The reasons for the designation are as follows: The heritage value of the Reader Rock Garden lies chiefly in its representation of various principles of gardening popular in the early twentieth century and their application to Alberta's environment. It is also significant for its personal association with William Roland Reader, an internationally regarded horticulturalist, who served as Superintendent of Calgary's Parks Department from 1913 to 1942, and supervised the Rock Garden's foundation and development.

The Reader Rock Garden represents the ideals of various principles of gardening - both public and private - in practice in the early part of the twentieth century, particularly the naturalistic landscape popularized the 1920s. Originally established soon after the beginning of William Reader's term as Calgary's Park's Superintendent in 1913, the Rock Garden was his personal masterpiece, and was inspired by his interpretation of the City Beautiful movement. In addition to these design elements, the Reader Rock Garden also served as a test site for Reader's botanical experiments in testing Alberta's soils and reception of three to four thousand plant varieties. In terms of its botanical diversity, the Reader Rock Garden is a unique

example of its kind in Alberta. The rock garden continues to yield significant horticultural information.

William Roland Reader's horticultural knowledge garnered for him an international reputation, and served him well as Superintendent of Calgary's Parks Department during his twenty-nine year tenure. Self-educated in Britain, Reader brought to Alberta his broad botanical knowledge to the Foothills region. He largely succeeded in his strategic goal of transforming the boomtown city into a destination for the west, through his aesthetic vision for the public life of Calgarians. The development of high quality open space, including public parks, was one of Reader's major priorities. The Rock Garden that he designed and constructed around his home served to educate Calgarians about gardening potential and the civic beautification of landscapes.

It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest.

and municipally located near Claresholm, in the Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26, Alberta be designated as a PROVINCIAL HISTORIC RESOURCE under Section 20 of the HISTORICAL RESOURCES ACT, R.S.A. 2000 C. H-9.

The reasons for the designation are as follows:

The heritage value of the Leavings at Willow Creek lies in its representation of early ranching activity in southern Alberta. In addition, the Leavings is significant for its association with the Fort Macleod-Calgary Trail, the major north-south thoroughfare prior to the Calgary and Edmonton (C & E) Railway in 1892, and with the establishment of law and order in the region through the North West Mounted Police (NWMP). The site thus provides rare structural evidence of initiatives by the Canadian government to secure the West from American encroachment after Confederation: the granting of large-scale ranch leases to British-Canadian investors, and the creation of a federal police force.

The term "Leavings" indicated a place where a trail "left" a water supply, where travellers could obtain supplies of water and wood. After Fort Calgary was established in 1875 there were regular supply ("bull") trains and stagecoaches from Fort Benton in Montana to Fort Macleod and on to Calgary. The Leavings was one of four spots along the route chosen as a camping ground and, by the mid-1870s a stopping house, operated by a former buffalo hunter and whiskey trader, Henry Kountz.

In 1882, the New Oxley Ranch secured a lease for 200,000 acres from the Dominion Government, making it one of the four largest ranches in the foothills region. The ranch's first manager, J.R. Craig, purchased the stopping house and constructed the barn. The Leavings continued to serve as a stopping point for travellers, and it became a post office and centre for social activities even after the ranch headquarters was relocated north along the river in 1884.

From 1886 until 1903 the NWMP took advantage of the important location of the Leavings by manning an outpost from the site, sending patrols north and west through the Porcupine Hills. After the completion of the C & E Railway, however, traffic on the trail declined and the garrison moved to Claresholm. The grazing lease expired in 1906, at which point the Leavings became part of a homestead.

The house and stable at the Leavings at Willow Creek are among the oldest structures extant in southern Alberta, and rare surviving evidence of an NWMP outpost.

Canadian Northern Railway Station, together with the land legally described as:

PLAN 5614 AF, BLOCK A

and municipally located at Railway Avenue in Meeting Creek, Alberta be designated as a PROVINCIAL HISTORIC RESOURCE under Section 20 of the HISTORICAL RESOURCES ACT, R.S.A. 2000 C. H-9.

The reasons for the designation are as follows: The heritage value of the Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR) Station lies in its representation of typical, small-town Alberta railway station architecture from the early twentieth century. The station also possesses significant symbolic value as an emblem of the central role of railways in opening the province to settlement and agriculture.

In 1909, the Premier of Alberta, Alexander Rutherford, offered major railway companies bond guarantees to expand the province's transportation network in order to further settlement and development. The CNoR responded enthusiastically to the Premier's call, laying down new track throughout Alberta. In 1911, this company built a line between Camrose and Stettler. The Meeting Creek settlement was initially located five miles east of the new track and depot; it was relocated in order to be included in the new townsite. Though Meeting Creek's proximity to larger regional settlements at Camrose, Donalda, and Bashaw prevented it from becoming an agricultural and commercial centre, its connection to the railway nonetheless enabled it to develop into a robust farming community, boasting three grain elevators and all the requisite settlement services. With the amalgamation of the CNoR into Canadian National Railways (CNR) in the late 1910s, many smaller branch lines closed, though the Meeting Creek station continued to operate until the 1960s, when improved highway infrastructure and services rendered the depot obsolete.

The CNoR Station erected at Meeting Creek in 1913 was constructed according to Plan 100-29, the most common design for CNoR Third Class depots built between 1907 and 1914. More than 300 of these stations were constructed throughout Canada and in Minnesota; 36 are recorded to have been built in Alberta, and only 4 have been confirmed extant in 2006. Designed by the influential architect, Ralph Benjamin Pratt, this plan was distinguished by its high hipped roof with gabled dormers - an architectural element that Pratt effectively developed into an instantly recognizable trademark of CNoR stations. The interior featured an office, waiting room, freight shed, and residence for the station agent. The CNoR Station at Meeting Creek was extensively restored in 1988 to reflect the appearance of the station between 1940 and 1950.

It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest.
