Due to the aftermath of the Manchester Arena bombing just 2 days before, some of the members were unfortunately unable to attend to collect their awards and a one minute silence was held prior to lunch to remember the victims of the terror attack.

This annual lunch, run by FM Contract Watch, is a recognised event in the security guarding calendar. Each member company attending was presented with a 2017 ACS Pacesetters Award to recognise the fact that they have achieved an SIA ACS score in the top 15% of all

accredited companies. However, the highlight of the day was the Security Officer of Distinction Awards which were presented to Security Officers who had excelled in their duties and, at times, risked their own safety to save others. The standard of nomination this year was exceptional and it was a very difficult task to reach the final winners. The Security Officers had gone above and beyond what was expected, saving lives, helping in the conviction of criminals and being injured themselves in the line of duty. All the winners were of great credit to their company and the client that they are contracted to. It was an honour to be able to recognise their heroic actions.

The guest speaker, Chas Staines, Director of Continuancy Limited gave an interesting insight into the challenges of security as the Global Risk and Security Manager of an international high value jewellery company. Chas also presented the individual awards to the Security Officers.

The ACS Pacesetters was first established in September 2010 and it is now a recognised quality benchmark for companies in the security guarding industry to aspire to join, and for organisations to set as a standard when going out to tender for their security contract.

The membership of The ACS Pacesetters continues to increase year on year and although we may lose a few members due to failing to meet the criteria, business takeovers or closures, many have been with us since day one which shows the importance that companies put on their continued association with this quality standard.

It is obvious to those with a good knowledge of the security guarding industry that there is a vast difference between a contractor who has a score of +1 and one who has a score of +128 or higher. However, all the ACS companies listed on the SIA website, which totalled 831 at the 31st March 2017, are shown to have achieved the same accreditation.

The ACS Pacesetters is the differentiator in the industry which promotes the elite companies who are the market leaders and provide a quality service to their clients, and demonstrate a high degree of care for their employees.

Below are some statistics relating to the current ACS companies and SIA licencing.

The 831 companies accredited to the Security Industry Authority Approved Contractor Scheme are represented by the following size of organisation:

Micro 1 – 10 Employees 221 27%

Small 11 – 25 Employees 194 23%

Medium 236 – 250 Employees 350 42%

Large 251+ Employees 66 8%

In March 2017, there were 317,416 individuals holding a current SIA licence, however, some held more than one resulting in a total of 362,176 valid licences being held. In January 2017, there was a breakdown of licences held by gender and at that time 9% were held by females. Therefore, assuming there was no vast change during the 2 month period this shows that a total of 32,956 SIA licences were issued to females working in the industry.

It is also interesting to find that 59% of all licences held were for the Door Supervisor Sector and 22.3% for Security Guarding, however, this is no doubt due to the fact that a Door Supervisor can work as a Security Officer, but not the other way around.

The percentage of licences issued to other sectors are Key Holding 0.2%, Close Protection 4.2%, Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) 12.4%, Cash and Valuables in Transit 1.8% and vehicle immobilisers 0.01%.
