The OCIS - Project
Project goalsAssist the standardization process to reachone world-wide standard IEC 61850Assist the harmonization process betweenIEC 61850 and UCA.2Test and compare original IEC 61850 andUCA.2 drafts with respect to feasibility, applicability and efficiencyTest the independence of IEC 61850 fromthe communication stack (Verify the basiccommunication architecture)
Project durationThe project started in 1998 and terminatedwith a conference in 2000

Summary of results
The communication concepts as defined in IEC 61850drafts fulfill the requirements of substationcommunicationThe object model of UCA needs extensions to beapplicable by the European marketEthernet is suitable as station busIEC 61850 based applications are independent from thecommunication stack and therefore future proofIEC 61850 provides interoperability between devicesfrom multiple vendors

Summary and outlook
The concepts of IEC 61850 have been verifiedThe point - to - point link connecting non conventionalinstrumental transformers according to IEC 61850-9-1 isready to be used and will be supported in future byABB and SIEMENSCommunication links supporting IEC 61850-9-1 may beconnected with an Ethernet switch implementing a firststep of a process bus solution.
The verification of the real time behavior of a processbus approach will be the focus of future prototypingactivities
