TheYETCservesasaK-12curriculumlibrary.WehaveafairlylargecollectionofcurriculummaterialsthatarecatalogedandmadeavailableforCollegeofEducationfaculty,staff,andstudentstocheckout.Thecurriculummaterialscheckoutforamonth.PatronsmusthaveavalidUSUcardtocheckthesematerialsout.

TheYETCalsoservesstudentsasoneofUtahStateUniversity'sopenaccesscomputerlabs.Studentsusethelabtocompleteassignments,doresearch,createportfolios,andexploreandlearntechnologiesrelatedtotheiracademicfields.Wehave76computers,bothWindowsPCsandMacintoshes,thatstudentsmayuse.Again,apatron’sUSUactivitycardisrequiredtocomeinandusetheequipment.

TheYETCservesasatechnologylearningandtrainingcenter.Weendeavortohelpstudentsbecomeknowledgeableandproficientusingcurrenttechnologiesthatareusedintheeducationprofession.Besidesone-to-oneassistancestudentsandfacultycanreceivefromYETCemployees,trainingsessionsandworkshopsareoftenprovidedatnocosttothem.Additionally,manytraininghelpsandmaterialsareprovidedonourwebsite,TeacherLINK.

Theonlyexceptiontothiswouldbeifyou’vebeenassignedaspecialresponsibilitytocompletefortheYETCorifsomeoftheseactivitiesarepartofaUSUassignmentthatyou’vebeenassigned.Anexceptionwillbemadeforyouifyouinformtheshiftmanagerwhyyouneedtodooneoftheseactivities,andyou’vecompletedtheotherprioritiesmentionedearlier.

Innocaseshouldyoueverwearheadphonesorearbudswhileonthejob,whichlimitsyourabilitytolistentowhat’sgoingoninthecenter.

FoodandDrink:PleaseeatanyfoodoutsidetheYETC.Therearetablesintheatriumandnearthevendingarea.Eatanddrinkthere.

Vegetating:Pleasedon’tjustsitanddonothingwhileontheshift.Thedictionarydefinesvegetateasthis:toleadapassiveexistencewithoutexertionofbodyormind.Iwouldalsoaddthatjustsittingforlongperiodsatthefrontdeskinidleconversationisalsoaformofvegetating.IntheYETC,therearealwaysthingstodoandlearn.Ifyoudon’thaveanyideasaboutwhattodo,asktheDirectororAssistantManagers.

Employeeswillreceiveawarningwhenparticipatinginactivitiesnotallowedonthejob.Threeormorewarningswillconstitutegroundsfordismissalfromthejob.

SpecificJobDutiesforYETCemployees:TheYETCDirector,NathanSmith,isresponsibleforthecareandmanagementoftheYETC.Allaspectsofthedirection,administration,andcareforthecenterfallsonhisshoulders.

Fromtimetotime,theYETCDirectorhiresAssistantManagerstoassisthimwithhisrole.AssistantManagershavethefollowingdutiesandresponsibilities:

CARRYOUTTHEMISSIONOFTHEYETC:

1. AssisttheDirectorinkeepingcurrentontheissues,theories,materials,andtechnologybeingusedineducation.

2. AssisttheDirectortoacquire,maintain,circulate,promote,andtrainpeopleintheuseofmaterialsandequipmentthatwillenhanceteachingandteachereducation.

3. IdentifyandlocateresourcesappropriateforinclusionintheYETCcollection.4. ParticipateinthedevelopmentoffundingproposalsrelatedtotheYETC.

PROVIDESUPPORTSERVICESTOCOLLEGEOFEDUCATION:

5. Provideandfacilitatetrainingforstudents,faculty,andlocalareaeducatorstomakethemmoreeffectiveusersoftheYETC'sservicesandcollections.

6. Providecirculationandotherpatronservices.7. AssisttheDirectorintheoperationandmaintenanceoftheCollegeofEducationcomputer

networks.8. Assistthefacultyinsettingupandoperatingtechnologyrelatedclassroomequipment.9. IncooperationwithClassroomTechnicalServices,provideteachingstationmanagement

andsupportwhencalledupon.

SUPERVISEDAY-TO-DAYOPERATIONSOFTHEYETC:

10. AssisttheDirectorininterviewingandselectingpotentialYETCemployees.11. SuperviseYETCpersonnel(scheduling,training,deployment,etc.).12. AssisttheDirectorindeterminingYETCpoliciesandprocedures.13. Providetechnicalsupportforcataloging,managing,securing,andmonitoringtheYETC

collection.14. Supervisetheinstallation,preventivemaintenanceandinventoryofequipmentassignedto

theYETC.15. Officiateoverperiodicstaffmeetingstosolveproblems,determineneeds,andplanfuture

directions.16. RegularlymeetwiththeDirectortoreportprogress,solveproblems,determineneeds,and

planfuturedirections.

BesidestheAssistantManagers,theDirectorhiresYETCstaff.Theseareparttimestudentemployeeswhosedutiesareasfollows:

FrontDeskEmployee:

1. WorkatornearthefrontdeskoftheYETCwhileonshift.That’syourarea!2. GreetallpatronsastheyentertheYETC.Acknowledgeeachpersonastheyenter,evenif

youarebusywithanotherpatron.WewanteverypersonwhoenterstheYETCwelcomed.3. AnswertheYETC’sphone;takemessagesandanswerquestions.4. Checkmaterialsinandouttoourpatrons.Shelvereturnedmaterialswheretheyare

supposedtogo.Donotletmaterialspileupatthefrontdesk,wherepeopledonothaveaccesstothem.

5. KeepthefrontoftheYETCneatandinvitingforourpatrons.Keepthefrontdeskareasstraightenedandneat.Makesurepapertraysarefilled,staplesandtapearesupplied,andthepaperholepunchemptiedfromtimetotime.

6. Dospecialassignments.Youcanuseoneofthelabstationsnearthefrontdesk(usuallystation1,4,or5).Thefrontdeskcomputer(s)arenottobeusedforrecreationalbrowsing,homeworkassignments,etc.TheyaretoonlybeusedforYETCpurposes.

7. Takecareoftransactions,suchassubtractingprintsfrompatron'scards,cashtransactions,etc.

8. Maintainthefrontdeskareaandtheemployeeroomjustbehind(wecallitthecage).Theyneedtobeclean,neat,andorganizedatalltimes.

9. KeeptheYETCsecurefromtheft,misuse,orabuse.

LabEmployee:

1. WorkintheYETCawayfromthefrontdeskareawhileonshift.That’syourareaofresponsibility.

2. Answerpatronquestions.3. Offerresourceortechnicalassistancesuggestionstopatronsastheyworkontheir

assignments.Ourmissionasaresourcecenteristohelpourstudentslearnofanduseresourcesthatwillbevaluabletothemintheircareers.Wewantthemtolearnnewandexcitingresourcesandtechnologiesthattheyaren’tawareof.

4. MaintaintheYETCawayfromthefrontdeskarea.Shelvereturnedmaterials.Makesurethecollectionsareinorderontheshelvesandinthecabinets.Keeptheareaneat,clean,andpleasanttouse.

5. Checkequipmentthatitisclean,neat,andworkingwell.6. Dospecialassignments.Ifnecessary,youcanuseoneofthelabstationswhereyoucan

viewandsupervisethebackareasoftheYETC.7. Assistthefrontdeskemployeewhenneeded.Answerthephoneifthefrontdeskemployee

isbusyhelpingapatron.8. KeeptheYETCsecurefromtheft,misuse,orabuse.9. Beinchargeof,andmanagetheYETCintheabsenceoftheDirectorandAssistant

Managers.

Otheremployeeresponsibilities:

1. Alwaysbekindandcourteous–especiallyifthepatronisnotactingthatway.2. AttendYETCstaffmeetingsonoccasionasneeded.3. AttendYETCtrainingsessionsforemployeesasneeded.

Howareworkschedulesandtimecardshandled?Schedulingusuallytakesplacenearthebeginningofeachsemester.You'llberequiredtofilloutanemployeeinformationform,whichincludesaddressandphoneinformation,andthehoursyou'llbeavailabletowork.Fromthese,theDirectordraftsatentativeschedule.Duringastaffmeetingorcollaborativelyonline,allemployeesworktorefinethatschedulesoitmeetseveryone'sneeds.Employeesituationsmaychangeduringthesemester,whichwillnecessitatefurtheradjustmentstotheschedule.

TimeCards:USUrequiresthatstudentemployeeskeepaccuratetimecards.Graduatestudentsaresometimesplacedoncontract,butareaskedtokeepatimecardaswell.TheUSUworkweekbeginsonSaturdayandendsonthefollowingFriday.TheYETCusesacomputerbasedtimecard.Youwillbetrainedhowtofilloutyourtimeinhttp://aggietime.usu.edu.

AstheDirectorapprovesthesemi-monthlypayroll,yourweeklyhourtotalsareroundedtothenearestfifteenminuteinterval.Forexample18hoursand14minutesbecomes18.25hoursonthetimesheet.18hoursand6minutesbecomes18.00hours.Ifyoueverhavequestionsaboutyourtimecards,pleaseasktheDirector.Keepinginaccurateordishonesttimecardswillbecausefordismissalandcouldresultincriminalprosecution,suspensionfromtheuniversity,etc.

Isitimportanttobeontime?BeingontimeisabsolutelycriticalwhenworkingattheYETC.Ouremployeesdependonyoutoarriveontimesotheycangettoclassesorothercommitments.PatronsdependontheYETCbeingopenbythepostedtime.Ifatallpossible,pleasearrivefiveminutesearlytoyourshift.IfyouareopeningtheYETCfortheday,youneedtoshowupabout15minutesearly.

Itisalsoimportantthatyouleaveontime.Leavingyourshiftearlycancausestrainedemployeerelations(becausethepersonleftendsupworkingadoubleload).Leavingyourshiftlatestrainsthebudget.

WhatifanemergencyoccurswhereI’mnotabletowork?Sometimeslifemesseswithourschedules.Youmaygetsick,haveafamilyemergency,etc.,thatwillmakeyouunabletoworkyourshift.Weaskthatyoublog,calloremailotheremployeesandhaveoneormoreofthemcoveryourhours.

Bytheway,ifyouareaskedtosubstituteforanotheremployee,pleasenoteitonyourtimecard.Forexample,ifyouareworkingJohn'shourstoday,youwouldnoteitbyputting"forJohn"intheNOTESfieldonyourtimecard.BesuretoaddthenoteonthesamelinethatyouloggedinandoutwhenworkingJohn'shours.

AllworkschedulechangesmustbeclearedwiththeDirector,orAssistantManageronyourshift.Youcannotifyhimbytext,phoneoremail.

Ifyoucan'tfindasubstitute,theDirectororAssistantManagermaybeabletocoveryourshiftforyou.Notshowingupforyourshiftwithoutpriornotificationcanbeacauseforjobdismissal,soifyouhaveanemergency,besuretonotifytheDirector(orotherYETCpersonnel)andinformthemofthesituationasfaraheadoftimeasyoucan.Excessiveabsences,tardiness,orfailuretoattendstaffmeetingswillresultinawarning.Continuedabsences,tardiness,orfailuretoattendstaffmeetingsmaybecausefordismissal.

WhencanItakeabreak?Ifyouworkacontinuousshiftoffourhoursorlonger,youareentitledtoa15-minutebreaksometimeduringthattime.Ifyouworklessthana4-hourshift,abreakisnotprovided.Ifpossible,pleasechooseaslacktimefortakingabreak.Alwayslettheothershiftemployeesknowwhereyouaregoingbeforeleavingforabreakorrestroomvisit.

WhatshouldIwearwhileonthejob?UniformsarenotwornwhileworkingintheYETC.Sinceappearancedoesmakeanimpressiononpatrons,weaskthatyoubeclean,neat,andmodestinappearancewhileworkinghere.CampusdressstandardsapplyinallUtahStateUniversitysettings.

Additionally,pleaseavoidoffensivebodyodorsbybathing,usingadeodorant,brushingyourteeth,beforeyoucometowork.Youknow,allthosethingsyourmomtaughtyoutodowhenyouwereakid.Weareaserviceoperation–wedon’twanttooffendourpatronsoreachother.

Clothingthatisraggedortorn(yes,eventhosedesignerjeansthatcomeswiththeholespre-made)shouldnotbeworntowork.Clothingthathasalogoorsloganthatmightbeconsideredoffensiveshouldnotbeworn.

Serviceguidelinesandpolicies…TheYETCexiststoprovideservicetoourpatronsrelatingtothefunctionsandcollectionsofthecenter.Thesuccess,orfailure,ofouroperationdependsuponthequalityofserviceweprovide.Thefollowingareguidelinesfordealingwithourpatrons...

CheerfullygreeteverypersonthatenterstheYETC:WhenapatronenterstheYETC,promptlygreethimwithacheerful"Hello.WhatmayIdotohelpyou?"Ifyouhappentobebusywithanotherpersonatthetime,besuretoacknowledgethemwithsomethinglike,"Hi!I'llbewithyouinjustamoment."Alwaysacknowledgetheirpresencepromptly.Nobodylikesfeelingignored.I’veoftenleftanestablishmentafterwaitingseveralminutesatthedeskreceptionist’sdeskandnotreceivinganyacknowledgement.IfeltlikeIwasbeingignored.It’srude!Let’sneverletthathappentoanyofourpatrons.

WhocanIallowtousetheYETC?AnyUSUemployeeorstudentwhocanshowyouavalidUSUactivitycard.AnyteacherorhomeschoolparentmayusethecentertoobtainNASAeducationalmaterials.TeachersfromlocalschooldistrictsarewelcometobrowsethematerialsintheYETC,butmaynotcheckthemoutwithoutavalidUSUcard.

ArechildrenallowedintheYETC?SmallinfantsandyoungchildrenmayaccompanytheirparentsintotheYETC,providedtheyarecloselyattendedatalltimes.Whenparentsleave,thechildrenmustleavewiththem.Wedonotprovidebabysittingservices.Ifchildrenbecomedisruptive,pleasesuggestthattheparenttakethemoutoftheYETCsoothersmayconcentrateontheirwork.Iftheydonot,andthechildisstilldisruptive,insistthatthechildbetakenoutofthecenteruntilquieted.
