“StrongTradition.ProvenSuccess.PowerfulFuture.”

These words constitute the theme for Albany Tech’s ongoing 50th Anniversary celebration. In my opinion, it’s an amazing accomplishment to do anything for fifty years. Just consider how our world has changed from 1961 and how these changes are implemented through the programs we offer at Albany Tech. In 1961, there were no microwaves or cell phones; no fax machines, cruise control, nor home computers or hand-held music players. Now we have wireless access across campus, programs in technology, visual communications and online education – just to mention a few.

Albany Tech has grown and adapted through the years to remain on the cutting edge of technology, systems, and processes. It’s an exciting time to be on the campus as we celebrate this anniversary. We continue to grow and adapt to meet the needs of our community.

As you celebrate the “Golden Anniversary” at Albany Tech, consider your education to be like nuggets of gold – a priceless treasure that can never be taken away.

Enjoy Spring Quarter!

LEADERS DO ITBy Dr. Majied

March 8, 2011

Leaders turn on light bulbs in a learner’s head. They provide a chair to sit and listen,

As another human being tells of joys and dreads.

She helps a student put “ducks in a row.”He reminds a worker of the places you can go.”

The leader is a shining sunThat guides others to easy ways to get the job done.

He sets a goal and targets clear, andSays to the student, “Yes, you can; come up here!”

The leader is a branching tree,That knows he’s connected to you and me.

She knows that questions can lead to light,Knowledge, self-esteem, and fight.

He makes decisions, bit by bit,Studies, works, reads, writes, figures, and won’t quit.

So that others will know, lead, and goOn through life—

Deeds speak as the leader works hard to grow golden, show, and know.

Reading Riddle: Unusual ParagraphQuestion:

This is an unusual paragraph. I’m curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it! In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out! Try to do so without any coaching!*answer found at the bottom of the page

*Please note that the crossword puzzle contains abbreviations and spaces.

Why Do We Need to Study Mathematics?“Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics.” This is a quote by Dean Schlicter. Although he was not a mathematician or scientist, he made a very valid point. Several students ask the question “Why do we need to study Mathematics?” There is not a GOLDEN answer simply because there are so many career paths, but as Mr. Schlicter puts it, if you dig deep enough into anything, you may strike gold in the area of mathematics.

Here are a few reasons why you need mathematics:

• Mathematics enhances your logic reasoning, which is essential in studies.

• Mathematics helps you become mature, as it furthers your decision making skills. Mathematics makes you a consummate decision maker since it has taught and trained you to think deeper and come up with sound and concrete solutions.

• Mathematics can be applied in real life, to gain profit, and prevent losses.

• Mastering Mathematics will aid you in bolstering your chances for passing examinations for higher degrees, certifications, etc.

• Mathematics provides you satisfaction and joy. The feeling you will have in getting the correct answers (especially the difficult ones will give you delight in your heart, which is priceless).

Don’t allow the perceived difficulties of mathematics keep you from achieving the goals that you have set for yourself. Understand that every career needs mathematics, even if it is just to count the money made or loss. Allow yourself to develop a strong mathematics foundation and take it everywhere life may lead you — maybe even to a pot of GOLD.
