From the Deputy’s Desk Mr James Webb

Term 3 has seen a number of significant events happen in the College. The annual Grandparent’s

Day with lots of smiling faces and very proud grandchildren always brings the College to life.

Seeing the Grandparents work with their Grandchildren across all classes in the Junior School,

reading with them, building things and imparting knowledge – both ways, demonstrates that we

are truly a learning community.

In the Senior School our Year 12 students have spent the past 2 weeks on Trial HSC Exams. A

tense time all round but one which ensures the best preparation for the HSC to come. The

Continuers French students have also commenced their HSC proper with their Orals taking place

last Saturday.

Added to this Showcase Events for Art, Wood Technology, Textiles, Drama and Music give the

students more opportunities to exhibit their works and to perform in front of a live audience.

The Annual Equestrian Carnival was held this past weekend and a huge vote of thanks to all of

the parents, staff and students who assisted on the day. These events do not organise

themselves and I would like to pass on the College’s sincere thanks to Miss Kristen Bailey (Maths

Department) for the oversight and organisation of the day. Miss Bailey was supported by

Mrs Jodie Woods – the College’s Business Manager. Their organisation and tireless efforts are

gratefully acknowledged. Testament to this was the success of the day. Well done to all.

So you can see that as a school we are blessed by the enthusiasm of our students, parent body

(including grandparents), staff and friends. Truly a vibrant and engaged community.

Buses: We are governed by buses and need, in the afternoon, to move some 700 students out

of the College in about 25 minutes. Please continue to assist us in ensuring that buses have

access to the front of the College.

Uniform: On the whole our uniform is looking ok. However in the High School we can do better.

The length of the girls’ skirts must be at knee length and not thigh. Hair must be such that it does

not draw undue attention to the owner either boys or girls. Tracksuit tops do not replace jumpers

or blazers. As a parent you have signed up to support the Uniform Code of the College. Please

be aware of phone calls or emails home on the above matters.

Chaplaincy Chat

Rev Jeremy Clark Philippians 2:5 Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus.

We live in ‘the selfie world’. Even Senior School chapel has the speaker taking selfies, and during the chapel! Our world

focuses more and more on the self, it’s all about ‘i', the iPhone, iPad, iMac, iWatch, I even own an iBook. Everyone else

is trying to make their device like the ‘i' phenomena, or better. Then we seek our gratification in the posting of the

evidence, hoping we’ll get more ‘likes’ than the last time, checking out to see who likes me this time. So many of us just

want to be liked, to be the centre of attention.

God has a radically different view of the purpose for humanity. Jesus exemplifies

God’s plan. Here is how Paul talks about Jesus in Philippians 2:6-11: who,

existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to

be used for His own advantage. Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the

form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man

in His external form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of

death—even to death on a cross.

For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above

every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— of those who are

in heaven and on earth and under the earth— and every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

In verse 5 God calls us to have the same attitude as Christ, to put others before ourselves as God intends. This is very

different to the ‘i' world, where we try and make ourselves ‘Lord’. Jesus lowers himself so that we might have a

relationship with God, with Jesus as our Lord. Our College desires that its students would learn to put others before

themselves. More than this we pray they will experience the ultimately fulfilling life where Jesus is Lord.

If you wish to chat about the Christian faith or ask general questions about chaplaincy, please contact the Chaplaincy

Team at the College.

HICES Debating Mr Tom Lavelle

At recent debating finals, it was a gallant performance from the Year 7 Red team in their first ever impromptu debate

and Elimination Final. Arguing the affirmative “That our National identity is a myth”, they were eventually defeated by a

most impressive Emanuel College team who focussed in on the key ideas particularly well.

The team of Evie Claxton (1st), Ben Webb (2nd), Lachlan Watts (3rd), Caleb Clarke (4th) and Will McGregor

(Chair/timekeeper) did a terrific job in reaching the HICES finals in their first year in the Middle division. This is a

significant achievement in itself.

Congratulations also to the Open and Senior Red debating teams in progressing to the final eight in respective

competitions. The Open team of Bethany McNamara (1st), Lleyton Bird (2nd), Emily May (3rd) and Rosie Rodgers (4th)

defeated last year’s HICES runners up Moriah College in a knife-edge decision, on the negative of the topic “That global

warming demands global actions”.

The Senior Red team of Jeremy Liu (1st), David Lavelle (2nd), Jessica Steenbeeke (3rd) and Laura Holman (4th) achieved

a win over Chevalier College. This is the first time a Senior team has reached the quarter-finals. The Senior Red team

successfully argued the affirmative “That high speed police chases should be banned.” Both teams now enjoy another

knockout final in the next two weeks.

Congratulations to Emily May (Open division) and David Lavelle (Senior division) who also won their respective regional

totals for Outer Western Sydney. Jeremy Liu (3rd Seniors), Jake James (5th Seniors) and Evie Claxton (5th –Middle) also

attained awards from the preliminary rounds.

Unischools Steer Live Day Mrs Nicole Evans

Students had a great time at their first cattle show. All entries placed well in the cattle parading competition, some

having to compete against experienced handlers. Our steer received a 6th place in best presented and a 7th place

in live steer. We had various students judging cattle with some having to make a speech about them to justify their

order of placement. We have not found out all the results yet as there is a closing ceremony on the 9th September.

All the results for our team will be announced after that.

Year 3 – The Rocks Excursion

On Wednesday the 10th August, Year Three went on an excursion to The

Rocks in Sydney. It was a fantastic day, with gorgeous weather. Mr Conway

acted like our tour guide, as he walked us through the streets of The Rocks.

Whilst we ate our lunch under the Harbour Bridge, we had the most amazing

view of the Sydney Harbour. We even got to witness a movie being filmed at

the Opera House. After lunch, we made our way down to the meeting place

for our Walking Tour. We met our guides and then it all began.

Here are some things the students said about our excursion:

Facts we learnt on our Excursion:

- James Bloodworth built the governor’s house. – Liam Rogers

- They used sea shells and sand for cement. - Caleb Hayden

- Many convicts married officers. – Angelina Thompson

- We learnt about the ferries. They were named after the First Fleet. – Joel Bishop

- James Ruse was the first famer and only person in NSW who could feed his

family on his own. – Oliver Isemonger

- If you got married to a guard or officer, you became a free lady. – Joel

Vacopoulos

- Mary Reibey stole a horse whilst dressed as a boy, and that is how she became

a convict. – Sophie Stewart

On the excursion to The Rocks, we

got to dress up as Captain Arthur

Phillip, soldiers and convicts. I

dressed up as a convict called,

Rachel Turner. We travelled around

The Rocks looking at places convicts

had been to or built. We had lots of

Fun!

Giaan Perry

On our excursion, we went to the rocks

to learn about convicts and their time

in Australia. We learnt that rocks from

Scotland were used for building things

like the floor. We dressed up as

convicts and learnt their stories.

Obadiah Clarke

I liked dressing up. I was Thomas

Hill. I got sent to America for

stealing a silver watch. Then I got

sent to The Rocks, Australia, for

stealing a convict’s biscuit.

Jack Woods

I learnt that The Rocks was very

old. I liked dressing up as

convicts. I learnt The Rocks was

built by convicts and it was first

called Tallawoladah. I dressed up

as Mary Reibey and married

Riley who was Thomas Reibey.

Mary Reiby is on the twenty dollar

note.
