What is the EXPLORE?

EXPLORE -8th and 9th grade (score range 1 to 25)

PLAN - 10th grade (score range 1 to 32)

The Explore Test

Four multiple-choice tests:

English 40 30 minutes

Math 30 30 minutes

Reading 30 30 minutes

Science 28 30 minutes

The English Test

Usage/Mechanics - Punctuation, grammar and usage, and sentence structure (25 questions)

Rhetorical Skills - Use of strategy, organization, and style in writing (15 questions)

Scores:Total Score – English TestSubscores - Usage/Mechanics and Rhetorical Skills.

The Math Test

Mathematical Reasoning - Focuses on your ability to reason in math rather than on how well you have memorized formulas or can do involved computations

Pre Algebra/Algebra – 19 questions

Geometry – 7 questions

Statistics/Probability - 4 questions

Can you use a calculator?

Yes! You may use any four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator approved by your instructor

The Reading Test

Measures ability to understand written material – from different school subjects (30 questions)

Skills measured- referring to details in the passage, drawing conclusions, and making comparisons and generalizations

Similar to materials you might read in school, including:

Fiction - Short stories or excerpts from short stories or novels

Humanities -Excerpts from memoirs or personal essays, from works on architecture, art, dance, ethics, film, language, literary criticism, music, philosophy, radio, religion, television, and theater

Social Sciences- Excerpts from works on anthropology, archaeology, biography, business, economics, education, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology

The Science Test

Measures scientific reasoning skills-the ability to understand scientific information & draw conclusions from it (28 questions)

•Data Representation-(graphs, tables, and other forms)•Research Summaries -(descriptions of several related experiments) •Conflicting Viewpoints -(two or more hypotheses that are inconsistent with one another).

Topics covered - Life Sciences, Earth/Space Sciences (e.g., geology, astronomy, and meteorology), and Physical Sciences.

Career Interest Inventory

72 questions - to help determine your career interests

Questions about your likes and dislikes and how they relate to different careers

There are no right or wrong answers- everybody will be different

Follow directions exactly, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Mark your answer folder carefully. Fill in the ovals

neatly.

Don't spend too much time on any single question. For hard ones, choose the answer you think is best & move on.

Just like the ACT, there is no penalty for guessing. Be sure to answer every question.
