confidence. You will also learn how to use a computer to send emails and search on the Internet.

The course will run 2 days per week (4 hours per day) for 25 weeks and is available at beginner level (FETAC Level 1) and progression level (FETAC Level 2). Available countywide

Supporting Your Child at Primary School This short non-accredited course will help you:

To prepare for and get the most from the parent-teacher meetings.

To understand school reports The course will run 1 day per week (2 hours per day) for 6 weeks during school times. Available countywide.

FETAC Level and Award Description

Level 1— Signifies achievement of elementary learning, within

a well supported familiar environment. Often people are engaging with learning for the first time. Level 2— Indicates achievement of basic learning. Learners are generally able to carry out familiar routine tasks in well supported environments through building up basic skills and confidence. Level 3— Indicates basic learning across a range of areas, including managing routine text or numerical information of a familiar nature. Learners have demonstrated ability to follow straightforward directions and to take on new tasks. This level is equivalent to the Junior Certificate on the NFQ. Level 4— Is typically associated with introductory level employment. Learners have demonstrated ability to act responsibly and independently and can solve familiar problems well, independently and as part of a group. Expands on skills learned at level 3 and is ideal for progression to Leaving Certificate or level 5. Equivalent to Leaving Certificate on the NFQ. Level 5— Learners have a broad range of knowledge, skill and competence and take responsibility for the nature and quality of work in a managed environment. A Level 5 award signifies capacity to act independently and responsibly in a wide range of contexts. It is an excellent preparation for study at third level. It is also a mandatory requirement for some employment areas e.g. Childcare. Level 6— Signifies a high level of skill and fluency. Complex problems can be solved taking account of specialised knowledge across a broad area of expertise. Community Education

Service & Grants

The Community Education Service provides support to community groups and voluntary organisations with the provision of grants. This grants scheme provides tuition hours or financial assistance towards tuition to groups that wish to run adult learning programmes in their own areas.

Applications are invited from community groups and voluntary organisations 3 times a year. These dates will be advertised in local press and on our website.

Priority is given to courses/programmes which aim to work with individuals and groups that experience particular barriers to participation in adult learning and in particular those who wish to access learning locally, as a step to more active community involvement.

Examples of programmes that have been funded through community education are: Community Gardening, Personal Development, Art & Craft, Community Website Design, Cook It, Social Networking, Flower Arranging, Conversational English/Irish, Drama, DIY, Parenting programmes and many more.

FETAC Levels

What is FETAC?

The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) was the statutory awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. From June 2001 until the establishment of Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) on 6 November 2012, FETAC made awards at levels 1 to 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). Awarding body for FETAC is QQI.

The National Framework of Qualifications is a system of ten levels, each of which has nationally agreed standards setting out what you are expected to know, understand and be able to do following successful completion of a programme.

A major award (often called ‘the full certificate’) typically gives eligibility for progression to learning opportunities at the next level on the Framework.

Each award, regardless of type, has a specific credit value

which must be achieved. Credits tell you about the volume

of learning involved. One credit reflects up to ten hours

of learning effort. Credit values help you plan and manage

your learning.

Almost all major awards are made up of one or more mi-nor (component) awards. Minor awards recognise achieve-ment of small building blocks of learning. They are known-as components because they are part of a broader set of requirements for a major or other award.

What is Pre-Course Placement?

Learners applying for courses featured in this booklet will be given an appointment by Career Guidance to attend a pre course placement session. These are usually conducted in group sessions however individual appointments can be made. This session usually consists of a written task and sometimes a numerical and/or a computer task.

The purpose of this is to ensure learners are placed on courses at a FETAC level that will allow them to succeed.

Following the pre course placement learners who have applied for a FETAC level 3, 4 or 5 course may find themselves being offered an alternative level course. This may happen because the original level course is not suitable for them at this time. The alternative level course will be offered so that the learner can gain the skills required to participate and progress in the at the next opportunity.

Prospective learners have the opportunity to discuss this with an Adult Education Guidance Officer at any of the Open Days (see back page).

General Learning

PlanIT An Introductory Programme This is a short non accredited part-time course which prepares learners for returning to learning. Running three days per week over a 4 week period, this course allows learners step back into education with no exam pressures. PlanIT is designed to be fun yet challenging. It will allow you to gain confidence, make friends and introduce you to the many courses that are available through LMETB. Each class and each day is varied with a taste of Photography, Cookery, Woodwork, Computers and Social Media among the many topics you will touch on. A VTOS Programme (Full time)

This full time accredited programme provides a full Level 4 award and preparation for progression to the Leaving Certificate or Cloud Computing programme. This course will allow you to study a wide range of subjects including Communications, Maths, Spanish, Biology, History, IT, Occupational First Aid, Work Experience, Personal Interpersonal Skills and much more. Leaving Certificate A VTOS Programme (Full time)

Students participate in a full Leaving Certificate (6 subjects) & Critical Writing skills classes delivered by an NUIM lecturer. This is an ideal progression route into third level education or employment. Students have a range of subjects to choose from including Maths, English, Business, Biology, Geography, History and Physics. Students also benefit from guidance, mentoring and CAO workshops throughout the course. Course runs from September —June, 5 days per week. Navan only—Enrolment on-going

UNISTART A VTOS Programme (Full time) Unistart is a full time college access course which offers learners real potential for progression to college and third level education. Students will be taught to develop critical writing skills, time management, teamwork and research and study skills. They will have access to exten-sive guidance in course selection, and CAO application. Also included are IT and learning platforms skills, college open day visits, mock interviews and direct contact with Access Officers from a range of Universities and Colleges. This Programme has enjoyed great success with most participants receiving one or more college place offers. Course runs from September —June, 5 days per week.

VTOS is a Navan based full time programme which provides

a FREE educational opportunity to students who are over 21 years of age and who have been in receipt of a social welfare payment or signing for credits for more than 6 months.

Have you always wanted to see if you could paint or draw? Perhaps you can do a bit of both but would like some instruction? Would you also like to learn some computer skills? Well now is your chance—learn how to:.

This non accredited short beginner course will help you learn how to cook delicious healthy food on a budget.

You will learn how to:

Stop wasting valuable food by learning the best way to buy and store food.

Use only 5 ingredients that will make it super simple to shop for and cook.

Use everyday maths to help you plan and budget your money.

It will run 1 day per week (4 hours per day) for 6 weeks.

Nutrition and Healthy Options

This accredited course will help you to prepare healthy food safely and cater for special diets.

You will learn:

How to store, prepare and cook food safely

Create a balanced diet including special diets

It will run 1 day per week (3 hours per day) for 12 weeks You can gain a FETAC Level 3 certificate and can choose to go on to complete a full Major Award at FETAC level 3 as a follow on option.

Quick and Easy Quilting This is a short non accredited course with everyday maths. This course will run 1 day per week (4 hours per day) for 6 weeks . Basic sewing skills required.

FETAC Level 4 Major Award in Horticulture

Ideal course for an adult who left school without completing the Leaving Certificate, who is interested in gardening, unemployed and/or looking for a new direction.

This practical 1 year course includes the following modules:

Plant Identification Care and Maintenance

Safe Horticultural Practice

Horticultural Science

Growing Fruit

Growing Vegetables

Establishing Trees and Shrubs

Woodcraft

Communications

Work Experience Two days a week, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. Days to be confirmed.

Gardening for Beginners

This accredited course is open to anyone who left school early without completing their exams.

You will learn about:

Common trees and shrubs

How to use a range of common gardening tools and equipment.

Plant a vegetable or flower bed, or container and learn how to help plants grow and flourish.

This course will run 1 Morning per week (3 hours per day) for 10 weeks.

You can gain a FETAC Minor Award (Level 1 or 2). Courses are available in Navan only.

Handy Skills FETAC Level 3 Accredited Course

This course includes gardening, woodwork and metal work as well as computers, maths, personal effectiveness and career preparation. Runs 2 days a week, (10 hours) for 9 months. Days to be confirmed. Leads to a FETAC level 3 Major Award in Employability Skills Available Navan, Athboy and Trim
